Christiana Ambulance Elects Officers, Seeks Volunteers

“Anew year brings new faces to your local ambulance service,” announced Ben Scheffel, new president of the Christiana Community Ambulance Association (CCAA). In addition to Scheffel, other officers elected during the January board meeting were George Stewart, vice president; Tim Zook, treasurer; and Brian Petersheim, recording secretary.

John Beyer and Paul Zook were also named as board members. “Together, we are excited to hit the ground running,” Scheffel said.

The new officers are part of CCAA’s revitalization effort, which includes adding more volunteers, improving its website and expanding its fleet of emergency vehicles.

“(The board) makes decisions about finances and equipment, goes over the chief’s report and (discusses) any issues coming up. Right now, it is the lack of volunteers,” Scheffel stated.

In early 2019, Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy Sr., owners of Tannery Antiques, 148 E. Main St., New Holland, were contacted by members of the board of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. The board wanted to move three paintings by local artist Milton E. Denlinger located in the basement of the building. After several months of negotiations, the 12.5-by-4.5-foot paintings had found a new home near the front of the couple’s shop.

CCAA, located at 55 Pine Creek Drive in Gap, is a nonprofit organization that serves a large portion of southeastern Lancaster County, as well as parts of western Chester County. The company responds to more than 1,000 calls per year.

Currently, WellSpan provides EMTs to CCAA to cover the daytime shift from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the evening shift from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. is covered by volunteers. “There are a few nights that are not covered, so that’s why we are seeking volunteers,” Scheffel noted. “Volunteers have to be EMT-certified. We can help people get their certification.”

In addition to medical personnel, CCAA is in need of other volunteers who can donate their time during either shift. Volunteer opportunities include washing the rigs and helping with technology needs.

In a volunteer recruitment letter posted on the CCAA website and Facebook page, Scheffel refers to volunteers as hometown heroes.

Describing the change to the former administrative offices in the Rutt Academic Center, which were remodeled into a MakerSpace and art room for elementary students, Kreider pointed out the room offers large windows, commenting, “It’s a beautiful space for kids to be creating (whether) in art class (or) doing hands-on design process … with art teacher Jenna Longenecker Conde.” Kreider also explained how former family consumer science classrooms were transformed into prekindergarten and kindergarten spaces, and she noted that elementary students have a new library media room in what was once a gathering space for high school students. Kreider also lauded the benefits of a larger gym and a new playground.

The unification also made Locust Grove’s Spanish immersion program an option for all elementary students. “We have a really thriving program in kindergarten where children are in full Spanish all day,” said Kreider, who added that both Spanish and English tracks are available to elementary students, with half the classes in middle school offered in Spanish and an Advanced Placement program in high school. Kreider pointed out that four stu-

dents from Spain are currently matriculating at LMS and that Lancaster-based students visited Spain during the summer of 2022 as part of that exchange program.

Using campus facilities to promote experiential learning has been the goal of an effort overseen by teacher Galen Sauder, who brings animals from home, including chicks and rabbits, to help teach students. “Because the campus is

wooded and has streams, (Sauder takes students) to explore those areas,” said Kreider, who noted that younger students are learning about trees or the life forms found in the creek and that high school students are studying forestry and biology in the outdoor setting.

Middle school students are utilizing the greenhouse and the agricultural technology area on the campus. “First

thing (when they arrive at school), they water plants ... and help take care of animals,” said Kreider. “(The students have a lot of dreams that keep growing because the kids are engaging with those opportunities (at the unified campus),” said Kreider.

LMS has served students in the Lancaster area since 1939. More information about LMS may be found at www.lancastermennonite.org.

“The Christiana Community Ambulance is recruiting volunteers to join in our mission of serving and building a sustainable community ambulance organization,” the statement reads. “With just a few hours a month, you can make a difference in the community and change lives forever.”

Scheffel, who is also a member of the Christiana Lions Club, said that the benefits of volunteering include making a difference in the community, gaining professional skills with hands-on learning, forming new friendships and joining people from different backgrounds with a common goal of helping others.

“2022 was a tough year with many hurdles to clear,” stated Scheffel. “(Board members) Michele Neckermann and Tim Manley weathered many storms that included volunteer shortages and board turnover but were able to hold CCAA together.”

“In August of 2022, CCAA hired a new chief, Corey Gossert,” Scheffel added. “Corey has over 30 years of experience in emergency

services and has held multiple leadership roles over that time.”

