Full gallop - 5K plus 10K scheduled
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Aaron Stoltzfus, one of the organizers of the initial White Horse Gallop and Community Day in 2023, was asked about the success of the event, he said the good weather was a factor. “I
thought it went well,” reported Stoltzfus, who noted that 193 runners - twice as many as organizers hoped for - had taken part.
This year, organizers have added a 10K and a number of new activities to the event. The second White Horse Gallop will
be held on Saturday, May 25. Registration at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, will open at 7 a.m. The 10K will begin at 8:15 a.m., and the 5K race will start at 8:30 a.m.
In addition to the races, a state police officer and a doctor from Lancaster General Hospital will
Moore about the Civil War
Author releases new book

Narvon resident and author
Joel Moore is a stickler for details. When presented with the design for the cover of his latest book, “Real Boys of the Civil War,” Moore noticed issues with the equipment the boys were carrying and with their uniforms. He worked with the designer, Gien Carlo Tan, to correct drums and uniforms until he was happy with the look. “It’s gorgeous,” noted Moore of the cover, which depicts more than a dozen boys in Civil War garb.
Moore pointed out that more than 200,000 underaged young men took part in the Civil War. “Real Boys of the Civil War” is Moore’s first work of nonfiction. The book begins with the historiography research paper Moore originally wrote as a student at West Chester University. The book also tells stories of the individual boys who served, and it finishes with photo selections of many of the young soldiers.

Organizers plan to have the smoke trailer, a bounce house, and a mechanical bull ride, as well, and fire trucks will be available for a “touch-a-truck”
and demonstrations. The event will also include a visit from the Life Lion helicopter from Hershey Medical Center if weather permits. A candy drop from a ladder truck is scheduled at noon.

Library Friends to host plant sale, barbecue
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Children in search of a Mother’s Day gift and anyone looking for plants to enhance their patios or gardens are invited to attend the annual spring plant sale being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library on Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Community Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. The event will also feature a chicken barbecue.
Plants for sale will include a large assortment of hanging baskets
and premade patio containers. “We will have 4-inch pots of geraniums and other flowers that children can buy for Mother’s Day the following day,” said Friends member Kate Valentino, noting that a baseball game is generally taking place in the park during the event. “We have a lot of kids come from the ball field, and they can get something for mom.” All plants will be on display in the pavilion at the park. In the case of rain, plants will be available in the Lions Community Building at the park. This year, no bedding plants

Still scribblin’
When Jack Brubaker was about 13 years old and living on the Brubaker Duck Farm in Bird-in-Hand, he began reading a column in the local paper called “The Scribbler.” “I found a good way to learn Lancaster County history,” said Jack.
Jack and his wife, Christine Conant Brubaker, will be interviewed by Don Horning when they are the featured guests of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
Jack graduated from Conestoga Valley High School and went on to attend Dickinson College as an English major. Although he originally had no interest in journalism, by 1970, he was writing for the Danville Register in Danville, Va., where he met Christine, who was dean of students at Stratford College. “Chris has a master’s in college administration,” noted Jack. The pair married and came to live in Lancaster in 1978. Jack went to work for the New Era, taking over “The Scribbler” about a year later. The column turned 105 years old in May, with Jack as its longest continuous author.
Over the years, Jack has written columns that included lists of interesting facts or focused on a particular story - especially local tales that reflect on historical matters. A favorite column concerned Lancaster Township residents who burned a large pile of bamboo, not realizing that the popping sound the variety makes while burning sounds like gunfire. Neighbors called first responders, and police
and fire department personnel from local and neighboring townships arrived to extinguish the flames.
Jack’s column that elicited the most response from readers was penned in the 1980s and concerned a local cat that had birthed 30 kittens in a year. “I received 33 letters saying

