PVHS to present “Newsies”
“T
his show is high e n e r g y,” s a i d Nathan Bankert, who is music director for “Newsies,” which is currently in rehearsals at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS). “The music is fun and exciting.” Bankert noted that members of the PVHS cast, especially Maddie Heverin, who plays Katherine, have been hoping to do the show for some time. Fellow director Mindy Lapp said that the show calls for a large number of roles with a cast of more than 50 student actors. “We had a big talent pool,” said Lapp. “ This was the year (to produce ‘Newsies’),” added Bankert. “Newsies - The Broadway Musical” will be produced at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.; Friday,
Feb. 23, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at https://pequeavalley.home townticketing.com/embed/ all?depts=4 or at the door 30 minutes prior to curtain time. According to Nick Ammon, who plays Jack Kelly, the show takes place in 1899 in New York City. “This group of newsies (newspaper sellers) are just living their everyday lives,” said Ammon, who noted that the newspaper, called The World, suddenly raises prices to the detriment of the newsies. “The newsies (organize) a strike,” said Ammon, who added the idea for the strike comes from Davey, played by Landon Waters, who recently began working as a newsboy and who has more education than his fellow paper sellers. During the strike, Katherine, a cub reporter, meets Jack
a nd t he y b e come “st a rcrossed” lovers, according to Ammon, who pointed out that Katherine’s true identity adds a twist to the tale. “(Katherine and Jack) form a connection over the strike and the story she is writing,” said Ammon, who noted that the newsies, including Crutchie, played by Alex Powell, meet Teddy Roosevelt, played by Spencer Groff. Challenges of staging the show include the large cast, many of whom appear in almost every musical and dance number. Choreographer Katie Adams is working to bring to life showstoppers such as “Carrying the Banner” and “Seize the Day.” There are several heavily choreographed fight scenes as well, and Waters, who has displayed his gymnastics ability in previous PVHS productions, is working to add some flips and other See PVHS pg 5

Agency seeks diaper donations Cornerstone Reproductive Health (formerly known as Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone) is currently in need of diaper donations. Especially needed are sizes 4 to 6, but all sizes are welcome. Donations can be dropped off at the Cornerstone office, located at 5280 Lincoln Highway, Gap. “People are asked to call and schedule a time to drop off donations on Mondays through Thursdays Olivia Imchen has announced that diapers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. are needed to stock the baby boutique.
We can schedule appointments around our clients,” explained Olivia Imchen, Cornerstone’s director of client services and advancement. The diapers will be used to supply Cornerstone’s baby boutique, which is currently running low. “When (clients) are involved in our parenting program, they can get diapers, wipes, formula and clothes from our baby boutique,” Imchen explained. Free diapers and formula are also donated to community members who are not involved in the program. “I have a list of

“The overall long-term objective is to give people in these fields the opportunity to stay in their fields,” said Jennifer T. Rummel, executive director with Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) stables, of the new Heroes and Horses program, an unmounted equine-assisted intervention for frontline workers and first responders first held in October of 2023. GMTRC pro gram director Steph Fleck reported that the free six-week program, which meets for two consecutive hours each

Although the program has a 10-member capacity, Fleck said she was pleased it started with a smaller group so that the feedback might be more meaningful. Prior to starting the program, GMT RC sur veyed the local first-responder community to find out what daily struggles might be leading them to consider a new career path. “We found a lot of ties to mental health (and) burnout,” said Fleck, who noted that GMTRC responded with See GMTRC pg 6

regulars who will call once a month, and we have others who were referred by a friend and are in need,” said Imchen. “Sometimes we can chat and talk about the classes that we offer. We connect one-on-one with them.” Parents can earn points to “purchase” baby items they may need by attending classes. “We have parenting classes, birth classes and prenatal classes,” Imchen said. “Each class is worth two points, and they have homework points they can accumulate as well. They use that for cribs, mattresses, car seats or Pack ‘n Plays. Everything is brand new, and it is all donated.” In addition to parenting classes, Cornerstone offers

