Community welcome to check out Stoltzfus Christian Library
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Whatwas once a storage room at the Stoltzfus family farm in Gap has been transformed into a Christian library by Sam Stoltzfus, who established the library in 2015 as a way to honor God and share his love of reading with the community.
The Stoltzfus Christian Library, located at 5809 Limeville Road, Gap, offers more than 4,500 familyfriendly books covering topics such as Anabaptist history and biblical subjects, along with cookbooks and books about gardening, landscaping, home repair, nature, health and more.
Like with a public library, patrons are provided with a library card, which allows them to check out books from the library for a period of three weeks, with the option to renew the item for an additional three weeks. Books can be renewed in person, by voicemail or online.
Stoltzfus got the idea to create the library while recovering from serious injuries that occurred during a 2014 construction accident when he was pinned under a
3,000-pound excavator. “My first thought was that I was going to die. My second thought was, ‘Am I ready to die?’” he shared. “Suddenly there was peace that washed over me, and I felt God’s presence closer than ever before. I cried out, ‘God, help me,’ and right as I said that, the machine that was on my back counterbalanced and rolled back over on its side. If it would have stayed on me, I would not be here to tell the story.”
Stoltzfus had collapsed lungs and a broken femur, among other injuries. “That was a wakeup call in my life,” he said. “During my recovery time, I was thinking about what I could do (to honor God). I thought of a library. Growing up, I was a serious bookworm, and I just love reading.”
Stoltzfus and his family members remodeled the storage room, adding electricity, heating and air conditioning, paneling, flooring and bookshelves, which they purchased from a local woodworking shop. Stoltzfus also purchased a state-ofthe-art barcode and scanning system to allow people to check out their own books.

Celebrating a milestone with a movie
BY ANN MEAD ASH
The partnership between Aaron’s Acres and Penn Cinema goes back many years. Prior to the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, sensory-sensitive cinema events were held there monthly. Now, to celebrate Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary, the nonprofit has teamed up again with the movie theater located at 541 Airport Road, Lititz. The movie “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be shown on Thursday, April 27, at 5 and 6:30 p.m. All seats will be offered at the same price, and 100% of the proceeds will go to help support Aaron’s Acres’ programs.

Barking for life in Ephrata
BY ANN MEAD ASH
East Earl resident and member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay for Life team Sharon Groff, is a woman who believes in giving a project her all. Groff loves the idea of Bark for Life, an American Cancer Society Relay for Life event involving dogs and their owners, so she decided to get behind the concept and do her best to make it succeed.
The result is the first Ephrata-area Bark for Life, to be held at New Life Fellowship Church, 420 E. Fulton St., Ephrata, on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “It’s a dog-friendly event,” said Groff. “It’s a community
event.” No admission will be charged to attend Bark for Life.
Not only will dogs be welcome, but they also will have the opportunity to show off a little if they take part in the Strut Your Mutt parade scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m. “There will be judges and prizes in different categories,” said Groff, who noted that dressing one’s dog up is encouraged but not required.
Dogs who work to rescue humans will be featured in a Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) demonstration at 10:30 a.m. PACSAR’s highly trained and certified volunteers provide free search and rescue services using canines.

