Refrigerator-worthy

OnMay 11, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) showed appreciation to the top 15% of the Class of 2023 by inviting seniors with the highest grade point averages, along with their parents, to gather for recognition in the auditorium.

The event, known as the Best of the Class of 2023, was opened by school counselor Jason Davis, who noted that these select students have “exemplified dedication, hard work, and perseverance throughout their high school careers.” “In spite of obstacles, these learners have consistently performed at an academically high level,” he said.

Assistant principal Amy Koberstein made a special address to students and parents. Koberstein noted, “Your parents’ refrigerators have been plastered with A+ assignments for the past 13 years.” She went on to encourage students as they move forward, saying, “It is my

hope that you do not disregard the passions that excite you. I encourage you to seek the success in life that brings you joy, happiness, and, most importantly, fun.” She concluded by adding, “Don’t forget to honor and remember your friends, parents, and family. Go home and hang your certificates on the fridge.”

Assistant to the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) superintendent Rich Eby offered recognition from the school by first listing all the career hopes of the top students. “Business administra-

tion entrepreneurship, music education, research and design, video game design, automotive engineering technology, nursing,” Eby said, pointing out, “You are the elite top 15% of the PVHS Class of 2023, and this is a list of the first choices (for careers).” He charged students to take on their future jobs with “the intentions of making the world a good place.” “Your first choices will put you in a position to have a positive impact,” he said. “We can’t wait to see how things will go for you.”

LVS schedules 30th annual auction

“It’s only one day this year. That’s a big difference,” said Katie Martin, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) event coordinator, of the 30th annual LVS auction, which will be held on Saturday, June 10, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Martin noted that all the activities will be held outdoors on the LVS grounds at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland. LVS provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.

The event will open with a by-donation breakfast including pancakes, eggs, and hash browns, beginning at 7 a.m. A candy drop from an ultralight plane will be held at 8 a.m., weather permitting. LVS CEO Kirt Barden will welcome the gathering at 8:15 a.m., and the live auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. with crafts, farm supplies, and groceries going over the block.

PVSD school board vice president Bryant Ferris offered congratulations from the board, commenting on the proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” “It takes many people to provide a safe, healthy environment where children are given the security they need to develop and flourish to realize their hopes and dreams,” he said. “This celebration brings together the villagers who were most important along the journey. Go forward knowing the village is always here for you and rooting for you.”

Each of the top students present was given the opportunity to stand at the podium and talk about one teacher who had been an influence during his or her education. Each student was also asked to talk about activities he or she had been involved in at PVHS and to share his or her future plans. This year’s top students were Cameron Beiler, Peter Brumbach, Madison Clark, Olivia Clark, Brooke Graham, Jesse Hoopes, Cole McEvoy, Wyatt McGinnis, Joel Peifer, William Porter, Olivia Ross, Wade Stotlzfus, Kianna Winey, and Noah Zink.

Flag football just for fun

Teresa Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit down, but by the end of the season,

he was playing the whole game.”

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.

Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.”

Flowers and plants, power tools, indoor furniture, and hunting and outdoor items will be sold between 9 a.m. and noon. Pulled pork sandwiches will be available for purchase beginning at 10:30 a.m.

At noon, a presentation featuring LVS participants will be held, and Brian French, director of programs for LVS, will speak.

Specialty items will go up for bids at 12:15 p.m. “We have some Bernina sewing machines,” said Martin. At 12:30 p.m., quilts, wall hangings, and outdoor furniture, including a wooden playground ark, will be auctioned, as will portions of meat. Pork halves, beef quarters, and a barbecue pig will be sold. “A barbecue pig is a whole pig that is already roasted,” said Martin, who said the pig will weigh about 150 pounds and will feed up to 50 people.

At 1 p.m., at least five sheds will be sold. LVS marketing and communications assistant Emily Bauman said that last year’s sheds were well crafted. “They were beautiful last year,” said Bauman. “They look like miniature houses. They are just gorgeous.”

The auction will conclude with the sale of frozen foods.

Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the food pantry at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. Food items that are sought include Hamburger Helper, boxed mashed potatoes, pasta and pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese kits, oatmeal, and canned tuna.

LVS is also seeking volunteers to help out with the auction. Readers who would like more information about the event or volunteering may visit www.lighthousevoc.org.

Tenfold, 308 E. King St., Lancaster, will host the Lancaster Housing Services Landlord Forum at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, and at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13. A light meal will be provided at both events.

Attendees will learn about how Tenfold’s housing services can benefit them and hear about new City of Lancaster code enforcement regulations. Attendees will also learn about Tenfold’s Housing Services programs, the new landlord incentive, and Lancaster city code enforcement.

PV baseball loses 4-3 lead in District opener

The Pequea Valley baseball team was unable to hold its brief 4-3 lead in the third inning of Monday’s District Three Class 3A playoff game at Trinity High School.

The Shamrocks came back to tie the score in the home half of the opening-round game at Camp Hill. A four-run fourth and six runs in the sixth spelled the end of the Braves’ (12-9) quest for advancement.

Ryan Balaban slugged a home run and drove in two runs for the Shamrocks. Josiah Bowie hit a solo home run to lead Trinity to a 14-4 win.

In the four-run third inning by Pequea, sophomores

Stephen Smucker and Dominick Burrell each drove in a run as did junior Jayden Stoltzfus, who doubled in a run and came around to score one.

