The Factory to host Lunch & Learns

When the Building Braves program, housed in The Factory Ministries, first held Lunch & Learns in 2022, the goal was to provide activities, enrichment, and lunch for Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students over the summer months.

Heritage Days planned

Mike Sensenig, one of the organizers of Heritage Days in Intercourse, a two-day celebration held at the Intercourse Community Park, noted that although planners try to include both traditional and new activities that attendees will like, just seeing friends and neighbors is a huge draw. “A lot of people just want the opportunity to come and socialize,” Sensenig said.

This year’s Heritage Days celebration will be held in the park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17. On June 16, activities will begin at 5 p.m., and on June 17, the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast for purchase will kick off the day at 6:30 a.m.

The Intercourse Library will hold activities for children beginning at 5:30 p.m. on June 16. A

bounce house, barrel train rides, and a pedal tractor pull will also be available for children to enjoy.

Those who enjoy court sports may want to try their hands at pickleball. “We have new pickleball courts,” said Sensenig, who noted that a person knowledgeable about pickleball will be at the courts to offer free instruction to those who bring their own paddles and sign up to play.

Court times will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 16. On June 17, times will be 10 to 11:30 a.m., 2 to 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Sensenig pointed out that the trivia contest, which will be held in the food tent on June 16 beginning at 7:30 p.m., was new in 2022.

“That will be fun,” he said. “It was a lot of fun last year.” The popular volleyball tournament will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on June 16 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 17.

“Volleyball is big,” said Sensenig. “That (competition) brings so much energy to the event.” This will be the second year for the cornhole competition. This year, The Factory Ministries will be organizing that event, and an $800 grand prize will be offered to the victors. Readers may register for that contest at www.thefactoryministries.com. Hands-on demonstrations have been a traditional part of Heritage Days.

Horseshoeing demonstrations have been held in the past. This year, Jeff Long will demonstrate making horseradish. The Intercourse Fire Company will hold a demonstration involving a fire truck in the afternoon on June 17.

The food showcase, billed as “a Lancaster County flavor fest,” will highlight area restaurants. New additions this year will include Dienner’s Country Restaurant,

which will have a stand offering a meal, and the Village Café from Intercourse.

The observance of Heritage Days has always included a variety of entertainment. New this year will be the Ironwood Drive Band, a country gospel music group, which will play on June 16 at 6:30 p.m. “That’s a little different (from the group we had in the past),” said Sensenig. June 17 entertainment will include the Terry G. Show at 3 p.m. “Terry G. plays 1960s music,” said Sensenig of the musician who will appear at the event for the fifth time.

“He does a great show.” The Churchmen will be back to perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on June 17, and the concert will be followed by a fireworks display beginning at dusk.

Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.intercourse heritagedays.com. Those with specific questions may call 717768-8585.

That goal remains the same for the summer of 2023, with Lunch & Learns planned in the Paradise Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville, on Wednesdays, July 5, 12, 19, and 26. Each program will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Children may enjoy their lunch in the park or take it home. Parent or caregiver supervision is required for children to take part. Lunches may be taken home to siblings who cannot attend. Lunches will consist of a variety of food items, including sandwiches, crackers, cheese, meat, vegetables, and snacks. An advocate from The Factory will be present so that families that have a further need for food may connect with resources and begin to utilize The Factory Market to help meet that need.

As in 2022, the idea behind Lunch & Learns is for children to stay and take part in activities, which, according to Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy, will include group games, STEM activities, reading enrichment, crafts, gross motor activities, and a read-aloud time. The Intercourse Library will take part one week. While the focus of activities will be on the elementary-age students, any student from birth to age 18 is welcome. Organizers are requesting that families wishing to attend register beforehand at https://tinyurl.com/23muf8dm.

Serving the community

Building a deck, repairing a porch and redoing a bathroom floor were just some of the projects completed recently by volunteers with Servants Inc., a nonprofit ministry that helps homeowners in need with home repairs and construction projects.

The work was completed during a mini work camp that ran from April 27 through 29 as part of a new initiative called ReNew Lancaster.

The host site for the program was St. John’s Center United Church of Christ in East Earl. Each morning of the camp began at the church, where volunteers and Servants Inc. staff members enjoyed breakfast prepared by church members and a devotional. Participants also received a packed lunch and picked up tools and materials before heading to their assigned work sites.

The work camp concluded with a celebration dinner for all volunteers and homeowners on April 29.

About 20 volunteers completed the work. Participants were mostly from New Holland and East Earl, as well from the York area, where Servants Inc. is based. “This particular group (included) a lot of retired individuals who wanted to serve and give back,” said John Feldmann, director of volunteer engagement for Servants Inc.

As part of the ministry, homeowners looking to have repairs done are asked to apply to receive assistance.

“People reach out to us about repair needs in their homes and we go out to their homes to see if we can help or assist them with volunteers,” said Feldmann. “Once we determine that we can (help), we put them on a waiting list.”

The ministry serves senior citizens, single parents and disabled homeowners. “The majority of clients we work with - about 80% - are older adults, most of whom are on a fixed income and not able to afford to hire a contractor to come and do their work for them,” noted Feldmann.

