U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker brought a certificate of recognition and a flag that had been flown over the United States Capitol in honor of the post. “Thank you to each of you. You are the true heroes among us,” he said, adding that the members had taken an oath to defend the Constitution and the freedoms Americans enjoy and noting that May 15 was also Armed Forces Day. State Rep. Dave Zimmerman also noted Brower’s dedication to the community, and he pointed out the connections between the cando attitude of agricultural communities, such as the ELANCO area, and the armed services. He presented the post with a citation that honored the history of the VFW throughout Pennsylvania. Tim Bender, mayor of New Holland, concluded the event. He thanked the organization for its continued service and especially noted his appreciation for Brower’s dedication to local organizations. Bender stated that the VFW’s support and service has a huge impact. “Veterans giving back to the community and taking care of their own is an incredible example to all of us and should be honored,” he said.

Part of the fun of owning an antique, vintage, or classic car is having a story to tell about that vehicle.

Greg Dyer, who has been a head judge at the New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show for 30 years, has a story about his 1963 Thunderbird, and his grandson Harry Townsend has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “1970-71 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.”

Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine,

made it difficult to keep going. “It’s only by the support of the community and the grace of God that we’re still here,” she said.

Cavod’s open house will be held at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, on Saturday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for tours of the facility and a chance to meet the instructors. The organization, which is now in its 17th year, offers classes in a variety of disciplines for 3-year-olds to adults. Lessons are available in dance classes including all levels of jazz, ballet, creative movement, hip-hop, acrobatics, and modern dance, along with music, theater, and acting. In addition, Cavod is now livestreaming classes from each studio. “You can attend a live virtual class from your home,” noted Dienner. “It’s very state of the art, so it looks like you’re right in the classroom.” Teachers will be on hand to meet potential students at the open house.

Dienner said the event will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who will broadcast live, and more. Free food options will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. Lickity Split will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session, as well as ice cream treats for purchase. A special drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod for those who qualify.

Regular performances will continue to be a highlight of the event. This year, Dienner has lined up music, theater, and dance presentations every 30 minutes. In addition, every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses. A grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away.

Dienner is looking forward to the event with enthusiasm. “We have grown. We’re excited. We’re open,” she shared. “We have made it through COVID, and we’re stronger than ever.”

Readers who would like to know more may visit https://cavod.org. Individuals who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

Cavod Performing Arts will hold an open house at its New Holland location on July 10.

Ressler’s Mill Tour Pays Tribute To Local History

BY ANN MEAD ASH

“We are a best-kept secret,” said Linda Taylor, a tour guide at Ressler’s Mill in Mascot, a small village located southeast of Leola. “Anyone who has an interest in Lancaster County history would enjoy a visit here.”

There has been a mill on the property at 2900 Stumptown Road, Ronks, since the 1730s. The last family to run a mill there purchased the site in 1865. Three generations of Resslers worked the mill until 1977, when Franklin Ressler and his sister, Anna, ceased operations and moved to Landis Homes, taking one suitcase each. What they left behind - along with Franklin’s shrewd investments - has allowed the mill property to become a historical treasure in Lancaster County.

“I know the mill, and the mill knows me,” said Franklin in a video that was made shortly before his death at age 92 in 1994. The mill also known as the Mascot Roller Mills - which processed both corn and wheat, was Franklin’s life work from the time he completed high school, with the exception of three years in the 1940s when he served in the U.S. Air Force. The mill also served as the Mascot Post Office and a community hub from 1890 to sometime in the 1930s. The name “Mascot” is associated with the post office, approved by John Wanamaker, who was postmaster general when the post office was set up. According to Taylor, the name “Mascot” was based on a dog in a play that Jacob and Annie Ressler parents of Anna and Franklin - saw when they traveled to New York City to be married by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher.

During a tour, Taylor explained the workings of the mill, noting that grain was stored on the second floor. “(Grain) was loaded in a barrel and hoisted up using waterpower,” she noted, adding that water was channeled to run the water wheels and grinding stones. “In the early 1900s, the water wheels were replaced with water turbines,” explained Taylor. Conveyor belts took the meal upstairs to be sifted, with finer product used for food and coarser meal becoming animal feed.

After Anna and Franklin moved out, the home was preserved as they left it for the sake of history. Among the artifacts they left behind is the Conestoga wagon bell Anna used to summon Franklin for lunch. Visitors can also see the summer kitchen where meals were cooked and the root cellar, which can keep eggs and butter at a constant temperature year-round. The children’s ice skates and the wedding flowers that belonged to Annie, Franklin and Anna’s mother, preserved in wax, are also on display.

The Ressler Mill is currently open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Wednesday through Saturday. More information may be found at www.resslermill.com.

Phase one construction will convert the gymnasium into event space. “The plan is to get a new roof,” said Nagle, who noted grants have been secured to complete that task. “We will move the insulation outside so we can expose the 1920s construction to restore the history of the room.” Phase two will address the bathrooms and redo the floor. Nagle said grants to complete those projects have been received as well.

Nagle added that The Factory also has plans to further extend its reach. “The desire is to open a restaurant in the corner of the building,” he explained, noting that talks are ongoing to explore the opportunity with a successful county eatery. A commercial kitchen could be used to train local residents in marketable skills, along with providing a gathering place to work and connect with others. The restaurant could also cater events at TCC, such as baby showers, weddings, and church retreats. “Itwill be space for the community, and it will help drive revenue for us and give us workforce development,” said Nagle.

