MSpecial Needs Benefit Auction scheduled in Ronks
ervin Beiler, who has been attending the Sunny Sunbeam Center, located south of Route 30, for about 10 years, loves to greet visitors with the words, “Welcome to Sunny Sunbeam Center.” Beiler is the unofficial assistant to teacher Esther King, and he hurried to help answer questions for this article on the upcoming fundraiser that helps support Sunny Sunbeam and seven other area centers for members of the Plain community with special needs.
The 18th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 10 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Beiler noted that two of the 28 Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.
Sunny Sunbeam attendees visit the center on Mondays and Wednesdays over the summer, and three days a week during the other seasons. Some days lunch is prepared at the center, and other days participants bring their own lunches. According to King, participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible, praying, and singing.
Beiler noted that lessons are part
of each morning session, featuring arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English, before lunch at 11:30 a.m. After lunch, there is a story time,
followed by projects to be worked on. King said a group will focus on packaging poly clothespins, and other projects include making
keychains with beads and, in the summer, mowing the yard. Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets,

Paradise Lions present first Skip Lichty Scholarship
BY ANN MEAD ASH
The Paradise Township Lions Club has a long tradition of giving a scholarship to a Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) graduating senior, but in 2024, for the first time, the scholarship is named after a longtime member. “This year, our award was renamed to the Skip Lichty Memorial Scholarship. (It is) presented by the Paradise Township Lions Club to honor a Lion who embodied the spirit of ‘We Serve’ (the Lions Club’s motto) over his
lifetime,” announced Paradise Lion’s president Anita Fieldsa at the May 21 senior awards ceremony held at PVHS. Lichty was a teacher and substitute in the Pequea Valley School District. When Lichty died in November of 2023, he had been a Lion for more than 50 years. “(As a Lion, Lichty spent) many decades serving his community and continually displaying a commitment to the betterment of our area,” Fieldsa said.
The 2024 recipient of the scholarship was Grant Shaubach. The

Pequea Valley (PV) High School student-athletes who are part of a newly formed track and field co-op with Lancaster Mennonite School participated in the PIAA District III Championships track and field event held in May at Shippensburg University.
PV students who excelled and received medals at the competition included Jonah Zink, who placed eighth in the 1,600-meter; Aubrey Ressler, who placed sixth in the 4x800 relay and sixth in the
3,200 meter; and Jorja Eby, who placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles. Caleigh Vincent placed sixth in the 4x800 relay; sixth in the 1,600 meter; and fourth in the 3,200 meter.
According to head coach Keith Andrew, the partnership between the two schools this past season was a great success, allowing both high school and middle school teams from PV to compete in track and field for the first time.

recent PVHS graduate plans to attend Millersville University in the fall to pursue a degree in finance. Shaubach’s goal is to become a personal financial adviser.
“Grant’s application and essay demonstrated an awareness of what community service means, how he gives back today, and how he hopes to in the future,” said Fieldsa when she presented the award.
Applications for the scholarship are due by early May each year. Students who apply must have completed community service, taken part in school activities, and displayed leadership qualities. Essays on the subjects of community service and the Paradise Township Lions Club, along with recommendations from a teacher and community leaders are required.
The $1,500 scholarship is awarded to a PVHS graduating senior who plans to attend an accredited postsecondary program to pursue a certificate, twoyear degree, or four-year degree.
The club tradition of giving an award to a PVHS senior dates back to September of 1929 when a decision was made to give an honor student a $20 gold piece at graduation. In 1931, the giving of the gold piece was discontinued. In 2014, the tradition was reinstated when a student received a $1,000 scholarship at the school’s senior banquet.
To fund the scholarship, club members organize concession stands at the Farm and Home Center and for events held at the Solanco Fairgrounds.
“In the winter, we have a soup and sandwich sale in Paradise,” said Fieldsa, who noted that at Solanco the club serves egg sandwiches, doughnuts, coffee, and tea for breakfast. “At lunchtime, we sell our Lions Club of Paradise world-famous chicken corn soup,” said Fieldsa. “People love it and ask for it. We pretty much always sell out of it.” Fieldsa said that hamburgers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese sandwiches are also sold.
Fieldsa noted that Lichty was in charge of the concessions and mentored the members who have taken the reins to work the stands to raise funds.
Readers who would like to learn more about the club may search for “Paradise Township Lions Club” on Facebook.

