Introducing interns to education

When the Pequea Valley School District First Choice program held a career fair on Feb. 8, Jody Bradley, assistant principal at Paradise Elementary School, Paradise, manned a table to tell attendees considering the field of education about the school’s internship program. The program was the brainchild of First Choice Career coordinator Jared Erb, and the first four Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) interns started working with educators at the elementary school in the fall of 2023.

Assistant superintendent Rich Eby summed up the purpose of the program, saying, “Creating an opportunity to foster and grow young people to want to enter the profession of being an educator is more important than ever due to the decreasing pool of potential candidates entering the field.” Eby noted, “It is critical

to have quality young people motivated to be in the profession to educate young learners and be integral role models.” Eby said the program offers benefits to students considering the field of education. “The intention of the Pequea Valley (student) internship is to allow juniors and seniors the opportunity to observe and learn

from veteran educators - to grow the profession one intern at a time.”

Bradley said that Erb and Paradise Elementary staff members talked about the idea over the summer and then kept the program very basic and open ended when it began in the fall. Organizers met with interested students to talk about how to

schedule internship time, and they created a pamphlet to show interns what would be expected of them during participation. Among those expectations were honoring individual students with regard to diversity and culture and supporting staff members by reinforcing expectations to help keep students focused and on a positive learning path. “Some of (the students) weren’t sure if this was going to be their first career path choice, but they wanted to try to find out,” shared Bradley. Interns have aided teachers and paraeducators in a variety of ways while gaining experience in a possible career choice. “We have one (student) who works in the afternoon with our art teacher,” said Bradley, who noted

that the student, who wants to be an art teacher, also works with the STEM teacher to bring creativity to that program. “We have a few (interns) who come

in the morning to work with kindergarten (students) in small groups,” stated Bradley, adding that those students also help cover lunch and recess duties. “They get

The concept of entrepreneurship is a study in risk and reward. SCORE can minimize risk and maximize reward.

Located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, SCORE LancasterLebanon is a local nonprofit that exists for the sole purpose of helping small businesses succeed. It fulfills its purpose through an interpersonal mentoring approach that is free to the entrepreneur.

“Many people who start a business have never run a business

before,” said Cathy Bonser, chairperson of the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of SCORE. “They have an idea that they’re passionate about. But they don’t know how to pursue the other aspects of the business. Entrepreneurs wear all the hats - human resources, marketing, accounting. It’s very demanding, and it asks them to do a lot. In life, we can be successful when we have a mentor, when we have support from the outside.”

Typically, entrepreneurs get connected with SCORE LancasterLebanon through its website or a

a taste of a few aspects of how the school day runs,” she said. Another intern boards buses each morning to teach students about the bus rewards program, discussing character traits and positive behavior. “We have some fun competitions to keep them motivated to be safe, respectful, and responsible on the bus,” said Bradley, who noted students are working toward earning the pieces to build an artificial snowman in the school lobby. Another student spends time with children in the PVTV news program that is part of the school’s Braves Club. “This intern wants to go into communications, and she is working with the sixth-grade communicators,” said Bradley, who added that the administration makes

efforts to give the interns the type of experience they seek. Recently, for example, administrators worked to pair a student who was interested in becoming an athletic director with both the nurse and the physical education teacher.

While the program provides interns with important experience, Bradley admitted that Paradise Elementary students benefit from working with high school juniors and seniors.

“(Elementary students) get to see these high school interns working here during the day, and the kids get really excited, and it builds relationships. They do look up to them.” Bradley noted that interns are coached about how to behave with students. “They can’t come in as a friend,” she noted. “They are a role model.”

OWA sets annual photography contest

Amateur photographers of all ages who have snapped scenic photos within the Octoraro Watershed are invited to participate in the Octoraro Watershed Association’s (OWA) third annual photography contest. The goal of the annual event is to share the beauty and wonder of the Octoraro Watershed with the community, since photos will be part of a traveling exhibit at various locations after the contest.

