Exhibit to highlight the work of artist Milton E. Denlinger

During the upcoming Living History Celebration on Saturday, July 20, at White Chimneys Estate in Gap, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township will present a special display featuring the work of Lancaster County artist Milton Denlinger. The exhibit, which will be located in the site’s bridal suite, will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Denlinger, who lived from 1909 to 1991, was born and raised in Gap and attended art schools in Coatesville and Philadelphia. In addition to painting, he had an engraving business and did lettering on signs, vehicles and mailboxes. He also painted murals for five churches in the Lancaster County area.

he has painted; they would recognize some of the (locations). It would also be interesting to local businesses. He took photographs of the lettering that he did.”

Other collectors who own Denlinger artwork will also be loaning their paintings to the society for the one-day exhibit.

On July 20, visitors can expect to see more than 20 of Denlinger’s paintings, most of which are owned by Sherry Denlinger Groff, Denlinger’s granddaughter.

community members about their recollections of Denlinger and his artwork.

Groff will be on hand during the day to answer questions and possibly learn information from

“I want to hear the stories. I want people to come out and tell (me where they have seen his art),” she said. “This show would be interested to artists … to see how he learned in art school and the style he was taught long ago. It would be interesting to historians to see the local scenes

Groff noted that visitors will be able to view Denlinger’s practice sketches from his time at art school in Coatesville from 1923 to 1925, which feature his own handwritten notes about the drawings, as well as notes from the art teacher. Groff shared that she does not know the name or location of the art school or the identity of the art teacher, and she hopes that someone who attends the upcoming exhibit will be able to tell her.

There will also be a photo of Denlinger’s engraving business, Artist Emblem Company in

Schreiber Pediatric reimagines annual Rubber Duckie Race Kindergarten warmup

“We have to move centers,” announced Lisa Eckert, director of early learning with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). The 14 boys and girls spread out in three different areas of the Braves Learning Center snapped to attention and began switching places. The students, who attended Pequea Valley Kindergarten Ready Camp during the week of June 24, were preparing to become kindergartners at either Paradise or Salisbury Elementary School in the fall.

The June 24 campers were the second group to meet under Eckert’s watchful eyes. The first group of 14 met the week of June 10 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day from Monday through Thursday. Camp was

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development will hold the 2024 Rubber Duckie Race and Festival on Sunday, Sept. 8, at its facility, located at 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine community event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m., and it will include a variety of family-friendly activities in addition to a new tradition that will replace the Rubber Duckie Race

in the Conestoga River.

This year, the festival will incorporate several races for the first time since it began 36 years ago, including the Duckie Dash at 3 p.m., the Duckie Dash relay at 3:30 p.m. and the Duckling Dash at 2:30 p.m. The Duckie Dash will entail a 1-mile race that is open to runners 13 years old and above. Teams of four may sign up for the Duckie Dash relay, which will include a quarter-mile run that

Soudersburg, and photos of trucks and buildings that he lettered, including one of a Herr’s Potato Chips truck with the lettering on it that he painted in 1959. “He worked at an engraving company in Lancaster and started his own company,” Groff noted. “He did engravings on high school class rings, but I don’t know who has them. You don’t sign them like you do your artwork.”

Two of the paintings on display will feature the Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge, which was moved to Elizabethtown. One of the paintings of the bridge was done in a three-dimensional style. “He documented (history) in pictorial form,” Groff added.

Not only is Denlinger known for his artwork, engraving and lettering, but he also competed three 12-by-4-foot murals that are currently for sale at an antique shop in New Holland. The murals were commissioned by Noah E. Martin in 1953 to depict seasonal scenes of Lancaster County.

Groff hopes that a buyer from the Lancaster County area will purchase the murals. “They need to be in Lancaster County,” she noted. “The beauty of them and some of the things in those paintings would be lost if they were sent to some hotel in New York.”

