“There are so many amazing opportunities right in our backyard,” said Jared Erb, First Choice Career Coordinator with Pequea Valley School District. “But unless you get out and see them, it’s hard to grasp.”
Erb aims to introduce Pequea Valley High School students to the many local career opportunities available to them at the Pequea Valley First Choice Career Fair to be held at the school on Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Students in ninth through 12th grades will each have about an hour to attend. Students will hear a motivational speaker, have time to visit displays, and talk with representatives of up to 50 community partners, including businesses, secondary learning institutions, and other organizations.
“Each grade level … will hear about career opportunities and how to make the most of those in
this day and age,” said Erb, who noted that the goals for students will vary by grade. “Ninth-graders will hear stories from our community and learn about opportunities to gain career exposure,” said Erb. Tenth-graders, who have been taking part in a mentoring program, will hear more from mentors about their specific jobs in the context of their employers. “(Sophomores) are looking forward to a job shadowing day in March,” said Erb, who added that juniors will be scouting for internship opportunities in their senior years. “Seniors will be looking for employment opportunities and understanding their next steps beyond graduation,” pointed out Erb.
Erb has been recruiting companies to take part in the fair, paying special attention to industry clusters that have greater needs. “We are pretty heavy in food service, and we have a number of construction companies,” said Erb, who listed
Luthercare, Stoltzfus Meats, High Industries, and Sharp Innovations, which does website design and marketing, among those lined up to attend. In addition, representatives of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology; HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College; Lancaster Bible College; and the Army National Guard will be present.
“It’s a chance for our kids to introduce themselves and tell their stories in a professional manner,” noted Erb, who explained that students will be prepared to name their top career choice, explain why they are interested in that field, and discuss what strengths they bring to that area. “There are lots of opportunities for those who are hungry and able to present themselves well,” said Erb. “We are trying to connect students to those opportunities.”
Community organizations that would like to take part in the career fair may email jared_erb@pequeavalley.org.

Few sights in nature can compare to a pristine blanket of white snow covering the countryside. Unfortunately, a wonderland of snow conceals dangers related to slips and falls, shoveling, and even overdoing winter sports. The good news is that with some preparation many injuries may be avoided.

When Frank Gaston completed the Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) program at the end of December 2020, he knew he needed to avoid going back to the life he had when he was addicted. “I started praying,” recalled Gaston, who was seeking God’s counsel on what to do next. The answer had four wheels. “I have always worked on cars. They are my hobby,” Gaston said. Before completing the RTCM program, Gaston had worked in warehousing, but he also hustled cars. “I would buy a car from people if I knew they needed money,” said Gaston, who soon realized what God was calling him to do. “(God) told me to (buy and sell cars) for good (purposes),” Gaston revealed.

