Second Annual 5K Set

Lis Martin, race director of the second Salisbury Elementary PTC (Parent Teacher Committee) 5K event, is happy with the results of the first 5K Run/Walk the organization hosted in 2022. “We did really well for the first one,” said Martin, who was inspired to suggest the event after participating in a 5K held by a nearby private school.

All things Pennsylvania

Community members are invited to discover or rediscover many of the events, museums, attractions and getaways that Pennsylvania has to offer at the fifth annual PA Family Travel Fair, to be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The event, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will also feature children’s activities, entertainment and food.

Those who visit the travel fair will also have opportunities to win prizes, including vacation packages. “The first 500 (attendees) will get a goodie bag to collect all of their swag from all of the vendors,” said Rachel Stebbins, marketing director at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., one of the

event organizers. “There is a lot of opportunity throughout the event to register for prizes. Almost all of the vendors are bringing prizes to give away.” The grand prize will be a family getaway provided by the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau.

The event focuses on providing information about family-friendly activities that are available throughout the entire state, including locally in Lancaster County and as far away as the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

“When you are talking to vendors, they are not trying to sell you things. They are just providing information,” Stebbins emphasized. “The visitor’s bureaus will represent a lot of the (sites) in their areas, but we also have (representatives of) specific attractions that are coming to talk specifically about their places.”

Entertainment will include a magic show at noon by Papa Tater Magical Family Entertainment and a live show at 2 p.m. by Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland. Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns and Chipper from Herr Foods Inc. will greet visitors, and the Kids Cookie Break radio show will be on-site doing live interviews. Visitors will also be able to meet friendly service dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS).

Food trucks will be available offering breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks and ice cream. New this year will be Joe on the GO Coffee Co., which will offer coffee, tea and breakfast selections.

Stebbins hopes that people will attend the event to learn about local attractions they may not even

be aware of. “It’s nice to have options with what you can do without having to travel really far,” she stated. “You can have a nice, long weekend or you can go out and do some of these activities and be home at night because it’s just that close. People often don’t realize what is right around them.”

Calvary Church is located at 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Admission to and parking at the PA Family Travel Fair are free. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, including a complete list of exhibitors, food trucks, activities and giveaways, visit www.pafamilytravel.com. The 2023 Salisbury Elementary PTC 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Kids Run will be held at Salisbury Elementary School, 422 School Lane, Gap, on Saturday, April 22. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m., and the Kids Run will begin at approximately 9 a.m. Registration and packet pickup on the day of the event will begin at 6:45 a.m. “We are stressing that it’s a run/walk,” said Martin, adding “We would like to see more walkers.”

The race will use the same course as last year, which features gently rolling hills on lightly traveled roads. The route will turn left from the school parking lot and travel School Lane, Cains Road, Route 897, and Buena Vista Road, before returning to the school. The course record is 19 minutes and 44 seconds. The Kids Run course will take the children out a half-mile before turning back to the school.

Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in eight age groups. All Kids Run participants will receive medals.

Organizers are seeking gold and silver sponsors for the event. Sponsorship packages include logos on race T-shirts and yard signs. Current sponsors include David Auto and Capital Heating and Air Conditioning, along with Doutrich Homes, Triple Painting, and Null’s Towing.

Gift cards have been donated by Twin Valley Coffee, Lake Tobias Wildlife Park, the Crayola Experience, the Turkey Hill Experience, the Reading Phillies, the Lancaster Science Factory, and Sight & Sound Theatres, but more are being sought. Each classroom at Salisbury has been assigned a theme to create baskets for the event.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

The 2022 run attracted more than 100 runners and raised about $4,000 for assemblies and field trips. “It’s a community event,” said organizer Nate Busnell. “We are hoping to get more area runners (to take part).”

The run/walk is being timed by Pretzel City Sports, and readers may register at www.pretzelcitysports.com /calendar_events.

The Pequea Valley softball team lost at Solanco on Monday, March 27, by a 14-3 score.

Isodore Graham’s first-inning triple helped set up the first Pequea Valley run. Madison Clark also laced a triple.

“We have a lot of talent, including speed,” head coach Doug High said. “We can hit. Hopefully, we will be able to compete.”

The Braves are coming off a season where they qualified for the L-L League playoffs.

Following their March 18 seasonopening win over Tulpehocken, which was a 9-0 non-league win, the Braves suffered a heartbreaking loss at Oley Valley three days later.

It was a loss where, according to High, the Braves gave up a few easy runs.

“We lost to them in the bottom of the seventh,” High explained. “That was a tough one.

“We earned all of our runs,” continued the coach. “In the sixth and seventh inning, they got some runs. Up until then, we gave away some runs - walks, hit batsmen and had some errors.”

The Braves committed two errors in the first inning to go along with two walks and two hit batsmen.

R093828

“So, that’s six base runners we gifted them,” High pointed out. “We were up 3-0. They ended up getting five runs out of it - with those extra base runners and only two weak hits.”

The pitching this year is being handled primarily by Madi Hassis and Tory Smoker.

“Madi pitches four or five innings and Tory throws two or three,” High said.

TENNIS

The Pequea boys’ tennis team evened its L-L League record at 1-1 with a 7-0 victory on Wednesday, March 29 at Lancaster Mennonite. The win also improved PV’s record to 2-1 overall.

In blanking the Blazers, the Braves got winning efforts from Hayden Winey, Cole McEvoy, Wade Stoltzfus and Cole Stoltzfus in both doubles and singles matches.

