Blue Rock Heritage Center (BRHC), 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, will hold an open house on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. The annual event will highlight various items in its collection, including new additions and temporary displays. The open house will also feature demonstrations and educational activities offered by local nonprofit organizations and historical groups.
“We always try to showcase the local Native American history that was such a rich part of this area.”
One of BRHC’s most recent additions is an assortment of Native American artifacts that belonged to the late Eugene Shultz, a resident of Washington Boro and avid collector. The collection includes stone tools, arrowheads, brass items and glass beads that Eugene found in local fields and gardens between the 1930s and 1960s. Many of the items date to as early as the 17th century, and they were brought
to BRHC by Eugene’s son, David. Attendees of the open house will have an opportunity to view a sneak boat that was donated last fall by Alan Dinkel of Columbia. The boat was made in the 1940s
for duck hunting on the open waters of the Susquehanna, which has a large duck and goose population due to its shallow waters and rocky islands. The sneak boat was designed to be camouflaged and rowed with oars to avoid scaring waterfowl with a motor, including an oar on the rear that allows hunters to approach their prey undetected. BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn the first two Saturdays in April, roughly 100 members of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Penn Manor High School (PMHS) participated in the second annual Day of Caring. Groups of student volunteers set out to pick up litter and clean community spaces such as local parks, working with various township officials and schools throughout the Penn Manor area.
On April 6, about 50 students collected garbage, tree branches and fallen leaves as they weeded the sidewalks surrounding the PMHS track and field. The volunteers also organized storage spaces for athletic equipment near the school gym. Other students removed litter from the Little Conestoga Creek, the Enola Rail Trail and various parks in Manor Township. Another group of volunteers visited Central Manor Elementary School to weed its garden and prepare the garden beds for planting. According to Manor Township’s public works director, Mark Harris, PMHS students collected more than 1,300 pounds of trash throughout the day, including 13 tires.
On April 13, a second team
on display during the open house, including a coverlet that was made with a loom by Jacob Witmer in 1838. Rae Newhouse, who purchased one of the items during an auction near Quarryville, will give a presentation on how coverlets were made and their role in the Colonial era. Other demonstrations will include arts and crafts offered by Native American advocacy group Circle Legacy Center, as well as an active three sisters garden. This type of garden, which was commonly found in Native American villages, contains maize, squash and beans planted side by side.
“The open house is an

annual way for us to highlight new additions to the collection or just some local history in the area,” said Charlie Douts, president and charter member of Blue Rock Heritage Center.
“We always try to showcase the local Native American history that was such a rich part of this area.”
This year, members of the Lower Susquehanna Archaeological Society will attend the open house to identify fossils and artifacts residents of the area have discovered in nearby fields. Attendees are invited to bring locally found historical artifacts they wish to have identified. BRHC hosted the archaeological group on May 19 for a guest speaker event that included a talk from geologist Jeri Jones on various types of rocks found in York and Lancaster counties.

unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Lancaster Group might be involved. The grants were in the past financed primarily with funds generated by the group’s Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and more recently were funded with money donated to the Group by its participation in the ExtraGive. of roughly 50 students placed wood chips on the rail trail in Martic Township, in addition to sanding and repainting the trail’s wooden benches. Students also reconstructed rock borders and painted over graffiti. Other groups of NHS volunteers cleaned up parking lots at PMHS, labeled plant signs in Central Elementary School’s gardens and helped move furniture for the nonprofit Off The Streets, an organization based in Lancaster city that helps individuals who are experiencing homelessness find permanent housing.
The first Day of Caring at PMHS was organized last spring by NHS adviser Catherine Tejada, who said the event was modeled after United Way’s annual Day of Caring. Previously, PMHS seniors and members of NHS participated in the United Way event, but the school wanted to introduce its own version to hold in the spring, as the original
Day of Caring takes place every fall. “It’s been a really nice way for our students to work in the community. Seniors and juniors have really loved participating,” added Tejada.
Although this is Tejada’s final year as an NHS adviser at PMHS, she said the club hopes to continue the annual tradition of cleaning up the community.
“(The Day of Caring) gives students an opportunity to get together with their friends while also feeling like they’re making a difference,” said Tejada. “It was quite an undertaking planning-wise, but the second year went really well.”

The National Watch & Clock Museum has extended its special exhibit “S-Town Exquisite Clocks” to run three more months due to continued public interest. Home to a large collection of clocks, watches, and horological artifacts, the National Watch & Clock Museum is exhibiting examples that showcase the talent of John B. McLemore, the focus of the acclaimed podcast “S-Town” from the makers of “Serial” and “This American Life.” The exhibit will be on display through Wednesday, July 31.
More than just the inspiration for the “S-Town” podcast - which attracted millions of listeners when it broadcast in 2017McLemore was a highly accomplished clockmaker who restored fine clocks. He was particular about the way that he worked and carefully replicated histori-
cal methods to ensure the accuracy of his work.
His commitment to that accuracy may well have cost McLemore his life, as he used fire-gilding to apply gold to his clocks. The old method produces good results, but it relies on melting mercury with gold and produces extremely toxic mercury vapors.
The National Watch & Clock Museum houses approximately 13,000 timepieces. The museum is run by the nonprofit National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors Inc., whose nearly 10,000 members come from the U.S. and other countries around the world.
The museum is located at 514 Poplar St., Columbia, and is open to the public on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.museum.nawcc.org or call 717-684-8261.

safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.
If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected place, such as into a field, and may
be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.
