PVHS Honors Top Students t 6:45 p.m. on May 12, members of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 2022 who had placed in the top 15% academically gathered in the school auditorium with parents, administrators, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) board members, and invited faculty. The purpose of the event was to acknowledge the accomplishments of the students. School counselor Jason Davis welcomed the gathering and told students “Your work has made a lasting impression.” Assistant principal Amy Koberstein spoke to the parents and students, saying, “To have earned a spot at this ceremony, you must have learned the importance of working hard ... and never settling for less than you know you are capable of accomplishing.”

Salisbury Facilitator Wins Citadel Award

American Cancer Society Fundraiser Scheduled

In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.”

and superintendent Erik Orndorff. Students were asked to briefly discuss their plans after graduation and name the teacher they invited to the ceremony along with the reason for the invite. Each student received a special certificate. Students who were honored were Emily Ammon, Olivia Ammon, Emily Diller, Emily Eby, Maxwell Feeser, Sierra Fisher, Molly Groff, Joshua Hershey, Kylie McGowan, Dylan Ratjavong, Alias Reiter, Liana Rogers, Julia Shaubach, Ethan Smucker, Deena Stoltzfus, Madison Weaver, Hailey Yothers, and Tyler Zook.

Teaching With Heart

Salisbury Elementary School teacher Matt Rogers is the recipient of a Citadel Heart of Learning Award.

On March 16, when Salisbury Elementary School principal Sheri McGowan received notice that fourth-grade teacher Matt Rogers was a recipient of the Citadel Heart of Learning Award given by Citadel Credit Union, she wanted to give him the surprise announcement in a special way. McGowan hurried to the playground, where fourth-grade students were at recess, and she informed the students, along with Rogers’ fellow grade-level facilitator,

Emily Frank, swearing them all to secrecy and solemnity. Back in the school, McGowan acted especially serious as she asked Rogers and Frank to follow her to Rogers’ classroom, where the students were gathered. “Mrs. McGowan pulls us across the room,” recalled Rogers, who was sure something ominous was about to happen. “Only (for us) to hear it was related to this award,” he said, grinning. Rogers was nominated for the award by Salisbury staff member Patricia Manning, along with the family of a child in his class. The See Award pg 2

Assistant superintendent Rich Eby said that the district began an Apple Education One-to-One Initiative 14 years ago and the Mass Customized Learning (MCL) journey eight years ago. “You helped detail what it meant to be a true MCL culture,” he said to the students. In the MCL model, the curriculum is adjusted to meet each student’s needs. To reflect the students’ ownership of their learning and the teacher’s role in facilitating the learning process, students are called learners and teachers are called facilitators. PVSD board vice president Christian Brackbill said to the group, “You entered as students and you’re leaving as learners. You entered with teachers and you’re leaving with facilitators.” Each student was called to the front of the auditorium to be congratulated by board members

award has been given to teachers in the greater Philadelphia area, extending into Chester and Lancaster counties, with the goal of recognizing teachers who show dedication in and outside the classroom. Rogers received the award, which includes a cash prize, at a special gala held at the Mann Center in Philadelphia on May 2. According to Rogers, a panel selects winners from nominations in elementary, middle, and high school categories. “The goal (of the award) is to recognize local teachers who show dedication in and outside the classroom,” said McGowan. Rogers was overwhelmed by the honor. “We are really fortunate to have some incredible educators here, so it was a huge honor to be selected for that award,” he said, adding, “I think I earned that through the collaborative work we do here at Salisbury.” Although the monetary prize is intended for personal use, Rogers has already used some of it for classroom supplies. Although Rogers expressed appreciation for the gala event, he spoke glowingly of the experience of having a video production crew sent to the school by Citadel. “They took time to interview students and co-workers,” said Rogers. Some of the students who were interviewed mentioned that they met Rogers in kindergarten and looked forward to having him as a teacher in fourth grade. Others used words like fun, silly, and brave to describe Rogers. “The opportunity for kids to give a voice to emotions is something I emphasize in our environment, so it was really neat to witness what they had to say,” said Rogers, noting it was also nice to hear affirmation in their words. “Validation isn’t a given in education, and to come out of (COVID-19 challenges), it was a substantial boost of confidence that the sacrifices (teachers) make are worth it,” said Rogers, adding that most teachers go into the field hoping to make an impact on students. “That validation was the most powerful part of this all,” he said.

