Lunch Break isa Eckert, director of early learning with the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), and Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy with The Factory Ministries, are hoping area students from birth to age 18 will take a break from their summer schedules to join them at Paradise Park for a nutritious lunch and some educational sustenance. “Our goal is to provide activities, enrichment, and lunch,” said Eckert, who noted families that have a further need for food, may connect with The Factory Ministries resources over lunch and begin to utilize The Factory Market to help meet that need. “The idea is for (children) to stay and take part in the activities,” said Beiler of the new Lunch and Learn program, which will include group games; STEM activities; guest speakers such as Salisbury Elementary teacher Anita Girvin, who will do a garden demonstration; crafts; gross

“Our goal is to provide activities, enrichment, and lunch” of July 20 and 27. Each program will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Children may enjoy their lunch in the park or take it home. Parent or caregiver supervision is required for children to take part. Lunches may be taken home to siblings who cannot attend. Lunches will consist of a variety of food items, including sandwiches, crackers, cheese, meat,

vegetables, and snacks. During the final Lunch and Learn on Aug. 3, a pizza party will be held and children will have an opportunity to choose back-to-school supplies provided by Bellevue Presbyterian Church. “Each of the children will have ‘Back-to-school bucks’ (to spend). They can shop for all the supplies they want in the park,” said Eckert. It is necessary for students to be registered for the program so that plenty of food is prepared for all. Students may register at https://tinyurl.com/pvllearn. Questions should be directed to Eckert at Lisa_eckert@pequea valley.org or 717-381-5020 or to Beiler at karla@thefactory ministries.com or 717-687-9594, ext. 206.

Students who reside in the Pequea Valley School District area are invited to Paradise Park on Wednesdays for Lunch and Learns.

“We reach more children in the summer than during the school year because each week we are in a different location,” said Nadine Welk, children’s ministry specialist coordinator with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), perhaps best known for the Good News Clubs the organization runs after school. Over the summer, CEF organizes Five-Day Clubs, vacation Bible school (VBS) programs, and Good News Camps. This year, summer programs will be held at 17 locations in Lancaster County. See CEF pg 3

Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod, a performing arts school located in New Holland, likes to point out that one of the organization’s missions is to value the God-given gifts in each person and then to work to develop those gifts under Cavod’s goal to “Create With Purpose.” Those concepts will be on display when Cavod holds its annual spring dance concert at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 16, and Cavod Academy will hold its yearly dance concert on two consecutive nights Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m. each evening. at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Calvin and Janet High Fine Arts Center.

MakeFilms of Lancaster produced the video, which begins with Cavod’s roots in a barn in the Pequea Valley area of the Welsh Mountains. Cavod later moved to a location on West Main Street in New Holland, then to its present spot in the New Holland Shopping Center location. The Cavod branch at Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim, opened in 2021. Students in the Friends in Motion class - a weekly dance class for teens and adults with intellectual disabilities will take part in the dance concert. “There aren’t many opportunities for (those students) to perform this way and be celebrated,” said Dienner. “Our teachers are geniuses at choreographing to the ability of these students, and it’s so beautiful. I look forward to that every year.” Tickets, which are required to attend the dance concert, may be purchased at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. “It’s a representation of all we do,” said Dienner, noting that the presentation spans two nights in order to accommodate the 350 students, age 3 through adult, who will take part. “The concert is a celebration of what they have accomplished throughout the year.” Dienner noted that performances in the genres of tap, ballet, modern, jazz, worship dance, hip-hop, and creative movement will be featured under professional lighting with bright and colorful costumes. The show will exhibit the talents of both students and teachers. “People say this is completely different from any other dance concert they have seen because it’s done very creatively,” said Dienner. “Our teachers are amazing choreographers, so we may do tap with a musical theater theme or ballet with a Broadway theme.” Dienner said that the efforts to make the recital more interesting have garnered positive feedback from attendees. The 2022 dance concert will also feature a short film on the history of Cavod.

They add a snack and a 30-minute craft to the basic program. “The church that hosts us will provide volunteers to help with the crafts,” said Welk, who explained that CEF missionaries and staff work with the church VBS director on the craft and can be present to help if needed. CEF VBS programs are lined up at seven area churches. Welk explained that the basic ministry curriculum is the same for all programs, which begin with a 90-minute activity period including large group game time, welcome and prayer, a Word Up period with a catchy phrase concerning the main lesson, Bible verses and songs, a Bible lesson, a review, and closing games. Five-Day Clubs, which use the 90-minute basic format, are held in host homes. For the summer of 2022, host homes have been secured in the Hempfield area, the Lampeter-Strasburg area, Lititz, Mount Joy, the city of Lancaster, Manheim, Manheim Township, and Paradise. Hosts generally invite participants to their home, where CEF summer missionaries

They went on to outlast Reece Girdharry and Will Stillman of Lancaster Mennonite in Saturday’s semis 6-2, 7-6 (3). Brubaker and Orr claimed the gold, however, defeating Itegi and Stoltzfus 6-3, 6-0, still enabling the doubles team from Pequea to qualify for the PIAA Class 2A state championships. In the first round of the PIAA Class 2A team championships, Pequea Valley lost a close 3-2 match to Central Columbia on Tuesday, May 17 at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport. Itegi and freshman Hayden Winey each won their singles matches in straight sets. Itegi took the number two singles 6-4, 6-0. Winey matched those winning margins at number three singles. Stoltzfus bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the opening set of number one singles to tie the match with a 6-2 win. He dropped the third set 6-3, however. At number one doubles, Cole Stoltzfus and Sam Arena proved to be a formidable pair. After a 6-1 setback though fought hard to stay alive in the second set, eventually succumbing to their opponents 7-6. Joel Peifer and Cole McEvoy came up short at the number two doubles with 6-4, 6-1 scores.

Welk said that CEF Lancaster summer missionaries and interns, ages 14 to 18, will train at Camp Harmony in western Pennsylvania in June. During their week at camp, they will learn the program and be evaluated on each part that they teach. “So it is older kids teaching younger about Jesus,” said Welk. Space is limited in the camps, and registration for each program is required one week before the program starts. Children may be registered for a program by clicking on the “summer programs” button at www.ceflancaster.org. Readers who have specific questions may call 717-569-5412.

Lancaster County continues to grapple with the avian flu, and local residents should keep various facts and tips in mind. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) does not impact humans, but there is no cure for avian flu. HPAI is transmitted through contact with fecal matter from wild birds, infected birds, contaminated equipment, and contaminated boots and clothing. In order to protect flocks from the disease, backyard chicken owners should employ several precautions. Poultry should be kept inside its coop to avoid contact with wild birds. Birdhouses and feeders used by wild birds should be removed. People See Flu pg 12