To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Gossert at 610-593-8166 or chief46@christianaems.org. More information about the CCAA is available at www.christianaems.org and www.facebook.com/Christiana Ambulance46.

The Ephrata Area Churches will hold their annual sportsmen’s banquet on Friday, March 10, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Attendees may browse various displays when the doors open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded.

The speaker will be Christian Berg, editor of Petersen’s Bowhunting Magazine and co-host of The

Bowhunting Podcast. In his presentation, “Hunting Smart for Whitetail Success,” Berg will offer insights on what it takes to get within shooting distance of wary, old whitetails. He will share the keys to consistent success and how to avoid costly mistakes.

Whitetail hunter Berg has hunted across North America, amassing a trophy collection that includes

seven bucks over 150 inches and two over 180 inches. Berg began his hunting career in the Keystone State and currently resides in Schuylkill County with his wife, two sons and Labrador retriever.

All creatures, all species need a place to call their own, a place to call home. But that’s especially true for a species as social and territorial as Canis lupus.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, is currently an adopted home for 54 displaced gray wolves and wolfdogs. All of the resident wolves are rescues, from different settings and difficult circumstances in places like Colorado, California, Florida, Canada and even more remote areas of Pennsylvania.

For most, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is their final stop, their forever home.

“We provide a lifelong home for displaced wolves,” said Michelle Mancini, the

Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania’s education coordinator. “They resemble their domestic relatives, but they don’t thrive in household settings. They’re built to live outdoors. They all come to us from different settings, but the most common is household settings. We also have wolves from a handful of other settings like zoos.”

Appropriately enough, more than 80 acres of natural woodlands west of Brickerville serve as the setting for the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. Its wolf population is broken down into pairs or packs based on demeanors and personalities, then housed in fencedin outdoor areas of 1 to 3 acres in size.

“There’s a lot of mystery surrounding wolves,” said Mancini. “They’re very important to their ecosystems. They’re super intelligent. They don’t respond well to training, but they do well in problem-solving. And they’re super strong.”

“As individuals, wolves are interesting to learn about,” Mancini continued. “They’re social, but it takes a long time for them to build trust. Some wolves may be very shy when they get here. Some may trust us over a long period of time, but we don’t force anything.”

“They are painted on Masonite, so they are heavy,” said Dibartolo, who added that it takes six people to move each painting.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was a Soudersburg resident who sold paintings from his shop on Route 30 near Paradise. He took lessons from local painters as far east as Philadelphia, and he worked in watercolors and pastels, as well as oils. He was known for his murals, including one of Christ that is still hanging in the Akron United Zion Church.

The three murals stored in the ULTWMA building were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to hang in the ULTWMA building, then called the Leola Community Building. While the paintings depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County, they are also historical, representing a chronological sequence of the area from the 1700s to beyond the 1950s. The winter scene,

which is set in the 1700s, includes a red barn and a covered bridge all decorated in a layer of white. The summer scene, which harkens to the 1800s, depicts a steam train, a one-room schoolhouse, and a swimming hole. Autumn shows Lancaster County in 1953, with a glimpse into the future by featuring superhighways, a diesel train, and powered farm equipment.

Dibartolo said she and Heagy have delved into the story behind the pieces, noting they were painted in the living room of Denlinger’s ranch-style home in only a few weeks each. Each painting has a Bible verse on the frame. For instance, the winter scene quotes Matthew 5:5, which begins with “Blessed are the meek.” On the backs, Denlinger wrote his name, the year, and other information, including, “Theme … ‘How Dear Are the Scenes of My Childhood.’” Dibartolo has

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania was formally founded as a refuge in 1980 by Bill and Barbara Darlington. After laws governing the possession of exotic animals changed, the Wolf Sanctuary became inundated with more and more rescue requests.

studied the paintings, and she pointed out Denlinger’s thumbprints in the smoke of the steam engine and the fact that in each one someone is waving to the viewer. She also noted the impressionist technique Denlinger used that makes the paintings clearer from a distance than they are up close. Movie Filmed In Lancaster County

On Dec. 1, 2022, Sight & Sound Films released “I Heard the Bells,” a feature-length film that marked the beginning of the company’s foray into the world of movie production. The film, which follows the story of famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was shot almost entirely in Lancaster County and was shown in theaters across the country.