White Chimneys is located at 5117 Lincoln Highway (Route 30), Gap. To find the Denlinger exhibit, follow the signs to the front building directly across the driveway from the main house. open to any PVSD student who will enter kindergarten in the fall. Parents were invited to register their children, who then participated in a variety of activities designed to prepare them to attend school.

“They practice writing their names,” said Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy, who assists Eckert with camp. Beiler explained that being able to write part of his or her name is a goal for each child to reach by the first day of school.

“(Camp activities are) based on practicing what they will be doing in kindergarten,” explained Beiler, who added that those activities include practicing sitting in a circle, listening, and following directions. Each day of camp has a different academic theme, including topics such as letters, numbers, shapes, and beginning sounds. Three centers

coordinate with the theme of the day. Two of the three centers are academic based, and the third offers free play, but based on the theme of the day. A STEM activity and gym time are also included in each day’s schedule. Beiler explained that during gym time, students learn to share toys or find a friend to play with.

Eckert believes that 75 to 80 youngsters will enter kindergarten in PVSD this fall. Three classes will meet at Paradise Elementary, and two will meet at Salisbury. Being dropped off by a parent or caregiver on that first day of school can be upsetting to a child, and camp helps prepare future kindergartners for that milestone too. “A big component of camp is practicing separating from Mom and Dad or whoever drops them off,” noted Beiler. “It’s huge, but (these campers) are doing great.”

“Around 11 a.m., we go to Paradise Elementary, and they provide a free lunch,” shared Beiler, who noted PVSD has an invitation-only summer camp for older students going on the during the two weeks of kindergarten camp. Even eating lunch constitutes a learning experience for the campers. “At lunchtime, they practice walking through the cafeteria, carrying a tray, getting milk, and making fruit or vegetable choices,” said Beiler.

In addition, Eckert takes the opportunity to be sure parents of campers are aware of other resources available in PVSD, such as the Lunch & Learns she and Beiler hold in a local park. Readers who would like to learn more about the Braves Learning Center, located in The Factory Ministries, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, may visit https://thefactoryministries.com.

Gregg Kennedy has owned three Mustangs. The one currently in his corral is a 1985 5-liter in medium canyon red, but the first “Stang” Kennedy ever owned was a 1965 model he bought at Sauder’s Chevrolet in New Holland. “(The car) was 7 years old, and I paid $650,” recalled Kennedy. “I wish I still had that car.”

The Mustang, also known as the “pony” car, which was developed by Lee Iacocca

for Ford, will turn 60 this year. To celebrate that anniversary, the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show will feature a number of “unique Mustangs and survivor cars,” according to organizer Steve Loewen. This year’s show, the 43rd annual, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14, beginning at 9 a.m. with breakfast items available for purchase. Cars may enter the show

field at 9:30 a.m. As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 13.

Kennedy will bring his current Mustang, which he purchased at New Holland Auto Group in 1995 for $400. “I work at New Holland Auto Group, and a customer who lives here in New Holland came in to trade it for a minivan,” reported Kennedy, who noted that the former owner comes to see the professionally restored car at the show. Kennedy also formerly owned a 1972

Sprint edition Mustang in red, white, and blue. Because Stangs were built to appeal to young women’s eyes and pocketbooks, Mustangs were often referred to as the “secretary’s car.” “In my opinion, it’s the best sports car in the market, but I am highly prejudiced,” noted Kennedy.

Cars entered in the show will be judged in 30 classes. Judging for the Spectator’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards, plus the new John D. Sauder Award, will be given out at 3:30 p.m. along with the Best of Show and Spectator’s Choice awards. Vintage sounds will include New Holland Band’s German Band at 11 a.m., Dixieland Band at noon, and the New Holland Swing Band at 1:30 p.m. A variety of food items will be available for purchase beginning at 9 a.m. Food trucks that will sell items at the event will include Mr. Mini’s Tasty Donuts, Hen House Grilling & BBQ, D&B’z Foods, NiCE SiZE FRiES, and Lickity Split. The New Holland Band will coordinate a beverage stand.

