LCP seeks volunteers for summer lunch program
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAlthough the primary goal of every school is to provide pupils with a robust education to prepare them for whichever path they choose to take in life, many school districts acknowledge that success is not only achieved from within a classroom. A proper diet, a healthy dynamic at home and a variety of other factors greatly impact a student’s educational experience. Programs such as Power Packs and the Penn Manor School District (PMSD) free and reduced-cost lunch initiatives aim to prevent students from going to class on an
empty stomach, but many kids still face food insecurity when school lets out for summer break. With the help of a grant from Kellogg’s,
school isn’t in session.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, will host A Gathering of the People: A Native American Happening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. The free community event will include various demonstrations of Native American cultural traditions, activities for children and an educational presentation from genealogist Scott Mellinger at 1 p.m.
Demonstrations will include Native American drumming, dancing and storytelling. Children may participate in an arrowhead hunt, and the youngster who finds the most arrowheads will receive a small prize. Mellinger will offer a
presentation on the Conestoga Massacre in 1763, when a group of unarmed Native Americans was killed by a violent mob of settlers known as the Paxton

Through the Gather & Nourish Summer Lunch Program, LCP seeks to pack and distribute up to 250 boxes of food every week to families in PMSD. LCP was able to launch the initiative after receiving the grant in May. “At first, we thought about doing something that was just connected to the free and reduced-cost lunch program, LCP and Power Packs, but we realized that we could put those three together to find greatest need,” said Jenna Graeff, executive director of LCP.
The new initiative couldn’t arrive at a better time; according to PMSD social worker
BY JEFF FALKExercise is good for the body. Play is good for the soul. On the surface, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for adults with disabilities is all about physical activity. But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun.
“Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these young people don’t get out as
much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.”
Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. The program consists of a 10-game schedule and games are played indoors on

Joy Meley, the number of students assisted by the free and reduced-cost lunch program has significantly increased in recent years. The summer lunch program will also prioritize giving kids food that can be prepared without the use of kitchen appliances. “Many kids don’t necessarily go to LCP because they don’t always have the means to make the food, due to a lack of refrigerator or stove space,” Meley said. “(Gather & Nourish) will provide a somewhat nutritious meal that they are able to prepare while at home.”
LCP and PMSD are seek-
ing volunteers and donors to assist with the launch of the Gather & Nourish Summer Lunch Program. Every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers may assist with packing lunches at Penn Manor High School and transporting them to LCP’s facility on George Street. Members of the public may also donate nonperishable food items listed on LCP’s website, and various other volunteer opportunities are available. Boys. Mellinger will discuss information he discovered while researching the Conestoga Massacre, a theory that several captive members of the Conestoga tribe were protected from the violence by nearby families that adopted them.
This is the first time CAHS has hosted the event, although it held a similar community gathering last year to highlight its collection of Native American artifacts and historical accounts. Many of the items displayed in the museum have been found throughout Washington Boro and its surrounding areas, including a large collection of artifacts discovered in the 1920s.
“Our goal is to educate people in the community about the history of
where we live,” said CAHS member Jim Kauffman.
“We have so much information on the Native Americans who were the first residents of the area.”
CAHS is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., and visitors may learn more about the museum’s collection from docents who offer tours of the building. For more information, visit www.pennmanor history.org.

