To build hope
BY ANN MEAD ASH
OnApril 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.
Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.
Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.

Serving the nations
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“I grew up Amish in Strasburg,” said Lin Fisher, who noted that reaching out to places beyond that small community was always in her heart. “I wanted to go out to the nations … to be part of something bigger,” shared Fisher, who spent 10 years as a missionary working in a leper colony in India. On the return flight from India in 2015, she felt unsure about the future. “I thought, ‘What am I going to do now?’” said Fisher. “I felt the Lord give me the words ‘Do something.’ We can all do something.”
At first, Fisher felt directed to James 1:27, where Christians are instructed to care for widows and orphans, and she reached out to about four widows living in her Gordonville development. Eventually, the group included up to 50 widows meeting on occasion and taking “mystery” bus trips around the county.
General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-ofthe-art care here in Lancaster.”
County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.
Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient
cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”
Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”
The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.
More information about the clinic may be found at www.Clinicfor SpecialChildren.org.
She founded DOsomething Nations, focused on the mission to “Give. Feed. Clothe. Visit. Invite.” and in February of this year, Fisher learned of an earthquake that had occurred in the Middle East. She quickly contacted a friend from Petra Church in New Holland, where she attends. The friend, who lives in Indonesia, provided her with the name of a missionary in the area of the earthquake. She texted and heard back almost immediately from the missionary, Kurt Miller, who told her of a shed project that was underway to provide housing for families displaced by the earthquake. “They have built more than 30, and they have enough money to build until we get there (in midMay),” shared Fisher, who hopes to raise $56,000 to build another 20 sheds and fill them with needed supplies to house 40 families. Fisher and 11 others will travel to the location to help build sheds, organize children’s camps, and move supplies until mid-June. See DOsomething pg 4

said Fisher. She asks area residents to commit to praying for team members or to adopt a family by funding a shed. “Each shed costs $2,700, and (another) $300 will fill the shed with supplies,” said Fisher. “I would just love it if people would rally together and adopt a family.” Fisher added that when the team returns, she hopes to hold an event for those who adopted families.

Submitted by Leona Baker of the Historical Society of SalisburyTownship
Note: Some of the information here has been extracted from Joan Lorenz’s “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.”
It is Lorenz who, while gathering that history, also gathered together history-minded members of the community to form what became the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, which is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year.
Lorenz’s book stated, “Salisbury Township was created in 1729, however its geological history goes back to the time when the area was an inland sea just beginning to form the limestone trap, quartzite, granite, gneiss and shales that make up our rolling tableland between the Welsh Mountains and the Gap Hills.”
Imagine this southeastern region of Pennsylvania long ago as the seas receded. It began to change to a sub-tropical hot and humid climate during the Jurassic Age. The dinosaurs that had lumbered about North America during hotter, drier centuries changed, too. The huge bird-like coelurosaur adapted living in the hot, humid swamps of Pennsylvania. Modern discoveries have revealed that this creature had primitive feathers. In fact, this large early “bird” is considered to be the forefather of even the tiny house wren of today.
When Lorenz was researching her book, she was told about a petrified footprint that had lain in the spring of the Spring Garden Hotel. Years before, John Price from the North Museum, which is part of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, had examined that footprint and declared it was the imprint of an ostrichlike coelurosaur from the late Jurassic Era. Clara Hamilton of Spring Garden then donated the footprint to the museum for safekeeping.

Relics of the past
Plaster casts of a mammoth tooth (bottom photo) and a coelurosaur footprint (top photo) are on display at the Salisbury Township Building by the Salisbury Township Historical Society.
Relics
frompg 4
Hearing of this connection to the local distant past, Lorenz, accompanied by Melvin Robinson and John Oberholser, who was a Salisbury Township supervisor at the time, visited the North Museum to look at the footprint firsthand. They also saw the mammoth tooth originally found in White Horse by an unknown person while digging a ditch. This tooth has been identified as being from the Pleistocene Era, which included the last Ice Age, even earlier than the footprint.
The North Museum agreed to create plaster casts of these
two bits of the area’s ancient history. Today, the historical society displays these replicas in its glass case at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, for all visitors. And the North Museum, as part of its student STEM program, has a geology study kit that includes Salisbury Township’s mammoth molar.
As residents walk and drive throughout the township, think of the bones of the extinct creatures that still lie beneath their feet. Who will be the next to find a dinosaur bone or tooth?