For 2022, Relay is back, and to celebrate, organizers are inviting area residents to come enjoy the carnival-style event they have planned. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. As in the past, teams will gather at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, forming a 50-team tent city, as each team keeps at least one member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or

Experience IU13 BY ANN MEAD ASH

“People know (the IU13) from the lens of special education classrooms, and that is the foundation of who we are, but we have a 50-year history of doing really good work,” said Shannan Guthrie, program director with the LancasterLebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13). “We take that dedication to other areas.” Among those areas are helping teachers with curriculum development and school districts to maximize funding. A sampling of the IU13’s activities will be highlighted during the group’s

50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, June 9, at the Lancaster offices, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 4 to 7 p.m. Organizers will have a plethora of activities ready for attendees to enjoy. Among those will be the Star Lab, a portable planetarium that can hold up to 20 people, which will be set up in the IU’s large conference room. A demonstration of Brailing services will give attendees an idea of the number of books and flyers the IU transfers into Braille format each year. “We will showcase our Refugee Center and our cultural navigator ser-

vices,” said Guthrie, who explained that cultural navigators help families to meet with other families and navigate the system to find babysitters, shelter, education, and health care services. A demonstration of orientation and mobility services will be held, and STEM activities will show how lessons can be adapted for all levels of learning. “It will be in an expo style with examples (of what the IU13 does) all over the place,” said Guthrie, who added that Lisa Sanchez, a representative of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, will talk about summer camps. Other stops on the visit might include learning about organ tissue donation or meeting Luca, a facility dog that that travels to classrooms within the IU. “We will have free hot dogs, water, and cupcakes for families while supplies last,” said Guthrie, who noted that school resource officers will hand out icy pops, and that food trucks will be located in the courtyard. Organizers have also prepared a special page that highlights milestones of IU13 history at www.iu13.org/history. “IUs were founded in 1965,” said Guthrie. “The IUs opened their offices in 1971.” Guthrie emphasized that members of the public are welcome at the free event. “The idea is to celebrate (and) learn about the work we do,” she said, noting that she hopes attendees will leave with “an understanding of the breadth of IU13.” “There are so many amazing things happening that people don’t (know about),” she said. Readers who would like to attend are asked to register so that organizers can plan to have enough food and door prizes. To register, please email communications@iu13.org. At 12:30 p.m., approximately eight to 10 quilts and quilt tops ranging in size from wall hangings to full-size quilts will be sold. At 1 p.m., sheds and outdoor furniture will go across the block. Martin reported that up to three sheds and seven or eight pieces of outdoor furniture have been secured. Organizers are hoping to raise $145,000 at the event, which will help offset the costs for individuals who take part in the LVS program under private pay arrangements, as well as offsetting general program costs. Currently, LVS serves nearly 190 participants. The mission of LVS is to provide vocational services for individuals with developmental disabilities and to offer opportunities for personal growth. Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) participants are so busy working in small groups in the community that the organization is short on vehicles to transport them to job sites. For that reason, during the organization’s 29th annual auction on Saturday, June 11, the auctioneer will pause to fundraise specifically for the purchase of cars. “It’s a dire need for us,” said Katie Martin, LVS event coordinator. All the excitement, fun, and food will be back when this year’s auction kicks off on Friday, June 10, at 4 p.m. with pulled pork sandwich meals and sales of flowers and other plants in the parking lot at LVS, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland. At 5 p.m., the crowd will be welcomed, and at 5:15 p.m., the traditional sky diver will open the event, weather permitting. The auctions will

begin at 5:30 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m. June 10 activities will include a children’s auction. Among the items that will go up for bids during the evening will be tools, camping and hunting equipment, and pork halves and beef quarters. On June 11, a by-donation breakfast featuring eggs, pancakes, sausages, and hash browns will be held from 6 to 10 a.m. Fresh homemade doughnuts will also be available. Sub sandwiches and beverages will be sold at 7 a.m. Starting at 10 a.m. foods available for purchase will include chicken barbecue

“Green Project” Grants Awarded The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group awarded its Green Project grants to eight more Lancaster County organizations, each of which had showed a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards of up to $500, a total of 71 Lancaster County organizations have received green grants from the club over the past seven years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include Gnome Countryside, for establishing a Sustainability Summit in September for leaders from local college environmental clubs, businesses, and the community; Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, launching a church group, called Creation Care Kids, whose overall goal is to teach families, friends, and neighbors the value of understanding and preserving the Earth; and Historic Poole Forge, rebuilding and renovating raised beds and setting new plants at its Enrichment and Children’s Education Garden, which was damaged during

a summer flood. In addition, grants were awarded to Homefields Inc. to expand “Talks in the Fields” events to include activities that engage volunteers and community members in creating useable goods from its farm products that can be shared at Millersville’s monthly Manor Market; Kraybill Mennonite School to purchase a greenhouse that will expand its organic learning garden, which was developed in partnership with the Edible Garden; and Landis Homes Friends of the Woods and Wetlands to develop a speakers series that will include presentations by professionals on a variety of topics designed to expand environmental awareness. Grants were also awarded to Landis Woods Nature Preschool for improving and expanding its previously launched sustainable garden by adding archways between raised beds, an outdoor composter, and a tiller for mixing compost into the soil, and Montessori Academy of Lancaster for acquiring several

unassembled turning compost bins for use with the restart and rejuvenation of its handson composting program. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the club’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. Charitable, educational, or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet are eligible to apply for a grant of $500 or less, according to program rules. The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Friday, March 31, 2023. Recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22.
