Getting back in the game for a good cause
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAt any age, amputees and individuals born with limb loss or limb difference face many challenges. But children in America often face additional obstacles when seeking prosthetics and therapy due to a decreased likelihood that their family’s insurance will cover the cost. Nonprofit organization Iron Leg Corp. seeks to provide support for children in Lancaster County who are in need of assistance with obtaining prosthetics.
entail full-contact football games for individuals above the age of 34 and amputees who are 18 or older. Registration is available online for residents in any part of Lancaster County, and the football teams will be helmed by both former and current coaches from several local school districts, including Donegal, Hempfield, Solanco and Penn Manor.
“A basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
Iron Leg is one of the few organizations of its kind, and it will hold an equally unique fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. The event will begin at 7 p.m., and it will
Practices for the game will begin at the end of May; exact dates and additional information will be announced by Iron Leg once they are available. The registration fee will include equipment such as a uniform, a helmet and shoulder pads. Players are required to bring a seven-pad girdle and turf cleats. To register online, visit https:// ironleg.org/interest-form.
The primary goal of the fundraiser is to acquire the resources
that allow Iron Leg to provide financial support and to purchase prosthetics for children with limb loss or limb difference. Due to how quickly children outgrow prosthetics, insurance often will not cover the cost; if it does, it typically only allows the child to obtain a basic prosthetic that is
unsuited for physical activities such as playing sports or hiking.
“Most of the time, insurance companies won’t pay for a $30,000 leg if the kid is going to grow out of it in within two years,” said Iron Leg co-founder Matt Millhouse. “But the thing is, that means the kids miss out on being more active. A
basic leg will allow them to walk, but to us that’s not good enough. A kid can run track and field with a good leg.”
In addition to raising funds for children in the community, the goal of Iron Leg’s fundraiser is to give football players an opportunity to play one more game under

NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise money and awareness in the
fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of the blossoming sport.
“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director.
“There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”

Program to highlight birding
The Ladies Night Out group from Millersville Community Church will host local birding enthusiast Nina Wolfe at its meeting on Friday, May 10. The event will be held at the Millersville Community Church’s Hope Campus at 242 Bender Road from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wolfe will highlight some of the backyard birding experiences she has shared with her husband, Warren, in Lancaster County and beyond.

She is also a member of the Lancaster County Garden Club, the Muhlenberg Botanical Society, the Pennsylvania Society for Ornithology, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. She and Warren lead bird watching walks for the Lancaster County Bird Club, and most of these outings free and open to the public.
All women in the community are welcome to attend. The meeting is free, but a freewill offering will be received.

The Friends of Fishing Creek will host a drivethrough event for all Jeep and off-road vehicle owners on Saturday, May 18, in the Fishing Creek Nature Preserve from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will start at Drumore Township Park, 1675 Furniss Road, Drumore, and end at Susquehannock State Park, 1880 Park Drive, Drumore. A free lunch will be provided by a local food truck vendor at the state park.
The Friends of Fishing Creek will host the drivethrough with the help of partner entities such as Lancaster Conservancy, Donegal Trout Unlimited, Water Quality Volunteer Coalition, and Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Organization. Six stations will be set up during the 3.8-mile ride. At each station, an expert will provide information on aspects of the Fishing Creek watershed.
This event is family-friendly and free of charge. It is funded in part by an $8,000 grant received in 2023 from the Lancaster Clean Water Partners.
Providence Autos, a local Jeep dealership, has also granted $500 as a partner and sponsor of the event. Representatives of the dealership will be on-site during the event with the newest Jeep models.
Grant funds allowed the Friends of Fishing Creek to create an event aimed at helping Jeep and other off-road vehicle owners to enjoy and also protect the fragile and sensitive ecosystem of the Fishing Creek watershed. Located in the southern portion of Lancaster County, the watershed hosts freshwater trout, cranes, birds
and many other species of habitat animals. Many native plants, amphibians and vernal pools are located within the preserve.
For more information and to register by Friday, May 10, search for “Jeep Day: Education and engagement with your Friends of Fishing Creek” at www .eventbrite.com. This event is open to 60 Jeeps and offroad vehicles.
Friends of Fishing Creek is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to monitoring, preserving, enhancing, and promoting the Fishing Creek Watershed through education, community involvement, and watershed improvement projects. Since its founding in 2006, the organization has worked to protect the watershed health in Drumore and engage a diverse group of community members in its projects.
The Grow With Us spring luncheon arrives at the end of LCP’s revitalization process, which has entailed a rebranding of the organization’s logo as well as an effort to revisit its core values. Last summer, United Way of Lancaster County awarded LCP a grant via its Level Up & Launch Initiative, a program that supports multiple local nonprofits every year. LCP used the grant to increase its capacity to serve the community by launching new programs and increasing the range of its various services; the nonprofit currently serves more than 300 households on a weekly basis. The upcoming roster of new projects include the 717 Food Recovery Program, which helps LCP acquire fresh food from local retailers that would otherwise be thrown away.
“We’ve been undergoing the process of revisiting our mission to figure out who we are as an organization,” said Jenna Graeff, executive director of LCP. “We landed back on our community partnership model, and we’re really trying to grow our partnerships as our main
One of LCP’s recently established partnerships is a collaborative project with the Millersville Senior Center to install a garden at its facility. The fresh addition gives local senior citizens an opportunity to spend time outside and get physical exercise as they tend the garden and learn how to grow their own food.
LCP’s new initiatives also include a partnership with the clothing bank, located at 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood. The organization is currently seeking donations of spring and summer children’s clothing. Clean and gently used clothes may be dropped off in the brown container outside of Martic Clothing Bank at any time.
“The theme of ‘Grow With Us’ signifies our growth as an organization. We hope to be around for the community for a very long time,” Graeff said. “We have a strong foundation of volunteers and programs, but we could always use more help.”

expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
LCHS plans concert
The Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fine and performing arts department will present “A Fresh Field of Music,” part of its LCHS Community Outreach Concert and Lecture Series, on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster.
The concert will feature pianist Frances Veri, violinist Michael Jamanis, and cellist Susan Moyer Bergeron, who is a Lancaster native. They will premiere Richard Field’s Piano Trio No. 1, which blends elements of classical, jazz, and popular music. They will also present works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Dvorak, and Piazzolla.
Jamanis is the son of Veri, and he, Bergeron, and Field have known each other since childhood. Field now resides in Budapest, Hungary.
Jamanis and Veri have been artists in residence at the LCHS performing arts series since 2012. They have a history of involvement in the music community of Lancaster and around the
world as touring artists. Jamanis directs Music For Everyone’s education program and is a senior adjunct professor at Franklin & Marshall College.
Like Jamanis, Bergeron comes from a musical family. Her father, Karl Moyer, taught organ lessons and music courses at Millersville University for 30 years. He was also a music critic for a local newspaper. Bergeron’s late mother, Carolyn, was a well-known string teacher
and a member of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for many years, and a string lesson program was established in her memory through Music For Everyone in 2023. Sister Cynthia is a music professor. Bergeron began her musical journey at age 4, and she won numerous awards as a child. A summer spent at the Kinhaven music camp in Weston, Va., inspired her to become a professional cellist. Lions Club helps fire department purchase equipment
The Lancaster Lions Club recently donated $20,000 to the Lancaster City Fire Department to purchase two new thermal imaging cameras (TICs). Fire Chief Todd Hutchinson demonstrated the new camera at a recent Lions Club meeting. In addition to the two original cameras that were ordered, Hutchinson was able to purchase 10 additional smaller cameras. The larger cameras are used by the unit officers, and the smaller cameras are used by firefighters. The TICs work by rendering infrared radiation as visible light. Since the TICs can see through darkness or smoke, they allow firefighters to quickly find the seat of a structure fire or see the heat signature of visually obscured victims. The cameras can be used to search for victims outdoors on a cool night, spot smoldering fires inside a wall, or detect overheating electrical wiring.
Presentation to focus on MCC
The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a slideshow presentation on the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and World War II when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. The gathering will take place in the Millersville Borough administration and police building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.
The presenter will be Kenneth Sensenig, who worked with MCC for 35 years both domestically and internationally. His talk is titled “From Lancaster County to the World: Mennonite Central Committee and World War II.” It will focus on the challenges World War II presented to the largely rural Mennonite populations in Lancaster County and across the country, the quick response by MCC volunteers in Europe that enabled them to unveil the depravations and devastation of the war, and how the war forced MCC to mature. Twenty years old at the outset of the war, the Akron-based organization created a bridge between the U.S. and Europe to distribute care packages,
clothing, and canned meat.
A question-and-answer session will close the meeting.
Sensenig, who is newly retired, served MCC as a volunteer teacher in Africa for six years and as a public relations specialist for several decades. During that time, he also had the opportunity to visit many countries, including North Korea, Sudan, and Iraq. An Ephrata resident, he earned degrees in education from Penn State University, Millersville University, and Temple University. Although admission is free, donations will be accepted.
