Rockin’ on in PV

“We have clubs on Wednesdays,” said Jim Ackerman, director at Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS), explaining how the rock band called Into the Mayhem, which is made up of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and PVIS students, got its start. “I called (the club) ‘Rock Band,’ and in the description I told (students), ‘It’s not the Rock Band video game.’” When eight students showed up to take part in September 2021, Ackerman discovered members of the group could sing, some could play instruments, and those who could not play were willing to learn.

At first, the group practiced once a week, but then the students wanted to play more often, so a lunchtime practice was added. By May of 2022, Into the Mayhem planned and held a concert with a group of PVHS students who had also formed a rock band.

Lanny Millette, donor director with The Potter’s House, remembers that pastor Jaime Santiago of Restart Training Center Ministries (RTCM) contacted him a few years ago about holidng a fundraiser together as a show of unity among recovery ministries in Lancaster County. “It’s bigger than one ministry,” said Millette, who noted that Slow Down Ministries, which helps provide vehicles for graduates of Christ-centered programs like Potter’s House and RTCM, has joined in the effort as well.

Toward spiritual health

Veronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry. Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.

Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental illness.”

“I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.” When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.

Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.

Women’s group extends welcome

The Worst Store in Springville

Submitted by Leona Baker for the Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Three Worst brothers immigrated to the Lancaster County area in 1760. One brother, Peter, and his wife, Barbara, moved to Springville in Salisbury Township. In 1864, Jacob, another member of the family, owned the first store in Springville, where the town’s first post office was set up.

In the 1800s, it was common practice to house a post office in the general store. Post office is somewhat of a misnomer, for the entire setup was a desk, a chair and an upright box partitioned into small cubicles. Postal patrons’ names were printed on the fronts of the cubicles. When mail was delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, it would be sorted by the postmaster, usually the store owner, and checked for proper postage; if postage was due, the recipient had to pay up before given his or her mail. After being sorted, it was placed in the patron’s cubicle for pickup the next time that person came to the store. For those who lived on outlying farms, that might be more than a month.

The Salisbury Township

1870 census lists Henry K. Worst, age 35, as a dry good merchant, running the Springville store. He and his wife, Susan, had three children. Ten years later, the now 45-year-old Henry was again listed as owner of the store, but his son-in-law, Clayton DeHaven, ran it. Clayton’s son Edward P. was expected to take over when he was old enough. However, tragedy occurred: Clayton died in 1898, leaving wife Catherine with four young children.

By the turn of the century, 64-year-old Henry was again running the store. His daughter Catherine, age 36, and her children were living with Henry and his wife. Henry’s other son, Henry L. Worst, age 30, appears to have taken over the operation of the Springville General Store. By 1910, he is listed on census records as a “retail merchant,

general store.”

Young Edward, Catherine’s son, seems to have spent much of his youth helping out in the store, and by the time he became proprietor, the store was a thriving business.

In Joan Lorenz’s book, “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,” Edward’s daughter Kitty Ann described the store as she knew it: “Entering the store, Ed’s office was located immediately to the left. Candy

When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed. She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children. “That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.

In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in. “God sent

Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and Jimenez responded positively to the treatment. “That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez stated. Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and

“Both bands did (a total of) 23 songs, and we played the last song together,” said Ackerman, who said songs by Nirvana, The Cranberries, Foo Fighters, and Green Day are in Into the Mayhem’s repertoire. “They like songs from the ‘90s,” he noted.

When the students moved from PVIS to PVHS in the fall of 2022, five band mem-

Local resident Fred Seldomridge remembers when the only telephone in Springville was at the store and people came to make calls. Incoming calls meant that a clerk would run to the recipient’s house to report the call.

When competition from big chain stores reduced his clientele, Ed sold the store in 1962. It closed soon after. The Worsts’ store had served the community for at least 100 years.