Abigail Harvey is the perfect example of the adage, “Think globally, act locally.”
The owner of Fount and Fill in Columbia believes one person can make a difference when it comes to environmental impact.
“We are dealing with things I remember hearing about in science class in second grade - the ozone layer, our carbon footprint,” she said. “I was concerned about it then. Now, more than ever, more people are aware of how our behavior affects the environment.”
With that in mind, Harvey started living a low-waste lifestyle in 2019, replacing plastics with glass containers and purchasing reusable items instead of one-time-use products such as paper towels.
“It really started more out of necessity,” she recalled, noting that she was living in a small apartment in Lancaster city at the time and she loathed taking multiple bags of trash down three flights of stairs. “I wanted to have only one bag of trash a week.”
She used glass containers to refill products, taking advantage of a local market that offered bulk items such as laundry detergent and dish soap.
When she and her husband, Jacob, moved to Columbia, she missed the market’s proximity, and she thought about going into business for herself, focused on providing refillable and environmentally friendly products.
kind of thinking of the milkman model,” she said.
She recently launched home refill services, offering customizable options for how often and how much people need.
At her market stand, she partners with women-owned, U.S.-based businesses that share her passion for environmental stewardship. Customers can purchase one of her glass containers or bring their own to fill up on household products such as
all-purpose cleaner or personal-care products such as shampoo. She also sells environmentally friendly items such as dryer balls and pan scrubbers.
A 2012 graduate of Penn Manor High School, Harvey grew up as a self-described “tree hugger.” She still enjoys getting outside as much as possible with her husband and their dogs.
She emphasizes that anyone can adopt the lowwaste lifestyle and fit it to
She participated in in the Idea Incubator program through ASSETS in Lancaster, graduated from the program in 2022, and launched her business with a series of pop-up locations in the county.
She currently has a permanent stand at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., and also works as the executive director of the Lebanon Valley Conservancy.
From the beginning, she also wanted to create a mobile refilling business, bringing access to lowwaste living to more people. “I wanted to be able to do home deliveries, where people set their bottles out and I come and refill them,

fill their unique needs.
“We hear all these negative things, all these scary things about the environment. It’s all doom and gloom,” she said. “It’s important to see that there are things we can do as individuals. It’s not our fault or our responsibility to make up for all the things that got us into this mess, but I do think we can make a difference in our community and our impact on the environment, at least locally.”
From there, she said,

change can have a ripple effect.
“If we can make a difference in our local environment, that can go statewide, and then that can go larger than that,” she explained. “It only takes one person to start doing something new, and then it becomes the new way to do something.”

Boehm’s Chapel Society posts Heritage Sunday
“Crows and Methodist Preachers: A Look at Early Circuit Riders” will be the subject of the Boehm’s Chapel Society’s annual Heritage Sunday service. The event will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, in the chapel at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street.
The Rev. Joe DiPaolo, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, will be the speaker. The event will include a worship service, which will be followed by a hayride to the original farmstead of Martin and Eva Boehm, weather permitting.
The Methodist circuit rider is a figure from early America who had a significant role in the growth of Christianity in the nation. Passionate about their message of salvation, these preachers often followed the wagon tracks to new settlements on the
frontier. They established churches in villages and hamlets across the land and helped shape the culture of the country. DiPaolo’s slideshow presentation will

“It’s like sandlot football,” said Samuels. “We
show up and play. We make sure everyone scores and everyone kicks off. There’s no tackling, no pushing, no shoving. We don’t keep score. We make sure everyone has fun.”
“It’s hard to describe; you’ve got to see it,” Samuels continued. “It’s two hours of action-packed football. There’s a lot of trash talking. These young people can give it good, but it’s all in good fun.”

Last year, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League consisted of two teams, 20 players and eight cheerleaders, affectionately referred to as “The Lancaster Sweethearts.” This year the program is hoping to grow the league to 40 players, enough for four teams.
“A lot of these young people want to play football,” said Samuels. “They can’t play football, so this is our way to get them to play.”

The league is named for Chuckie Magee, a former Aaron’s Acres camper from Lititz who passed away in 2015. The program was started in his honor but only over the last three years has it become associated with Aaron’s Acres.
“We talked to a couple of different organizations, and someone brought up Aaron’s Acres,” said Samuels. “We contacted Risa (Paskoff, executive director) and she loved it.”
Samuels’ 27-year-old son R.J. has Down syndrome.
“I worked with special needs kids a long time ago, but other than that I didn’t have much interaction until my son was born,” said Samuels. “Honestly, if I didn’t have a son with Down syndrome, I wouldn’t be doing anything like this. It’s opened a whole new world for me.”
“When kids with disabilities hit age 21, there’s not a whole lot out there for them to do,” said Samuels. “We know there are young people out there who want to play football. Come join us. We want them to come out. We want to expand. We love what we do.”

He is also the associate pastor at All Saints Church in New Holland. Next year, at FFA, Gilanyi will introduce a new gap year program for students called the Vision and Vocation Institute (VVI). The goal of the program is to connect local businesses to future entrepreneurs while helping young adults navigate their vocational calling.