Sight & Sound Theatres, the parent company of Sight & Sound Films, is known in the area for the many stage productions that it offers throughout the year, and it hopes to continue its expedition into film with more movie productions. “We are excited to take our storytelling beyond the stage,” said Katie Miller of Sight & Sound Theatres.

Pathways Hybrid Homeschool in East Earl will launch a pilot program for kindergarten through grade two learners and their parents and teachers. The Pathways educational offerings for the coming 2023-24 school year will be expanded to include a new Kindergarten Through SecondGrade Mentoring Program.

The initiative will be held one afternoon per week and will follow the Pathways philosophy. This program has been underwritten with a grant from Pathways’ partner, the Shady Maple Foundation.

The weekly class will give young students opportunities to learn and be introduced to cooperative group learning skills and behavior. Activities will include open-air education, nature exploration, science, living history, art, music, drama, literature, and all curriculum areas that promote a love for the outdoors, community service, and Christ. The program will also include a bi-weekly mentoring and support workshop for parents.

at several locations in Lancaster County and near Sight & Sound Theatres, including downtown Strasburg, the Strasburg Rail Road, Landis Valley Museum and Hope Episcopal Church in Manheim. “We live in such a rich land, both historically and visually,” said Josh Muffley, production manager for the film. “We felt that we had a lot of resources at our disposal right in our backyard, which granted us the ability to accu-

rately re-create things from the time period.”

The film was also shot at a handful of locations outside of the county, the farthest away being the Longfellow Museum in Boston. Many scenes were filmed in Gettysburg at a farmhouse owned by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. The film takes place in the mid-19th century and depicts events from the American Civil War. The ability to use existing locations that

were historically preserved and accurate for the time period saved Sight & Sound the time and money that would have been used to construct the sets. Although most of the scenes could utilize these locations, the production team built a set for the church that is featured in the beginning and end of the film. “It was such a specific and pivotal part of the film that we knew we wanted to take the time to build it early on,” said Muffley.

The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold a general membership meeting and luncheon on Thursday, March 2, at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with the meal and meeting to follow. The speaker will be Brian Roche, a coanchor for WGAL News 8 at

5 p.m. on weekdays and the 8 On Your Side consumer investigative reporter.

All current and past military officers are invited. There is a fee for the meal. Reservations are required by Wednesday, Feb. 22, by contacting Bill Zeird at 717-6260232 or rgerzsr@gmail.com. Visit www.moaalancaster chapt.org for additional information.

PV Clinches Second Place in Section 4

Shania Stoltzfus and Janae Peterson helped lead Pequea Valley to a 44-30 victory over Annville-Cleona on the road Monday night, February 6. With the win, the Pequea girls’ basketball team secured second place in Section Four, thus earning a spot in the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs.

The Braves raised their record to 20-2 (10-2 league) while the Dutchmen fell to 14-7 and 7-4.

“We knew going into this game that it would be a tough test,” Jason McDonald, the Pequea Valley head coach, said. “There was a playoff atmosphere with a great crowd.”

Stoltzfus scored 12 points and Peterson put up 10. Coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Braves outscored the Dutchmen 16-9 in the third quarter. The Braves’ defense then held Annville to five points in the final period.

“Shania Stoltzfus and Sarah Arment played great defense and our team defense was great overall,” McDonald added. “Shania also hit some big shots for us.”

Katie Stoltzfus and Breanne Beiler each scored seven for the Braves. Ava Hoover led the Dutchmen with 13 points.

“Katie Stoltzfus sealed the game with a three-pointer and went 4-for-4 from the foul line down the stretch,” McDonald said. “This was an important

win for keeping the number three seed in districts and clinching a league playoff spot.”

Pequea Valley was coming off another one of its dominant wins from the previous Friday. In a Section Four game at home, the PV Braves defeated the visiting Octorara Braves 46-6.

Nine of Patterson’s gamehigh 11 points came from three-point range. Jana Cotxa-Riubrugent scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds. Brooke Graham scored six.

“This was a good game for senior night,” said McDonald. “Our team shared the ball extremely well. We played with energy throughout the night.”

Patterson also pulled down four rebounds while Arment led the team in that category with six. Garment and Morgan Graham each had three steals.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

The Pequea Valley boys’ basketball team put together two great games to close out the 2022-23 season. The Braves downed Upper Dauphin in a non-league home game on Monday night, February 6. Two nights later, they closed out the season by defeating Section Four rival Annville-Cleona 44-43.