relationship classes. “We have a curriculum that we bring into middle and high schools,” Imchen noted. “We talk about building a healthy relationship, recognizing the warning signs of abuse and breaking abuse patterns.” Cornerstone has presented the program at Solanco High School and at several private schools in the area. Plans call for the program to be presented again in February, which is observed as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. “We have a great relationship with the schools in the area,” noted Imchen. Cornerstone ser ves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free
pregnancy testing, ultrasound and prenatal and parenting incentive programs, among other services. “We have more services rather than just pregnancy resources,” said Imchen when explaining the agenc y ’s name change. “We changed over in the summer. We wanted it to be a little more medically focused and encompass more services and include men.” The agency is also working on staffing a mobile medical unit, which it acquired in November. Volunteers are needed to work in the unit, assisting nurses with patient appointments. “We are not using it quite yet. We are working on staffing it,” Imchen said. “It will offer the
same services we offer at the office, including pregnancy confirmation and ultrasound and STD testing.” To schedule a diaper donation, call 717-4428694 or email Imchen at Oli@pacornerstone.org. PVHS from pg 1 “Our ensembles have so much energy and enthusiasm at every rehearsal.” The show also gives students a chance to develop their individual characters, which Bankert called “rambunctious,” “unique,” and “quirky.” Ammon, who has previously appeared in Fulton Theatre productions and is considering studying theater in college, said that he is working on the meaty role he was
assigned. “This is a very emotional story for Jack K elly,” Ammon stated. “(Jack) starts off as the tough guy, but his layers get broken down (during the show). I am excited to portray that well.” Bankert called the story “triumphant.” “(The newsies) stand up for what they believe in,” he noted. “(The message is) you can do anything,” added Heverin.

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township A well-known and respected citizen of Gap has left us. Vernon Fisher, a businessman, restauranteur and longtime resident of Salisbur y Township, passed away in December 2023. Many will remember him and his wife, Thelma, as the owners and operators of the now-closed Gap Diner in Gap. It was once a favorite stop for tourists on their way to Maryland beaches and other points south. Joan Lorenz, author of “A History of Salisbury Township,” which was published in 2020, wrote about the Gap Diner. This is a tribute to the Fishers’ long association with that iconic symbol of good food. Lorenz wrote, in part, “One of the most recognizable, used and beloved landmarks is the Gap Diner, built in 1959. In 1975, Vernon and Thelma Fisher took over. They enlarged the eating area and provided a plentiful and varied menu. The diner was open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. closed only on Christmas

a pilot curriculum that discussed topics such as setting boundaries, encouraging healthy professional and personal relationships, and effective communication. “Individuals (in these fields) can feel very isolated with what they face and deal with daily,” noted Fleck , who added that activities related to selftalk, self-esteem, and positivity were included. Each participant was assigned a project horse, but the pairs were not chosen randomly. “Often when we introduce (participants), they find a natural and easy connection (with one horse) that is really organic,” said Fleck. “The horses kind of pick them.” As a participant works with a particular horse, a bond develops. “We did a lot of groundwork, which includes leading and learning different exercises to connect with the horse on the ground (rather than on horseback),” explained Fleck , who noted that grooming is part of the weekly routine because it provides “an initial connection time to be quiet and aware.” Other exercises were designed to coincide with the discussion topic. Skills challenges were also included. “The horses are really the teachers,” Fleck pointed out. “We just facilitate that communication back and forth.” Fleck said often an exercise ends with a request for feedback, which leads to discussion of how each participant experienced the events differently. “We have a lot of sharing time,” she noted. Hospital social worker Brittany Hershey, who took part in the first program, said she was searching for a
stress reliever that offered something different. “I was really looking for something where I could connect but not necessarily have to talk,” she stated. “I like to be able to sometimes not talk but still be able to work through emotions.” Hershey noted that the training she received helped her overcome any anxiety she felt about the large animals. “The education that (was) provided by the staff has given me much more confidence with being around (horses),” she said, pointing out that she loved getting to know the personality of her “quirky” project horse, Emmit. Rummel concurred, noting that working with a horse from the ground is a more personal experience. “C o nv e y i n g n o nv e r b a l messages to (the horses) is so much more mentally and psychologically stimulating (than being on horseback),” she noted. “It’s a different kind of experience.” Organizers plan to offer the program at GMTRC several times during 2024. Fleck pointed out that the curriculum can be customized and that the organization hopes to serve EMTs, police, firefighters, and both active-duty and retired military personnel in the future. Open enrollment programs and programs for specific entities - such as the personnel from one fire company could be accommo d ate d. Par ticipants who wish to bring along a support person would be welcome to do so. More information about GMTRC may be found at http://greystonemanor trc.org.