Pequea Valley Crushes Lancaster Mennonite 76-35
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team won its Lancaster-Lebanon League game on Thursday, January 5, in dominant fashion, 76-35, at Lancaster Mennonite.
“We came out early with defensive pressure and forced 27 turnovers,” head coach Jason McDonald said. “We moved the ball well and hit shots early to get a 4914 lead.
“We played hard and applied our will to put the game out of reach early,” McDonald added.
As for the turnovers, Janae Patterson not only led all scorers with 17 points, she also finished with five steals to help Pequea defensively. The freshman also pulled down four rebounds. Bre Beiler led the team in boards with eight. She also scored eight points as did Katie Stoltzfus, who also grabbed four rebounds.
Both Patterson and Peyton Henshaw had a three-point basket. Henshaw finished with 11 points and three rebounds.
The Braves followed that win with a non-league victory at home over Tulpehocken, trouncing the Trojans 61-27 and extended their win streak to six games by beating Annville-Cleona on Tuesday
evening 39-25. The victory over Annville improved the Braves’ L-L League record to 3-1 (11-1 overall).
In what would be the Braves’ 10th win of the year on Saturday afternoon, January 7, the defense held the Trojans scoreless in the second stanza.
Patterson (21 pts) made nine baskets on the day, including a three-pointer. Her contributions to the win also came in the form of eight steals, three rebounds and a pair of assists.
Henshaw and Trinity Rosa each contributed eight points while Shania Stoltzfus scored seven - all from the field - to go with five assists and six rebounds.
“We got off to a slow start then started making shots in the second quarter,” McDonald explained. “We moved the ball well on offense and were able to get great shots. After the first quarter, we were able to get our transition going and converted easy layups.
“We were able to get experience for the kids that will help us down the road,” he added.
Patterson reached double digits in scoring in the A-C game as well. She scored 17 points on her home court to go with seven steals, four assists and five rebounds.
In regard to holding the Dutchmen to only 25 points,
McDonald said, “We executed our defensive game plan as we held Annville’s leading scorer to two points and five rebounds.”
Annville-Cleona’s Ava Hoover had been averaging 12.4 points per game coming into this game. Annville’s top scorer on the night was Ainsley Sellers with seven points.
Katie Stoltzfus scored eight for the Braves. Arment had five points and four rebounds. Shania Stoltzfus and Beiler (4 pts) each nabbed four steals.
“I think we’re forcing like 24 turnovers a game,” McDonald added. “We have been rebounding the ball much better this year; we’re more fundamentally sound there, boxing out better.”
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Lancaster Mennonite’s tough defense in the opening period of the L-L League boys’ basketball game on Thursday evening, January 5, helped the Blazers go on to post a 4831 victory at Pequea Valley.
Though the Braves responded with 13 points in the second stanza, they didn’t quite overtake Mennonite. The Blazers were led by David Weaver and Chase Hurst, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Joerick Irizarry was the leading scorer for the Braves (2-9, 0-1 league) with seven points. Myles Furlong’s six
points all came on his threepoint baskets. Jackson Neff also scored six on the night.
Tulpehocken came to town on Saturday for a non-league contest. The Trojans and Braves were tied 10-10 heading into the second quarter of this game. That was when the visitors outscored the Braves 23-13 en route to a 68-43 victory.
Irizarry scored 10 to top the Braves. Nathan Blank swooshed in a pair of treys and finished with eight points in the game. Neff, Luke Rogers and Hugh Johnson each scored seven points.
WRESTLING
The Braves competed at the Line Mountain Duals on Saturday, January 7. Pequea Valley’s wrestling team went winless on the day. Zach Hollenbaugh and Katrina Kilby each earned six uncontested points in their respective weight classes of 189 and 107 as Palmerton came away with a 40-12 victory. There were five weight classes that the Braves forfeited and in this particular match, four uncontested matches by both sides.
The Braves fell to 0-10 on the year.
Zach Hollenbaugh and Lincoln Houck each registered a pin in Pequea Valley’s Wednesday evening Section Three match with the Octorara
Braves at Pequea. Houck, a sophomore earned his pin 1:20 into the 114pound bout, evening the score of the match at 6-6. The Octorara Braves, however, went on to top the PV Braves 53-18 with Pequea’s only other points coming on an Octorara forfeit at the 285-
pound bout. Evan Stoltzfus was
the six uncontested team points in that one.
Fellow senior Hollenbaugh came up with a pin 42 seconds into the 189-pound bout, downing Adrian Nunez.
Pequea had to forfeit five weight classes, granting 30 of the 53 points to the visitors.

Staying Safe
said Wagner, who noted that hip and femoral fractures are common as are rotator cuff and back issues related to shoveling.
To help prevent injuries, Wagner recommends a yearround regimen to increase strength, balance, and flexibility. Both aerobic and endurance exercises are good choices, and stretching is always recommended. “Stretching is a big thing, especially in winter,” said Wagner. “When it’s cold out, muscles tend to tighten up.” So loosening up for sports activities or tasks like shoveling can make a difference. “If you’re not stretching and you’re not used to strenuous activity, you put yourself at risk for strain or tendonitis,” Wagner noted.
Footwear that is appropriate for the weather is another concern. Wagner recommends nonslip, nonskid shoes with rubber soles that are not too worn and that fit well. Arch support may be necessary to help some improve their gait and avoid falls. Dressing for the weather means layering warm clothing and wearing gloves. This is especially important for those who participate in winter sports and anticipate being outside for extended periods of time.
Shoveling is a necessity for many, but it is also an activity that can lead to several types of injuries. When shoveling, Wagner said to watch your posture. “Use your knees and hips,” he advised. “Keep your back straight, and don’t lift more than you can handle.”
Because cold weather can increase chances of injury, avoid sudden twists. Instead, take extra steps to move snow. “Listen to your body,” cautioned Wagner, who recommended breaks to warm up every 10 to 15 minutes.
Another precaution, which is especially important for seniors, is keeping up to date on physicals and eye examinations to be sure prescription medications and eyewear are correct. Be aware that over-the-counter cold and flu remedies can cause drowsiness and increase chances of stumbling. It is not only seniors who need to be more careful during the harsher months. Wagner noted, “(Winter) injuries can happen to anyone.”
Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmount homes.org.

