Making Purple People

M

For Lancaster city kids, SWAN song is beginning, not an end BY JEFF FALK

There are few things more detrimental to development than kids growing up without parental figures. Conversely, there are few things that possess more healing power than music. Scaling Walls A Note at a Time (SWAN) is performing some wonder ful work with music and kids in the School District of Lancaster who have

been affected by their parents’ incarceration. An organization without a brick-and-mortar building or office, SWAN is currently ser ving about 80 Lancaster city kids ages 5 to 17. “SWAN’s music and mental health program is a unique and innovative model,” said Diana Vuolo, SWAN’s founder and executive director. “The School District of Lancaster gets to be leaders. There is a mental See SWAN pg 4

leaves” said Marie, who is creating a game called LEAFO that will be similar to bingo. Twenty Purple People have completed the program, and up to seven attend the monthly meetings. Marie’s interest in starting Purple People was born of a trip to Russia she took in 2013 with her husband, Richard. Through a New York state violet grower, the couple was able to meet Vladimir Kelgin, known as the man who brought African violets to Russia, at his violet shop in Moscow. Kelgin explained to Marie that violets are only for beauty. “They aren’t like potatoes (that you can eat),” said Marie. “He wanted to bring beauty to Russia.” Following the tr ip, Mar ie has kept in touch with Kelgin when he visits the U.S. “I have this ring that is engraved with the Russian word for violet,” said Marie. “It’s to remind me of his hospitality and what he’s doing bringing beauty to the

R u ss i an p e ople. I kept thinking I could bring beauty to The Factory participants.” In November 2023, when she was a vendor at the Mid-Atlantic African Violet Society show in Gettysburg, Marie entered a number of plants she had showered with extra love and attention. She won f ive best in class awards, along with best miniature and semi-miniature in show. “I was f loating,” recalled Marie. “I never (expected to win). That gave me a real lift.” For more information about the next Purple People session, readers may call 717-687-9594. Marie Glass with a few of her many African violets

Don’t distract the dog! Service animal etiquette shared BY ANN MEAD ASH

It started with a Facebook post that alerted readers as to what to do if approached by a lone dog in a service vest. The post advised following the dog because the canine’s person might be in trouble. While the advice seemed reasonable, suspicion of such posts alerted this feature writer to seek an opinion from the staff of United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dog program. Puppy coordinator Kr isty Conrad confir med that the United Disabilities Services service dogs (from left) Quincy, Josh, and advice is good. “If a service dog Lacey hope that people will not interrupt them when they are working

arie Glass, former Pequea Valley School District teacher and current volunteer at The Factory Ministries, cannot remember how she first became interested in African violets, but she knows she first started growing them in the 1970s. Marie’s early ventures with the tiny purple flowers involved fellow members of a Leacock Presbyterian Church Sunday school class who worked with her to grow hundreds of plants that were sold in the church basement to raise funds for the newly opened Welsh Mountain Medical Center. “We sold starter plants for 25 cents a pot,” recalled Marie, who stated that the same size plant now sells for nearly $10. “We sold enough to make $1,800 for the medical center.” Two years ago, Marie started Purple People, a series of eight

classes held each spring at The Factory. “Every week we learn about a different type of violet and the people who grow them,” said Marie, who provides all the supplies and literature for the classes. “We learn about bugs and diseases.” Students are also familiarized with the resources to identify violets registered with the African Violet Society of America. “There are about 15,000 international registered violets,” said Marie, who keeps 450 varieties among the 600 plants at her home. Marie shares stories of hybridizers, some of whom have faced great adversity, to offer encouragement to students. During the eight weeks, participants learn how to grow their own violets and fix their mistakes. A flower show is held at the end of the sessions, and the students officially become “Purple People.” The group meets the second Thursday of every month at The Factory. “We discuss and share

