Heritage Days - fun for kids and more!
BY ANN MEAD ASH“We have so many kids’ activities, between the tractor pull and the tractor rides, and the Intercourse Library is doing kids’ activities on Friday evening,” said Mike Sensenig, one of the organizers of the annual Heritage Days in Intercourse. Sensenig noted that the bounce house will be on-site again this year, but in a different location.
“The cornhole tournament was so successful, we needed more room, so we moved the bounce house,” he explained.
This year’s Heritage Days celebration will be held in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15. On June 14, activities will begin at 5 p.m., and on June 15, the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast for purchase will kick off the day at 6:30 a.m.
“There will be a pickleball
tournament this year on the new pickleball courts,” said Sensenig, who noted that lessons and demonstrations were part of last year’s event. Double-elimination tournament play will begin at 4 p.m. on June 14 and 8 a.m. on June 15. Teams of two people may register by Saturday, June 8, by emailing lhaley@ hcometz.com. There is a per-team cost to register.
A volleyball tournament will also be held. Sensenig said the tournament generally attracts more than 60 teams. Teams may register at www.lancastertourn aments.com/upcomingevents.
The cornhole tournament, organized by The Factory Ministries, will begin at 10 a.m. on June 15. More information may be found at www.thefactory ministries.com.
On June 14 at 7:30 p.m., Myron Stoltzfus will hold the Intercourse trivia competition. “There are 20 trivia questions about the town, and it’s a $100 first prize,” noted Sensenig.
Fun for kids will continue on Saturday, with the candy drop at noon and a lineup of entertainment, including a show by Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, juggler Lucien Ivey, and Ryan & Friends. “Ryan & Friends is pretty popular,” stated Sensenig. Live musical entertainment will feature the Ironwood Drive Band on June 14 and ’60s music by Terry G on June 15. The Churchmen will be in concert at the park on June 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Following the concert, a laser show will complete the event. “That’s the big change this year,” said Sensenig, who noted that the show is best viewed from within the park. “It’s a new idea. We are excited (about it),” Sensenig added, pointing out that the show is timed to music.

Scout pack carries on tradition
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn May 18, members of Paradise Area Scouts BSA Pack and Troop 28 gathered at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Members of the group have now been meeting there several days prior to Memorial
Day for 25 years.
Eight Cub Scouts and six Boy Scouts were at the church cemetery to make the effort to replace flags on the graves of veterans interred there. As he does each year, Scoutmaster Duane Gregg spoke to participants about the significance of the task ahead.
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he
said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community. “This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.

“J.C. Walker & Son was the longest locally owned and operated business in Gap, PA.”
So begins the story of the J.C. Walker & Son feed mill on Pequea Avenue in Gap as written by Susan Walker Hedden, whose family history supplied most of the information here.
The Walker family was known for its agricultural interest and expertise.
Walker Mill
In the mid-1600s, John Walker worked the family land in County Somerset, England. It was he who introduced the system of fallowing to his community. Fallowing is letting the soil rest and rejuvenate between plantings.
“He set an example of superior farm culture for his neighbors,” Hedden stated.
Lewis Walker, John’s descendant, was disowned by his family for becoming a Quaker. Around 1701, William Penn sold him 500 acres in the New World.
Several generations continued the superior
care of that land. Wheat farms were in abundance; gristmills (grinding mills) operated on every running stream. This abundance of food created many processed products as well. From the 1720s until the late 1800s, Pennsylvania led the colonies, then the states, in the production of marketable food.
Joseph “J.C.” Walker, born in 1832 in the U.S., “was thoroughly schooled in the science of agriculture,” according to Hedden. With his ancestral familiarity of farming and his own love of scientific

Andrea Keys, chair commissioner, said that in addition to replacing flags provided by the Lancaster County Veterans Department, the Scouts replaced service markers as needed and straightened up the cemetery by picking up trash. The Scouts completed the same tasks at six additional Pequea Valley cemeteries, working from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to place 400 flags.
Boy Scouts who were involved in the annual opportunity to serve were Kyle Flaim, Logan Fieldsa, Brett Sassaman, Gabriel Brombach, DJ Mewhort, and Stryker Hume. Cub Scouts who took part were Oliver Thompson, Nicholas Thompson, Preston Harrington, Jason Petrow, Henry Gates, Chase Farra,
Liam Hume, and Isaiah Wenrich.
The Scouts also take part in the local Wreaths Across America effort. Keys said that she loves the sense of community and chance to work together that the activity offers.