Improper shoveling techniques can lead to winter injuries.
Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.
Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.
DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to
100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.
DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.
DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three
servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.
DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.
DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.
DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.
DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age,
goals and current health status.
DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of calorie-counting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.
DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods. Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some timetested techniques.

Slow Down Ministries
frompg 1
The result is Slow Down Ministries - an organization that currently provides cars for graduates of Christ-centered programs like RTCM, Revelations of Freedom Ministries, The Potter’s House, and The Potter’s House of Ruth. Gaston, whose title is founder/director, explained that often individuals in recovery have a special need for low-cost transportation. “A lot of times, people in addiction have lost everything, so when they complete a program, they are starting fresh,” he noted. “(A graduate) may get a job, say, on a farm in Morgantown, but then there’s no way to get them there, and they feel defeated and they may relapse,” Gaston explained. Slow Down Ministries can fill the transportation gap by providing a car at a reasonable price.
To fulfill that mission, Gaston currently works with Andrew Lockman of Clearview Complete Auto Care in New Holland, who donates time and garage space to evaluate donated vehicles or ones Gaston has purchased. Cars that cannot be repaired are sold for scrap.
Gaston’s dream is to expand the ministry to provide cars for more community members in need. “Down the road, we would like to provide cars for
others who can’t afford them,” he said. “That is something we are working on.”
What Gaston needs to make that dream happen is more community support. “I need (volunteer) time, money, parts, labor, whatever the community can give,” said Gaston. Slow Down Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a four-member board. Contributors will receive a tax receipt for donations of funds or vehicles.
Gaston knows that growing the ministry will depend on God. Recently, he connected with Christian MissionaryTechnical Services of Reading, an organization which has provided vehicles to missionaries on furlough. The ministry has an abundance of cars to sell, and Gaston sees the opportunity to salvage some of those vehicles for his ministry.
“I want to do more,” said Gaston, who noted that the name Slow Down is the opposite of “hustle.” “(The name) reminds me to stay focused,” he said.
Readers who would like to know more may search for “Slow Down Ministries” on Facebook. Those who have specific questions may call 717723-7253 or email slowdown ministries@gmail.com.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., will host its first Regional History Colloquium of 2023, featuring a lecture provided by Andrew Diemer. The event will open its doors at 5 p.m., followed by Diemer’s lecture at 5:30 p.m. Diemer is an author and a history professor at Towson University, and he will discuss his most recent book, titled “Vigilance: The Life of William Still, Father of the Underground Railroad.” The book describes the life of William Still and the role that he played during the American Civil War. “(The book) focuses on his whole life, but heavily concentrates on the Underground Railroad,” said Diemer. “Looking at the Underground Railroad is essential; it shapes the rest of Still’s life.”
Still was born in New Jersey in 1821 to parents who had escaped slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Still’s father was a former slave who purchased his own freedom, and his mother was a former slave who fled the South. “Still’s family drove his involvement in the Underground Railroad and the pursuit of civil rights,” said Diemer.
Diemer was first intrigued by Still’s story while writing his first book, an academic study of free black communi-
ties struggling with citizenship rights. Diemer’s perception was that Still only aided with the freeing of slaves through the Underground Railroad and out of the public eye, but he was surprised to discover that Still often gave speeches and wrote public letters to support the cause.
“Still doesn’t place himself in the front of the stories that he tells,” said Diemer. “He wrote an enormous book later in his life that highlighted the fugitive slaves themselves, instead of those such as himself who helped them.”
Although the nature of Still’s work is different from that of Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery herself and physically helped to free slaves in the South, it was just as significant, Diemer noted. Still built networks of activists and developed their communica-
tion channels, which proved to be instrumental in the struggle.
“The fight against slavery and the various forms that it takes are of particular interest to me,” Diemer said. “My book shows how expansive this struggle is.” Still was primarily focused on freeing slaves, but he helped with a variety of other things such as recruiting soldiers for the Union and helping people find work after the war. Still was heavily involved with desegregation movements and fought for black Americans’ right to vote.
“One important thing to take away from Still’s life is the importance of telling stories,” Diemer said. “Not only did he help fugitive slaves, but when the time came to tell their stories, he made sure the story was told in a way that gave justice to them.”
The lecture will be free and open to the public in person and streamed online via Zoom. To register to attend in person, call 717-392-4633. To attend virtually, visit https://tinyurl.com/stilllecture.