These answers led to discussion of general service dog etiquette that respects the dog’s owner or handler - things we should all be

aware of when we see a dog working in public. UDS service dogs wear colored vests to alert others to the dog’s working status. According to Conrad, UDS’ service dogs and service dogs in training wear red vests, while ambassador dogs wear blue and facility dogs wear purple. Often service dog vests are printed with words admonishing members of the public not to pet the dog or to ask before

dog’s purpose in serving its person. “What if the dog is doing something for their person?” pointed out Breece, who noted that the dog may be focused on retrieving anything from a cane to a credit card from a wallet. “The task the dog is doing is important to the person’s independence,” she said. “Just don’t distract the dog.” Conrad suggested thinking of the dog in the same way one would any other a s s i s t i ve d e v i ce . “ Yo u wouldn’t hinder someone

using their wheelchair or cane,” she stated. Breece stated that the same advice holds for service dogs in training. “Out of respect for the handler, please ask,” she said. “Maybe they are doing some work or training, and if you try to play with the dog, you distract the dog.” Breece made it clear that not all disabilities are readily apparent. “Don’t assume because you can’t see the disability that the person doesn’t have one,” she said, noting that UDS has clients

with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), who really need their service dogs. “PTSD is a medical diagnosis a service dog can assist with,” she said, noting that one client almost gave up using a dog because of comments made to him about not needing one. Instead, he persevered and has become an advocate for the program. Individuals wishing to lear n more may email lorig@udservices.org, call 717-715-8753, or visit https://udservices.org.

Vollmar went further, noting, “The public should not be soliciting the dog’s attention (in any way),” she said. “Don’t make noises. Don’t talk. Don’t look. She also said that there are 900 to 1,000 homeless children in the city of Lancaster and that many of them are affected

There could be alcohol or drug abuse involved. Children can experience domestic violence.” “Parents are the primary people that children trust,” continued Vuolo. “When that is removed, trust is

On Oct. 22, L ancaster-based music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Country Rock Group of the Year award at the ninth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The Jess Zimmerman Band is led by Jess Heitz, who is accompanied by guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis. This is the second year the outfit has been nominated for awards at the ceremony, which was hosted at the famous American country music venue the Grand Ole Opry. Last year, T h e Je s s Z i m m e r m a n Band received the Album of the Year award for its debut album “Breathe.” T his year, in addition to being nominated for multiple awards, the band performed during the ceremony. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, only 10 artists were selected to play at the event. “It was really one of the biggest highlights of the year,” Heitz said. “The Grand Ole Opry is iconic for country music.” The

Jess Zimmerman Band performed songs from an album released in May, titled “Be The Light.” “The idea behind ‚ÄòBe The Light’ was putting together something that puts you in a good place when you listen to it,” said Heitz. “It’s bright and bold, and it shines through.” The group began to work on the album at the end of 2022, and it will be submitted for the 2024 Josie Music Awards. The Josie Music Awards specifically highlight independent artists, as in musicians who are not signed to a record label. Without a label, independent artists like The Jess Zimmerman band manage their own re c o rd i n g , p ro d u c i n g , touring and marketing. “Breathe ” and “Be T he Light” were both recorded at Omnisound Studios in Nashville, and Heitz and her bandmates have remained busy with and performing shows throug hout the East Coast, Midwest and South. Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township A Native American chief shaped 200 years of American history and was celebrated as the patron saint of the new nation. Tamanend, a 17th-century Lenni Lenape chief, was a friend and ally of English Quaker William Penn, who settled the region we know as Pennsylvania (Penn’s Woods) in 1682. First honored as a patron saint by Washington’s troops, Tamanend, also referred to as Tammany, soon became patron saint of the whole American army. “ Tammany … pl aye d a prominent role in the establishment of peaceful relations among the Native American tribes and the English settlers who established Pennsylvania,” reported www.Del awareTribe.org, the official website of the Delaware tribe of Native Americans. A ccording to author Leon Nelson Nichols, John Adams wrote to future first lady Abigail about Tammany, saying, “The people here have sainted him and keep his day.” After inspiring American patriots in the 18th century, Tammany shaped American politics in the 19th centur y and was celebrated in American popular culture well into the 20th centur y, most notably on the uniforms of

