Celebrating independence
Free concert planned
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Start with the New Holland Band playing traditional July Fourth tunes. Sprinkle with the melodic voices of Perfect Harmony. Blend in aerial displays provided by Schaefer Fireworks, and you will have a recipe for the first Celebrate America! event held at the Barn at Paradise Station.
The free community event, which will be held at 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks, will open at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, with a variety of food trucks on-site, including those selling coffee, pretzels, and ice cream. Wine and beer will be available for purchase from the Barn Bistro, and yard games will be arranged on the grounds of the venue for attendees to enjoy.
The music of the concert is designed to be a celebration of God and the blessings of American independence. The New
Holland Band performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Fred Hughes, who recently became the director of the New Holland Band, said that the two-hour concert will feature Perfect Harmony singing with the group. Perfect Harmony is a vocal trio featuring Kat Prickett, Sarah Poague, and Ric Zimmerman. “I have taken (Perfect Harmony’s) big patriotic numbers and scored the band to accompany them,” Hughes said. “(Members of Perfect Harmony) will also sing solo spots on (Great) American Songbook tunes, and the band will do some special numbers featuring sections of the band.”
Hughes noted that some Broadway tunes will be mixed into the presentation, leading up to the “1812 Overture,” which will accompany the beginning of the fireworks at dusk. After the fireworks come in at the appropriate time during the “1812 Overture,”

Shortly after Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students attended their last day of the 2023-24 school year, 16 elementary-age children were in the Braves Learning Center, located in The Factory Ministries, to learn about flowers and plants.
On June 5, Karla Beiler, director of PV elementary advocacy with The Factory, instructed the first- through fourth-grade boys and girls gathered around her in how to create a bouquet. “Choose two or three pieces of greenery,” said Beiler, who selected some mint to add a scent to her bouquet. Beiler explained that students could have a hydrangea, another flower, and a few pieces of lavender in a bouquet they could then secure with a ribbon. “You might need a friend to (help) tie it together,”

Games, social time, biblical teaching, discussion groups and mentorships for students in grades six to 12 can all be found in one place - the Twentyfourseven (TFS) youth group offered by Freedom Life Church in Christiana.
TFS meets at the church on Wednesdays. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The group meets year-round, but it
held its summer kickoff celebration on June 19.
“(Youths) can come any Wednesday throughout the year,” said Freedom Life youth pastor Caleb Stevenson. “The summer is a great time because students are out of school and not doing a whole lot.”
Each session opens with social time and games, followed by a breakout of small groups based on age and gender. “(Beginning at 6:30 p.m.), it’s a lot of ‘hanging out’ time with basketball, nine

Bird-in-Hand Family Inn holds barn raising
A barn raising took place at the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn on June 4 and 5. The new structure will house the offices and rooms damaged in a December 2023 fire.
Beechdale Builders coordinated the barn raising on the grounds of the hotel, framing the building, setting up the trusses and
putting the roof on during the event.
Following the fire, the registration desk was temporarily relocated to another of the resort’s guest buildings. The new building at the front of the property will house the registration desk, the sales office and seven guest rooms, including the Schoolhouse Suite
and a new Barn Suite. Barn raisings have long been a tradition in Lancaster County, where the Amish community pulls together to build or rebuild structures damaged by fire.
According to John E. Smucker II, the Bird-inHand Corporation’s president and chief executive officer, the Smucker family has hosted and fed travelers to Bird-in-Hand for four generations. The Family Inn is located on part of the Smucker homestead, which has been in the family since 1911.
The Lancaster City & County Medical Society Foundation has opened its application process for scholarships to be awarded for the 202425 academic year. To be eligible, a student must be a Lancaster County resident and be accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited

she noted. “And you made a really cute little bouquet,” she said displaying her finished creation. One by one the students lined up at the flower bar to create their own unique bouquets.
The demonstration was part of Brave Kids Summer Camps, which are held for three days each week for six weeks in June, July, and August. Children who are in first through sixth grades and live in PVSD are welcome to attend up to two weeks of camp for free. During some weeks, both morning and afternoon sessions are held with up to 18 students per session. Registration for summer 2024 camps are filled.
Each week of camp has a theme. The bouquet making was part of art and garden week. This year’s
camp themes included cooking and baking, animal adventures week, and outdoor explorer week. “A Little Love Farm from Gap will be here for animal adventures week,” noted Beiler, who added that That Fish Place - That Pet Place will also bring fish during the week.
Beiler pointed out that each day includes a lesson that enhances the activity.
“We typically do a story,” she shared, noting that for art and garden week she taught about how important it is to bring together a variety of flowers to make a bouquet beautiful. As in the past, Beiler affirmed that camp activities include an academic facet such as components of literacy and math. Snacks and games in the gym are included in the agenda.
Gabriel, who will attend fourth grade in the fall, said that it was his first year coming to camp. He was especially intrigued by the horticultural theme. “I

like the different gardening activities,” he shared. “I like to learn more about plants, and I will get my own plant too.” Beiler explained that students could take home a tomato or pepper plant provided by Ken’s Gardens.
Ellie, who is going into third grade, noted that it was her first camp experience as well, but she could not narrow down which activities she preferred. “I like that camp is fun,” she stated. “Everything is fun.” More information about Factory programs for children may be found at https://thefactorymini stries.com/what-we -do/#early-learning.