Fire company to offer Cadet Camp
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
Unit will give a demonstration.
Groff has also lined up community servants and apparatus to interest area residents of all ages. “The Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company will be on hand,” she noted. “The Ephrata Ambulance will hand out coloring books to kids, and there will be a police cruiser here. We are making it a complete community event.”
Lafayette Fire Company will present Cadet Camp 2023 from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 23, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 24. The hands-on, activity-based camp is open to children ages 8 to 14.
Local first responders will staff the camp and provide children with opportunities to learn about firefighting and emergency services. The camp will feature different stations and utilize varied locations, including the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center. A different slate of activities is offered each year.
During camp, each cadet will be issued personal protective equipment to assist in completing the skills stations safely, along with a camp uniform T-shirt. Food and hydration options will be readily available. At the conclusion of camp, families will be invited to see demonstrations of the skills stations and attend a small awards ceremony and a cookout.
Space is limited. There is a cost to attend, and scholarships are available. For more details and registration, visit www.lafayette fire.com/cadetcamp. For further details, contact cadetcamp@lafayettefire.com.
To raise funds for Relay for Life, a live auction featuring James “Max” Fishel as auctioneer, will be held at 1 p.m. Among the many donated items will be 100 themed baskets and gift certificates to local attractions. “Two of the biggest items are two Hall of Fame Philadelphia Phillies tickets and a ride-along stock car experience at Pocono Raceway,” said Groff.
Other organizations that will have a presence at the event include United Disability Services service dogs, Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), Ladies Lending Paws, Speranza Animal Rescue, Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, and Leo’s Helping Paws. Groff has also lined up about 30 vendors, mostly crafters with a few home businesses mixed in. Food items that will be for
when Ephrata’s first Bark for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life is held.
sale at the event include hot dogs sold by New Life Fellowship, breakfast sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, pretzel sandwiches, soft pretzels, baked goods, and cotton candy.
Groff noted that she is still looking for area businesses to donate items for the auction or sponsor the event. “If a business would like to sponsor a theme basket, they can contact me,” said Groff. Readers who would like to donate may call 717-354-2656 or email sgroff56@gmail.com. More information about the event may be found at www.relay forlife.org/barklancasterpa.

At first, the library was filled with books from the family’s personal library along with some purchased books. “We started out low-key. We started with 1,600 items. We were feeling out (if there was) a need in the community,” said Stoltzfus.
That question was soon answered when a library grand opening was held on March 14, 2015. “I was thinking we would have about 50 or so people show up,” said Stoltzfus. “On our grand opening, we had over 200 people. Literally, by the end of the day, the bookshelves were basically wiped out.”
Today, books are sorted and color-coded in 15 categories, including children’s and preschool Christian books, Bible/bedtime stories and history and geography. The library also features a reading area with a scenic view of the surrounding farmland. Patrons may also purchase snacks and beverages to enjoy while reading.
The Stoltzfus Christian Library is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 717-6721587 or visit www.stoltzfus christianlibrary.org.
The enabling trap
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Joel Jakubowski, men’s ministry director with The Potter’s House, is well acquainted with the many ways family members can unintentionally enable a loved one’s addiction. “Some ways are overt like giving money (to the addicted individual),” said Jakubowski. “Others are subtle, such as not asking (the addicted individual) to make a change in (his or her) life.”
Jakubowski will share his knowledge with those who

Handling greeting, ushering, and selling snacks at the theater that evening will be up to 20 members of Aaron’s Acres Angels, a new group of typically abled teenagers from throughout the county that formed during COVID-19 restrictions. “We first met online and we did a lot of Zoom calls,” recalled Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. Paskoff pointed out that the participants first raised funds for Aaron’s Acres with a virtual bingo. “The funds went to buy pull toys and special snacks for camp, and (Aaron’s Acres Angels) came to camp to present those
items. Paskoff said the Angels have visited Aaron’s Acres’ Saturday night school year program, and they have taken part in sensory-sensitive activities to experience limited gross motor skills, low vision, and other disabilities. “They are learning about people with different abilities,” said Paskoff, who added that the students are also involved in other activities such as fundraising to help them to learn to work together, effectively use leadership skills, compromise, and market an event.
Paskoff said the Angels grew out of the Aaron’s Acres Dream Makers group, which meets
each spring and fall and visits summer camp. The Dream Makers make a financial commitment and then choose from several Aaron’s Acres projects to fund. When Jenn Finkelstein, a Dream Maker, wanted her daughter to have a similar experience, the idea for Aaron’s Acres Angels was born.
Aaron’s Acres provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21 through a summer camp and school year programs. Readers who wish to purchase tickets to attend the celebratory movie event may do so at www.aaronsacres.org.

