Special needs benefit auction planned

Each Tuesday, 15 men ranging in age from 19 to 75 gather at Caring Hearts, one of several centers in Lancaster County that serve members of the Plain community. On Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the converted barn where the group meets hums with activity.

According to Chris Glick, who, along with Sarah Glick, oversees Caring Hearts on those days, the men who participate spend time in worship, singing hymns, and hearing a Bible story. Work time includes counting out 100 screws and then transferring them to boxes. “We pack Tapcon screws for hardware stores and screws and small bolts in assortments,” said Chris, who noted the men also put washers on bolts and lags for swing set shops. At 11 a.m., the group stops for lunch, followed by some game time, which often includes cornhole. Work starts again at 1 p.m., and another break is offered at 1:30 p.m. “(The men) usually play a memory game then, which is good for the mind,” said Chris.

Caring Hearts and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Sunny Sunbeam, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults with special needs who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work.

Chris relayed that some of the men at Caring Hearts come from as far away as Holtwood and Maryland, and one comes from Lebanon.

To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly bringsomething, buy-something auction.

The 17th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 3, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Highlights of this year’s auction will include crafts, tools, sheds, and outdoor furniture. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic

with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, and a flag croquet set. Quilts will be sold at 4 p.m., and carriages, swing sets, and sheds will be sold beginning at 6 p.m.

WFCS to add grades nine and 10 this fall

Building on a successful 80-plus-year history and as a way to meet the needs of the community, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will add ninth and 10th grades this fall, and another grade level will be added each of the two years afterward. “In the 2025-26 school year, we will be able to say we offer classes for preschool through 12th grade,” said WFCS principal Heather Furlong.

Registration is currently underway for grades nine and 10, which will follow a traditional model, meeting in person on Mondays through Fridays. Like the other grades, classes will include art, music, physical education, Bible, Spanish and electives.

Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued

chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. See Special needs benefit auction pg 2

At Lancaster Science Factory, kids experiment in fun

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.

At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned.

This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.

Housed in a repurposed industrial building, the Lancaster Science

Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families.

“Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”

As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) plans for the 2023 season, organizers have lined up more than 20 concerts, with several musical acts that are new to the park venue. According to volunteer Sue Noll, performances will be held three times per week in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 19, show, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. The series will kick off with the New Holland Concert Band on Tuesday, July 4. The rain date for that event will be Wednesday, July 5. Performances will conclude with the annual Labor Day Fiddler’s Picnic on Monday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

tion. This year’s show will be held in the park on Saturday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Noll said organizers have lined up nearly 70 vendors for the rain-or-shine event. Among the vendors will be those selling crocheted items, jewelry, potted planters, wooden plaques, candles, glass garden art, handmade furniture, home décor, specialty soaps, pillows, paper crafts, wreaths, items for pets, leather crafts, ceramics, and two-dimensional fine art. Coordinators have scheduled Meet the Browns to sell breakfast and lunch items, and Lickity Split will sell ice cream on-site. “We also have a coffee vendor coming this year,” shared Noll. Concerts lined up for this summer will include Swing Street on Sunday, July 9; the country music of Nathan Merovich on Sunday, July 23; and Across the Tracks bluegrass on Sunday, July 30. Chris first became involved with Caring Hearts around 2012, serving as a substitute before taking over in late 2019. “I enjoy it,” he said. “You get attached to the guys.” Chris views his work as bringing purpose to the men. “I try to keep them occupied, and then they are happy,” he said. “It’s good for the mind to keep it occupied.”

Small ambulance company has BIG heart

“Our folks love giving back to the community,” said EMS Chief Darrell Fisher of New Holland Ambulance, which covers Leola in addition to the ELANCO area. “They may work in a hospital, but on their off time, they volunteer on our trucks.” Fisher noted that registered nurses and a nurse practitioner are

among the regular volunteers.

All the ambulance company volunteers were honored during the organization’s Family Safety Day on May 6 by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council with the Small EMS Agency of the Year award. Fisher explained that small agencies complete fewer than 5,000 calls per year. “It’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime achievement,” he said, noting that multiple nomination letters were sent on behalf of the company and that state representatives audited the organization’s response times to evaluate them for the prize. Fisher noted that currently, New Holland Ambulance has about 111 active volunteers and seven career staff members handling 10 calls a day between the two stations.

Another way that local volunteers serve is as instructors and evaluators for the emergency medical technician (EMT) certification program, which the organization holds yearly as part of its education institute. “We were accredited through the Pennsylvania Department of Health as our own training institute,” said Fisher. The application process opens in October, and the class runs from January to June on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. for a total of about 220 hours. “We get about 70 applications, and we can only accept 30,” said Fisher, who added that students from Fivepointville, White Horse, and Gordonville have taken the class and returned to serve their local ambulance companies.

Fisher pointed out that as part of the class, students join New Holland’s EMTs on the ambulances. “They are able to learn alongside providers and not just in the classroom,” he said, explaining that the goal is to recognize and stop immediate life threats, such as breathing problems or allergic reactions. He said EMTs work like detectives to discover the cause of a medical issue. To test students on whether they recognize symptoms, a written test is given along with 16 test-

ing stations where evaluators see if a student is proficient at recognizing and treating life threats. “(It’s about) recognizing that life threat as quickly as possible and trying to reverse that,” said Fisher. Students who successfully complete the program become Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMTs).

offers preschool through eighth grade, but a decision was made to add grades nine and 10. “Together the board and the administration heard the needs of our community,” said Furlong, explaining how the decision came about to offer the additional grades. “It has always been a vision and part of the strategic plan to open up a high school. God really opened the doors and encouraged us to make this happen for this fall.”

For the 2023-24 school year, the high school students will use classrooms in the existing space. “As the program continues to grow, we do have space we can grow into,” noted Furlong. “The gymnasium was built 15 years ago, so the (classroom) space is there; it just needs to be finished.”

The school has hired new high school teachers, as well as high school administrator Kendra Ridgway, who previously taught at WFCS. She will teach English for

grades nine and 10, and work as the coordinator of the high school program. “I’m glad to be back and really looking forward to teaching again,” said Ridgway.

Furlong said that WFCS is attractive to parents who are seeking a nurturing environment for their children. “We are relational. We partner with home, school and church to offer students a wellrounded Christian education,” she said, noting that the average class size is 18 students. “We infuse biblical principles in all aspects of our day and our curriculum. We have a specific Bible class each day and chapel services each week.”

“I think one of our strengths is small class sizes. It allows the teachers to be able to get to know the kids individually and their individual learning needs,” Ridgway added. “We are intentional about providing quality academics. Our goal is to make sure we are sending students out prepared for their future. From a spiritual aspect, high school is a very formative time for developing your faith and making it your own. We want to give a place for students to have space to grow in their faith and learn how to relate to the people around them.”

WFCS, located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available. For more information, visit www.wfcs.org. Parents and prospective students interested in setting up a tour of the school are asked to call the office at 610-593-5011.

“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s hands-on. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”

In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third were local residents.

Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations. The museum staff is made up of 10 full-time employees.

“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”

On both days, music will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. Daniel and Emma Glick will be featured on Friday night, and Aaron Stutzman will play bluegrass country gospel music on Saturday night. Attendees should bring lawn chairs.

The purpose of the tournament has always been to offset the medical bills of Romeo and others.

ing executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Science Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.

“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”
