The word “aevidum” was coined by students at Cocalico High School after the death of a classmate in 2003. The term, derived from the Latin root word for life, is used by students as a reassuring phrase to let others know someone has their back. “Aevidum” is one of many efforts made by students and teachers at Cocalico High School to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

Since its inception in 2003, Aevidum has taken shape as a nonprofit organization and extracurricular club present in more than 300 schools in Pennsylvania, and it continues to expand across the country.

Members of Penn Manor School District’s Aevidum club meet three to four times every month to share ideas and discuss ways to make students in the community feel appreciated and accepted.

This year, the theme is “Amplify Aevidum,” and it seeks to help students strengthen their voices and talents to demonstrate to others that someone is looking out for them. “We want to make sure everyone knows that it’s OK to not be OK,” said Danielle Croft, a teacher at Marticville Middle School and an adviser for Aevidum. Several Marticville Middle School students serve on Aevidum’s youth advisory board, which comprises members from across the state.

Aevidum members are heavily involved with many local community events to spread the organization’s message. In October 2023, 25 students and Maria Vita, Penn Manor High School’s Aevidum club adviser, joined Croft in walking in the annual homecoming parade at Millersville University. Aevidum also organizes an annual conference to engage its members, provide suicide prevention training and encourage students to propel the movement in their schools and

local communities. The Amplify Aevidum Conference was held in November 2023 in Bethlehem, and it featured student advisory board members Cole Hoyt and Alivia Green from Marticville Middle School as keynote speakers.

“The number of students I notice struggling with anxiety

and depression has increased every year at astronomical rate,” Croft said. “It’s important that the youth are educated on it to take the shame away from mental illness. Oftentimes, it’s the invisible illness - but that doesn’t make it any less important.”

In addition to attending local events, student members of

Aevidum organize their own activities to raise funds and to engage the Penn Manor community. The group is currently planning its annual 5K event in May, although a location has not been determined yet.

Yes, baby cuddling is a real thing, and it’s as heartwarming as it sounds. A resident of Manheim Township and a retired private adoption agency director, Keller performs her fascinating volunteer work in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

of Women & Babies Hospital, 690 Good Drive, Lancaster. “Most of them are little wee ones,” said Keller of the babies she snuggles. “The littlest people you’ve ever seen, and they need help to grow. It’s very comforting to see them grow every week. It’s very satisfying seeing the flower open up.”

County, infants as young as 22 weeks old and usually facing some type of health challenge.

Typically, the babies’ stays in the NICU range from seven days to four months.

“Some are premature and can’t fight off infections,” said Margi Bowers, nurse manager of Women & Babies’ NICU. “There is research that shows infants who receive human touch have more positive outcomes, like gaining weight faster. Evidence shows that human touch increases the likelihood of trusting relationships later in life.”

“It gives them a place in the world by looking into another person’s face,” said Keller. “Human interaction is so important to development. Human interaction helps them to eat better and sleep better. If we can be there when mom and dad can’t, that’s great.”

“Sometimes mom is really sick,” said Bowers. “Giving birth isn’t easy. Some moms have other children at home or have to go back to work. Sometimes it’s teenage moms who have to go back to school. Moms and dads just aren’t here all the time.”

The NICU’s baby cuddling program has a waiting list that the hospital reviews once a year. Before they are accepted into the program, baby cuddlers undergo

a thorough background check and training. They work in three-hour shifts, and a baby cuddler is on duty at the NICU 24/7.

“We rock a lot of times,” said Keller. “We also do the classic rock back and forth while standing. The nurses swaddle the babies in blankets and cloth tightly, so they feel secure. They know someone is there. I hum songs to them, they lay on my chest, I’ll slightly rub their foreheads or forearms. Sometimes they just need some warmth and to be hugged. Sometimes you get a smile, and it’s priceless.”

Keller has been a baby cuddler for 10 years. Over that time, she has learned to manage the emotional attachments that develop between herself and the infants.

“Wednesdays are the best part of my week,” said Keller of her 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift. “I end up coming out of there happy every time. I almost have a renewed outlook on life. Just feeling them and looking into their faces, that’s my reward.”

“You become temporarily emotionally attached,” Keller added. “The day of discharge is a happy day. Sometimes I’ll walk down with them. I just wish them well. I care about each one from my heart. In my heart I tell them that they’ve got to fight to get through it.”

Designer bag bingo fundraiser set

The Columbia Dream Center will hold its second annual designer bag bingo on Saturday, March 23, at the Knights of Columbus, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and bingo will start at 1 p.m.

our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.

As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.

“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”

In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.

Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.

“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”

Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.

Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.

Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.

“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”

“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”

Asked about the secret to EPC’s

longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