join) a co-op, where they basically become a member of another school’s track team. In this case it was Lancaster Mennonite,” he explained.
Track practices were held at Lancaster Mennonite, and the PV School District provided buses to transport the athletes.
their program so that’s how the co-op formed. It was good for both programs. Both programs benefited.”
Andrew noted that the effort to form a PV track team actually began the previous spring. “Last year, I had four athletes that ran as independent PV runners, meaning they ran under the name of PV, but we had to find a track to practice. We practiced late in the evening after Lancaster Mennonite finished their practice,” he said, noting that team practices were also held at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. “There were some that wanted to do it again this year, and we were looking for a co-op so it would be more competitive. Lancaster Mennonite’s program had dwindled in numbers, so they were looking to rebuild
Andrew said that prior to the formation of the co-op, it had to be approved by both schools, the District 3 committee and the PIAA, adding that he was pleased at the success of the effort this past year. “The high school students all medaled in at least one of their events at the district championship,” he said. “It was neat to see all that progress.”
He said he was also impressed with the students’ hard work and commitment, which led to their success at districts. “Jorja (had never considered track and field), and finally I said after one of her practices, ‘You might want to think about trying the hurdles,’ so I got her into the 300-meter hurdles,” said Andrew. “Caleigh and Aubrey
medaled this year. You need four girls for a relay team, and they excelled and ran their fastest event times this year. Jonah, who just started running last fall, really excelled. His times were hugely impressive.”
Looking ahead, Andrew hopes to add even more track and field participants next spring. “Our goal is to increase our numbers,” he said, noting that 18 students from PV middle and high schools participated last year. “We would like to double that number.”
Although PV High School has a cross-country program, he said that students may not be aware that track and field competitions involve more than running. “There are jumping and throwing events. We can get football players involved in throwing and soccer players in the short sprints,” Andrew stated. “(PV students) have never been exposed to (track and field). With the current athletes as ambassadors, we can recruit more and get greater numbers - numbers that can be competitive.”

Cruise on in
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ray Harnish has been overseeing the Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) summer car cruise for about 20 years now. “We got close to 200 cars some years,” recalled Harnish, who noted that this year’s show will be held in the evening rather than the afternoon.
The 21st annual event will close Main Street from Kinzer Avenue to Brimmer Avenue, beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The cruise is open to cars, motorcycles, tractors, and more. There is no preregistration to participate, as registration will only be available on the day of the cruise. Cars will be parked in the area starting at 4 p.m.
The first 50 participants who register vehicles will receive free T-shirts, and the first 100 registrants will receive free dash plaques. Participants will also have opportunities to win door prizes donated by local businesses, including a grand prize of $500 discount off the purchase of a new car or truck from a local dealership or $250 in cash. During the car show, local firefighters will select vehicles to receive awards in categories such as firefighters’ choice and chief’s choice.
Musical entertainment at the cruise will be provided by The Nomads. The band will play from 4 to 8 p.m., when the car show ends.
Food trucks located on-site will include Hen
House Grilling, which will offer grilled meats and Lickity Split offering ice cream treats for purchase. In addition, the GSFR kitchen will be open with food items for sale.
Funds raised by the
event will benefit GSFR, an all-volunteer firefighting and rescue force serving the greater New Holland area. Harnish pointed out theat GSFR is in the process of planning a new building

Sadsbury Friends talk to detail the life of escaped slave
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Sadsbury Friends Meeting, a Quaker house of worship, has held a number of special activities this year in observance of its 300th anniversary.
The next scheduled event will be a talk by Harold Finigan, titled “The Extraordinary Case of Allen Ricketts,” on Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House, 1089 Simmontown Road,
Gap. The event is free and open to the public.
Finigan will provide a historical account of an enslaved person, Allen Ricketts, who escaped slavery in the South and came North but was captured and sold back into slavery.
Ricketts finally escaped a second time with the help of Lancaster County Quakers, including members of Lampeter Friends Meeting in Bird-in-Hand. “Daniel Gibbs of Lampeter Meeting

is very well known in Lancaster County history for helping the slaves,” explained Sadsbury Friends Meeting member Connie Webster.
Ricketts is buried at Darby Friends Meeting in Delaware County. Finigan is a member of Darby Meeting and as such has done research on the individuals in its burial ground.
Sadsbury Friends Meeting opened its 300th anniversary year with a wedding re-enactment of Joseph Miller and
Jane Kirk, the first couple to be married at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1738.
In March, Finigan was the guest speaker, offering a talk about the Lenapi and Minquas Trail. Other anniversary events included a Peace Tea held in April.
Following the June talk, “Quakers in Two Centuries, Part 2” will be presented on Saturday, July 27, at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Brenda Walker Beadenkopf will present a program about her father,