Last year, for the first time, contest organizers only accepted hard copies of photos rather than emailed versions. The same rule will apply this year. “We had about 35 entries. Last year was the first year we did not take virtual entries. As

a result, people had to print out their entry and bring it to us,” noted Chotty Sprenkle, contest organizer. “The virtual (option) was really convenient, but we need (people) to print out their photos so we can display them at the Quarryville, Atglen and Oxford libraries and for anyone else who wants to put up the pictures at their venue.”

“We are hoping for a robust (number) of entries this year,” she added.

It is not necessary to live in the Octoraro Watershed to participate in the contest. Entries will be judged in three age categories:

Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under. Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-

place winners in all categories. There will also be a Best of Show winner and a People’s Choice award.

All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden,

Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham. All

phone call. After answering questions, they are paired with experienced business professionals who serve as mentors, and the mentors and clients develop a professional relationship and a business plan.

“We want to contribute to the vibrancy of the communities we serve,” said Bonser. “The small businesses in Lancaster County serve an important purpose. Entrepreneurship is what makes for a strong business climate, especially here in Lancaster and Lebanon. We’re not a county driven by large industry; we’re a county driven by small business. We can help businesses plan for launch, growth and retirement. We can help businesses no matter where they are in their life cycle.”

There are more than

14,000 small businesses in Lancaster County, and SCORE has helped mentor entrepreneurs from all parts of the county. SCORE is made up of 75 volunteers, 66 of whom are active business mentors.

“They’re from across Lancaster County and also from Lebanon County,” said Bonser of the mentors. “It’s a wonderful group of colleagues who have chosen to give back to the community. These are people who are working, and some are recently retired. Our mentors work together. They reach out to each other to co-mentor to best meet our clients’ needs.”

The variety of businesses that SCORE assists is as diverse as the businesspeople who start them, everything from food trucks to publishing a book to therapists and yoga instructors, from farmers and painters to electricians, home contractors, landscapers and personal care. SCORE has the experience and resources to provide help.

“Entrepreneurship is unique, and it’s not for everyone,” said Bonser. “It’s hard work, and you can’t assume. It’s very

demanding. There are a lot of myths about what entrepreneurship is. You have to be a self-starter, and you’ve got to be resourceful. You’ve got to have good health, and you really need to have a supportive family. When entrepreneurs come to us, not all of them are ready to be in business or cut out to be in business.”

The Lancaster chapter of SCORE was started in 1965, and in 2015, the Lebanon area was added. Lancaster-Lebanon is one of 230 SCORE chapters across the country.

“The world has changed, but the core part of SCORE is the same,” said Bonser. “The way we mentor has changed, but we have access

to more resources. At the end of the day, what continues is that mentor role and the guided assistance to individuals.”

each performance.

Set in the western hills of North Carolina in the 1930s, “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” tells the tale of an Appalachian family that comes together for a reunion at its old home. Some members of the family travel from their new homes in other parts of the South, and others still reside at the mountainside home. After gathering under the same roof for the first time in many years, the relatives reminisce about days past and discuss the importance of family and faith. The musical will feature popular gospel songs such as “I’ll Fly Away” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The Promise Players last performed “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” nine years ago. This year, the musical will

be directed by Tim Strawser, who will also play the role of Uncle Brutus. Although this is the first year Strawser is directing, he has played various parts in the Promise Players’ previous iterations of the show. “I really enjoy acting and being somebody else, and I could do that with any theater group. But I love (the Promise Players’) community and the message of faith,” Strawser said. “The cast gets pretty close in the weeks leading up to the show.”

For every production, the

Promise Players chooses a local nonprofit to support in addition to the food bank in Quarryville. The group often highlights an organization that is connected to the play in some way; this year, the Promise Players decided to support Impact

Missions, as it is based in a rural part of the county that resembles the setting of the story.

week of the season, which will kick off on Monday, March 11.