In conjunction with the car

show, the ELANCO Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the park.

This year, Loewen’s co-chair is New Holland Band member Cody Mellinger. “(Mellinger) is learning the ropes and adding

his own suggestions for the show,” said Loewen. “He has some good ideas.” Car owners who have questions about the show may contact Loewen at loewen58@yahoo.com or call 717-413-6229.

participants will complete wearing a duckie floatie. Children ages 2 to 5 and 6 to 12 may compete in the 100-meter Duckling Dash. Participants in each race will receive refreshments at the end of the run and 10 festival tickets. Those who sign up for the Duckie Dash will receive one entry in a prize drawing, and prizes will be given to the team that places first in the relay race. Race winners will be announced at 4 p.m. All participants who sign up before Thursday, Aug. 1, will receive a commemorative T-shirt and an early-bird discount on the cost of registration.

Parkesburg United Methodist Church, 411 Main St., Parkesburg, wild hold a takeout chicken barbecue on Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal will include a whole chicken leg; choice of baked beans, macaroni salad or roasted potatoes; coleslaw; and a roll with butter. For tickets, call or text 717-380-3098.

Proceeds will be used to repair and preserve the church’s stained-glass windows.

but tickets must be purchased to participate in the festival’s various activities, such as carnival games and pony rides. Refreshments will be available to purchase from several food trucks, including Scoops Ice Cream and Grille, Cupcakes by Casey, Walk-O Taco and Dunkin’ Community Cruiser.

Traditionally, the event has included the Rubber Duckie Race, which entailed dumping thousands of rubber ducks into the Conestoga River. To make the fundraiser more environmentally friendly, Schreiber will not drop any rubber ducks into the river, but supporters may still adopt a duck online with a donation to the organization. Similarly

to years past, adopting a duck will include an entry in a prize drawing.

“We wanted to find a way to bring the festival to our campus,” said Schreiber’s marketing and communications manager, Alexandra Cahill. “This is where all of our families and clients are comfortable, and it’s accommodating for people with mobility issues.”

For the past 36 years, the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival has served as one of Schreiber’s largest fundraisers, and it often draws more than 1,000 attendees. The funds raised from the event are used to cover the organization’s general expenses and treatment costs for patients who are

When Cavod Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit dedicated to offering a godly environment to study the arts, plans an open house, the organization puts an emphasis on fun.

“Our open house will be on Saturday, July 13,” said Julie Wendler, artistic director with Cavod. “We will start at 9 a.m., and we will be partying until 1:30 p.m.” Cavod has locations in New Holland and Manheim. The New Holland open house will be held at 665 W. Main St.

“We will be joined by Kid’s Cookie Break (a WJTL radio show) in the morning,” said Wendler, who added that every half hour artists representing different Cavod departments will perform. “We will have dance performances, live music, and a spoken word presentation from our theater department,” she noted.

Free snacks available at the event will include hot dogs and popcorn. “We will have free ice cream (provided by Lickity Split) for anyone who registers for a class that day,” said Wendler.

As in the past, door prizes will be available for all attendees to win.

“There’s no need to register. These are free giveaways, so anyone who is there has a good chance of winning a prize,” Wendler pointed out.

A grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. “It’s like a theater pass basket,” she explained.

Cavod’s experienced instructors will be present at the open house to meet prospective students and their families and answer questions.

“Our teachers are from all over the States,” stated Wendler. “They have Broadway experience or international performance and teaching experience. It will be a knockout year as far as staffing goes.”

Cavod offers classes for students from age 3 to adults. “Between both locations, we will offer more than 150 dance classes,” said Wendler, who confirmed that dance classes include all levels of jazz, ballet, creative movement, hip-hop, acrobatics, modern, and

Bringing quality entertainment to the venue had been a focus for the last few years. “Building on the success of last year’s business
