Singing, Dancing, and Flying!

WhenNathan Bankert chose

“The Wizard of Oz” as the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) spring musical, he knew he would be directing student actors in an “energetic performance filled with quirky animated characters that would appeal to the whole family.” He also knew that he wanted some of the characters to fly, and he turned to ZFX Flying Effects, the system that helped him get Mary Poppins off the ground in 2018.

“The Wizard of Oz” will be presented at PVHS, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 4, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

The well-known tale of “The Wizard of Oz” begins in Kansas and follows a young farm girl, Dorothy Gale, played by Ruthie LaCorte, who dreams of a better place for herself and her dog, Toto. Before she can run away, a tornado hits

the farm and Dorothy sustains a bump on the head, resulting in her being transported “beyond the rainbow” to a land where people from her Kansas life become magical characters. Dorothy meets Glinda the Good Witch, played by Olivia Ross and Kianna Winey. Accompanied by the Scarecrow, played by Nicholas Ammon; the Tinman, played by Peter Brumbach; and the Cowardly Lion, played by Jarred Knepp, Dorothy and Toto follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Land of Oz, where they contend with the Wicked Witch of the West, played by Naomi Brumbach, and meet the Wizard of Oz, played by Sean Ammon.

Several members of the cast, including Ruthie, Nicholas, and Olivia, noted that they grew up watching the movie and hoping to play specific characters. “Tackling a show as iconic as ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a challenge because there’s expectation,” pointed out Kianna. “Everyone knows the story.”

Launching a Student Author

In the spring of 2022, when Stephen Kozan, author and founder of ReadyAimWrite Kids, visited Salisbury Elementary School, he gave an assembly on the writing process and talked about persevering toward goals.

As a child, the Harrisburg resident was told it was not realistic to pursue becoming a writer, so when Kozan became one, he started a publishing company to help students become authors.

Kozan brought artist Jain Cable along to help explain the illustration process.

During the assembly at Salisbury, Kozan gave the students an opportunity to do some creative writing. “(Kozan) asked them to do something original,” explained Kayley Gates, one of the teachers who helped bring Kozan to the school. “He was looking for a story summary.”

The story summary that most interested Kozan that day was written by Evan Johnston, who outlined the adventures of a worm who was tasked with helping a president to arrive safely in Worm Mania.

“There were Crants in the way,” said Johnston of the villainous agency made up of crows and ants that See Salisbury Elementary pg 7

“Hello, Dolly!”

According to Alicia Burton, director of “Hello, Dolly!” at Cavod Theatre, the show is about finding joy in each moment. Musical director Amy Rau concurred, pointing out that Dolly is going through a difficult time, but that she is stepping out in faith. “Even in the hardest things we go through, you’ve got to find the bright side,” she said.

“Hello Dolly!” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. The

show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 26 and March 5.

“Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Erin Wright. The musical follows her to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Eliza Moran, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Alex Weaver, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Richard Weaver, with See Cavod pg 6

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

To Save a Life

When Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Chad Roberts gave a presentation about Project Lifesaver at the East Lampeter Police Department near the end of 2022, an attendee asked if he might visit Garden Spot Village (GSV) to share information about the device that helps locate people with cognitive impairment who are prone to wander. Roberts, who is willing to discuss the benefits of Project Lifesaver with area groups, quickly set up a meeting with GSV staff.

The result is a presentation to be given by Roberts on Thursday, March 2, at 3 p.m. in the chapel at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “I recommend that any family members with loved ones who wander due to cognitive issues, (such as) dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, or traumatic brain injuries, (attend),” Roberts said.

Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a

designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. Should a participant go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department, and police officers pick up the frequency to locate that specific transmitter. The equipment utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Use of the system minimizes time and resources needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes.

In fact, Roberts reported that missing area residents have been found quickly when the device is employed. “In the past year or so, Lancaster County has had a few Project Lifesaver clients wander off, and (they) were located within approximately 30 minutes of (loved ones) calling police,” said Roberts, who pointed to a Lancaster city incident and one in Manheim Borough. “Both individuals were returned to their loved ones

Not Easily Broken

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture.

The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”

“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker,

safe and unharmed thanks to Project Lifesaver and the responding officers,” he said.

In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization. In 2008, Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched from that location.

Troop J began participating with Project Lifesaver a few

years ago. “(We) are proud to have this as a tool to aid in locating people that wander,” said Roberts.

Readers who are interested in learning more about Project Lifesaver may visit https://sites.google.com/view /pilotcluboflancaster/home /project-lifesaver or contact Pilot Club of Lancaster members Kelly Osborne at kosborne946@yahoo.com or Cathy Cieslinski at cathyc1981@comcast.net.

events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.