he served, but his valor earned him a Medal of Honor. Moore explained that because Gwynne was too young to enlist, he went off to war as a camp helper. “At the battle of Petersburg, (Va.), the captain reminded the boy that he couldn’t go into battle,” said Moore. “(Gwynne responded), ‘That’s not why I’m here,’ and he went in.” Gwynne rescued the flag when the color guard went down, but he lost an arm to cannon fire and suffered a leg wound as well. When Gwynne’s story made the newspapers, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. That is when administrators in Washington, D.C., discovered the war hero was not enlisted. “They backdated his enlistment to when he first joined, and he got full pay,” noted Moore.
Moore, who has been researching and writing about the boys of the
war between the states for 20 years, was in communication with professor Jay Hoar, a University of Maine at Farmington retiree, until Hoar’s death in 2023. Moore has permission to use Hoar’s research, and Moore included Hoar’s story of Benjamin Franklin Williams of Georgia in the book.
Williams was a member of the home guard - boys as young as 6 years old who served as lookouts, couriers, and supply movers, among other duties.
“Williams became a wagoneer at age 7, and he served the entire four years of the war,” relayed Moore, adding, “At age 11, he was a veteran.”
Moore is known for his many works of historical fiction, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.”“Real Boys of the Civil War was launched at Moores Memorial Library, Christiana, on April 27.
Moore will be featured at several upcoming events, including the Civil
War Living History Encampment in Quarryville, from Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, and the Memorial Day event in Maytown on Monday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In June, Moore will be at the Strawberry Festival in Bainbridge on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m., and the Burning Bridge in Columbia on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. He will appear at the White Chimneys Estate in Gap on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., and in August, he will be featured at a 2 p.m. presentation at Hopewell Furnace in Elverson on Sunday, Aug. 11. Moore has more than four decades of experience as an educator and he recalled teaching the Civil War through the eyes of the boys who took part. More information about Moore and his books may be found at www .jarthurmoore.com.

or herbs will be sold.
“We buy (the flowers) wholesale,” Valentino noted. “We will have more container pots this year because we sold out of them last year.”
Chicken barbecue meals will be available beginning at 10 a.m.
The cost of a meal includes a halfchicken, a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Randy Yoder will prepare the chickens on-site.
“We do a half-chicken (rather) than chicken legs,” noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president, adding that the barbecue sells out quickly, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early.
Check and cash will be accepted for payment at the flower sale and the barbecue.
All proceeds from both events will benefit the many activities offered by the library, including the Summer Reading Program, as well as library expenditures. The Friends group recently purchased a new outdoor sign for the library and is looking to finance the cost of chimney repairs. A new sump pump is also needed to help with water issues in the basement of the library, where the Friends’ Read Moore Book Store is located.
Those interested in supporting the library and joining the Friends are invited to attend a meeting of the group. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the library at 2 p.m. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com/ FriendsOfTheMooresMemorialLibrary.
In addition, library director Trish Vandenbosch has announced two upcoming events that will be held at the library.
A program about macro photography will be offered on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. Led by professional photographers Ed and Zach Heaton, attendees will take part in a hands-on close-up photography class. People of all skill levels are welcome. Flowers and other props will be able, and attendees should bring their own cameras and tripods if they have one. A fee will be collected per person. Proceeds will benefit the library.
The library will also present a genealogy workshop on Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. Led by Darlene Colón, president of the Christiana Historical Society, attendees will learn how to research their own family history using historical documents.
To register for either event, stop by the library or contact Vandenbosch at chrlib@christianalibrary.org.
Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. For more information about library activities, visit www.christiana library.org or www.facebook.com/ MooresMemorialLibrary.

10K route. As in the past, runners will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 and return via Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike). Both Route 340 and Route 897 will be closed during the run. Hills will be featured on School Lane Road during the second mile of the run.
The run will be timed by Pretzel City Sports, and those wishing to participate may register at www. pretzelcitysports.com. Registration forms may also be picked up at the fire company and at local businesses. Each participant will receive a swag bag, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last.
Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three males and females in nine age groups, which will be 9 and under, 10 to 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and above. Awards will be crafted by local farrier and blacksmith Eli Stoltzfus, who owns Lanchester Farrier Services.
Water for runners who take part in the 5K will be provided by Legacy Plumbing.
Food at the event will include breakfast sandwiches, lunch items, and ice cream by donation. Breakfast sandwiches will be served from 7 to 10 a.m., and lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funds raised by the races will help the fire company purchase a single-story portable fire training structure. “It will be used to train new firefighters and hone the skills of experienced volunteers,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that the structure helps train firefighters to ventilate roofs and to gain entry and search a building.

This year’s production, “The Search,” is a collection of original works set by local choreographers, including Jill Hertzog, Julie Haney, Timnah Krauter, Haley Martin, Stephanie Morales, Stephanie Martin, and Shenan Hall. This narrated dance
performance explores a world full of chaos and confusion seeking to find a hope that cannot fail.
