Mentoring moves forward at PV

InSeptember of 2022, an open house was held at Pequea Valley High School to introduce the First Choice Discovery Program, a work-based program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore. The event was successful, and in October, Jared Erb, First Choice career coordinator, held two well-attended training sessions for mentors. “We were excited about that turnout at those events,” recalled Erb, who held mentor meetings in November and December to prepare for the program.

On Feb. 1, a career day was held for students in ninth through 12th grades. Representatives of more than 50 community partners took part.

In March, 11 groups of students visited 22 companies as part of a job shadowing day. Students in the law and military group visited the East Lampeter Township Police Department and Judge Raymond Sheller’s office in Gordonville, and toured the National Guard Armory

in Coatesville. “(At Sheller’s office) we sat in on a trial and talked with the judge afterward,” said Erb of the group he chaperoned. Another group visited Armstrong’s Science Testing Labs to see product development from inception through testing, and a group visited Astro Machine works to gain an understanding of how different mechanical skills apply in manufacturing. At Four Seasons Produce, students learned about how distribution and shipping are completed through a contract with a transportation company. “They got to see how diesel mechanics service trucks,” said Erb, who added that the group toured the automotive department at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

On April 28, the final meeting of the year for all sophomores and mentors was held. “We started with an alumni panel. They shared valuable lessons they have learned in their first couple years beyond graduation,” Erb said, adding that he was impressed with the former students’ “depth of insight into what makes one successful in the See PVSD pg 3

FCA holds sports camps

On June 14, nearly 20 children and adults gathered at the Intercourse Library to enjoy the unusual combination of a creative tale mixed with science experiments as performed by Claire Golden Drake from Talewise, who asked the children to simply call her “Miss Claire.”

Each experiment was performed more than once. Miss Claire explained that she would make a slight change with the second experiment and asked the children to form a hypothesis about what might happen based on that change.

Diana Roth, area representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was thrilled to hear the response from a parent whose child was attending the New Holland Power Camp when Roth asked if her child was enjoying the experience. “I asked a parent today if her child had fun,” said Roth. “And she said, ‘Yes.’ She said her child’s only complaint was that this is the last day. I like to hear that.”

The New Holland camp, which was held from June 19 through 22, is one of three held in the county this summer. The Lancaster camp, which attracted about 50 students

from Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church from June 12 through 15. The Manheim camp was held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church from July 10 through July 13. Each camp begins at 9 a.m. each day and runs until 3:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme, including a Hawaiian shirt day and a crazy day. The overall theme of this year’s camps is “Greater,” based on John 3:30. Each day begins with worship featuring the worship band from the host

church and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The worship team and speaker set the tone for the day,” said Roth. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport.

Roth said that the volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school coaches, and many serve for multiple weeks. At New Holland, students could choose to participate in basketball, football, field hockey, soccer, or lacrosse. Because the New Holland camp attracted nearly 150 students, half ate lunch while the other half met with their huddle leaders for Bible study. Both high school and middle school students serve as junior huddle leaders.

“A huddle is five to seven students and a leader,” said Roth. “Huddle leaders are with campers leading, guiding, encouraging, all through camp.” Fifteen coaches and 51 huddle leaders took part in the New Holland camp. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, snack, and closing assembly.

“It is a faith-based camp,” noted Roth. “The whole reason we do camp is to share the Gospel.” With that goal in mind, boy campers compete against girl campers to raise funds to hold similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. “Our goal is to raise $7,000 from all (three Lancaster County) camps combined,” said Roth.

In the program, called “Science Heroes: Saving Earth Together,” Miss Claire began with the characters of Professor Noble and Penney, who worked together in Professor Noble’s lab. She discussed how when they stopped for lunch, one made a banana sandwich and the other made a marshmallow sandwich. When the pair decided to combine the

two sandwiches, they created something completely new.

To demonstrate a chemical change, Miss Claire used a bowl of water and two chemicals. “When we mix these two together, the one that is a liquid will turn into a solid,” she explained. Working with volunteers from the audience, Miss Claire showed the group the result of the chemical

In addition to Professor Noble and Penney, the story involved a villain called Dr. Sludge. During their lunch, the professor and his assistant detected a terrible smell from the parking lot. Outside they discovered a “giant mountain” of garbage. “It could only be the work of the super greasy garbage dumper,” said Miss

Claire, who instructed the children to sing “duh, duh, duh,” each time she said the name Dr. Sludge. After the professor and Penney tried to climb the mountain of garbage, Penney fell, grabbing the professor’s hand, she pulled him all the way down the mountain. “That’s a chain reaction,” said Miss Claire, who then performed an experiment involving a 50-foot chain of beads. She explained Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion, which states that an object will not change its motion unless a force acts on it. Miss Claire showed how pulling on the beads started a chain reaction, and the students counted to seven to measure how long it would take for the beads to all hit the floor. The experiment was repeated with larger beads, and only six seconds were required to complete the experiment.

As the professor and Penney attempted to save the world from Dr. Sludge, Miss Claire performed a number of other experiments, including those involving evaporation, air pressure, and absorption. At the end, the professor and Penney defeated Dr. Sludge when he fell through a trap door into the sewers below and crawled away.

Flax 101 class posted

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum will host a new, hands-on class titled Flax 101 on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Landis Valley Museum has grown and processed flax for many years, as flax fiber was used to create linen, an important textile to Pennsylvania Germans.

With guidance from Landis Valley historic farming expert Joe Schott, attendees will “pull,” or harvest, flax in the field; learn about the retting process; and then process retted flax to fiber. Attendees should dress to be

outside, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. This workshop requires some physical exertion. Participants should meet at the Visitor’s Center.

The event will be held if there is light rain, but it will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 29, if thunderstorms or heavy rain is predicted.

Space is limited, and all sales are final. There is a fee, with a discount for Landis Valley Associates members. Proceeds will benefit the museum.

To register, visit https:// tinyurl.com/flax101.