The organization is always in need of additional volunteers. “We have an application and liability release that volunteers need to fill out,” explained Feldmann. “We have project managers that

lead the project (by) helping guide (less-experienced) volunteers. We do our best to pair volunteers with projects they are capable of doing or have adequate leadership on-site.”

A highlight of the ministry is volunteer interactions with the homeowners. “We are trying to build relationships with people. We encourage volunteers and homeowners to get together and connect,” Feldmann said. “(During the mini work camp), two or three of the homeowners had great conversations with the team.”

In addition to its home repair services, Servants Inc. sends recovery teams to areas of the United States hit by natural disasters. It also sponsors international trips

where volunteers work with established missionaries and local leaders. The mission of Servants Inc. is “to share God’s love through acts of service.”

Lunch & Learns

A special Back-to-School Extravaganza is planned to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “That is going to look a little bit different this year,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning with PVSD. Eckert explained that a Salisbury Elementary employee, who is also a PVSD parent, suggested incorporating a giveaway of clothing for children who have more of a need for those types of items into the backto-school event, which was first held as the final Lunch & Learn in 2022. “We have been working with (that parent) and a few others in planning this back-to-school event,” said Eckert, who noted that clothing items, shoes, coats, and back-to-school supplies will all be part of this year’s event. “Families can come and do a whole back-to-school (shopping experience),” she noted.

Questions about Lunch & Learns or the Back-to-School Extravaganza should be directed to Eckert at Lisa_eckert@pequeavalley.org or 717-381-5020 or to Beiler at karla@thefactoryministries.com or 717-687-9594, ext. 206.

Project to benefit adoption effort and local widow

Both Hands has announced a fundraiser to help offset the costs of an adoption while also aiding a local widow.

With assistance from Both Hands, Nadon and Christi Zook are coordinating a day of service at the home of Ms. Elizabeth of Strasburg.

Ms. Elizabeth, 82, had hip surgery in October 2022 and currently needs assistance with home maintenance and improvements, including landscaping. The Zooks and a team of volunteers will work at her home on Saturday, June 17.

Just as participants in a fundraiser 5K race request donations in support of their event, the Zooks will seek sponsorships in advance of their day of service. The Zooks are pursuing domestic infant adoption and are working with multiple agencies across the United States.

To donate to the Zooks’ service project, contact Christi at 717-606-6952.

Both Hands’ mission is “to serve orphans, widows and

adoptive families.” The organization’s name refers to the image of one hand for the widow and one hand for the orphan. Both Hands helps families fundraise for their adoptions by coordinating service projects benefiting widows; proceeds go toward the adoptions. Both Hands receives fundraising support for its operating expenses

through private donors, so no funds raised by a family and its team of volunteers are deducted for Both Hands’ administrative costs. Since 2008, Both Hands projects have raised over $16 million for adoptions and orphan care and have served more than 1,300 widows.

Local nonprofits featured at open house

Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) hosted an open house on May 6 from noon to 3:30 p.m. at its facility at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, near Leola. This event, sponsored by Scenic View Roofing and Primitives by Kathy, welcomed over 250 community members for tours, family games with prizes, and meet-and-greets with four horses that are involved with the therapeutic programs of GMTRC. Attendees were also able to speak with representatives from four partner organizationsFitness 4 Focus, Aaron’s Acres, Kathy’s Circle of Friends, and United Disability Services (UDS). GMTRC executive director Jennifer Rummel noted that these organizations serve family members and caregivers of those with special needs.

For over 40 years, GMTRC has offered therapeutic riding lessons and equine-assisted therapeutic activities to children and adults with special needs with the help of 11 specially trained horses and ponies. GMTRC also provides specialized group programming, including Silver Saddles and Heroes and Horses. Silver Saddles is a four-week program designed for individuals age 55 and up looking to enhance physical, intellectual,

and personal growth, as well as facilitate positive community connections. Heroes and Horses, a new program funded by a grant and a partnership with Millersville University, will provide no-cost intervention to 40 medical professionals and first responders who experience ongoing mental health issues as a result of their COVID-19 experiences. GMTRC also partners with Aaron’s Acres every summer to offer campers a unique

hands-on learning experience. Through this partnership, Aaron’s Acres campers will visit GMTRC six times this summer to ride the therapeutic horses, engage in sensory processing activities, learn about barn work and equine care, and lead a horse through an obstacle course.

The Country Gardeners Club of Eastern Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland.

The program will be “Keys to Successful Composting” by Colleen Emmerling, a Penn State Master Gardener. Composting is imitating and managing the slow, natural process of decomposition of organic materials. It is a simple process that people may employ to help reduce food waste and trash going to landfills as well as to improve garden soil. Attendees will learn the basics about decomposing, how to get started, what can and

cannot be composted, and some troubleshooting tips.

Emmerling has been a Penn State Extension Master Gardener in Lancaster County since 2020. A former estimator for commercial print, she enjoys tackling gardening challenges in her current shade-dominant property. Her interest in hobby gardening began with a part-time job in perennials at Funk’s Farm Market, where she developed the desire to be a good steward of the land.

