First “Mystery at the Library” planned

Following the end of COVID-19 restrictions, the Intercourse Library board reassessed its fundraising ideas. Board member Tammy McCauley remembered that some time back a board member had suggested a murder mystery event in the library. “The board members thought it would be fun, and community members are very interested,” said McCauley of response to the idea.

The result is that the first “Mystery at the Library” dinner and show will be held at Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, on Saturday, July 15, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will include a meal and an interactive “whodunit” mystery presented by Third Space Theatre.

A magical journey

Whenmagician Brett Myers was growing up in Chambersburg, he remembers his family visiting Lancaster County to attend presentations at Sight & Sound Theatre. In 2011, he and his wife, Labrina, moved to the area. For a time, the couple traveled doing magic shows in partnership with nonprofit organizations, but moving to the county made them consider producing a local show.

“We thought it would be a great place to learn and grow and develop as artists,” said Brett, who stopped traveling in 2015 and connected with a local theater to do a stationary show that allowed for illusions that are harder to do on the road. By 2018, he and Labrina had outgrown the theater space and began searching for something larger.

In 2019, the former Rainbow’s Comedy Playhouse became available. “We moved in on January 1, 2020, and we worked tirelessly for 10 weeks to renovate,” recalled Brett. The Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater was ready to open in March of 2020, but then COVID-19 restrictions hit. “We went into a holding pattern and officially opened July 1, 2020,” Brett said. The Magic & Wonder Mystery variety show has been running ever since.

About 10 years ago, Brett partnered with WJTL to give a magic show at the Junction Center as a fundraiser for HOPE International.

“(HOPE International is) an organization that makes poverty disappear,” said Brett. Magic & Wonder recently partnered with The Factory Ministries for a food drive that brought in more than 450 pounds

of food along with cash donations for The Factory Market food pantry. Area veterans have been the recipients of the theater’s generosity as well. “We are doing free dinners and shows for veterans and police officers,” said Brett of the special running from Friday, June 30, through Saturday, July 8. Interested veterans and police officers may call the box office at 717-323-3077 to learn about the special. “(At the show) they need to (present) identification that certifies they are an active or retired veteran or a police officer,” Brett noted.

In addition to the magic show, the theater has recently added Jukebox Jive running during 3 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through the end of October. “It’s not just a music show. It has a variety of circus arts woven throughout,” said Brett, who

noted that audience members will “experience the wonder decades of ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” “We take you to a soda pop shop. We go to the age of Aquarius, Woodstock, and the awesome ’80s,” said Brett, who noted that six vocalists and dancers from around the country will portray greasers, jocks, cheerleaders, and nerds in the two-hour show that includes the greatest hits from the aforementioned decades. “It celebrates the golden age of rock ’n’ roll, and it takes (audience members) on a stroll down memory lane.”

Dinners at the theater now include full-course meals with entrées, appetizers, and soup, and desserts.

More information about the theater, located at 3065 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may be found at www.magicandwondershow.com.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

The performance of “Mystery on Main” will follow the meal. The story will feature a “seemingly sweet Dairy Princess” and other “questionable” characters. “(The mystery) offers the opportunity to take part,” said McCauley. The format will allow guests a choice of activities, ranging from reading from an audience participation script and interrogating subjects to playing detective in the search for hidden clues to simply sitting back and enjoying the show. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” McCauley added.

Tickets to the show, which is appropriate for people age 8 and up, are limited. They may be purchased at www.intercourselib.org by clicking on the “Event Calendar” button or at the desk at the library.

Mennonite Life posts book auction

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual book auction on Friday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room and will feature a collection of rare and used books that will be up for bids.

Among the available books this year are several volumes that relate to local history and culture, such as Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia” in its original leather binding and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” (“Of the History of the Martyrs”) in its original vellum binding. “Opera Omnia” was written in 1681, and “Van de His-

torien der Martelaren” was published in 1722; both tomes were scribed in Dutch. Other books available to purchase will include “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth, “Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Burdge and Horst and an 1849 edition of “Martyr’s Mirror” by Thieleman J. van Braght.

Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.

PUBLIC AUCTION

4+ BR HOME w/DETACHED 2 CAR GARAGE/SHOP ON 1.02 ACRES AND PERSONAL PROPERTY PARKESBURG AREA

TUESDAY, JULY 11 • 5 P.M. (Personal Property sold immediately after Real Estate)

The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.

“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”

All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”

Focus on Firebirds and Camaros

Steve Loewen, one of the organizers of the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, always has a reason for choosing the theme of the show. For the 42nd annual event, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 9, beginning at 9 a.m., Loewen has chosen “Firebirds and Camaros.”

nized in 1982, Larry offered to sponsor a class of 1967 through 1969 Camaros and Firebirds. After Larry was killed in an auto accident in 2018, Loewen determined to make Firebirds and Camaros the theme in the near future. “To me, this is kind of a memorial tribute to Larry Denlinger for his tremendous help to me in the early days,” said Loewen. “He was one of the first guys to step up and sponsor (a class in the car show).”

Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards, along with the Best of Show and Spectator’s Choice awards, will be given to cars chosen by designated judges at 3:30 p.m.

In choosing the sporty sister cars, Loewen delved into New Holland history, his own life-changing accident in 1976, and the help of a friend and neighbor following that event. “I lived on West Main Street (diagonal) to Peifer Pontiac,” said Loewen, who noted that Peifer manager Larry Denlinger lived two houses west. When the accident left Loewen in a wheelchair, Larry, whose wife, Ann, had the maiden name Peifer, helped secure Loewen’s first wheelchair van. When the first car show was orga-

Loewen pointed out that 1967 is the first model year for both cars, and he noted that the style was developed to compete with the Ford Mustang. “Ford got the jump on GM when they came out with the Mustang (in 1964),” he said, adding that John DeLorean oversaw the birth of the Firebird. “The Trans Am Firebird had the giant bird on the hood,” he added.

As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 8. Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 9, cars will line up on the show field. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes.

Live musical presentations will be given by the Music on Main Combo Band at noon and the New Holland Swing Band at 1:30 p.m.

A variety of food items will be available for purchase beginning at

9 a.m. Food trucks that will sell items at the event will include Mr. Mini’s Tasty Donuts, Hen House Grilling & BBQ, D&B’z Foods, NiCE SiZE FRiES, and Lickity Split. The New Holland Band will coordinate a beverage stand.

In conjunction with the car show, the Friends of the ELANCO Library will hold a book sale at the park beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the show.

Car owners who have questions about the show may contact Loewen at loewen58@yahoo.com or call 717-413-6229.
