Memory dragstrip
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Dean
Graybill of Paradise was known for telling stories of his experiences with automobiles. He considered writing a book to share with family, but after talking to some friends, he realized that his tales might appeal to a wider audience. “(They) said it would be of great local interest,” reported Dean. “They said, ‘I would buy that. People would love that.’”
Working with Masthof Press of Morgantown, Dean has produced 151 pages of 165 stories with the title “Burning Rubber, Slamming Gears, & Cheap Gas,” published in mid-March. The pages are punctuated by color and black-and-white photos of vintage automobiles and trucks. Dean began writing about five years ago by sitting at the computer while listening to classic rock ’n’ roll. “It just took me back,” said Dean of the process. “If it had to do with cars, it had stuck in my memory.” Editor Keith Rohrer added color and detail to Dean’s recollections.
The book recounts Dean’s experiences from Maple Grove to Pequea
Valley and as far south as the Norman Wood Bridge. Names and places that may be familiar to area residents include the “S” turns on Hollander Road, Victor Weaver’s Poultry, Paul Shirk’s car lot, and the New Holland Community Memorial Park, where Dean recalled hanging out in 1971 with eight other young people and their cars. Story No. 81 tells how the group cruised around New Holland and behaved themselves on the “nice straight stretch of Jackson Street,” because they knew local police watched the spot. When they moved to the lot where New Holland Ford is now located, they noticed one of their number was missing. When he arrived 10 minutes later, they learned he had been running interference for the rest by driving exceptionally slowly, which attracted police attention and garnered him a ticket.
Dean also recalled a 1974 incident where he was pulled over while cruising “the loop” in downtown Lancaster. “I had a 1961 Dodge Power Wagon,” he said, explaining that his four-wheel drive, heavy-duty truck had a big motor. Dean was pulled
over on suspicion of having altered the suspension to make the truck sit higher. “I said, ‘This is factory suspension,’” recalled Dean. “The policeman said, ‘Yeah and I’m Elvis Presley.’” Dean agreed to go to court, and headed to Horning Dodge to secure schematics to prove the height of the truck was unchanged. At court, the judge asked Dean and the officer who had pulled him over to take the schematics outside and look at the truck. “(The officer) could see it was original,” said Dean. “The judge said, ‘Case dismissed.’”
The final story in the book is one that Dean sneaked in as a suprise tribute to his wife, Cathy. He and Cathy met when she became friends with Dean’s sister. Dean liked it when Cathy visited their house, but he was too “bashful” to speak to her. That changed when he learned Cathy was interested in him. “I heard she wanted to go out with me, and that gave me the courage to ask her out,” he said.
Readers who are interested in a copy of Dean’s book may search for “Dean Graybill” on Facebook or email him at dehemi@comcast.net.
First White Horse Gallop 5K scheduled
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Bob Buzzard of the White Horse Fire Company, the idea for the first White Horse Gallop 5K and Community Day came from volunteer Aaron Stoltzfus. “(Stoltzfus) thought it would be something to bring the community together,” recalled Buzzard of the origins of the event.
The White Horse Gallop will be held on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the fire station, 111 White Horse Road, Gap. Registration on the day of the event will open at 7 a.m.

that will leave the fire company and travel south on Route 897 until reaching Buena Vista Road, where it will turn right. From there, the route will turn right on to School Lane Road and travel back to Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike), where it will turn right and return to the station. Both Route 340 and Route 897 will be closed during the run. Hills are featured on School Lane Road during the second mile of the run.
Prizes will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners and to the top three males and females in eight age groups, which will be 13 and under, 14 to 19, 20 to See White Horse Fire Company pg 4
Jon Ann Frederick, who heads the Widows Connect group at Petra Church in New Holland, has vivid memories of the last mystery bus tour she took with DOsomething Ministries, a local organization that holds events for widows twice a year. “It was a really neat experience,” recalled Frederick of the trip around the county that included a luncheon with speaker Erma Zimmerman, praise and worship with Chrystal Martin, a Strasburg Rail Road train ride, and ice cream.
The events are organized by Lin Fisher, founder of DOsomething, an organization working both locally and
internationally. On April 25, more than 40 widows, including Frederick, gathered at Gordonville Community Bible Church at Fisher’s request for encouragement, food, and fellowship. Fisher contacts leaders of widow’s groups, like Frederick, at up to 10 area churches to ask them to invite their members to her events. At the April 25 gathering, the widows enjoyed appetizers, followed by a time of praise and worship and a meal of ham, red potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, a roll, and assorted pies for dessert. The tables were covered with pastel tablecloths, decorated with geraniums in a variety of hues, and set with pink and lavender colored flickering candles. See DOsomething pg 3

Fisher opened the event with prayer, and then the group sang “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by Jada Esh on the keyboard. “I’m so glad each of you is here,” said Fisher, who spoke about the struggles the women have faced in dealing with the loss of their husbands and other family members. “It’s OK,” she told the group, encouraging members to be completely honest with Jesus when life feels overwhelming. “God wants to speak personally to