A guest fee will be charged. For more information, contact Joanne Greaser at 717-572-1074.

Gala to celebrate strides being made against human trafficking

When there’s much work to be done, it can be overwhelming, and it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the work that has already been performed. That’s why it’s important to periodically take a step back, take stock and celebrate progress.

Hope. Inspire. Love. is cele-

brating seven years of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation. But in no way does that mean that the faith-centered nonprofit is satisfied or that its mission is complete.

On Saturday, June 24, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, Hope. Inspire. Love. will present its inaugural Hope for Freedom

Gala. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the gala program will commence at 6 p.m.

While the festive atmosphere promises to assure attendees a good time, the Hope for Freedom Gala will also serve as an educational tool for Hope. Inspire. Love.’s mission and the depth of the human trafficking problem locally.

“It’s a fundraiser to share and celebrate the work that’s already been done,” said Amy Thurston, CEO and president of Hope. Inspire. Love. “People in our community have heard about our work, and they’re supporting the mission. Local businesses see the work we’re doing, and they want to get behind it. It makes this event more special.”

The Hope for Freedom Gala will feature hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, live music, a spoken word performance and a live painting of an artist’s interpretation of hope, as well as dinner. Thurston said that over 100 supporters have already registered for the event and that Hope. Inspire. Love. is hoping for another 100 attendees.

The goal is to raise $35,000 in donations to provide trauma-informed mentorship to survivors of sex trafficking, prevention and education initiatives and outreach and awareness events.

“Human trafficking is the business of stealing freedom for profit,” said Thurston. “There’s labor trafficking and sex trafficking. It involves deceptions and lies and physical violence. It’s that control and manipulation piece.”

Thurston said that human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the

United States and that it generates an estimated $150.2 billion annually. She also said Pennsylvania reported the 15th-most human trafficking cases among states in the country last year.

“It’s a larger problem than people realize,” said Thurston. “Lancaster has one of the highest rates of reported trafficking. We don’t know the signs and what this thing looks like. It affects more women than men, and a lot of women don’t self-identify because they don’t realize what it is.”

Founded in 2017, Hope. Inspire. Love. combats human trafficking and sexual exploitation through awareness, preventative education and mentorship. In addition to Lancaster County, Hope. Inspire. Love. operates in Philadelphia, Norristown, Reading, York and Lebanon.

“Our organization exists because of a train ride to Philadelphia,” said Thurston. “My husband, (Steve), saw a younger woman with an older man. As he began to observe them, he could tell it wasn’t a father-daughter relationship. When he looked into her eyes, he saw her darkness. The gentleman saw (him watching), grabbed her and took her off the train. My husband froze and didn’t do anything.”

“But when he came home and told me what he saw, he said he couldn’t do nothing,” continued Thurston. “William Wilberforce said, ‘You can choose to look the other way, but never again can you say that you never knew.’”

Aaron’s Acres receives grant

Lancaster County Women for Good held its Spring Gather & Grant on May 10 at Lancaster’s Southern Market. At the event, members voted on and granted the funds they raised as a group over the preceding three months.

Lancaster County Women for Good is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations that serve the local community. Members nominated Aaron’s Acres, Second Grace Inc., and Arch Street Center as the three nonprofit finalists. Representatives from each organization gave a short presentation to the group, followed by a question-and-

answer time. Members voted on which of the finalists would receive the $5,500 grant at the end of the event.

The grant recipient, Aaron’s Acres, serves children and young adults with disabilities by providing them with opportunities to participate in innovative and unique social and recreational programs in an atmosphere of acceptance that embraces the child and family. Among Aaron’s Acres’ programs is a summer camp program for people ages 5 to 21.

A fast-growing female collective giving group with a focus on the Lancaster County

region, Lancaster County Women for Good seeks to help local women build connections and enrich their professional and personal lives while doing good for the greater community. The group’s more than 270 members come together once every quarter to network, donate, learn about local nonprofits, and vote on which ones to support together. The organization is an official Grapevine giving circle as part of a nationwide movement to diversify and democratize philanthropy. To learn more, visit www.lanco womenforgood.com.

The app is part of SNHA’s ongoing mission to connect visitors to the outdoor recreation amenities along the Susquehanna River. In the app, trail access areas, parking information, restroom facilities, and heritage sites are listed individually for major regional trails and nature preserves. The app also allows Susquehanna NHA to send notifications about trail updates or construction. Users can also check to see if the James D. The application has event and contact information for Susquehanna NHA to better connect its community to riverfront initiatives. Another feature of the app allows users to submit trail maintenance requests. Trail users can submit the trail name, the mile marker, and a photo of the issue. This interactive component is designed to help trail managers keep local trails clear and accessible.

For links directly to the apps on the App Store and Google Play, visit www.susqnha.org and click Maps & Guides.

The SNHA connects the people and communities of Lancaster and York counties to one another and to the nation through stories about the area. The organization aims to welcome visitors, cultivate partnerships, and nurture a strong regional identity.
