USCGA Changes Leadership
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s new officers - (from left) Richard Young, Curtis Miller, Elizabeth Pittinger and Joseph Bartolo - are sworn in.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGA) held a change of watch on Dec. 4 at Bolger Conference Center on the campus of Millersville University.
The two units, the Lancaster and York Flotillas, swore in new commanders and vice commanders, as well as several staff officers who collectively will lead auxiliary activities throughout the area during 2022. Elected officers Richard Young of Manheim Township and Curtis Miller of Brownstown are the new commander and vice commander, respectively, for Lancaster. Elizabeth Pittinger of Red Lion and Joseph Bartolo of Mount Wolf will assume the leadership for York.
With approximately 2300 members, the auxiliary has recreational boating safety as its primary mission, but as a component of Team Coast Guard supports the activeduty element in all areas except law enforcement and combat. Locally, auxiliary volunteers conduct safe boating classes, perform courtesy vessel examinations, and operate safety patrols on the lower Susquehanna River.

Community Grant Program Opens
The Junior League of Lancaster Inc. (JLL) will accept applications for its 2021-22 Community Grant Program. This program seeks to further JLL’s current initiative, increasing educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for girls and other youths who have been historically underrepresented in these fields.
This year, the JLL will make grants of $1,250 to Lancaster County STEM nonprofit organizations for the purpose of hiring McCaskey High School students for paid summer internships with their organizations. The grants will go toward the salary or stipend that the student receives for his or her work.
All applications must be received before Friday, April 1. JLL will award all grants by Saturday, April 30. For application details and documents, visit www.jllancaster.org or email grants@jllancaster.org.
