Celebrating a journey of 30 years
BY ANN MEAD ASH“Iget chills thinking about the changes over the years,” said Carissa Pinkard, director of development with The Factory Ministries. Pinkard is working to plan the upcoming 30th anniversary celebration of the ministry, which began as a youth center in a former sewing factory. “Imagine all that has gone on the last 30 years, last 20, last 10,” Pinkard added.
The Factory Ministries’ 30th anniversary gala will be held on Tuesday, June 18, at Palm Court at the Willow Valley/Double Tree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. A VIP hour will be held at 5 p.m., and the event will begin at 6 p.m., with an 8 p.m. dessert and social hour. The celebration will feature a speaker, a silent auction, and a live appeal.
The Factory is a faith-based organization with a mission that reads in part, “Because of what Jesus has done for us, we believe that everyone’s journey matters.” The organization endeavors to offer services and programs to empower whole families and impact “real people with real problems.”
Adam Nagle, executive director of the ministry, will speak about the history of The Factory, with special focus on the last five years. “There will be people in attendance that don’t know much about The Factory, so we
will want to take this opportunity to really share not only where we have come from and how we’ve grown, but why we’re here and what we plan to do and keep doing,” said Pinkard.
A silent auction of about 200 items will feature signed sports memorabilia, items related to singer Taylor Swift and other celebrities, and exclusive travel experiences. Items donated by local businesses will also be included. Communications director Ellie Green noted that pearl is the 30th anniversary gem. “We are really excited about some pearl items we will have,” she stated. “There will be an authentic pearl in the silent auction.”
The live appeal will be presented by auctioneer Andy Keller. “We are a vessel for the community to care for one another, which is a huge honor,” noted Green. “This event is an opportunity to talk about what’s been going on and what we are hoping for in the future.” Green went on to say that the community leaders, business leaders, and donors in attendance will have the chance to invest in and be a part of the work of The Factory.
A safe place to learn and practice
Church holds English classes
BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Pamela Hasse, one of the English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers with the Zeltenreich Reformed Church ESL program, individuals working to learn English get “lots of listening practice in day-to-day life.” “(What) they need is a safe environment to practice English, (specifically) targeted skills such as grocery shopping, going to the doctor, or applying for a job,” she said.
Zeltenreich’s ESL program, which began with an intake session on Feb. 6 with classes beginning on Feb. 13, offers that time to students at the church, 752 Hollander Road, New Holland, each Tuesday from 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Pinkard noted that while recommended attire for the event is formal, organizers do not want anyone to feel excluded by that requirement. “We are not expecting men to wear tuxedoes or women long dresses,” she said. “(Wear) what would you wear to an evening wedding. It could be a tuxedo, a suit, or dress slacks and a tie. It’s a formal event, but (we want guests to) be comfortable.”
A number of table sponsorship packages are available.
Individual tickets may be purchased at www.thefactorymini stries.com by clicking on the “30th Gala Event” button or by calling 717-847-9982.
Currently, the program has two classes running with two teachers in each class until the middle of May. Classes will then begin again in September. The program’s ongoing enrollment allows students to begin at any time during the session. “We have students from Africa, South America, Mexico, and Eastern Europe,” said Pamela, who noted that the number of classes may grow as needed.
During the intake session, students were assessed on

comprehension and speaking skills and assigned to a class that corresponded to their level of accomplishment. A nursery program and a Bible club, taught by Jean Brown, are available for children who accompany their parents to class. For ESL students, a 45-minute lesson is taught, followed by a short coffee and snack break. After the break, there’s a Bible lesson and another ESL lesson. “The Bible lesson doubles as an ESL lesson with a different set of vocabulary words,” explained Pamela, who noted that students may continue to attend classes as long as they like. “The students start at basic and move up the ladder, and there are advanced classes where the discussion is digital etiquette. They can continue, and classes change with their abilities.”
In addition to Pamela, teachers, who undertook training in the fall of 2023, include Wilma Bender, who had a vision for this type of outreach for many years; Tim Brown; Julia Myer; Linda Cochran; and backup teachers Tim Bender, Tim
Martin, and Bill Hasse.
According to Pamela, the program began the session with about six students, and it has grown by one or two per week. Zeltenreich ESL representatives have been working with ForgeWorks director Allison Cuthie to provide classes for Garden Spot Village staff members. ForgeWorks is a service of Garden Spot Communities.
“I have been working on ESL options for our staff and ways to create meaningful relationships between residents and staff in their ESL journeys,” said Cuthie. “I am thrilled and grateful that Zeltenreich is providing a local program that we know we can recommend for our staff to achieve a greater level of practice.”
According to Pamela, students who are taking part in classes have shown courage and intelligence in choosing