With the victory over Annville-Cleona, the Braves finished the year 5-17 earning their first league victory against seven previous defeats.

Pequea went on a 16-6 run in the third quarter and managed to hold the Dutchmen off as the dam was close to bursting in the final stanza.

Joerick Irizarry led everyone in scoring with 15. Braves teammate Jackson Neff poured in 11, hitting a pair of treys. Luke Rogers added nine points.

Sam Slabach led the Dutchmen with 14 points.

In the Upper Dauphin contest, the two teams were tied 20-20 at halftime. The Braves gained command with a 25point third quarter en route to the 57-42 win.

Neff sparked the offense with a 25-point night, including five three-point buckets. Irizarry (15 pts) and Cam Beiler, who scored nine, provided more offensive support. Rogers finished with eight points.

Four days prior to the Upper Dauphin game, the Braves were in another contest where the score was tied at halftime and one side played a dominant third stanza. This time, however, it was Columbia that took charge, outscoring the PV side 22-9 in the Groundhog Day battle at Kinzers. The Crimson Tide went on to win 72-50. The teams were tied at 31-31 heading into the second half.

Irizarry paced Pequea with 18 points on the night while Neff notched 11 points, including six points off three-pointers. Columbia’s Jordan Poole led all scorers with 22 points.

“I Heard The Bells”

The talent for the film consisted primarily of local actors, many of whom are currently performers and employees at Sight & Sound Theatres. Sight & Sound Films also partnered with a few living history groups to find actors, and performers came to Lancaster

from as far as Virginia, New York and New Hampshire. For the primary speaking and second-tier roles, auditions were held at Sight & Sound Theatres early in production.

The film relays a message of hope in dark times, as it follows Longfellow’s struggle

with grief and loss amidst a civil war. “The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. People really feel like they can relate to or are inspired by the message of the film,” said Muffley. “I Heard The Bells” was shown at around 1,200 theaters nationwide.

Film Screening, Discussion Planned

The Arts at Millersville University’s On Screen/In Person Film Series, in partnership with the MU Disability Film Series, will present “I Didn’t See You There” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will feature a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., a screening of the

90-minute film at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-andanswer session with filmmaker Reid Davenport.

In “I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport shows how he sees the world, from either his wheelchair or his two feet, without having to be seen himself. The unexpected arrival of a circus tent outside his apartment in Oakland, Calif., leads him to consider the history and legacy of P.T. Barnum’s Freak Show.

“I Didn’t See You There,” Davenport’s first feature film, won the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the McBaine Bay Area Documentary Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. It was scheduled to have a national

broadcast on POV in January.

Panelists in the community discussion will include Jaclyn Nagle, executive director of the Disability Empowerment Center; Blue Guckert, a Millersville University (MU) student and president of MUADAPT; Jessica Hughes, assistant professor of communication and disability studies at MU; and Marco Di Giulio, associate professor of Hebrew language and literature at Franklin & Marshall College.

The event is free and open to the public. To obtain tickets, call the box office at 717-871-7600, visit www.ArtsMU.com or visit the box office at the Ware Center or the Student Memorial Center on the MU campus. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.

Women’s Garden Club Will Meet

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. During the meeting, Master Gardener Eudora Roseman will present “Local Ephemeral Plants,” a program on the many early spring, short-lived bloomers and where in nature they can be found. She will also share information on purchasing plants such as trillium and blood root. Guests are welcome to attend for a nominal donation.

New Program Aims To Reduce Food Waste

Lancaster Central Market, 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, has launched the Kathleen L. Peck After Market program to reduce food waste, improve community health, and honor the memory of Peck. Designed to ensure nutritious food ends up on local tables, not in landfills, market standholders offer free goods that will expire before the next market day.

After Market is open to the public and operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Shoppers are asked to browse the tables in a single-file line and take only three to five items at first. Shoppers may return to the end of the line as often as they wish. After Market shoppers

should bring their own bags, as none will be provided.

Before the pandemic, the Central Market Trust partnered with local nonprofits to pick up food donations directly from the market house. Due to staff constraints and varying donation amounts, Trust staff members sought other ways to reduce waste and bridge the gap to ensure that food flowing into the Central Market makes it onto kitchen tables.

The family of Peck helped launch After Market in her memory after she passed away suddenly in 2022. Mike Peck, Kathy’s husband, noted that his family has bought much of its food from Central Market.
