Junior League Honors Moyer The Junior League of Lancaster, PA, Inc. (JLL) announced that Emma Moyer is this year’s winner of the 2022 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award. Moyer is a graduating senior at Manheim Central High School. Moyer received a $1,800 prize, $300 of which will be donated to North Star Initiative, Moyer’s chosen charity. Moyer’s commitment to volunteer service is evident in her many activities, including Spanish Honor Society, through which she teaches Spanish to middle school students and provides translation for local nonprofit organizations; National Honor Society, where she leads Junior Achievement Day; Interact Club, where she volunteers with local retirement communities and soup

kitchens; and activities at her church, where she serves as a small group leader for the middle school youth group and a member of the worship team. Moyer shared that one of her most meaningful volunteer experiences has been her small group leader role at her church. As part of this program, Moyer mentors eighthgrade girls through life’s challenges, builds relationships and encourages them on their faith journeys. Through her volunteer role, Moyer said, she has learned new perspectives on life’s hardships, learned to manage difficult situations, felt a new gratefulness for her many blessings and honed her skills in asking for other perspectives on how to best handle a situation. The award is named for Deborah P. Altman, a past

president of the JLL, whose life exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspire their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $47,000 has been awarded to youths in Lancaster County. For more information about the JLL, visit www.jllancaster.org.

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has named Michael Butterman as its next music director following a search that lasted more than two years. The LSO received over 190 applications for the position and, with the help of its search committee, invited four finalists to conduct a week in Lancaster. The orchestra’s board voted unanimously to install Butterman in the position, marking the second time in the LSO’s 75year history that it has named a new music director. Butterman began his new role on July 1 and will conduct four of the orchestra’s five Masterworks concerts of the 2022-23 season starting in October. Butterman is perhaps best known for his work as music director of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. He may also be recognized for his 19-year association with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as principal conductor for education and community engagement and

Railroad Museum Posts Activities The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer a variety of programs during July and August for people of all ages and all interests. Registration for sensory hours, summer camps, and railroading merit badge workshops will be available at www.eventbrite.com. Children and other community members with special sensory needs are invited to visit the museum during Sensory Hours on Tuesday, July 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. The museum will reduce lighting and sounds, maintain a low attendance, and designate quiet spaces for breaks. A few of the historic trains will be open, with museum staff members present to answer questions. There is a fee per person for those age 3 and up; admission is free for children age 2 and under, per-

sonal assistant aides, and current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. A virtual summer camp, A Moveable Feast, will be offered for children ages 9 to 12 from Tuesday, Aug. 2, to Thursday, Aug. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. Campers will develop new skills and meet peers while they explore the museum’s historic railroad equipment used in transporting food from the farm to the table and in railroad dining. They will also view the railroad dining artifacts in the museum’s collection, collaborate with other campers to solve challenges, and receive ingredients for an at-home baking project using a ginger muffin recipe used on Pennsylvania Railroad dining cars. The fee includes all three sessions. Attendees must have

Grambau Wins H.K. Cooper Award Stephanie Grambau of Lititz is this year’s recipient of the H.K. Cooper Award. The Lancaster County Dental Society dedicates this award to the memory of the late H.K. Cooper, a Lancaster orthodontist who pioneered the team approach to the treatment of cleft lip and palate and whose efforts led to the founding of the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic in 1938. The clinic recognized the need for evaluating and treating patients with a wide variety of congenital or acquired craniofacial conditions. Although usually awarded to a dentist, this year the Cooper Award was presented to Stephanie, who is a nurse and the wife of dentist Dr. Todd Grambau, for her years

of volunteer service in the Alliance of the Lancaster County Dental Society. The ceremony took place at Bent Creek Country Club in May. The Alliance to the Lancaster County Dental Society is a charitable and social organization dedicated to the support of the dental family, community oral health education, and legislative advocacy for the welfare of the public and the dental profession. A member of the Alliance for more than 12 years, Stephanie has been the president of the Alliance for the past 10 years. She has run programs such as the annual fundraiser for the organization, which has regularly brought in over $8,000 a year in donations to fund the organization’s charitable works. She has also overseen the stuff-