The Lanco Recovery Benefit Auction, which will include live music, food vendors, and a candy drop, will be held at 320 N. Ronks Road, Bird-inHand, on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on Aug 4 and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5.

Currently, organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of bands, food, marketing, and more, and for businesses and individuals to donate new items to be auctioned. Among the new items Frank Gaston of Slow Down Ministries has gathered to go up for bids are motorcycle parts and accessories, parts for off-road trucks, and a bicycle. “We would accept gift cards, vacations, or a dinner for six in a home,” said Millette.

To provide entertainment between live auction sets, Santiago has lined up family Gospel folk groups from Ohio that he said are wellknown in the Lancaster area. On Friday, groups include Dan and Amanda Esh, the Brandenberger Family, and Matt & Nimmie. The Brandenberger Family will play again on Saturday, along with Conrad Fisher, Broadway, and Endless Hallelujah Band. A candy drop is planned for late Saturday morning or early afternoon.

“One of our purposes is to let people know this is a unified effort of several minnistries wanting to help each other,” said Millette. “Right now, we are hoping individuals and businesses will stand with us as sponsors.” He added, “(We are looking for) people who find joy in helping those who can’t help themselves.” The Potter’s House provides a safe place for men and women to recover from addiction, experience Christ-centered discipleship, and embrace their Godgiven destiny. Braves handle Brandywine in District opener

The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team has secured a spot in the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs.

Playing on their home court in a District Three Class 3A quarterfinal match, the Braves befuddled Brandywine Heights

45-29 on Tuesday night, February 21. The victory assured the Braves (21-3) not only advancement to the district semifinals, but also a berth in the state playoffs. The top four teams from District Three 3A are eligible for states.

Pequea Valley entered districts as the number three

seed, hosting the sixth-ranked Bullets (15-9). Brandywine did come out with a strong opening period, holding a one-point edge over Pequea after eight minutes of play and led by the same slim margin at halftime - 18-17.

“We were down by one point at halftime, and we were getting everything we wanted offensively; we were just missing the shots,” Jason McDonald, the Braves’ head coach said. “At halftime we talked about getting the ball down low more often and applying more pressure, making sure we were in help defense. In the second half, we looked more comfortable.”

The big difference was in the fourth quarter of the game. The Pequea defense that has stymied opponents for 20 previous Braves victories came through, allowing the Bullets not one single basket.

Pequea Valley

outscored Brandywine Heights 15-2 in that final stanza, limiting the Bullets to two free throws.

Katie Stoltzfus fired from three-point range successfully, making four treys on the night for her team-leading 12 points. Janae Patterson added 11 points. She also had five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Breanne Beiler scored seven points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

“As we started getting the ball to Bre more in the second half, it helped open up easier shots and more driving angles that we took advantage of,” McDonald explained.

Sarah Arment, one of the PV seniors, had six rebounds and five assists. Morgan Graham contributed four points and two rebounds.

Addison Benner led the Bullets with 11 points.

“With the win, this senior class has the most wins for a career, and this will be their third trip to the district semifinals and to states in their careers,” McDonald noted.

Next up for the Braves, the district semifinals, is a familiar foe. Columbia handed Pequea two of their three regular season losses.

“Green Project” grants available

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group announced a request for proposals deadline of Friday, March 31, for its next round of “Green Project” grants. Any Lancaster County organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support those projects that are awarded grants.

The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational, or business associations that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects

relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort that, for example, focuses on a topic such as native plantings, pollinator plants, organic gardens, composting programs, hands-on learning, or stormwater management, rain gardens, and rain barrels.

To apply and learn more, visit www.lancastersierraclub.org/ grant-program. Access to the application is at the bottom of the page. After submission, an email will be returned to confirm that the proposal has been received. Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. After the announcement, a list of the awardees will be posted at www.lancastersierraclub.org. For additional information about the program, contact Jim Meenan at 717-475-0586 or jimsmeenan@gmail.com.