to do so. “Sometimes the language barrier is deemed as being associated with less intelligence,” said Pamela, who noted that English is one of the hardest languages to learn. “It takes a long time to master (English),” she stated. “We are giving (students) the opportunity in a safe environment to learn targeted skills that are useful for them in their day-to-day lives and that will aid them in being better understood. That’s an important part of
what we’re doing.”
Pamela noted that the growth of classes has been comfortable for the teachers and students. “We are pleased to start slow and grow,” noted Pamela. “We want to serve our students well.”
Readers who are interested in taking part in classes may contact the church by emailing esl@ zeltenreich.org or calling 717-742-0240. Classes are free, but there is a cost for the class workbook.
The Feathered Sanctuary, located at 562 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand, is one of only a few exotic bird rescues in Pennsylvania. The relationship that exists between domesticated birds and people strikes at the heart of what the Feathered Sanctuary does.
“These birds are exotic,” said Sharon Shaub, the Feathered Sanctuary’s manager. “Anybody can have a dog. Not everyone can have a bird. Dogs like everybody. A bird has to like you and you have to know how to take care of a bird. If they do, they’ll love you.”
Feathered Sanctuary is currently home to 60 exotic birds - parakeets, parrots, cockatoos, macaws and cockatiels. Many of them have been surrendered to the Feathered Sanctuary, and most are waiting to be adopted by their forever homes.
“When the phone rings, we never know what kinds of friends we’re getting, where they’re from or what their circumstances are,” said Shaub. “Most of the time, people will call us and want to relinquish their birds. Sometimes owners go into the hospital and have no one to take care of them. Birds outlive their owners.
Birds live a long time.”
“We’re all volunteers and we just love the birds,” added Shaub. “It’s not their fault they don’t have a home. We’ve made them our pets and our responsibility.”
For visitors, the atmosphere at the Feathered Sanctuary can be a little
overwhelming at first.
Coming from all directions, there’s energy and sounds and sights that can only be compared to a menagerie.
“It’s just fun,” said Shaub of the rescue’s indoor environment.

Vintage Candy Shop, which had its original location in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, has moved to a much larger downtown spot near the square. The candy shop, which debuted two years ago at 602 St. Joseph St., closed that 600-square-foot location on Aug. 4, 2023, and moved to a 4,000-squarefoot space at 38 W. King St., where it also has a concession window, an ice cream counter and a vending cafe.
The shop reopened in late February, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends as the weather warms and for First Fridays. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening was scheduled for March 27 at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Lancaster City Alliance.
At the new King Street shop, the Vintage Candy Shop has expanded its selection of more than 500 different kinds of candies, including candy necklaces, wax bottles, jawbreakers, candy buttons, caramels, chocolates, gummies, fruit slices and mints and nougats. There are also the classic Barley Toys, Peanut Butter Puffs and Chocolate Straws by Plantation Candy Co., a Pennsylvania-based candy manufacturer, as well as several hundred individually wrapped novelties, including Mary Janes, Razzles, freeze-dried Space Candy, Wax Lips,
Fresh cotton candy is made on-site, and Taffy Lane offers mix-n-match salt water taffy that customers can select and weigh on an antique scale. The shop’s popular Stained Glass Art Cookie Kits will be available in both original sugar cookie and chocolate flavors in the shop. The kits make it easy and fun to create one-of-a kind edible works of art. Each kit includes individual mix packets, candies and cookie cutters.
The ice cream counter serves hand-dipped locally made Kreider Farms ice cream in a variety of flavors with toppings that include hot fudge and the classic chocolate shell. Hot drinks and slushies are served daily both inside and at the concession window, which also offers snacks, novelty candies, soft pretzels and muffins to walking customers.
The new shop also features a vending cafe offering a wide variety of meals, snacks, drinks and sandwiches. The cafe has seating at both rectangular and round tables, complete with vintage stools that are kid-friendly favorites. With self-serve microwave stations with an array of condiments, the vending cafe offers easy, quick affordable options for anyone on the go.

The Barn to host worship night, concert
The Barn at Paradise Station, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, has planned two upcoming events:
Worship Night in the Barn and a performance by New York singer/songwriter and piano player Peter Cincotti.
The community is
invited to experience local live worship in an intimate setting on Wednesday, April 10. Worship Nights in the Barn are interdenominational and are open to people of all faiths.
On April 10, the program will feature local worship leader Mackenzie Paige and teaching by Tony Snyder. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for free coffee and treats provided by Agape Cafe & Grill and Joe on the Go in the lower level. Worship, singing and teaching will begin at 7 p.m. upstairs. Song lyrics will be provided.
Worship Nights in the Barn are presented quarterly and are always free of charge.
Cincotti’s concert will
take place on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. Cincotti began his career at the age of 18, when he became the youngest artist ever to reach #1 on the Billboard jazz charts. Since then, he has been performing concerts around the globe in

their cages) and everyone gets to come at you. It’s fun watching them. It’s always interesting. They know what they’re saying. They’re not just imitating. They’re big and they’re beautiful.”
The Feathered Sanctuary is certainly a unique nonprofit. But like most nonprofits, it has a need for funds and volunteers.
“There are no other rescues around,” said Shaub. “I get calls from Connecticut and Baltimore, and the only (other) two I know of are in New Jersey. That’s why we stay open; we want to help (the birds). Birds are expensive. They have to have a good cage and good food. If you don’t feed them good food, you’re not going to have a healthy bird.”
Feathered Sanctuary was started by Pequea resident Lynne Rothweiler in the late 1990s. Before moving to its current location in December of 2023, the rescue experienced consistent growth and placed dozens of rescued birds in new homes.
“If you were interested in adopting a bird, you’d come here and look around,” said Shaub. “Hopefully one of the birds would pick you. You can’t make the birds like you. That’s their prerogative. We want them to know the person when they go home with them. There are some people birds just love. They’re smart.
They’re very smart.”
“Every animal should be rescued,” Shaub continued. “So many need homes now. There are too many animals out there. Exotic birds are good pets.”