other sports during his offseasons from boxing,” said Van Brookhoven, who recounted that the original spelling of the family name is “Hauck.” “It’s a funny story,” explained Van Brookhoven. “One time a boxing promoter spelled Leo’s last name as ‘Houck’ accidentally, and he liked it, so he kept that as his last name in the ring.” Van Brookhoven also pointed out that Leo fought in ever y weight division, which he stated is “unheard o f in to d ay ’s game o f boxing.” According to Van Brookhoven, Leo sparred with Jack Dempsey twice, also facing a few International Boxing Hall of Fame members, including Frank Klaus, Jeff Smith, Gene Tunney, and Harry Greb. historian Johnny. “In 2018, Joe and I met a man named Randy Swope who wanted to write a book on Leo,” Van Brookhoven stated. “We met with Randy on many occasions and provided him with our resources.” When Swope published his book in 2019, Van Brookhoven was surprised to be given an acknowledgement. Known for his knowledge of local history and many presentations in Lancaster County over the last decade, Van Brookhoven first had the chance to talk about Leo’s boxing career for an East Petersburg Historical Society meeting on Oct. 2, 2023. Va n B r o o k h o v e n ’s multimedia presentation includes many pho tos of Leo’s days in the ring thanks in part to Johnny’s extensive collection. “(Leo) was a professional boxer for the first half of his life,” said Van Brookhoven, who added that Leo’s attachment to boxing did not end with his retirement. “He had a very successful career as a boxing coach at Penn State for 27 years,” said Van Brookhoven, who noted that Leo was married and fathered six children and that, after retiring from Penn State, he returned to Lancaster to live until his death in 1950. In his research, Van Brookhoven has collected a number of interesting facts about Leo. “He was very active in his community. He also played several

(One year) Reba Kauffman, Gap Diner waitress, made Gap Diner the top restaurant in the county for sales of those pins and was honored by the Restaurant Association. “ The Fishers were a l w ay s d e t e r m i n e d t o keep the diner open, no matter what the weather, sometimes picking up waitresses in four-wheel drive vehicle or snowmobiles. call on Lime Quarry Road. Michael Fisher (son of the owners) agreed to take him via a snowmobile if he was willing to make the trip. Of course, Dr. Beecher never f linched about the cold, the wind or drifting snow during the 6-mile round tr ip. His only comment was, ‚ÄòThat was the fastest house call I ever made!’ “For 11 years Vernon and Thelma Fisher served the public with an excellent reputation.” Under new management, the diner continued to serve the public until 2018. It had been for sale since.
“We want to push the virtual option,” said Carl Edwards, CrossNet Ministries director of development, of the annual banquet scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. The live event is sold out with nearly 900 guests to be seated at the event, but Edwards encourages those who are interested in hearing Nate Deen and updates on the work of the ministry to host a watch party at their home, business, or church. “Support a local restaurant by ordering dinner in that night,” stated Edwards, who noted that a guest
packet will be provided. “Those who are watching virtually will have all the materials and favors those at the tables (at Shady) have,” he explained. Nate, who was taken in by well-known Garden Spot High School teacher and drama club founder Stan Deen as a teenager, will share the story that inspired the film “Brave the Dark.” Born Nate Busko, the New Holland native was orphaned at an early age, and he was living out of his car when he and Stan first met. For more than 30 years, Nate has been involved in photography, theater, and film, and he is the founder of the Stan Deen Foundation, which

As in the past, Edwards will ser ve as master of ceremonies. “My portion is sharing who we are, what we do, ministry stories, and highlights,” said Edwards, who stated that Dahl will give an update on the ministry, which will include information on the purchase and remodel of a large warehouse on the south side of Franklin Street in New Holland. According to Edwards, remodeling of the building, which will allow expansion of the ministry’s offerings to the community, will begin within the next year. Edwards said the choice to have Nate speak grew out of CrossNet staff members considering the entire community when reflecting on this year’s speaker. “One of our staff members sent Meredith (Dahl, CrossNet executive director) and I the ‘Brave the Dark’ trailer, and it clicked (that) it’s the perfect time to highlight a local story,” he said. “I think it will be powerful.” “We are tapping into our roots.