The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean

Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.

Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.” Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God.

“In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in

education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy.

“As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.

Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has

Minnie Fay, played by Melina Nicole Stratigos. Dolly also solves romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde Kemper, played by Jada Correll, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Lincoln Everett. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.

“‘Hello, Dolly!’ is a spectacular show,” said Burton, who noted Cavod Theatre was in a good position to stage the dance-heavy musical because Cavod Performing Arts trains dancers. “We have been able to utilize their strengths,” she said. Burton noted that large numbers including “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and “Hello, Dolly!” call for

families and townspeople in the ensemble. Both Amy Rau and Burton said they were blessed to see lots of teens and children at auditions.

Amy said that the songs themselves are joyful and memorable. “You cannot listen to ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’ without smiling earto-ear,” she said. “The music is so much fun.”

“You leave singing these songs,” added Burton, who is also enjoying working with the cast members practicing the Broadway classic. “The seasoned leads are thrilled to have the opportunity to play these iconic roles, and we are getting to teach the younger ones about this historic show.”

Tickets, which are discounted for students, may be purchased at ww.cavod.org, by emailing info@cavod.org, or by calling 717-354-3355.

During American Heart Month, February, the American Heart Association (AHA) is urging at least one person in every household across central Pennsylvania to learn hands-only CPR.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, make sure the scene is safe, then call 911 immediately and ask someone to get an AED, if available. Next,

place one hand on top of the other and push hard and fast in the center of the victim’s chest at a rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute, until the AED or emergency services arrive.

Performing chest compressions to the beat of a familiar song is a good way to ensure they are done at the correct rate. Songs at the required tempo include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. More songs are available on the American Heart Association’s “Don’t Drop the Beat” Spotify playlist.

Anyone can learn handsonly CPR from a 60-second video available at www.heart.org/handsonlycpr.

Penn State Posts Live Webinar

Penn State Extension will offer a live webinar titled “Finding Solutions to TreeSidewalk Conflicts” on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The webinar will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Removing large, healthy trees when sidewalks are lifted is not always the solution that provides the community with the most benefits. Tree and stump removals are expensive, as is sidewalk repair. During the webinar, participants will learn techniques to safely repair and retrofit sidewalks without removing trees, which provide communities with shade, stormwater reduction, energy conservation, and other benefits.

The webinar is designed for public tree, landscape, and environmental board members; municipal managers,

Salisbury Elementary

frompg 1

foresters, and arborists; and others interested in urban and community forestry. Participants will see the impacts that many sidewalk repair measures have on trees, learn to weigh the benefits and costs that trees bring to hardscapes, and find ways to resolve tree/hardscape conflicts with materials and space management. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. There is no fee for general attendance. There is a cost for a certificate of attendance and for Society of American Foresters CFE credits.

For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Finding Solutions to Tree-Sidewalk Conflicts.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

sought to interrupt the worm on his mission. Over the summer, Johnston filled in the details of his outline, corresponding electronically with Kozan to develop the 29-page chapter book titled “The Secret Mission of Billy Joe.” Johnston smiled when he discussed receiving copies of the book at his home just before Christmas.

To celebrate Johnston’s work being published, a launch party is planned at the school on Wednesday, March 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. That same week is book fair week at the school, and Kozan will speak to students. Johnston will also share his book with the younger grades, possibly through a video recording. Pequea Valley School District (PVSD)

has purchased copies of Johnston’s books for sixthgrade students and for each district library as well. Johnston will be recognized for his accomplishment at the March PVSD board meeting.

Although Johnston noted that being chosen to write a book was fun, he is not completely comfortable with his newfound fame. “He likes to stay out of the spotlight,” said Gates. Braves Battle Undefeated Cedars in L-L Playoffs

The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team entered the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs as the number two seed out of Section Four.

The Braves’ misfortune with that setup was having to face the Section One champion Lebanon Cedars, who breezed through the regular season unbeaten.

The Braves had difficulty making their shots early on, according to head coach Jason McDonald, thus having to fight back from an early deficit.

“Lebanon started off on a 100 run before we got on the board,” McDonald said of the playoff game at Lebanon on Saturday afternoon, February 11. “Unfortunately, our shots did not fall. We had four shots go in and out in the first half and two in the second half.”

Despite out-shooting the Braves in the first quarter, Lebanon only led by six points at halftime. Thanks to a 24-12 run in the third quarter, the Cedars stayed unbeaten as they topped Pequea 63-42.

Kailah Correa (20 pts) and Aaliyah Ferrer (13 pts) each made three three-point baskets for Lebanon. Zariyah Whigham scored 11 for the Cedars.