square and board games, and we have opportunities for students to connect with each other and the leaders,” Stevenson explained. “Once our program begins at 7 p.m., we always have a fun game that we play, and we have a time of worship, and we always have a time with our small groups.”
He said classes are offered to help students read and understand the Bible. “We teach the Bible to them on their level, but we don’t ‘dumb it down,’” Stevenson noted. “We believe that young people can read and comprehend the Bible and that encouraging words from the Bible can impact their lives and their worlds.”
Each session closes with a prayer and a challenge. “We like to give students a call to action - to apply what they learned that night to their lives,” said Stevenson. The TFS session runs until 8:30 p.m., but the program often continues after that with additional activities. “We will have
fun things throughout this summer for after the program,” Stevenson stated. “We will make s’mores over a fire pit, or we will have a water slide or an ice cream bar. It gives more of an opportunity for students to connect with each other.”
Youths may drop in a TFS meeting any Wednesday. No preregistration is required, although attendees are asked to check in upon arrival. “If someone comes for the first time, we have them check in and collect information,” Stevenson noted. “We do encourage parents to come in and meet us. We love to meet parents and partner with parents. A parent is the most influential person in a student’s life, and we want to build relationships with them.”
Youth group staff members are also available to help parents with issues they may be encountering with their children. “We try to create better alternatives for (youths) and their families,” said Stevenson. “Our specialty is teenagers and the teenage culture, so we try to help parents as much as we can with that.”
Most of the students who attend the TFS youth group are from Freedom Life, but young people from Octorara and neighboring school districts also attend.
“We have a lot of students who don’t come from a church background and begin coming to youth group and throughout time they become Christian and they eventually come to our church as well,” Stevenson shared. “We consistently have around 100 students from grades six to 12 on a weekly basis. We also have a consistent team of over 25 adult volunteers that are there every week as well.”
He said that the trained group leaders are fully vetted to work with young people and are all members of Freedom Life. “We have a 1-to-4 or 1-to-6 ratio of adults to students,” he noted. “All the adults are from our church and (are) trusted to be mentors for teenagers in the community.”
leaders with them from grade six to all the way to 12th grade. We saw these guys come in as young middle-schoolers and do well not only as students of the youth group but leaders as well. They stepped up as examples for the younger students.”
He added that the Twentyfourseven group got its name because the church wants to see all youths become 24/7 followers of Jesus. “That’s our hope. We mark our success when students continue to follow Jesus after high school and into the workplace,” he said. “For example, we just graduated about eight senior guys, and they had the same two youth
In fact, Stevenson himself was a member of the youth group. “I have been youth pastor for almost nine years, and before that I was a volunteer with the group. I was a student (member of the youth group) for five years, so I have been a part of it almost 20 years,” he added.

Lancaster County Cruisers to host annual show
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Lancaster County Cruisers (LCC) will hold the group’s 24th annual car show at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, on Saturday, July 6. The rain-orshine event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will double as a celebration of the Willow Street Fire Company’s 100th anniversary and the first collaboration between the two organizations.
The show will feature sleek rides and snazzy automobiles of any make, model and year. LCC members and motorheads from all parts of Lancaster County are invited to participate in the event after making a suggested donation, and no preregistration will be required. Dash plaques will be offered to the first 200 attendees to register a vehicle. Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food trucks, and live music will be provided
by DJ Jeff Primaldi. The car show will also feature various door prizes that will include items donated by local businesses. Members of the Willow Street Fire Company will hold additional prize drawings throughout the day.
Guests are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to the event to benefit Willow Street Church’s food pantry.
Every year, LCC donates a portion of funds raised by the car show to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville to help sustain its many community services programs and food bank.
The 2024 LCC car show will feature a special appearance from a famous (and furry) fire safety advocate. Members of LCC will operate a booth to offer information on the club, which is open to members of the public who are interested in joining, whether they own a vehicle or not. The club will offer interested attendees

Lancaster County Cruisers and the Willow Street Fire Company invite the public to attend the annual car show.
“We’re not into taking points away if there’s a speck of mud on the rim or a tire that doesn’t match; it gives the little guy a chance.”
This year, the car show will be held in memory of former LCC vice president and event organizer Jack Parke, who died in March

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
