Acorn Acres announces expansion campaign
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAcorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation, located in Millersville, is about to make history. In May, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director, Betsy Shank, announced a new campaign to secure funding for a major expansion. In addition to enhancing Acorn Acres’ level of care and capacity for animals, the project will make the organization Lancaster County’s first commercial wildlife facility.
Acorn Acres’ expansion will include an additional facility that will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools such as fluoroscopy and X-ray machines, as well as an on-site laboratory. The new facility, which is approximately 2,000 square feet, was formerly used as a veterinary office building, and it will allow Acorn Acres to bring in more volunteers, more animals and members of the public who wish to take a look at the many ways it serves the community.
Shank said she initially spoke with Ryan and Ashley Tuma, the owners of the new facility, roughly one year ago about using the space for Acorn Acres. After discussing the potential expansion while Shank was teaching in North Carolina, Ashley suggested the two women meet in person on Feb. 28, unaware that it was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Acorn Acres’ late mascot, Poppy the groundhog. “I said, ‘I hear you, Poppy. I’ll go,” added Shank. Once the details were squared away, Shank officially partnered with Ryan and Ashley to rent the new space and launch the Capacity Campaign.
“I’ve had to turn away animals from Acorn Acres every year because we literally run out of room,” Shank said. “This new facility will allow us to take a higher number of animals, welcome additional volunteers and bring in additional species.” Currently, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and woodchucks; the expansion
will enable the organization to extend its care to bats and Pennsylvania’s only native marsupial, the Virginia opossum.
Once the new facility is officially up and running, Shank plans to offer tours to members of the public. Due to regulations, wildlife centers are not able to
exhibit animals in rehabilitation to prevent them from growing accustomed to human contact.
The examination rooms in the new building are equipped with one-sided windows, which will allow guests to see the animals while avoiding direct contact.
Acorn Acres’ primary goal is
now to secure funding for the move into the facility and its continued operation. To make a donation online, visit https:// tinyurl.com/AcornAcresExpan sion. For more information or to view other donations options, visit www.acornacreswr.com/ capacity_campaign.

hamburger or a hot dog. Each meal will come with sides such as chips and a beverage. Food will also be available to purchase from several food trucks, including Bricker’s Famous French Fries, Kona Ice, Little Cotton Cart, Cowboy’s Chicken BBQ and Mocha Motion Coffee.
Entertainment will comprise live music, a dance performance and an interactive Bible lesson with horses. Additional activities will take place throughout the day, such as pony rides and a dunk tank, where participants may take a shot at hitting a target to drop Live With Purpose’s pastors into the water tank.
Prize drawings will include tickets to The Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate’s Fourth of July celebration, passes to Longwood Gardens and other items donated by local businesses. Toys and small prizes will be offered at no cost to children who attend Conestoga Fun Day, and Live With Purpose Church will give away 60 bicycles during the event. Various local nonprofits will be present to offer information and answer attendees’ questions. In the past, organizations such as Safe Families for Children, the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company and Good News Club have attended Conestoga Fun Day.
“It’s a way for us to engage the
community and families outside the congregation,” said Shayla Henry, coordinator of the event and Live With Purpose Church’s children’s ministry director. “It’s all hands on deck for everyone at our church to come volunteer and to bless those who live in our community.” The church asks that participants register online prior to the event. To register, visit https://tinyurl .com/conestogaday24.
Live With Purpose Church is affiliated with a network of churches connected via In The Light Ministries. The church has hosted Conestoga Fun Day every year since it opened its doors eight years ago. Serving as a plant from the larger ministry, Live With Purpose seeks to engage residents of Conestoga and its surrounding community through a variety of programs and services. The church’s programs include a children’s ministry, a youth program held during Sunday church services and classes for different age groups. Additionally, Live With Purpose Church introduced its first vacation Bible school last summer.
“Our ministry is big on building up and raising future leaders to send them out into the world,” Henry said. “We have many discipleship programs and a variety of people doing different things in different areas.”

first ride was held during the weekend of what would have been Daulton’s 23rd birthday, and the event grew to become an annual tradition in the Southern End.
The fourth annual Daulton Trout Memorial Ride for Suicide Awareness and Prevention will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. The ride will begin at the Hoffman Building in Memorial Park, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, and registration will be available from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., with kickstands up at 10:30 a.m. Attendees who do not wish to ride are invited to a silent auction and lunch in the Hoffman Building after the ride concludes at 12:30 p.m.
Initially, the participants in the ride followed a course that
followed Route 272 from Buck to Willow Street before concluding at the Solanco Fairgrounds. While the ride was scenic, Bill and Julia wanted to make it more visible to the community; in 2023, they expanded the route to incorporate other parts of the Southern End, including Lampeter, Strasburg, Georgetown, downtown Quarryville and New Providence.
For the first two years, Bill and Julia used the proceeds of the memorial ride to endow the Daulton Trout Scholarship fund at Solanco High School. After sustaining the scholarship, the Trout family decided to use the money raised by the ride to support local organizations such as Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga and
Mental Health America of Lancaster County. This year, the proceeds will also benefit Commonwealth Emergency Crisis Response.
Bill and Julia said this is the last year they plan to have the ride due to the effort required to organize it and the painful memories it brings up. Since 2021, the couple has raised
more than $45,000 for local nonprofits through the annual ride.
“If you cross paths with us or see us riding, please take a moment to think of the families who have suffered the tragedy of suicide,” Julia said. “It might take five minutes to wait for us to pass, but you can use that time to be grateful for your family.”