“Lebanon’s X-factor rebounded the ball in the third quarter and had nine of her 11 points,”

McDonald said of Whigham.

“She was the spark plug for Lebanon.

“Other than a three- or fourminute stretch in the third quarter, we played them very well,” added McDonald. “The kids left everything on the floor. I’m proud of this group and the effort they play with every game.”

The group’s effort included an 11-point night by Katie Stoltzfus and 10 for Janae Patterson, who also collected four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Shania Stoltzfus poured in nine points to go with three rebounds. She also registered one block.

Bre Beiler and Sarah Arment (4 pts) tied for the Braves’ team lead in rebounds with six each. Peyton Henshaw grabbed two rebounds and scored four points.

The Braves’ quest for the L-L League trophy may have ended in this playoff loss, but Pequea Valley goes into the District Three Class 3A playoffs as the third seeded team.

“We now have to focus on our next game and our goal of going to the district semifinals so we can qualify for states,” said McDonald.

SWIMMING

Aidan Wanner and Ethan Wanner competed in the L-L League Swimming Championships on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11, at Wilson’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Ethan Wanner had a seventh-

place finish, registering a time of 1:02.57 to earn a medal. He also claimed 12th place in the 500 freestyle at a 5:15.81 clip.

Aidan Wanner also had a 12thplace finish, swimming the 100 butterfly at 58.69 seconds. He claimed 15th place (59.28) in the 100 backstroke.

Forest Farming Program Planned

Penn State Extension will livestream a program in the Forest Farming Series on Thursday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. via Zoom. Forest farming is the production of non-timber forest products in forests to produce edible and medicinal crops for per-

sonal use and income.

Titled “Ramps/Wild Leeks,” the upcoming program will provide information on the identification, biology, ecology, uses, and importance of the edible plant Allium tricoccum, also known as the ramp or wild leek. Viewers will also learn about wild population stewardship and forest farming approaches, as well as research updates and educational opportunities. The webinar is designed for forest landowners, recreational and commercial foragers, foraged plant consumers, natural resource agency personnel, foresters, land managers, and gardeners. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required to receive the webinar link. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Forest Farming Series: Ramps/Wild Leeks.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

In a room at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown, a group of boys are bonding. They’re learning the importance of friendship, the significance of ceremony and the benefits of community service. They’re all members of DeMolay Elizabethtown, a chapter of DeMolay International.

The group is open to boys ages 12 to 21, and the chapter meets on the first and third Sundays of the month. “I like doing this because it’s a brotherhood opportunity for young men to get together for service, fun events and to support charities,” said Kenton Green, who is the master councilor for the chapter. As Kenton explained, one boy is chosen by his peers for this leadership role and serves a six-month term. He runs the meetings, helped by the rest of the council, which includes Todd Schwartz Jr. as senior councilor and Rusty Armstrong as junior councilor. During the meetings, the boys are guided by a roster of advisers, including Gary Schwartz, Todd’s grandfather; Dave Berry; and Jesse Spence.

“The major charity we support is Children’s Dyslexia Centers,” said Kenton, a 15year-old who attends Solanco High School. At a recent meeting, a group of boys worked on plans for Dodgeball for Dyslexia, a tournament that will be held on Saturday, May 13. Members of DeMolay have also volunteered at the Taste of Western Lancaster County at Elizabethtown Public Library, the Community Cupboard food bank and the Elizabethtown Fair. Upcoming fun outings for the group include bowling, a weekend cabin trip and a Barnstormers baseball game.

As Gary explained, DeMolay began in 1919 in Kansas City, Mo. The first chapter started in Pennsylvania in 1923. The organization is named for Jacques DeMolay, the last grand master of the Knights Templar, and it was started by Frank S. Land. Land and other organizers created a book that each chapter uses as the structure for meetings, and all DeMolay chapters emphasize seven core values: filial love, reverence, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanness and patriotism. Meetings feature opening and closing ceremonies, business items such as bills and budgeting and discussion of upcoming events.

“I am in this club for the privilege of service,” said Kenton’s brother, Holden, who is 18. “DeMolay offers a prime opportunity to do that. This is a learning opportunity to serve, to practice and improve your public speaking and to grow in your leadership skills. It’s also fun to hang around other like-minded people your age.”

For Todd, the organization has provided not just an opportunity to have fun, but also a time for personal growth. “DeMolay helped me open up more,” said Todd, 19.

“When I first joined, I was very shy and quiet, and I can say that through DeMolay, I have changed very much.”

Rusty, a 15-year-old Solanco student, joined DeMolay at Kenton’s urging. “I would encourage anyone who is interested to learn more,” he said. “You’ll learn so much

from this group, you’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll make a lot of friends.”