GiGi’s Playhouse Promotes Achievement For Those With Down Syndrome
BY JEFF FALK
Three years.
Thirty-six months of exploring the differences and similarities between people.
One thousand ninety-five days of altering the world’s perception of a common condition.
Twenty-six thousand, two hundred eighty hours of helping people with Down syndrome function better in their world.
On Jan. 11, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster conducted its third birthday party, celebrating three years of serving the local Down syndrome community. It was a special milestone for the special place located at 2503 Oregon Pike.
Over those years, GiGi’s
Playhouse has enhanced the lives of hundreds of participants from Lancaster, York and beyond. Yet in many ways, GiGi’s Playhouse is just getting started.
“When we opened three years ago, it was exciting,” said Christine Hewitt, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s site coordinator, “because there were support groups, but there wasn’t anything in the area like it. The main goal is to change the way people view Down syndrome. Everything we do here is designed to help people with Down syndrome do their best. But we also support their families.”
More than a playhouse or even a school, GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome
achievement center. The Lancaster location serves nearly 380 participants and their families through hands-on programs, tutoring, exercise classes, activities, arts and crafts and life skill-building sessions, all free of charge.
GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s participants range in age from infants to those 60 years of age. Hewitt is the lone paid employee, but she’s supported by a staff of more than 40 volunteers.
“We practice a lot of like skills here,” said Hewitt, a resident of Ephrata. “We focus so much on little steps, on the next steps they can do. Here, we celebrate little wins. They’re little things we take for granted.”

When the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices.
There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact. Whatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.
First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other
tracking tool. A digital to-do list manager, for example, enables people to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts and needs as they come up.
Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.
It is important to conquer
clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and organizing when clutter has gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.
Another strategy is to categorize emails. Individuals can utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing, such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the
time-consuming task of scrolling through a full inbox.
When bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.
“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school.
The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day.
Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.
GiGi’s Playhouse
“People often think people with Down syndrome can’t do things,” continued Hewitt. “The truth is they can. They’re just going to need more time or a little help. They’re so capable of so much.”
GiGi’s Playhouse bears the name of GiGi Gianni, who was born with Down syndrome in Chicago more than 20 years ago. Since the first GiGi’s Playhouse was founded, 54 other locations have been opened, including the one in Lancaster, the only site in Pennsylvania.
“Since we opened, people have really come out,” said
frompg 11
Hewitt. “How quickly we’ve grown is surprising. We’ve outgrown this building. But what’s also surprising is how much of an impact it has had on our participants.”
“It’s allowed them to become their best selves,” added Hewitt. “I’ve seen so many participants come out of their shells. This is like a home to them. They are safe here. They take a lot of pride in this place.”

Glaucoma Resources Available
In observance of National Glaucoma Awareness Month, January, Prevent Blindness is offering a variety of resources for glaucoma patients and their caregivers at www.Pre ventBlindness.org/glaucoma. The resources include educational content, fact sheets, and shareable graphics.
Among the available resources is The Glaucoma Community, which provides users with a newsfeed on glaucoma, a community chat, a Facebook page, educational materials in several languages, and more. The Glaucoma Community may be accessed by visiting the aforementioned website and looking under “Glaucoma” in the list
on the left side of the page.
Additionally, Prevent Blindness recently updated and redesigned its “Living Well With Low Vision” resource, created for patients, caregivers, and health care professionals. The site offers free directories, a library of selfhelp guides, downloadable apps, and news that may be relevant to people living with glaucoma and significant visual impairment.
Also new this year is a free webpage and downloadable fact sheet, “Glaucoma Financial Assistance Information,” designed specifically to help people receive access to the eye care services they need to help save their sight.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted
County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.
The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.
There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A portion of the funds are used to purchase
emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.
According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.
For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www .lancastercountyparks.org.