Wade and Cole Stoltzfus won the first double easily by an 8-2 score. McEvoy, who would cruise to an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at number one singles, paired up with Winey at number two doubles, winning 8-1.

Incidentally, Cole Stoltzfus (6-0, 6-2) and Wade Stoltzfus (6-0, 6-1) were straight set winners at third and fourth singles, respectively.

Baily Scott and Joel Peifer also posted a team point for Pequea, topping Luke Kaufman and Hecktor Martinez 8-4 at number three doubles.

Lancaster Country Day defeated the Braves 7-0 one week prior - Wednesday, March 22. The Cougars, who feature one of the league’s if not the district’s top stars, Nile Abadir, won the singles matches in straight sets thanks to Abadir and Michael Georgelis winning the first two.

Abadir and Freddie Bloom took the first doubles. Cole Stoltzfus and Winey gave a good effort at number two doubles, falling short 8-3. Winey also put up a fight in the second set of his number three singles match, finally yielding 6-0, 6-3.

BASEBALL

The baseball team opened its season with a 15-0 victory at home over Antietam in nonleague play. In the game shortened by the mercy rule, Peyton Temple needed to pitch only four innings to record the shutout. He struck out eight Mountaineers.

The Braves had only nine hits, including a single and a double by Logan Zynn, who drove in two runs and scored twice himself. Myles Furlong was sensational out of the number three spot in the lineup, going 3for-3 with a run and six RBI’s.

The Braves also took advantage of two Mountaineer errors, leading to four of the 15 runs being unearned.

Temple not only pitched the Braves to victory, but he also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly RBI.

Meanwhile Ezekiel Hershey was the poster child of run manufacturing. He drew two walks and was

also hit by a pitch. In the three times he reached base, he also stole two bases and scored three times.

Furlong, Jayden Stoltzfus and Miles Smith also had two stolen bases each.

That victory was on Monday, March 20. Two days later, the Braves lost to non-league opponent Hanover on the road. Though the Braves scored single runs in each of the first two frames, they lost the game 7-3.

Furlong had a hot bat once again, going 3-for-4 with one run batted in. Elijah Smucker also had two hits while Stoltzfus drove in two runs.

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Imagine Salisbury Township’s countryside when the first Europeans traveled west on the ancient Minqua Trail used by indigenous people for centuries. Cresting what is now called Gap Hill on that wooded trail, the pioneers could glimpse lush meadows in the valley, as well as forests that stretched for miles.

In 1681, Britain’s King Charles II granted William Penn the huge territory later known as Pennsylvania. History class taught us that he aimed for a “Peaceable Kingdom,” where the original inhabitants of the area and newly arrived Europeans could live together side by side. However, many of the new settlers found it hard to comply with Penn’s ideals. Their culture believed in land ownership, while to the Native Americans, the land belonged to God. Cultivating a particular plot for which they had set limits defined by a deed meant a lot to the English, German and Welsh settlers but contradicted indigenous beliefs.

By 1701, the situation was beginning to test the original treaty. Promises to the Native Americans were not being kept by settlers in this southcentral part of Pennsylvania. To reestablish good relations with the Susquehannocks, Penn himself traveled to meet the chiefs of that tribe to reaffirm the old Treaty of Peace. The area now known as Gap was a day’s horseback ride from Philadelphia. Gap was thus the obvious place for chiefs to meet Penn before escorting his party to their campgrounds on the Susquehanna River. Greetings and renewal of friendships would, of course, have been part of the meeting.

Imagine the area around what is now the Turkey Hill

convenience store, the Gap Post Office, the Gap Town Clock and McDonald’s still covered with trees and dotted with temporary Native American and English campfires. For whatever reason, Penn decided to sign the treaty right there that night. Perhaps he recognized the building animosity of the Susquehannock warriors over pioneer violations of the original treaty and wanted to ensure a safe journey onward. Whatever the reason, sheepskin copies of the treaty were opened on a flat rock for signatures to rededicate both sides to peaceful coexistence. That rock has been recognized for centuries as the one at the sharp bend of the south end of Chestnut Street in Gap. Today, a sign hangs at the location designating that significant event. Of course, a celebration accompanied this reaffirmation of intended good relations among the two civilizations. Feasting, dancing and general partying presumably lasted into the night. Before venturing farther with his Native escorts,

Rotary Rocks concert slated

The Rotary Club of New Holland will hold its sixth annual Rotary Rocks benefit concert on Saturday, April 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Lititz Shirt Factory, 5 Juniper Lane, Lititz. The event will feature live music by two bands, Shaky Covers and The Reed Brothers Band, both of which feature members of the Rotary Club.

Rotary Rocks, an evening of live music and fun, will support Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides recreational programs to individuals with disabilities. The event will be specifically aimed at raising scholarship funds to help financially challenged families to send children and young adults with disabilities to the Aaron’s Acres summer camp being held for its second year in New Holland.

Donations will be accepted at the door, and a silent auction will be held during the event. Donations can also be made online at http://rotary rocks2023.eventbrite.com.

Penn is reported to have rested in a nearby cave and had a breakfast of produce from the gardens that the Natives maintained near today’s Gap Post Office.

Local residents are encouraged to view the flat rock, which once felt the hand of William Penn in his attempt at joining two diverse cultures. Take a moment to imagine what Penn and those chiefs would think of our little corner of the world were they to join us today.