Over the course of the 10-week spring season, GOTR teams will meet twice a week for a one-and-a-halfhour session. During each meeting, volunteer coaches will guide team members through a curriculum designed to help young girls to develop self-confidence and various social skills. The program will incorporate physical activities to

supplement every lesson and to prepare the girls for a 5K celebration at the end of the season. The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Franklin & Marshall College, 637 College Ave., Lancaster.

“‘Run’ is in the name, but the program is really about helping to lift up and empower girls,” said Jennifer West, executive director of GOTR Lancaster. “You can run, hop, roll, walk or push through our lessons

and the 5K.”

This year, GOTR will introduce a new curriculum titled “Hello Superstar.”

While the new material shares many of the same goals as GOTR’s previous lessons, it will place an additional focus on the importance of inclusion and celebrating diversity.

As part of the curriculum, each team will collaborate on a project that will positively impact the local community, and the girls will have an opportunity to choose where to direct the focus of the assignment. In the past, participants’ projects have supported animal rescues, teachers throughout their school district, local first responders and individuals who could use a care package.

“The girls learn that it’s important to think of others while taking care of yourself, and it’s really neat to see teams choose a project meaningful to them,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “They are not only making a difference in somebody’s life, but also in the community at large.”

GOTR Lancaster expects to have more than 1,200 girls and 90 teams participate in the spring season, which will require a minimum of 400 volunteer coaches. Coaches are not required to be runners

themselves, and students in high school are invited to sign up as volunteers. For more information, visit www.gotrlancaster.org.

photographs must be identified with their location within the watershed, whether it be the county, township or borough.

Photographs may be color or black and white. Photos will be entered and judged in four categories: Wildlife, which includes plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapes, which includes sites, scenery and historic buildings; Agriculture, which is farm-related activities and/or farm landscapes; and Trailcam, photographs captured on remote cameras.

Sprenkle explained that photos cannot be altered or created with computer programs. “The definition of ‘created’ is putting something in the photograph that was not present when you took the photograph,” she noted. “For instance, you cannot place a moon in the photograph if it was not present when you took the photograph. Programs that allow you to enhance a photo for color, clarity, exposure, etc., are acceptable.”

All photographs, which measure 8 by 11 inches or larger, must be mounted on foam or hard cardboard. “We will put Velcro on them and attach them to our display boards,” noted Sprenkle.

Entries will be accepted at the OWA office, located inside the West Fallowfield Township Building, 3095 Limestone Road, Suite 7, Cochranville. Photos may be dropped off on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6 and 7, between 6 and 8 p.m. each evening. Those who are unable to make those dates should contact Sprenkle for alternate arrangements. All photos must be received by March 7.

This year’s judge is Carey Bresler, Oxford Library director. All entries will be displayed, and the winners will be recognized at the OWA’s annual membership meeting on Thursday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville. Winning photographs will also be featured in the OWA newsletter and on the website.

For more information, contact Sprenkle at csp renkle9@gmail.com or 610-593-2808 or text 484-888-5416.

Documentary screening set at Ware Center

As part of its “On Screen/ In Person” series, The Arts at Millersville University will present a screening of the documentary “A Tree of Life” on Thursday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

“A Tree of Life” is a portrait of the survivors, families, and community of the 11 people killed in the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. This film sheds light on the collective trauma experienced by a tight-knit group and examines the hate-based rhetoric that surrounds many of the mass shootings of recent times.

A pre-show panel

discussion will begin at 6:15 p.m. It will feature Ismail Smith-Wade-El, a Pennsylvania state representative who lived and attended school in Pittsburgh; Rabbi Jack Paskoff of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim; Joyous Bethel of Millersville University’s School of Social Work; and Scott Lerner of Franklin & Marshall College’s Judaic Studies Department.

After the showing, there will be a question-and-answer session with director Trish Adlesic, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her short film “The ABCs of Book Banning.” Adlesic will

participate via Skype.

Tickets are free but required for entry. To reserve tickets, visit www .artsmu.com, stop by the

Ware Center or Room 103 in the Student Memorial Center on the campus of Millersville University, or call 717-871-7600.
