New book highlights local one-room schools

Forthe past eight years, Leona Baker, president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, has spent time interviewing people both in person and over the phone, gathering photos and completing research about local one-room schools. The result of her work is a new book, “How They Learned Their ABC’s.”

The book, which features contributions from former teachers and students, will be unveiled at a book launch on Saturday, July 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the annual White Chimneys’ Living History Event. Baker will sign and read from the book in the bridal suite at White Chimneys. There will also be a display of one-room schoolhouse photos at the event, as well as memorabilia.

Baker explained that the idea to compose a book about one-room schools came about after the annual Pequea Valley Alumni Association dinner in 2015. At that event, the

Historical Society of Salisbury Township featured a display about public one-room schools in the Salisbury Township area, which included photos of the schools’ teachers.

“Those who saw the display began sharing their memories as they looked at the pictures,” Baker explained in the book’s introduction. “I was intrigued and began asking for interviews. Some people told their friends, and more names entered my notebook.”

Baker conducted most of the interviews in people’s homes. Recognizing that some of the interviewees felt uncomfortable with a recorder, she wrote notes by hand. In most cases, she returned to the contributors’ homes to check for accuracy. “I wrote the notes and typed them out and took them back or mailed (the notes) to them,” she explained. “Each time I went, I took a gift of some kind. (Sometimes) they thought about other things to add while they were waiting for me to come back.”

First Back to School Extravaganza! planned

“Last year, we did a back-to-school supply shop at one of our Lunch & Learns,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). “This year, it has evolved into something bigger and much different.”

Eckert and Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy, are currently planning the first Back to School Extravaganza!, which will be held in the gymnatorium at The Factory Ministries, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, on Wednesday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event, which is open to all children in See Extravaganza! pg 5

Freedom Life holds groundbreaking ceremony

Freedom Life Church congregation members and church leadership gathered on June 25 at a vacant property along Route 41 and Zook Road in West Sadsbury Township to officially break ground for a new church facility. The building plans include an auditorium with 630 seats, a gymnasium, an indoor playground, six classrooms, a cafe and meeting spaces.

The day began with worship at the church’s current main campus, located at 447 Noble Road in

Christiana. The group then traveled to the new location for the groundbreaking ceremony, which was led by Sam and Michele Masteller, senior pastors.

“It’s been the current leadership’s desire to move out to the main highway for many years,” said associate pastor Chad Fisher, project manager. “(The new church) will be more centrally located right on Route 41. Where we are currently is off the beaten path. It’s only a few miles from Route 41, but not many people drive by. There will be thousands of cars driving by, and See Freedom Life Church pg 6

The result is a softcover book with more than 400 pages, with each chapter highlighting a different school with text and photos, both in color and black and white. “It’s filled with pictures, so if you went to a one-room school, your photo is probably in the book,” Baker stated. “I was able to chronicle more than 29 public one-room schools operating in Salisbury Township between 1836 and 1966, some longstanding, a few operating for only a few years.”

Baker noted that members of the historical society, including Brett Snyder, Anna Mary Groff, Wanda Smale and Leonard Groff, helped her with the technical aspects of the book’s publishing. “They are the ones who

helped me put the book together,” she said. “My sister, Carol, who is a published author of fiction, helped with proofreading and suggested ways to say things better.”

Historical society members believe that local residents as well as those interested in history will enjoy the stories and photos in the book.

White Chimneys Estate is located at 5117 E. Lincoln Highway, Gap. Books will be for sale at the book launch on July 22. Members of the historical society will receive a discount.

Members of Boy Scout Pack and Troop 28 in Paradise participated in a flag replacement on May 20. It was the groups’ 24th year participating.

The Scouts visited seven Paradise-area cemeteries to replace a total of 485 flags with new ones provided by

Lancaster County Veterans Affairs. Thirty markers were also replaced.

Boy Scout Pack and Troop 28 are sponsored by the Paradise Township Lions Club. For information on joining Boy Scouts, call Scoutmaster Duane Gregg at 717-823-3911.

The Coalition of Homeschoolers Across Lancaster County (CHALC) honored 59 homeschool seniors during its 28th annual graduation ceremony on May 26.

The ceremony was held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church and included music performances by members of the senior class, a commencement speech from the keynote speaker, a video collage of the graduates, graduation speeches from two senior students and the awarding of diplomas by parents.

