A gift that comes from the heart
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDIn 2019, Hambright Elementary School teacher Lorien Gilbert learned a fellow staff member at the school was in need of a kidney transplant. Gilbert immediately sought an evaluation at a hospital to determine if she was a compatible donor, but she was denied.
Although the staff member was able to receive a transplant from a deceased donor, Gilbert still felt she was meant to become a donor, and she continued to research the process.
Three years later, the father of one of Gilbert’s third-grade students needed a kidney transplant.
Gilbert once again underwent testing at a hospital in Philadelphia, a process that took nearly seven months to complete. By the time Gilbert was approved, her student’s father had found another compatible donor, but Gilbert still knew there was
someone out there whom she could help.
“If I can help with something, I’m going to,” Gilbert said. “I’ve been an organ donor all my life, but I never realized how important living donations are.” In addition to researching organ donation, Gilbert is a regular blood and plasma donor. Gilbert’s blood type is O+, making her a compatible donor for many other blood types. After her second attempt at becoming a kidney donor, Gilbert began looking into the requirements for an altruistic donation, which would allow her to pledge a kidney to the next patient in need of a transplant.
In July 2023, one of Gilbert’s students told her about a woman named Sarah Weiss in Williamsport. Weiss, a member of the student’s prayer group, lost her right kidney to cancer in 2010, and her second kidney was quickly failing. Gilbert contacted Weiss via email to ask for permission to begin

LEMA unveils alternative weather alert system
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe primary goal of the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) is to prepare local residents for emergencies, from severe weather conditions to man-made disasters. The organization seeks to accomplish this by identifying potential hazards, providing training resources, developing emergency action plans and working with other emergency management agencies at the
federal and state levels.
LEMA uses a notification system called LANC-Alert to send real-time updates to Lancaster County residents during emergencies. The alert system uses phone calls, text messaging and emails to keep people informed, and many other emergency management agencies utilize similar procedures. Unlike many other agencies, however, LEMA faces the added component of serving Amish and Mennonite communities
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD“Midwest goodbye” is a term used to describe a prolonged exit. More often than not, it refers to the way a dinner guest announces his or her departure but lingers in the doorway to chat for another hour. For Millersville University student Oscar McDonah, this was the perfect phrase to describe the multimedia artist’s senior exhibition, which opened on Feb. 19.

To better serve Lancaster County’s unique communities, LEMA is in the process of creating a severe weather alert system for those who do not have access to LANCAlert notifications. The idea was proposed by the National Weather Service, which receives thousands of calls every year from members of Plain communities who are concerned about severe forecasts and the threat that they pose to crops.
The new system, which LEMA hopes to implement in the spring, will allow residents to opt in for emergency landline notifications by submitting a physical form.
LEMA took the idea to the Amish Safety Committee to assess which
types of alerts Plain community members are most interested in, such as warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding.
Although LEMA is still developing a distribution plan, the organization will hand out opt-in forms at mud sales, farm and family safety days and other local events.
“This is part of a whole community approach. We’re trying to think of all the different groups in the area and how to best prepare them for emergencies,” said Brooke Bowman, community resilience coordinator and volunteer liaison at LEMA. “The National Weather Service brought this idea to us as a guinea pig project because of how large the Plain community is here.”
Until 2021, LEMA worked with
the South Central Task Force to send mass calls and text alerts via a reverse 911 system. After the system became inactive, LEMA used funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to create LANC-Alert, which it implemented in December 2023.
“We’ve been rolling out the English community side of it more seamlessly. Lancaster County residents can sign up from their devices and choose which alerts they want to receive,” said LEMA hazardous materials administrator Zachary Gibbons. “People can opt in for anything from agricultural weather notifications to seasonal alerts.”

interaction where someone is trying to leave but they never really get to that point, and they have something else to say,” McDonah said. “I wanted to have the show be a grand thing, and I knew it would be fulfilling for myself. But I realized how early in the semester it would be, meaning I’d still be here for three months afterwards.”
McDonah was born in Toledo, Ohio, becoming familiar with Midwesterners’ signature farewell after spending time with family members in Wisconsin.
“Midwest Goodbyes // Other Forms of Dry Humor” is an exhibition that breaks rules and intends to flip viewers’ expectations upside down. The title, in addition to serving as a callback to the artist’s origins in the Midwest, refers to the specific form of comedy McDonah likes to incorporate into artwork. The showcase primarily features large sculptural installations that McDonah uses to challenge the barrier between the viewer and the piece. McDonah designed the exhibition to be an ode to absurdity, and many of the pieces depict an imagined space that undermines the audience’s expectations with exaggerated motifs and clashing themes. One sculpture resembles a kitchen, but McDonah challenges its context by painting the entire room hot pink. Other pieces in the showcase portray domestic settings with industrial materials, which McDonah arranged in the gallery to create an environment that feels interactive.
“To me, it’s about self-imposed rules. There’s something really obsessive but also really funny to me about that,” McDonah said. “I like doing things that are slightly bizarre and inherently silly, whether that’s

incorporating very saturated colors or associating my pieces with circuses, which are in themselves funny.”
In addition to unconventional placement and opposing subjects, McDonah incorporated live music and a lighting display during the opening night of “Midwest Goodbyes.” The evening featured a performance from Baltimore-based composer Alex Silva, who played a set on a carousel-esque stage while McDonah operated a lighting display. Over the last few years, McDonah has worked as a lighting and sound engineer for shows at local music venues and in the basement of McDonah’s Millersville residence. In 2023, McDonah hosted Philadelphia artist They Are Gutting A Body of Water and designed a visual display to accompany the performance. “Whether it’s appropriate for the space or not, music and art go hand-in-hand,” said McDonah. “I felt it was important to include because that’s a creative process that’s important to me.”

the donation process, and four months later, the two women underwent a successful kidney transplant.
In the weeks following the surgery, Gilbert received a gift basket and cards from her students to wish her a speedy recovery. The kids also gifted Gilbert a book they had made themselves titled “Where Is Ms. Gilbert’s Kidney?” On Jan. 10, after Gilbert returned to the classroom, the third-graders had an opportunity to learn about the procedure during a video call with Weiss. “They had a lot of questions. The first one was ‘Don’t you need your kidney?” Gilbert said.
Weiss’ parents thanked Gilbert for her donation by sending her flowers on Valentine’s Day, which coincides with National Organ Donation Day. “(Weiss’) mom said I saved her daughter’s life, which means I’m her daughter now,” Gilbert said.
According to www.mayo clinic.org, transplants that are completed with a living donor instead of a deceased donor have a much higher success rate. Gilbert said she encourages anyone who is interested in becoming a donor to visit www.kidney .org or ask a primary care provider to learn more.