Shirk’s Bike Shop 15th Annual Spring Sale!
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Pequea Valley softball team had notched a win via forfeit on Thursday, April 20, as scheduled opponent Columbia forfeited a game originally scheduled for the previous day.
The Braves stayed at home for their next LancasterLebanon League game, welcoming Lancaster Catholic Friday, April 21.
“Kenzie Musser had a great outing,” Doug High, the Braves’ head coach, said. “She had six strong innings.
“We were winning 2-1 and I sent her back out there for the seventh inning,” High
explained. “They led off with a single, then a one out single. The next kid hit a triple.”
The Crusaders came back to win 4-2.
“Offense has been pretty consistent,” High said. “It was until this game. We just didn’t get the clutch hit when we needed it.”
One example of that was how in the fourth inning the Braves only managed two runs from a bases-loaded situation.
Olivia Clark and Chavelle Fisher each drove in a run. Fisher was 2-for-3 in the game.
“She has been swinging a hot bat for us,” said High.
Izzy Graham went 3-for-4 as the Braves feasted on Lancaster Mennonite pitching on Monday in a 13-0 victory.
“Izzy has done a phenomenal job for us at shortstop,” High said.
Victoria Smoker pitched three innings of shutout ball in the 10-run rule shortened game, which ended after five. Smoker also had two of PV’s
hits. The Braves (6-5) scored all 13 of their runs in the first two innings.
Maddy Clark went 2-for-3
with a single, a triple and two runs batted in.
“Offensively, Maddy Clark has been a real powerhouse,” High said of the senior slugger.
As for the other starting senior named Clark, High remarked, “Olivia Clark has been really solid. She is our catcher.
“We lost Emily Ammon, who caught two years for us,” he added. “Liv Clark played third base for us but she had caught in the 14-under, so she understood she was going to be the catcher for us this year.”
BOYS TENNIS
The Braves played in a Lancaster-Lebanon League quarterfinal round match on Friday, April 21 at LampeterStrasburg in the league’s team championships. The Pioneers served up a 3-1 victory but fell to Cedar Crest in the semifinals on Monday.
In the first doubles, the Pequea pairing of Joel Peifer and Cole McEvoy won the opening set 6-3 but then lost two close ones, 6-4 and 10-7.
Also, Hayden Winey lost a close number two singles, 7-6 and 6-3. Wade Stoltzfus claimed the one Pequea point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number one singles.

The team championship trophy went to Lancaster Country Day on Tuesday. The Cougars topped Cedar Crest 3-1 in the title match.
In team play, the Braves finished the regular season 12-1 and were the secondplace team out of Section Three, entering the playoffs.
As the Braves look ahead to the L-L League Flight Tournament, head coach Barry Christ’s squad is working hard.
“We’re working hard for the singles and doubles tournament,” Christ said. “This team lost five seniors from last year and we only have seven players this season - three seniors and four sophomores. As a team they’ve trained hard and played consistently to be a success.”
BASEBALL
Having surrendered seven runs in the first inning, the Braves’ attempts to climb out of the deep hole were not successful in their 13-7 loss at Northern Lebanon on Wednesday, April 26.
Jared Eckenrode slugged a two-run homer and Xander McQuaide went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI’s to lead
the Vikings’ 12-hit attack.
The Braves (9-6, 6-4 league) did cut their 8-2 deficit to 8-6, scoring four times in the top of the fourth. But five runs by the Vikings over the next two frames put the game out of reach.
Myles Furlong went 2-for-5 with one run batted in. Jayden Stoltzfus drove in two runs for the Braves while sophomore Stephen Smucker came through with two hits, including a double, driving in three runs out of the number nine spot in the order. Smucker also scored two runs.
Dominick Burrell also had two hits and scored two runs while freshman Elijah Smucker (1-for-4) knocked in one run.
It has been feast or famine for the Braves’ lineup in the previous two games. On Friday, April 21, the Braves lost 9-0 at Lancaster Catholic. The following Monday, they returned home to take care of Lancaster Mennonite 10-1.
Freshman Logan Zynn got the victory in this game, striking out nine batters in five innings of work.
Furlong took apart the Blazers with a 3-for-3 day at
the plate. He stole four bases and scored two runs. With his three singles, he also drove in two.
Peyton Temple (2-for-4) doubled and drove in one.
Ezekiel Hershey went 2-for-3 with a run while Jayden Stoltzfus singled twice, stole
two bases, and scored twice. Elijah Smucker (3-for-4) belted a double.
Stephen Smucker provided consistency at the tail end of the lineup again. He went 2for-4 with two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring two.
Furlong wasn’t the only base runner swiping bags all day. Designated runner Trevor Vollmer stole three bases. Temple stole two bases while Burrell and Hershey each nabbed one.