Nagle noted that although COVID interrupted Project Activate, the concepts that were presented have gained traction. “(These ideas) have a lot of potential,” he said.

Summer Vibes At PA Beaches

BY WENDY ROYAL

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state.

Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-atyour-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road.

See Vibes pg 10 Quartet frompg 6

Admission is free. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on soft turf within the park’s terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show meal may use the picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. Vendors will be present to offer food, cold beverages and Italian water ice. Social distancing protocols will be in effect, and audience capacity will be based upon state and CDC guidelines at the time of the event. Ample parking can be found along Precision Avenue. The park’s main parking lot, located at 151 Precision Ave., is reserved for handicapped-accessible parking. For more information, visit www.strasburgpark.org, find “Strasburg Community Park” on Facebook, or contact Barb Rathbone-Frank at 717-572-6830.

R073026 Car Show frompg 4 transmission, or interior,” Dyer explained, adding that the owner had all the parts. “That was 1994,” he recalled, standing proudly by the now-complete white Thunderbird with a black top and red interior.

Townsend has been associated with the car show since he was featured in a newspaper photo in a miniature car as a child. He purchased his now brightly painted truck in February 2017 for $800. “It was my first truck,” recalled Townsend, whose grandfather added that in 2017 the then high school student did not yet have a driver’s license. “It barely ran, and it had a lot of rust,” Townsend said. “I am awfully proud of it (now).” Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 11, vintage cars will line up on the show field, while hit-and-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards will be given to cars chosen by designated judges at 3 p.m. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and at 1 p.m., the New Holland Combo Band will perform. A variety of food items will be available for purchase, including bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches and coffee from 9 a.m. until noon. Other food that will be for sale at the event will include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, french fries, and ice cream. In conjunction with the car show, the Friends of the ELANCO Library will hold a book sale at the park that day. The show will be held rain or shine. Cars that will be judged must be registered to participate by 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 10. Owners who have questions about the show may contact Loewen at loewen58@yahoo.com or call 717413-6229.

Lancaster County Cruisers will host its 21st annual car show on Saturday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This rain-or-shine event will take place at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street.

There are no rules regarding age, make, or model.

“Bring anything,” said club vice president Jack Parke, adding that vehicles do not need to be operational.

There is a cost to exhibit a vehicle, with a discount for those who register before the event. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, but they are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. A portion of the proceeds from entrance fees will also go to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.

The Lancaster County Cruisers’ annual car show welcomes cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entries. All the door and cash prizes are reserved for nonmembers. “We have loads of trophies, cash prizes, and tons of door prizes,” Parke remarked. There will be a DJ, and food vendors will sell burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, fruit cups, and beverages. The Lancaster County Cruisers club has been around since 1994 and welcomes new members. For more information about the club or the car show, readers may call Parke at 717-786-3923 or Ed Caskey at 717-808-8606.

“We are excited to be able to get back into events,” said John Styer, one of the organizers of Terre Hill Days. “People have been asking (since Jan. 1) if we will have Terre Hill Days this year, so I think people are ready to get out.”

Styer and the rest of the Terre Hill Days committee are planning lots of new entertainment to highlight the 2021 event, which will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 15 through 18. Events will open at 5 p.m. on July 15 and Friday, July 16, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 17. A church service and gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. on July 18.

“We have new bands (to entertain),” said Styer, who noted that Echo North from Reading will play acoustic rock specializing in tunes from the 1960s to today at 7 p.m. on July 15. On July 16, the Cramer Brothers Country Band from the Poconos area will play. “People have been asking for that band, and this will be their first time in Terre Hill,” said Styer. At 2 p.m. on July 17, the side stage will feature Dutchyfunk, a New Orleans style brass band from Lancaster, while at 4 p.m. Old Time Country Music will play bluegrass in the lower pavilion.

At 7 p.m. on July 17, the headliner will be Left Field from the Reading area. “They are rockier,” Styer said of the band that will play just prior to the 10 p.m. fireworks show.

Styer noted that children’s entertainment will include daily performances and activities. Among these will be Sneakers the Clown, the DKers Juggling Show, games, rides, and a magic show. An unlimited ride special will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 15. On July 17 at 3:30 p.m., an airplane will drop sweets from the sky for a candy scramble. Along with candy, children who take part in the scramble will find coupons from vendors, Christmas in the Park coupons, and free tickets to that same event.

Styer said food trucks selling a variety of items will be on site. Among the foods available will be smoked meats, cheesesteaks, bourbon chicken sandwiches, and bacon burgers with bacon in the burger. Items available in the main pavilion will include sausage sandwiches, soup, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Dessert items will include both soft and hard ice cream treats, funnel cakes, and fried chocolate sandwich cookies.

On July 18, a church service will be held in the park. A community picnic will be held at noon. Terre Hill Days will provide hot dogs and beverages, and attendees are invited to bring a salad, hot dish, or dessert to share. The pavilion will be open for food items that need to be refrigerated or to plug in slow cookers. Entertainment during the picnic will be provided by the Hot Walkers, a Lititz-based four-piece classic jazz/swing group, which will begin playing at noon.
