In the ever-changing world of social media and the online landscape, new trends often take the country - and even the whole world - by storm. Nearly every American will groan at the mention of formerly ubiquitous internet trends such as the “cinnamon challenge,” which encouraged thousands of people to try swallowing an entire spoonful of the potent spice without coughing. As always, the general public gradually loses interest in these trends to make room for whatever hot topic will take its place. Most online trends are relatively harmless, but some of them, including the budding fad of rock and cliff diving, pose a serious risk to people who engage in them without taking the necessary precautions. In recent weeks, various social media platforms have seen an increase of content depicting thrill seekers who enjoy plunging from the top of steep cliffs into rivers and other bodies of water. The precarious pastime has been safely practiced by trained professionals and extreme sportsmen for years, but the abrupt and widespread interest among teenagers and young adults has prompted many local school districts to issue a warning to Lancaster County residents interested in trying it out themselves. Due to the county’s proximity to the Susquehanna River, which is easily accessible to areas such as

BIA announces Parade of Homes

The Building Industry Association of Lancaster County (BIA) has announced the annual virtual and in-person Parade of Homes. The event opened on June 15 and will continue on Wednesday, June 19, through Sunday, June 23. Tour hours are weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m.

Sponsored by Fulton Bank and UGI Utilities and presented by BIA, the Lancaster/Lebanon Parade of Homes is a free public event that opens

Pequea, Washington Boro, Holtwood and Columbia, local medical professionals have made an effort to discourage attempts to practice cliff jumping in the area.

Recently, some school administrators sent an email to students and their parents to highlight a few specific concerns, asserting “there is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River.” Due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam in Safe Harbor, the river has an unpredictable variation in depth that poses a threat to any diver, and many submerged objects are not visible from high above the surface.

Additionally, many people believe jumping into water is entirely safe

because of the cushion the water provides. According to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) website, most cliff diving related injuries are associated with the water entry, and divers’ entry position plays a key role in how severely an individual can be injured. During a study conducted in 2013, NLM determined foot and ankle injuries as the most common result of cliff diving, and more than 50% of injured divers entered the water feet first. While you’re brainstorming fun activities to try out this summer, it may be wise to heed medical professionals’ warning and remember that the Susquehanna River isn’t known for its diving-friendly landscapeno matter how exciting the activity may seem online.

This year’s parade features 22 single-family homes, duplexes and remodeling projects from 13 different builders, ranging in price from $499,999 to over $1 million. Participants may visit 19 of the 22 homes in person and/or all the homes virtually utilizing 3D technology, providing a room-by-room view of each home’s innovative designs and details.

The ParadeSmart app is an additional feature that provides home details, directions and customizable routes. After downloading the app from their app store, users should select the BIA Parade of Homes. The Parade of Homes Guidebooks with the same information is available at the BIA office, 204 Butler Ave., Lancaster, and copies of the book were mailed to more than 100,000 Lancaster and Lebanon County households.

The 2024 Parade of Homes showcases more than $17 million in new home construction and remodeling in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, incorporating the latest in design, decorating and trends, including smart home technology. This year’s featured trends include a first-floor owner’s suite, flexible living space, neighborhood amenities, smart features and a 55 and

up community. Each trend is assigned an icon with the home’s listing in the guidebook and website to help people find the features they are looking for.

Other elements in select homes include hidden storage solutions and flex rooms; a secondary, prep kitchen with a sink, dishwasher, microwave and beverage fridge; primary baths with freestanding soaker tubs and tile showers; a two-story family room with double chandeliers and a wall of windows; stone and shiplap fireplaces; coffered and tray ceilings; quartz countertops with oversized islands; wood beam-cased openings at the foyer; matte black appliances; interior and exterior statement lighting; and hardwood staircases with open stringers and high-contrast metal stair railings.

The homes were judged by a panel of building and industry experts, with awards presented at the annual Parade of Homes

Gala on June 14. Homes were classified into divisions by price and judged with other homes in the same price division using a numerical scoring system, with awards for Best of Show, Kitchen, Bath, Interior Design, Exterior and Decorated. The top-scoring single-family and duplex homes each receive the Fulton Bank Award. Winners will be announced on the aforementioned Parade of Homes website.

The 2024 Healing the Planet grant program will accept applications through Monday, July 1, at www.keeppabeautiful.org. The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia. When he was a toddler, he was subjected to Nazi medical experimentation in a Ukrainian labor camp while his parents were put to work, and Steigmann would not have survived if it were not for a German woman. “I Am Meow” is a book about a character with character

One of the keys to good writing is a compelling subject.

Bob Ruder had never written a book before, yet he wrote his first one in 15 minutes. It turns out cats make very good subject material, and besides, Ruder really had little say in it because his subject chose him.

“What (people have) always found interesting is that cats are so aloof,” said Ruder. “They meander to their own beat. They come and go as they choose. If they choose to love you, they will.”

Meow is the name of Ruder’s mature male cat and the subject of his book, “I Am Meow.” The book is nonfiction - because as they say, the truth is stranger than fiction - and it’s not necessarily a children’s book. Instead, it’s suitable for anyone who enjoys a good cat tale.

“It’s the story of a cat who chose to leave its previous home, meander across the countryside and find us as a new family,” said Ruder,

Car

who lives with his wife, Margie, in Manheim Township. “When we first got this cat, he was reluctant to come near us. But he finally came into our home. He was a skinny little guy when we first met him. The book is about this guy’s journey. I wanted to tell why this guy came to us.”

All of this cat drama went down during the summer of 2022. Ruder published “I Am Meow” in December of 2023.

“This cat chose to adopt us,” said Ruder. “Meow is an example of a free spirit. He chose to find a better life for himself. We gave him a new life, but he’s brought joy to our life.”

Illustrated by local artist and former Hempfield High School art teacher Kelly Gallagher, “I Am Meow” is a 20-page, black and white publication that can also serve as a coloring book.

“We called him Meow because he says his name all the time,” said Ruder. “Maybe he thought we didn’t understand it, so he said it over and over until we got it right. The book is

a famous (and furry) fire safety advocate. Members of LCC will operate a booth to offer information on the club, which is open to members of the public who are interested in joining, whether they own a vehicle or not. The club will offer interested attendees more information on its regular meeting times and location.

“We like to look at cars people have fixed up and

about who this cat happens to be.”

“I would say that the book’s primary audience is grandparents, because it could give them an opportunity to sit down with and spend time with their grandchildren reading a book,” he added. “There are few things more important than sharing a book with a child.”

Ruder has already sold more than 80 copies of “I Am Meow” and proceeds from the sale have gone to Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, which pro-

vides low-cost veterinary services. Ruder has ordered a second printing of “I Am Meow.”

“It is an absolute true story. That’s what made it interesting,” said Ruder, who retired from his work as the Manheim Township Middle School principal in 2004. “There are various messages to be seen in the book. People, regardless of their circumstances in life, can find joy if they wish to. It’s all about choices.”

are proud of,” said LCC president Don Teeter. “We’re not into taking points away if there’s a speck of mud on the rim or a tire that doesn’t match; it gives the little guy a chance.”

This year, the car show will be held in memory of former LCC vice president and event organizer Jack Parke, who died in March 2024. In addition to the traditional trophies given to vehicle owners every year, Parke’s partner, Carol Farmer, will select the recipient of the first Jack Parke Memorial Trophy.
