Pequea Valley
Connected to community
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) holds commencement exercises for the Class of 2024 at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Wednesday, May 29, at 6 p.m., three of the 115 students who will graduate will address friends, family, and faculty members.
Seniors Myles Furlong, son of Heather and Matt Furlong of Gap; Owen Hartmann, son of Kelly and Michael Hartmann of Gordonville; and Hannah McGowan, daughter of Sheri and Chris McGowan of Gap, have all prepared speeches to present.
Furlong has written a speech that tells the story of high school using a plotline that traces the rising action that occurs in freshman and sophomore years to a climax in junior year and completes the tale in senior year. “(The story will) encompass big moments of each year,” said Furlong, noting he will emphasize how individual students build their character and finish with motivation. “(My speech will encourage) each student to after high school write their own unique stories that are important to them and inspiring to others as well,” Furlong said. Following graduation, Furlong plans to major in engineering at Penn State University Park in State College. He said that his time at PVHS has been marked by the
closeness between students and teachers. “You know almost every teacher,” Furlong remarked. “If you need a resource or letter of recommendation, you have a lot of valid sources and people to reach out to.”
Hartmann’s speech explores the concept of high school as the foundation for both the individual students’ personal futures and the future of society at large. “I bring in an analogy with the new building,” said Hartmann, referencing the high school and middle school currently being constructed on the PVHS grounds. “There are all these parts and materials needed to build a school, and
all these different people in the high school with their skills who come together to build a greater society,” he said. In the fall, Hartmann will attend Penn State Harrisburg, where he will major in electrical engineering.
Hartmann is glad he attended PVHS because of the many club opportunities open to students.
McGowan is proud to have attended a school that led the way in making technology a part of each student’s daily education. “Schools have come here to ask how we did this,” she stated. “It’s nice to be part of a school that is looked up to like that.”
McGowan’s speech will focus on the connections students have
made throughout their Pequea Valley School District experience and what that means going forward. “Even though our schooling at PV is ending, we will still carry all those connections for the rest of our lives,” she said. “We will still be connected to this place and our graduating class (members).”
In the fall, McGowan will attend Coastal Carolina University to major in marine science.
Class president Nicholas Ammon, son of Deanna and Bruce Ammon, Gap, will give opening remarks and accept diplomas on behalf of his classmates. The ceremony will conclude with senior members of the Chamber Singers performing the school alma mater.
Summer fun at the library
BY ANN MEAD ASH
A few years ago, the staff and board of the Intercourse Library thought it would be fun to celebrate the start of the Summer Reading Program with a special event, and the Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff was born.
The third annual Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff will be held at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, on Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. As in the past, the event will include games, food, and a used book sale. Patrons of the Salisbury Township Public Library in Gap are invited to attend.
Activities scheduled for the Family Fun Day will include rock painting; giant yard games, such as Connect Four and an inflatable dart game with a large bullseye; and fun with bubbles. A scavenger hunt is planned inside the library with free books for those who participate. Blank bookmarks will be available for a “design your own” craft. Cookie decorating will also be offered, with one free cookie per child.
A fun run for children will be held. Children will run at different times according to age. Children ages 4 to 7 will race at 10 a.m., and children ages 8 to 12 will race at 11 a.m.

Christiana Fire Company to host car show
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Christiana Fire Company will present the Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show on Saturday, June 1, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee, with all proceeds benefiting the fire company. Dash plaques will be presented to the first 30 entrants. Those who register in advance will receive a discount. Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. Same-day registrations will also be accepted.
“All makes and models are welcome. We are talking tractors, rigs and motorcycles - you name it,” said Shawnie Betts, who is co-chair of the event along with fire company trustee Brandon Maser.
In addition to the car show, there will be food for sale, including chicken
barbecue prepared by fire company members. The Taco RV and Cool Summer Ice Cream food trucks will also be on hand, and music will be provided by The 45 Guy, who will spin vinyl records.
The first Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show was held last fall, but the event fell victim to inclement weather, so organizers decided to change the car show to spring. “We are hoping for better weather, so more people are
apt to come out,” said Betts, noting that planning for the event has been going on the past six months. “I would love to see 50-plus cars.” Those who attend the show will

Church to celebrate 300th anniversary
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The community is invited to join members of the Pequea Presbyterian Church in Gap as it celebrates its 300th anniversary on Saturday, May 25, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The day will feature food, a silent auction, displays of historical items and cornhole games for children. Live music will be provided by Summit Hill Bluegrass.
“We will have historical artifacts on display inside and we will have time period demonstrations like sheep-to-shawl,” said Jim Kennedy, chairperson of the anniversary committee, noting that a barbecue food truck will be present. Food will be free, but donations will be accepted.
The historic buildings will be open throughout the day, including the stone church, characterized by its arched stained glass windows and curved pews, as well as the session house, which is a separate building from the church. It is situated next to the running waters of the Pequea Creek and surrounded by a prayer garden. Inside, the building is dominated by a large fireplace.
“Business meetings were not permitted in the church, so they
had separate buildings,” explained pastor Alfred Wanner. “Behind the fireplace screen is one of the church’s original chandeliers. (The chandelier) was up in the ceiling and it had little gas lamps.” Several of the lamps are also on display in the session house.
According to a written history of the church, it was organized on Oct. 13, 1724. The first church, a log

building that was located in the present-day cemetery, was built sometime in the 1750s, followed by the construction of a small stone church. The church celebrated its 175th anniversary in 1899, when plans were formulated to construct a new church, which is the present-day building. It was completed in the fall of 1902.
“There is a time capsule in the cornerstone from more than 100 years ago, and later on in the year, we will open that and make up our own time capsule to replace it,” Kennedy noted. “We will put in newspapers, church bulletins and pictures.”
Visitors to the anniversary event will also learn about the church’s history. In the 1740s, minister and preacher George Whitfield reportedly preached to 3,000 people who had gathered on the church grounds to hear him. The history states that Whitfield had to stand in the fork of a walnut
tree to be heard. The tree has since been taken down, but a plaque was placed at the base of another walnut tree on the church campus to commemorate the event.
The site also includes a cemetery. “There is a lot of history in this cemetery,” said Kennedy. “The cemetery has veterans buried there from the Revolutionary War and every war this nation has ever been in.”
Wanner noted that current congregation members come from
