Firefighter honored for decades of dedication

In May, the Lancaster County Fireman’s Association (LCFA) chose Paul Thomas of the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for 2024. During the annual LCFA meeting on June 1, Thomas was presented with the award to recognize more than 50 years of service as an active member of the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company and his dedication to making the community a safer place.

“He was certainly a leader who would teach and mentor … everyone in the department.”

“(Thomas) is the kind of guy who will help anyone,” said Larry Frankford, the current fire chief of the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company. “It could be anything, even outside the fire hall. He steps up to the plate, and he’s been that way as long as I’ve known him.” Thomas joined the fire company in 1969. Although he has worn many hats over the course of his career, Thomas has always served as an active firefighter, and he continues to go out on calls today. Thomas served as an ambulance attendant and EMT with the Conestoga Ambulance Association from 1972 to 1978, and he served his first term on the fire company’s board of directors from 1974 to 1994. Thomas is currently serving his second

term as a board member since he was elected in 2008.

Fire company bylaws state that a fire chief cannot simultaneously serve on the board of directors.

Thomas was appointed as the first assistant fire chief in 1978, and he assumed the role of fire chief in 1995 once his term on

the board ended. Thomas stepped down as fire chief in 2007, and he took up his former title of first assistant fire chief from 2008 to 2024.

Frankford said that he credits much of his knowledge of the fire department and his role as fire chief to Thomas’ guidance. “He

For most Americans, July is a time for age-old traditions and festivities. One of the most popular summertime traditions is, of course, the celebration of the Fourth of July, during which every town in the country signifies the birth of the United States with fireworks, cookouts and grand displays of patriotism.

Although Washington Boro is no exception, this time of year includes a tradition that is unique to its community, and it involves a heap of tomatoes.

The annual Tomato Festival will be held on Saturdays, July 13 and 20, at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road. Food will start to be served at 3:30 p.m. on both days, and live music and activities will

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will hold the 2024 Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sunday, Sept. 8, at its facility, located at 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine community event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m., and it will include a variety of family-friendly activities in addition to a new

tradition that will replace the Rubber Duckie Race in the Conestoga River.

This year, the festival will incorporate several races for the first time since it began 36 years ago, including the Duckie Dash at 3 p.m., the Duckie Dash relay at 3:30 p.m. and the Duckling Dash at 2:30 p.m. The Duckie Dash will entail a 1-mile race that is open to runners 13 years old and above. was certainly a leader who would teach and mentor not just myself, but everyone in the department,” added Frankford.

When Frankford and his fellow members of the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company learned about the annual LCFA

awards, Frankford said that they immediately knew whom to nominate. “It was a no-brainer for us,” said Frankford. “I can’t say enough good things about the man. There aren’t many people like him in the world, and we wanted him to know he wasn’t taken for granted.”

Tips for staying cool and preventing illness

As the summer season officially beings, the Lancaster County Office of Aging has offered tips to beat the heat.

People are advised to wear loose-fitting clothing and stay somewhere with air conditioning. They should avoid hot foods and heavy meals. It is also important to stay hydrated, but people should avoid drinking alcohol or liquids with large amounts of sugar. When going outside, people should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. A cool shower or bath can be rejuvenating when temperatures are high.

It is important to stay informed and learn how to prevent, recognize, and treat heat-related illnesses. Exposure to high temperatures, particularly when humidity is high and people perform strenuous physical activity, can cause three heat-related illnesses. Heat cramps is the mildest, followed by heat exhaustion, which happens when the body overheats. Without prompt treatment, this condition can lead to heatstroke, a life-threatening condition.

Senior luncheon posted

The next Millersville senior luncheon will be held on Monday, July 22, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

The per-person cost includes the meal, entertainment, and door prizes. Tickets for giveaway drawings will also be available for purchase. Elvis impersonator Jeffrey Krick Jr. will perform.

Everyone over age 55 is welcome. Reservations are required by Monday, July 15, by calling Faye Siglin at 717-872-5811. To cancel a reservation, call Siglin.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion may start suddenly or progress over time, especially with prolonged periods of exercise. The symptoms can include cool, moist skin with goosebumps when in the heat; heavy sweating; faintness; dizziness; fatigue; weak, rapid pulse; low blood pressure upon standing; muscle cramps; nausea; and headache. If a person believes he or she has heat exhaustion, the person should stop all activity and move to a cooler place to rest. The person should drink cool water or sports drinks, and if symptoms worsen or do not improve within one hour, he or she should consult a doctor.