Softball Braves top LCHS, LMH and N. Lebanon
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
In a Monday afternoon clash of Section Four rivals, the Pequea Valley softball team topped Lancaster Catholic 5-2 on the road.
“This was a huge win for us, beating Lancaster Catholic,” said Braves head coach Doug High.
High called on sophomore Sydney Roye to bail out the Braves from a bases-loaded jam early in the game after the Crusaders had scored two
runs in the first inning.
“She came in with the bases loaded,” High said. “She was pretty calm and pitched like she didn’t even realize they were loaded.”
Though the Braves’ offense produced five runs, High’s concern was the two innings in which Pequea batters left a runner at third base.
“Carissa Mulder had a leadoff triple,” he explained.
“Three batters later she was still standing at third base.
“That can shorten a coach’s

life,” he laughed. “Also, Izzy Graham singled, stole second and ended up on third in the other inning.”
The Braves followed that up with a 17-2 defeat of Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon, May 9. Olivia Clark drove in five runs as the two teams played only three innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Maddy Hassis pitched those three innings to earn the victory. She also helped her own cause at the plate with a bases-loaded hit.
“We had 18 kids get into the game,” High said. “We’re playing really good ball.”
The Braves beat Northern Lebanon on Wednesday, handing the Vikings their first Section Four loss of the season. Pequea Valley won at home in walk-off fashion, taking advantage of Northern Lebanon mistakes.
Graham and Mulder both scored on passed balls in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Braves came back from a 5-4 deficit.
Graham, who had gone 2for-2 with two doubles plus a walk, came to the plate in the seventh inning. She singled to make it a three-hit afternoon. Mulder (2-for-4) doubled to give the Braves two runners in scoring position.
Graham sprinted home on a
passed ball. After Maddy Clark bunted for a single, the Vikings opted to walk Olivia Clark intentionally to set up a force at home.
What happened next at home plate was the Vikings’ second passed ball of the inning. Mulder crossed the plate with the winning run.
Roye earned the win, pitching four innings in relief.
“Mackenzie Musser pitched three scoreless innings for us,” High said.
High was impressed with the way the lineup handled Northern Lebanon ace Addison Hollenbach.
“The first time we faced her this year, she had 19 strikeouts,” High explained, referring to the 8-3 loss at Northern Lebanon on April 12. “Today she only had seven strikeouts.”
The Braves earned a spot in the L-L League playoffs, scheduled to face Section One champ Hempfield in the quarterfinals.
BASEBALL
Coming off consecutive defeats to L-L League opponents, the Braves put together an offensive display on Tuesday May 9 at Lancaster Mennonite. The Braves beat the Blazers 17-1.
Myles Furlong had two big hits, including a double, out of the number two spot in the
Pequea lineup. He also stole two bases and scored three runs. Peyton Temple, who also swiped a base, went 2for-4 with an RBI triple. He ended up scoring three times.
While senior Ezekiel Hershey (3-for-4) had the most hits on the day plus one RBI and three runs, junior Jayden Stoltzfus drove in three runs to lead the Braves in that category.
The game ended after four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Stephen Smucker earned the win for PV, going 3 1/3 innings. Hershey came in to record the final two outs, including a strikeout.
The Braves, who were coming off a 7-0 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Monday and an 11-2 loss to Northern Lebanon the previous Thursday, improved to 12-8 on the year.
TENNIS
The boys’ tennis team earned a spot in the PIAA Class 2A state championships thanks to a victory on its home court on Wednesday, May 10. The 3-2 victory over Hanover was in
the District Three 2A consolation match, making the Braves’ the third-place team out of District Three
The previous Wednesday the Braves had come through with a 3-1 victory at Wyomissing. The fifth-seeded Braves defeated the previously unbeaten Spartans only to be stopped by the top-seeded Lancaster Country Day Cougars on Monday, May 8.
Nile Abadir and Michael Georgelis helped lead the Cougars into the championship match against Conrad Weiser.
Meanwhile, in the consolation match, the 7-5 4-6, 6-2 victory by Wade Stoltzfus at number one singles may have been what tipped the scales in Pequea’s favor. Also, in singles play, Cole Stoltzfus won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

