Ready to run, walk or march into the future
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn May 29, Penn Manor High School held a commencement ceremony to give diplomas to more than 400 graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. The event took place at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster city, and the ceremony was kicked off with an opening address from principal Doug Eby.
Eby invited the audience to stand and cheer for the graduating students before highlighting the many accomplishments of the Class of 2024. Ninety-nine graduates achieved a grade point average of 4.0 or higher during their academic careers, and more than 50 students earned college credits or
completed their first year of trade school as they finished high school. Ethan Benne was named Student of the Year by Penn Manor faculty members, and Nicole Faultz was recognized for having a perfect attendance during her senior year.
“Penn Manor has provided the foundation that you can continue to build upon for the rest of your lives.”
“Members of the audience, you are seated here as family, friends, and parents who have supported the graduates from birth through many of life’s notable moments to reach this stage as graduates of Penn Manor,” Eby told the crowd. “These graduates would not be here today without your unwavering support, love and guidance.”
The ceremony included remarks from students Grace Gerner, Grace Hripto and salutatorian Suren Clark. “Graduates, one of the best
Fire company will celebrate 100 years of serving the Southern End
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThere are few things that remain unchanged after the passing of a century. The 20th century in particular brought about radical advancement in technology and societies around the globe. Although the Willow Street Fire Company is one of many fire departments that have evolved to better serve modern society, its core mission
has stayed the same - even after 100 years.
The Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 N. Willow Street Pike, will commemorate 100 years of service with an open house and community celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. The rain-or-shine event will include live music, local vendors and demonstrations from several emergency service organizations from Willow Street

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDUnited Disabilities Services (UDS), 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. The event will offer members of the public an opportunity to learn about the organization’s service dog program and the many ways it benefits local schools and individ uals throughout the community.
“We’re trying to reach out to as many people as we can. Not only to talk about the program and offer a look behind the scenes,
but also to make some new friends,” said UDS service dogs manager Lori Breece. “Not everyone can afford a sponsorship, but we could use (donations of) dog food.”
During the open house, UDS will share information on sponsorships and other ways people can support the service dog program. The event will include various demonstrations from dogs and clients, and staff members and volunteers will be present to answer guests’ questions.
to bring dogs to schools in the heart of the county. “We’re discovering that these districts now want a dog in every building,” added Breece. “It’s a domino effect; from the moment kids are greeted by a dog when they get off the bus, their anxiety levels have been reduced. It’s a beautiful waterfall effect that goes through the whole school, and we couldn’t be more proud of it.”
and its neighboring communities.
Since 2017, UDS has expanded its service area to assist clients within five hours of Lancaster County, including individuals from Delaware, New York City, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. “If someone is within five hours of us, we can help them - no matter what state they live in,” Breece said.
In addition to extending its coverage area beyond Lancaster, UDS has continued to partner with schools throughout the county to place support dogs in every school district from Warwick to Solanco. Breece said the organization recently began talks with the School District of Lancaster

things about Penn Manor is its ability to prepare you for life after high school,” said Clark, who served as class president during his senior year. “Whether you are entering the workforce, the trades, seeking higher education, or anything in between, Penn Manor has provided the foundation that you can continue to build upon for the rest of your lives.”
Valedictorian Cole Troop delivered a speech in which he highlighted the bittersweet excitement of saying goodbye to Penn Manor shared by members of the Class of 2024, reminding his classmates to face whatever the future may hold. “The past is a scary thing,” Troop said. “We all have embarrassing
The primary goal of UDS’ open house is to bring in supporters to help with the long-term financial sustainability of the service dog program. When training service dogs, UDS invests $25,000 to $30,000 per pup over the course of a 22-month process. Clients who receive dogs are only charged $5,000 of the total cost. “We’re always in the red, but it’s important to be good financial stewards as we try to help the community,” said Breece. “I’d love to see a dog in every school, and I believe we’re on our way. It’s the power of a wet nose and a wagging tail.”

moments that tend to haunt us in a funny, cruel way at random times during the day. Whether it was missing a wide-open shot, forgetting your line, or getting recorded falling in your driveway at 6:30 in the morning and then begging someone not to post it on the internet. But our past at Penn Manor is just the sound of our feet hitting the ground, ready to run, walk, or march into our future.”

Demonstrations will include medical helicopters and an antique fire engine, as well as a medical helicopter fly-by if weather permits. Attendees will have an opportunity to complete a small obstacle course and learn about the safest methods of exiting a smoky building. Refreshments will be available to purchase from a variety of food trucks, such as Tri-County Barbecue, Premium Shaved Ice, G’s Oven Fresh Pizza, Auntie Anne’s and Moo Shakes. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available to purchase during the open house, and prizes will include items from a variety of local businesses.

Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D’Agostino and state Reps. Steven Mentzer and Bryan Cutler will attend the opening ceremony of the event, and a memorial will be set up to honor five members of the Willow Street Fire Company who have died in the line of duty since the department was founded.
“We are a 100% volunteer fire company. Being volunteer-run and lasting 100 years is almost unheard of, but we manage due to community support,” said Jennifer Anastasio, chair of the open house committee.

Although Willow Street Fire Company receives a small portion of its funding from West Lampeter Township, its primary source of funds is acquired via fundraising letters it sends out to the community three times a year. Community donations help to cover expenses such as building upgrades, apparatus maintenance and safety equipment, allowing the fire company to better serve Willow Street and parts of Pequea and Providence townships. The organization has recently made a few significant improvements to its fire station, including a full-service generator that will allow the facility to function in the event of a complete power outage.