Anyone who is with someone who has heat exhaustion should seek immediate medical help if the person becomes confused or distressed, loses consciousness, or is unable to drink. If the person’s core body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, the person needs immediate cooling and urgent medical attention.

a variety of items featuring locally grown tomatoes will be available to purchase. This includes the community-favorite tomato sandwich, which entails thick slices of fresh tomatoes that are often enjoyed with mayonnaise, bacon, lettuce and onion.

Each day of the Tomato Festival will feature a performance from a different artist; Border Line will perform on July 13, and July 20 will include entertainment from 3 Hour Tour.

The Tomato Festival was adopted by the Lions Club in 1958, after local farmers created the event as a way to celebrate Washington Boro’s special connection to tomatoes. Washington Boro’s farmland, which sits adjacent to the Susquehanna River, contains a mixture of soil and sand. The unique blend of soil often allows farmers to yield a greater number of

tomatoes from their crops.

The festival has been held annually for more than 60 years, but it has evolved into more than just a place to buy delicious tomatoes. The Washington Boro Fire Company took over the management of the event in 1992, and the Tomato Festival is now run by Blue Rock Fire Rescue.

“It’s a true community event, and people come from all over the county every year,” said Richard Schock, a member of the Tomato Festival’s planning committee. “Even after it’s over at 9 p.m., local farmers and a lot of people always stick around just to talk and enjoy the breeze we get from the river.”

The festival’s planning committee is always accepting volunteers to help with the event. For more information, contact Schock at 717-951-6411.

Program to focus on grist mills

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a slideshow presentation on “Lancaster County Grist Mills” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Donald Kautz, who is a local historian, an amateur photographer, and the author of the recently published book “Mills of Lancaster County.”

Kautz, who has conducted extensive research on the county’s water-powered grist mills, noted that most of them are gone, but about 100 remain. The mills were the hubs of Lancaster County’s economy, often dictating the formation of regional road networks since many of them also served as the local post offices where people went to get their mail and catch up with the news while waiting for the crops they had brought in to be processed. Kautz’s presentation will include a brief history of milling and water-powered mill technology, stories of the mills, and information about uses of the mills that currently exist. A question-and-answer session will end the meeting.

Kautz is also the author of “The Conestoga River: A History.” Copies of his books will be available at the meeting.

He and his wife are residents of Lancaster County. Although admission

is free, donations will be accepted. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-8728837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.

four may sign up for the Duckie Dash relay, which will include a quarter-mile run that participants will complete wearing a duckie floatie. Children ages 2 to 5 and 6 to 12 may compete in the 100-meter Duckling Dash. Participants in each race will receive refreshments at the end of the run and 10 festival tickets. Those who sign up for the Duckie Dash will receive one entry in a prize drawing, and prizes will be given to the team that places first in the relay race. Race winners will be announced at 4 p.m. All participants who sign up before Thursday, Aug. 1, will receive a commemorative T-shirt and an early-bird discount on the

cost of registration.

The festival will be free to attend, but tickets must be purchased to participate in the festival’s various activities, such as carnival games and pony rides. Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food

trucks, including Scoops Ice Cream and Grille, Cupcakes by Casey, Walk-O Taco and Dunkin’ Community Cruiser.

Traditionally, the event has included the Rubber Duckie Race, which entailed dumping thousands of rubber ducks into the Conestoga River. To make the fundraiser more environmentally friendly, Schreiber will not drop any rubber ducks into the river, but supporters may still adopt a duck online with a donation to the organization. Similarly to years past, adopting a duck will include an entry in a prize drawing.

“We wanted to find a way to bring the festival to our campus,” said Schreiber’s marketing and communications manager, Alexandra Cahill. “This is where all of our families and clients are comfortable, and it’s accommodating for people with mobility issues.”

For the past 36 years, the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival has served as one of Schreiber’s largest fundraisers, and it often draws more than 1,000 attendees. The funds raised from the event are used to cover the organization’s general expenses and treatment costs for patients who are unable to pay the full amount.

For more information or to register for a race, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies/.