professional sports teams.” During the Revolutionary War … stories of a patriotic and wise Indian chief … circulated through the Colonies, (taking) a strong hold upon the minds of the soldiers,” Nichols wrote. The first original American opera, “Tammany: The Indian Chief,” was performed at John Street Theatre in Manhattan in 1794. Tammany appears in James Fenimore Cooper’s classic 1826 American novel, “The Last of the Mohicans.” A statue of Tammany keeps watch over the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. A Tammany statue also enjoys a place of prestige across from Philadelphia City Hall. The edifice itself is topped by the image

of Tamanend’s English “brother” Penn. Tammany also serves as a silent sentinel to the heroes of Gettysburg. New York’s 42nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment - the Tammany Regiment - fought heroically on the infamous Pennsylvania battlefield. The image of Tammany stands atop a monument to these men who helped defeat slavery. Tammany became a model of aspiration after the American Revolution. Patriotic Tammany societies proliferated around the nation. The Tammany Society’s constitution used in 1790 reads: “It shall connect in the indissoluble bonds of Patriots Friendship, American Brethren of known attachment to the Political

Rights of Human Nature and the Liberties of this Country.” Yes, Tammany, like Columbia in an earlier United States, was viewed as a personification of the ideal of human liberty. James Gaffney brought Chief Tammany to American professional sports. In 1912, he purchased the National League’s Boston Rustlers, renaming the team the Boston Braves to honor Tammany. He added the Lenni Lenape’s image to the team’s uniforms. Babe Ruth played for the Boston Braves in 1935 and last played wearing the face of the patron saint of America on his sleeve. Tammany later adorned Braves uniforms as the franchise moved to Milwaukee and then Atlanta. “The American ideals of human right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ spring chiefly from original American sources and were developed on American soil for untold centuries before Europeans arrived on this continent,” historian and biographer of early Americans Joseph White Norwood wrote in his 1938 book “The Tammany Legend.” “These ideals are therefore so distinctively native to the soil that they should be known as the first Americans knew them, by a name that completely symbolizes them. This name is Tamanend.” Information gathered for this article was gleaned from an essay by Kerry J. Byrne written in June 2023 and www.hiddencityphila.org.

She added that the organization is always looking for new opportunities to sell the scarves on a consignment basis, with the product currently available at Kindred Collections, Lancaster Sweet Shoppe in downtown Lancaster, Divine Consign in Manheim and New Holland Coffee Co. “Also, we accept donations of clothing that can be cut into strips to

be used in the making of scarves,” Impink said. “Sports scarves sell very well, and we always take donations of clothing with any sports team’s logo on them, high school, college or professional.” For more information on Binding Love or to register for the workshop, visit www.bindinglove.org.

Railroad Ramble scheduled

The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania have scheduled their first Ramble of 2024, the Mason-Dixon Ramble on Sunday, May 19. Travelers will ride the rails north of the Mason-Dixon Line in Pennsylvania on the Northern Central Railway, where the train ride will follow the route of the original railroad. A photo runby is slated here, and the conductor will present a narration of the history of the towns along the tracks. South of the Mason-Dixon Line, travelers will ride on the Walkersville Southern Railroad through farmland in Maryland and may photograph the locomotive move from the train yard to the station. Also included in this customized day Ramble are roundtrip, chartered motorcoach transportation from Lititz or Harrisburg, lunch at a local restaurant in New Freedom, dinner at the historic Glen Rock Mill Inn, all taxes and gratuities for included features and a travel escort. There is a discount for current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Travelers must register before Friday, Feb. 16. For complete details, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org. More information about the museum is available by visiting the aforementioned website or calling 717-687-8628.