Peyton Temple, who went 1-for-3, also came around to score. The Braves were held to five hits, including a single by freshman Logan Zynn, who also scored a run.

In this year’s format of taking seven teams from Class 3A into districts, seeds 2 through 7 face off in the first round with the three winners and the top seed making up the semi-finals.

SOFTBALL

The Pequea softball team also suffered a 14-4 loss on the road in the district playoffs. The sixth-seeded Braves traveled to Duncannon where they faced the number three seed Susquenita Lady Hawks on Monday, May 22, for a first-round game in District Three 3A games.

“We got their first two batters out and couldn’t get out the next eight,” Doug High, the Braves’ head coach, said of the Hawks’ six-run first inning.

The Hawks carried an 8-1 lead into the third inning where the Braves trimmed the lead to 8-3.

“Olivia Clark had a nice double to drive in two runs,” High explained.

Freshman Lena Beckenbaugh belted a three-run home run to help the Hawks. Sophomore Tierney Stuempfle went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored. She also reached base on a walk and was hit by a pitch.

Pequea freshman Izzy Graham led the offense with a 2for-3 game, including two runs scored. Chavelle Fisher also had a double and a run batted in. Carissa Mulder went 1-for-2 with a run. Victoria Smoker stroked an RBI single.

The Hawks improved to 183 while the Braves’ season ended at 12-9.

“We set out to make it to the post-season,” High said, looking back on the 2023 campaign. “We accomplished that goal.

“It was a nice to see the team turn it around,” continued the coach. “We went from five wins last year to 12 wins this year and getting to districts.

“Izzy Graham and Carissa Mulder are two of our best hitters,” said High. While Mulder, who wrapped up her junior season, and Graham are expected back next year, the Braves bid farewell to some key seniors.

“Madison Clark played third base for us this year,” High said. “She was at second base the last two years and I moved her to third this year. She did a nice job.

“Second base was also a senior,” he added. “Shania Smoker moved from short. Between the two of them, they had two position changes as seniors - for the good of the team. They did admirable jobs.

“Olivia Clark was our catcher, and she minimized the stolen bases for sure,” High added.

Staying with the middle of the field, the Braves will also say farewell to their center fielder Sarah Arment and pitcher Mackenzie Musser.

“She had tremendous range,” High said. “If the ball would go off the bat and anywhere from right-center to left-center, you didn’t need to worry; Sarah was going to catch it.

“Mackenzie had the most innings pitched for us,” High concluded.

TRACK & FIELD

At the District Three Class 2A Track & Field Championships, Pequea’s cross country standout Aubrey Ressler came through with excellent finishes.

The freshman competed in three of the girls’ events in

the two-day championships, which were held at Shippensburg University on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.

Ressler finished 13th in the 800-meter race at a pace of 2:39.25. She also ran the 1,600 in 5:41.16, earning seventh place.

In the 3200, Ressler raced to a fifth-place finish, registering a time of 12:17.50.

Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the team members on cheers, and they cheer for the flag football teams and then perform during a break between games and at the end of the game. Wiedemer has connected with the World Cup Jupiter special needs cheering team, which practices at Spooky Nook, for a visit with the Challenger team. “The (World Cup Jupiter cheerleaders) will come and do their routine,” said Wiedemer, who is also

working to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders to a game to do a clinic with the cheer team. “I try to have guests each week,” said Wiedemer, who is also in touch with an internationally known magician from Philadelphia about a guest appearance.

Wiedemer first got involved in the program about seven years ago, noting that she and her husband had often talked about doing this type of volunteer work. She said that 10

volunteers per game are needed for a successful program. Individuals who wish to volunteer may email teresaw@udsfoundation.org or call 717-715-8775.

There is no cost for individuals with disabilities to take part in Challenger football or cheerleading. Registration is now open at www.udservices .org/Challenger. Those who register by Friday, June 9, will receive a free T-shirt. A parent or guardian must remain at

Calvary with the participant throughout the program.

Wiedemer said in 2022, about 45 participants joined the program. This year, she would like to have 60 participants to have plenty of players for each team. Wiedemer noted that the program is open to participants from within and outside Lancaster County.

GOTR’s experience-based curriculum integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The organization currently operates 171 local councils across the United States and Canada, serving nearly 200,000 girls annually.

The recent funding marks the third year of partnership between GOTR and Rite Aid Healthy Futures, the public charity affiliated with Rite Aid. The grant supports the

two organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening and empowering local communities.

The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ footprint, with funding focused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.

Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access for girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities. Funds will also go to strengthening the orga-

nization’s core programming and training while supporting sustainability across local councils, many of which are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.

The partnership between Healthy Futures and GOTR was established in 2020, with an initial grant of $1 million supporting programming during the pandemic. The 2020 grant contributed to GOTR’s swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.

Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives. Summer Music Series at Long’s Park is a Lancaster institution

They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.

Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be conducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.

“It’s a special event and businesses are allowing us to have this event,” said Ellis. “The series doesn’t happen without these sponsors. It’s not a nicety; it’s a necessity. They’ve really stepped up in an economy that doesn’t allow for this type of funding.”

“We curate music and art for

everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis.

“Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”

If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.

Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90-minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this year will be celebrated on July 2.

“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew up here, they’ll say, ‘I remember going to the Long’s Park Summer Music Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”

The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer

Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.

“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We

don’t look for bands that create an on-stage performance through pyrotechnics and lighting. We want it to be pure art through music. We want to have artists who are true to their craft.”