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development held its 39th annual gala - its major fundraising event of the 2023 calendar year - with a theme of “Bourbon + Bowties” on March 11 at Brick Gables in Lititz. In addition to raising funds for the center, the event introduced the center’s 2023 Ambassador children. Each of these children has benefited from Schreiber’s therapy, recreation and/or educational programming. The Ambassadors and their families have agreed to share their stories and represent Schreiber at engagements throughout the year.
This year’s Ambassadors are Graeme from Lancaster, Malcolm from Lancaster, Lucas from Grantville, Kalvin from Elizabethtown, Katelyn from Elizabethtown, and Harper from Elizabethtown.
Graeme, 6, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 and needed to work on his fine and gross motor skills as well as speech and language. Graeme has graduated from the physical, speech-language and behavioral health therapy programs, and he continues to receive occupational therapy with Makenzie Skiles. Because of Schreiber, Graeme has learned to interact with his family, which includes older brother, Connor, and his peers. He identifies emotions in himself and recognizes and is able to empathize with emotions in others. He can write the alphabet and his name, and he is excelling in school.
Malcolm, 23, is an artist. His artworks have been featured in many shows and received numerous awards. Malcolm, who has autism, graduated from Schreiber therapy services several years ago. During his time at Schreiber, Malcolm received occupational therapy from Emily Beddow, who taught him many life skills, and Lisa Christoffel, who retired in June 2021 after over 40 years of service to Schreiber. Malcolm, who has an older sister,
Kiana, currently participates in Schreiber’s Club 625 events, especially the dances. Club 625 is a social group for teenagers and alumni of Schreiber.
Lucas, 4, has spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disorder that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. To help improve his posture, prevent joint stiffness and slow muscle weakness and atrophy, Lucas receives regular services at Schreiber. He recently stood on his own for the first time. Lucas also receives occupational therapy from Bianca Angstadt. As a result of occupational therapy, Lucas has been able to put on a T-shirt. He has also been working to grasp crayons and markers. Lucas also practiced improving his tactile sensory processing by getting his hands messy with shaving cream, paint, and glue. Lucas, who has 3 older siblings -
Nicole, Ryan and Chloe - currently attends Schreiber’s preschool program.
Kalvin, 13, has been a Schreiber client since the age of 2, when he was diagnosed with autism. He has received all four therapy servicesphysical, occupational, speech-language and behavioral health. Having recently
graduated from speech-language therapy with Jeremy Ewell, he can form clear and specific sounds in speech. In behavioral therapy with Missy Ressler, he is concentrating on managing his anxiety. Along with his younger sister, Katelyn, Kalvin wore the Duckie costume at the Rubber Duckie Race in 2022.

Katelyn, 10, has autism. Her brother, Kalvin, was already receiving services at Schreiber, so when her parents thought she needed services, they had her evaluated. While in preschool, Katelyn was found to have selective mutism; she whispered to her teacher, as she did not want others to hear her. For this, Katelyn has worked with several speech-language therapists, including Barb Miller, Karen Thomsen and Maddy Sova. She has also worked with occupational therapist Bernie Hershey. Currently, Katelyn receives speech-language therapy, working with Ashley Shirk. She also works with behavioral health therapist Missy Ressler on social skills in connection with her anxiety.
After college, Harper’s mom, Kirsten, worked for the Circle of Friends Academy at the Schreiber Center. When Harper was 6 months old and needed Early Intervention services, Kirsten called the Schreiber Center. Kirsten began working with therapy director Angie Rice, an occupational therapist, to help Harper overcome extreme oral aversion. At age 2, Harper began working with Becca Lopez for speech therapy. She is currently working on forming longer sentences, using three-syllable words and improving her overall intelligibility. Harper, now 3, also attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. Preschool program, which places kids with special needs alongside those who are typically developing in the educational space.

Cruising with confidence
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.
The organization kicked off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.
“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”
Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from
Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.
In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County. “These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”
He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join
Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing the first few weeks.”
Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.
“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

PUBLIC AUCTION
Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers, and all participants are invited to return to the Catholic War Veterans post, 250 N. Seventh St., Columbia, for a chicken barbecue dinner beginning at 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the event will benefit PA Hero Walk, a group of veterans that walks from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh every year in June to raise awareness for veterans’ needs, said Donna Ernst, post manager. This will be the first time Post 1306 has held its event since 2019.
The mission of the
Catholic War Veterans is to provide services for God, for country and for home, Ernst commented. “We support all veterans,” she shared. “We have 650 members from across Lancaster County.”
Post 1306 moved to its current Columbia location in 2013. It held its first Hero Walk in 2014. In addition to being a private club, the group organizes multiple events and efforts throughout the year, including visiting veterans in VA hospitals, participating in parades, hosting an Easter party and a Christmas party for families, distributing food to veterans
throughout Lancaster County and holding flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14.
Both Ernst and Mastriania said the club helps them fulfill their desire to serve veterans.
“My father was a veteran. He served in the Army,” Ernst shared. “My dad was my heart.”
Mastriania served in the Marine Corps from 1980 to 1983 and has been a member of the Catholic War Veterans since 2016. He said he not only likes helping other veterans through the organization, but also enjoys the club atmosphere and the bonds that have formed
between members. “We are always looking for more members,” he said. “We get a lot of positive feedback from our members. They say it feels like they are with family when they are here.”
Orders for the chicken barbecue must be received by Monday, May 8. A limited number of extra meals will be available on the day of the event. The chicken barbecue is open to the public in addition to people who are participating in the PA Hero Walk. To purchase tickets, call Ernst at 717-9519117 or Mastriania at 717715-3354.