40th Terre Hill Car Show planned
On a Monday in May, four vintage car owners gathered in the Terre Hill Park with Harold Kilhefner for a photograph. Martin Zimmerman brought his salmon-colored 1956 Buick. Ed Shirk brought his blue 1970 Charger. Tim Kilhefner, who is Harold’s cousin, brought his black 1987 Buick Grand National, and Kurt Weaver brought his 1967 Oldsmobile 442 W30.
Harold had asked them to meet him with their cars for the purpose of promoting the 40th Terre Hill Antique and Classic Car Show, to be held in the park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Sunday, June 4. Car registration will begin at 8 a.m. Registration will end at 11:30 a.m., and voting will end at 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m.
Cars will be entered in one
of 18 classes sponsored by local businesses. The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1998. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is open to cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old. Class 18 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) judged cars that have scored a First Junior or Senior award. First-, second-, and third-
place awards will be given out in each class. Rather than bring in judges to examine the cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. Entrants are also eligible for door prizes. In addition, representatives of the Weaverland Valley Fire Company will choose a single car to receive a Best of Show trophy. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Cars receiving first-, second-, and third-place recognition for each class will be paraded to the stage areas to receive cash prizes.
The show is all about cars, but the funds that will be raised by the event will help support the Weaverland Valley Fire Company, which
Jay’s Handyman Service
serves the towns of Terre Hill and Goodville.
There is no charge for spectators to attend the show. Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase in the park pavilion. The show will be held rain or shine. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-445-4581.

Animal hospital to celebrate five years
Pine Creek Animal Hospital, 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap, will celebrate its fifth anniversary with an open house on Saturday, May 20, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The business is owned by Dr. Ashley Tuma, who knew from an early age that she wanted to be a veterinarian.
Tuma eventually purchased the former Atglen Veterinary Hospital in 2018 and renamed it Pine Creek Animal Hospital. Since that time, the facility has undergone many changes, including renovations in 2020 and 2021. The practice now has five exam rooms, a dental suite separate from the surgery suite, an ultrasound machine, and other in-house laboratory equipment, as well as offices and additional storage spaces. At present, the hospital employs an equivalent of four and a half full-time practicing veterinarians, along with 20 full-time and six part-time support team members.
The open house is free to the public, regardless of pet ownership and client status. Individuals will be able to talk with the veterinarians and technicians, take a behindthe-scenes tour of the hospital, enjoy free food, and participate in a silent auction. Kids’ activities, including face painting and stuffie adoptions, will also occur on-site. Attendees are welcome to bring their pets, and technicians will be available to trim nails for a suggested donation.

pool of talent, then write through the night and hand their work to the directors early on May 20. After negotiating for their choice of play, directors will rehearse with their actors and a crew of stage technicians to prepare for a 7 p.m. curtain and debut performances of the plays. Creative Works utilizes a “pay what you decide” ticketing model with no fixed ticket prices. Potential audience members are never turned away due to financial limitations. Individuals may reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience was worth after the show. To reserve tickets, visit www.creativelancaster.org.
For the safety and welfare of the staff, dogs and cats must have proof of current rabies vaccination. Funds from the nail trims, along with any additional freewill offerings, will be donated to Brandie’s Hope, a 501(c)(3) fund used to help offset some of the costs incurred by patients in need of emergency care for their pet. The fund was created by the parents of Brandie Kasper, a technician who passed away suddenly in 2021 from a motor vehicle accident.
For more information, call 610-593-6132 or visit www.facebook.com/pinecreek animalhospital.
To make a donation directly to Brandie’s Hope via the Veterinary Care Foundation, visit https://veterinarycare foundation.org/veterinary -practice-donation/; select Pennsylvania as the state and Pine Creek Animal Hospital (Gap) as the veterinary practice.

Cloister Chorus plans concert
The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will present its annual spring concert on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. in the 1741 Meetinghouse (Saal) at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata. The free concert will feature a significant number of compositions created by the community’s founder, Conrad Beissel, and by Sister Föben, who has been recognized as one of America’s first female composers. The pieces have been edited for modern performance by Russell Getz and Christopher Herbert.
In addition, the chorus will present comparative and contrasting choral works by other religious-focused groups of early America, including Moravian, River Brethren, Shaker, and African-American traditions. Give-what-you-will donations will be accepted at the door to the Saal to support the work of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus.
The museum will be open to visitors at noon with free admission to the site. The orientation video will be shown in the auditorium at 12:30 p.m., followed at 1 p.m. by a cake and beverage reception in the Visitor Center until the time of the performance.
Two historic buildings on the property, the Saal and the Saron (the sisters’ dormitory), will be open for visitation with interpreters. No guided tours will be offered that afternoon, but visitors will be encouraged to follow the halfmile route along paved pathways through the property and around the historic buildings until the hourlong performance begins at 3 p.m.
Attendees may also stop by the Visitor Center to view a display of memorabilia from the years that the summer drama, “Vorspiel,” was performed on Saturday nights in the amphitheater. For over 20 years starting in the 1960s, the chorus and cast sang and acted out the story of a fictionalized romance between a celibate sister and a Revolutionary War soldier. Five of the concert pieces this year were sung in the pageant of Cloister music.
Individuals interested in becoming a member of the chorus may contact Mark Herr at minstrel52@hotmail.com or call the Cloister site at 717733-6600 for more information. To learn more, visit www.ephratacloister.org.

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.
As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere,
which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.
The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh
fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating Giant or Martin’s store.
For more information on Giant’s community impact efforts, visit www.giantfood stores.com/pages/purpose. More information about Flashfood is available at www.flashfood.com.