PV tennis moves to 7-1 with win over Crusaders
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Braves walked onto the tennis court with confidence. When their L-L League match with Lancaster Catholic had come to a close, they had improved their record to 7-1 (5-1 league). The Braves swept the doubles matches in a 6-1 victory on the road.
The familiar twosome of Wade Stoltzfus and Cole
Stoltzfus managed to save off John Martin and Steve Billis 8-5.
Hayden Winey and Cole McEvoy won 8-2 at number two doubles while Bailey Scott and Jackson Hershey posted an 8-4 victory.
Winey and Cole Stoltzfus would each win their singles matches in straight setsWiney 6-2 6-1 at number two singles and Stoltzfus 6-0, 6-0 at third singles. Joel Peifer
also earned a team point, posting 6-3, 6-3 victories at number one singles.
BASEBALL
The sport of baseball is played in the spring to the enjoyment of sports fans and families, not to mention players and coaches.
The sport of baseball is played on various levels - professional or amateur, high school or instructional leagues.
The sport of baseball is a strange one. As in other sports, it has the “any given day” factor.
The Pequea Valley Braves baseball team was coming off a game in which they had pounded Lancaster Mennonite six days earlier by a 13-5 score, banging out 10 hits (3 for extra bases).
The Braves hosted Lancaster-Lebanon League opponent Annville-Cleona on Tuesday, April 11. The game of baseball presented its mysterious twist where the same offense was held to four relatively harmless base hits as the Dutchmen
defeated the Braves 5-1. Jayden Stoltzfus scored the lone Pequea Valley run after slugging a double. He scored in the bottom of the first inning aided by an Annville error.
The Dutchmen came back and tied it in the fourth inning before adding three more runs in the sixth en route to the 5-1 win.
Trevor Vollmer, Peyton Temple and Myles Furlong each had a single for the
Braves. Noah Morcom had two hits and two runs batted in for Annville.
Furlong hurled six innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out two.
The Braves rallied for two runs in their final at bat on Wednesday, April 12, defeating Northern Lebanon 5-4 at Kinzers. The victory improved the Braves’ record to 6-3.
Freshman pitcher Logan
Zynn, who relieved Stephen Smucker in the seventh inning, was the recipient of the walk-off rally, thus earning the win. He allowed one unearned run in the top of the seventh, giving the Vikings a 4-3 short-lived lead.
Smucker, who helped his own cause with a 2-hit, 2 RBI day at the plate, went six innings, striking out six. Temple slugged a double on a 3-for-3 afternoon, also crossing the plate twice. Elijah Smucker went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
SOFTBALL
With a six-run third inning, the Northern Lebanon Vikings battled past the Braves in L-L League softball action on Wednesday, April 12. The visiting Braves had taken a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Maddy Clark had two of Pequea’s four base hits. Sarah Arment and freshman Izzy Graham each singled. Graham also walked twice and stole four bases, putting herself in scoring position. She crossed the plate twice on the day.
The Braves, who were coming off a 10-6 loss at AnnvilleCleona on Monday, April 10, fell to 3-3 on the year.
Graham, the impressive rookie, had two doubles and scored two runs in the A-C game. Olivia Clark, Victoria Smoker and Maddy Clark each drove in a run as did Carissa Mulder and senior Shania Smoker.

Some form of addiction affects nearly 70% of families.
“This is about enabling versus support and helping families to understand the difference,” said Jakubowski, who noted that family members may think actions they are taking are helping the individual to gain freedom from the addiction, when they are actually helping to keep them stuck.
“The biggest form of enabling is giving the addicted individual money and generally that is (portrayed) by the individual to be for something other than drugs,” said Jakubowski, who noted that inspiring giving in deceptive ways by “pulling on the heartstrings of sympathy” is common. “The parents fall into the trap of thinking they are helping by giving the money, but the money is going directly to support the addiction.”
Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga Church of the Brethren, said that the response to the seminars has been positive. He recently spoke to a member of the Plain community, who said that he and his family had been affected by the effort. “A father said he had attended one of the addiction workshops,” recalled Cassel. “(The father told me) ‘We got help for our son, and now he is healthy.’”
Jakubowski concurred that lives can be changed when families recognize the behavior pattern that is enabling and take appropriate action.
“The addicted person goes into a place of denial (because) they don’t want to believe they are (as deeply addicted) as they are,” he explained. “Families also go into denial. They keep trying to provide care in hopes that it will pull the person out of what feels like a bad season,
but it’s generally much deeper than an issue of behavior.”
Reservations are not necessary to attend the seminar. More information about The Potter’s House may be found at www.thepottershouse lancaster.com.