Rock Ford adds wardrobe to its collection
Historic Rock Ford has received a gift of a circa 1750 Lancaster County schrank, or wardrobe. This item was received from Sabrina duPont-Langenegger, the daughter and sole heir of William K. duPont, who died in 2020.
The Queen Anne schrank, featuring a unique bonnet top, stands at nearly 9 feet high and 6 feet wide. It represents a German-trained emigre craftsman’s masterful traditional Continental marquetry work. The exquisite inlays, featuring scorching and line engraving, demonstrate a high level of detail and shading, particularly in the flowers and compass stars adorning the paneled doors. American walnut was used for both primary
and secondary wood.
The schrank is well preserved for its age. It features a majority of its original wrought iron hardware, and the pulls are nearly identical to a pair of wrought iron pulls made in Chester County that are now in the Titus C. Geesey Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The turned feet, top central section of the cornice molding, and keystone are the only noted restorations.
The schrank is on display in the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decoratives Arts, which is housed on the second floor of the 18th-century bank barn at Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.
A 1750 Lancaster County schrank was gifted to Historic Rock Ford.
Historic Rock Ford consists of the Snyder Gallery and the circa 1794 General Edward Hand Mansion, and the site is open from April through October. Admission information may be found at www .HistoricRockFord.org.

and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’
groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230-mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eightday, 350-mile route from
northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally developed bicycling skills curriculum. We’ve spent six months writing our own curriculum, and this will help us provide more structure to the cycling skills we teach.”
Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.
“It’s common for a lot of teens to feel unseen in their school environment,” he said. “They are flourishing in Lifecycles.”

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) recently placed 35 educational kiosks in schools and local organizations throughout the county. The kiosks provide students, job seekers, and other community members with access to information about career pathways, training programs, and career opportunities within the county

with local businesses.
The kiosks are placed in strategic locations, including 27 public and private high schools, community services locations, public libraries, and the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County.
The LCWDB partnered with the Lancaster Chamber to host ribbon-cutting events during the week on May 7 at various locations.
The kiosks feature a variety of interactive features, including a career assessment tool to help users identify their interests and skills, information about in-demand jobs and industries in Lancaster County, a directory of training programs and educational institutions, a job board with listings for open positions, and connection to the Inspire platform where students and businesses can engage on career exploration opportunities.
The LCWDB will also provide training to school staff members and community partners on how to use the educational kiosks. The goal is to make the kiosks a valuable resource for all Lancaster County residents who are seeking information about career and workforce development opportunities. The content on the kiosk will also be accessible through the Career Ready Lancaster! website at www .careerreadylancaster.com.

agriculture, he was now living in a farmer’s heaven. He studied the mercantile business, which is the knowledge of finance and marketing, and, in 1857, settled in Gap. He built his own granary, a building to store threshed grain. J.C.’s knowledge, experience, calculated risk and tireless determination were the foundation for the future J.C. Walker & Son.
He soon reaped the benefits of grinding local farmers’ grain. He then added other products to his store, including coal. Before the railroad line was built, Conestoga wagons trucked coal and grain to the mill for resale to the community. When the railroad tracks were laid, the company built a “tail,” which is a siding that enabled offloading of products without tying up the main tracks. This led to tracks at the mill site, improving the sales diversity.
J.C. began taking orders for lumber, salt, shingles, seed, sand and farm prod -
ucts. Further innovations included delivery of purchased goods. Soon he built sheds to store those products for sale to places distant from Gap. Lancaster County products began to find their way to as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York and the Caribbean.
J.C. Walker had vision. He found opportunities to enhance his family’s life and those he served. He was a successful risktaker. Future generations
were more cautious, preferring to follow the flow of commerce rather than experiment with new ideas in farming or retail pursuits. The suburbanization of Lancaster County in general and advancement of the trucking industry in particular aided in the slow loss of revenue. The mill, like most of the mills in the township, finally closed in 1993.
Since 1997, Gap has been lucky to have Sam Stoltzfus care enough
SINGING SPRING FOODS
for historic businesses to preserve the old mill’s wooden beams and the stairs to the cupola, while creating an energetic business dealing with today’s outdoor recreation trends.
LanChester Grill & Hearth has ensured that the old “mill” appearance remains a stable presence in Gap and Salisbury Township. Stoltzfus offers tours of the mill by appointment.
J.C. would be proud to have his business legacy so well repeated.