The keynote address was given by John Blowers, an executive and leader in the small business, nonprofit and local government sectors for more than 30 years. Blowers is currently a member of the leadership team at Martin Flooring Inc. in Fivepointville and serves on the board of directors for Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority.

Peter Hasse of East Earl and Mya Higgins of Lancaster were chosen to deliver the class speeches. Hasse, the son of William and Pamela Hasse, earned an E.C.H.S.D.A. diploma with honors in mathematics, science and fine arts. He plays cello with the Veritas and Allegretto orchestras, as well as the Amorelle String Quartet. This fall, he will attend Grove City College to study chemistry and swim for the college team.

Higgins, the daughter of Brad and Tammy Higgins, earned a Mason Dixon Academic Honors diploma with

Leadership Distinction and Honors for Performance in Fine Arts. Higgins will attend Regent University Honors College to pursue a degree in secondary education.

The graduates performed “Psalm 46 - Lord of Hosts” as their class song. Their class Bible verse is 1 Timothy 6:12, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

Southern End Sluggers claim tournament crown

The Southern End Sluggers, a youth baseball team made up of players from Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Conestoga Valley, Octorara and Pequea Valley, recently captured the Essex Express Baseball Father’s Day Summer Classic.

“Last fall, we won three tournaments,” said coach Nate Galbreath. “This tournament made it four in a row. We have kids of equal talent, so we bat all 12, and every kid gets their time on the bench.”

The tournament was held in Essex, Md.

The Sluggers opened with a 12-1 Saturday morning win over the Owings Mills’ Spartans. Later that evening, the Sluggers settled for an 8-8 tie against the Arlington All-Stars.

“The Saturday games were for seeding, so we went into the single elimination Sunday games as the second seed,” Galbreath explained.

In addition to Peter and Mya, the 2023 CHALC graduates are Joel Maclaren of Bainbridge; Faith VanHanxleden of Bernville; Abigail Ingram, Jaden Munro and Jonathan Osman of Conestoga; Sarah Fellenbaum of Columbia; Ethan Horst and Tanna Witmer of Denver; Corrin James of Douglassville; Jonah Trubey of Drumore; Ethan Birmingham, Bryan

Sunday morning, the Sluggers defeated In the Dirt 8-1 and in the afternoon pulled out a 4-3, come-from-behind win over the Blue Chips to get to the finals. There the Sluggers defeated the top seed, Tripletown Aces, 4-2 to claim

the tournament crown.

“It was a total team effort,” said Galbreath. “We pitched well; made a lot of great plays defensively, including turning multiple double plays; and had some great throws home from the out-

field to nail runners at the plate. Everyone put the ball in play, and we had very few strikeouts against some really good pitching,” he added. “We had multiple extra base hits, and we ran the bases really well.”

Beiler noted that Bellevue Presbyterian Church and Pequea Evangelical Congregational Church have teamed up to gather backpacks, school supplies, and hygiene supplies for the giveaway, and Eckert added that Staples on Lincoln Highway also donated. Charlotte Lapp and Sarah Hannah, who works at Salis-

Limeville’s Blessings will also have a boutique on site for additional shopping. A ticket system will be utilized by families to choose specific items for children. “Registration is up (this year),” Beiler pointed out, “so we are still looking for items for middle and high school students such as backpacks, pencils, binders, and hygiene supplies.” Supplies can be dropped at The Factory Ministries by Friday, July 28.

Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, Aug. 1, to help prepare the gymnatorium for the event. hopefully they will stop in and check us out.”

Members of the church and children from the FL Kids program also took part in the groundbreaking. They were also invited to bury prayer cards. “Families, individuals and kids from Freedom Life wrote down prayers or their faith goals or (the names of) people they would like to come to Jesus,” said Fisher. “It was (about) planting a seed and having faith to

believe in what the prayer requests are.”

According to a written history of the church, it began as Victory Chapel, which evolved from campground revival meetings held in 1971. Within a short period of time, attendance multiplied, and the congregation purchased the land on Noble Road to construct the church. Throughout the years, the church was known for offering programs for the community in its building, gymnasium and adjacent woodlands.

Sam and Michele were named youth pastors in 1999 and served in that role for

four years. They have been senior pastors for 20 years, and they will celebrate 25 years with the church in October. In 2000, the name of the church was changed from Victory Chapel to Freedom Life Christian Center to help “people experience the freedom and life only God can offer.”

Freedom Life purchased the 32-acre parcel of land in West Sadsbury Township in 2018. The land is paid in full, and church members have raised more than $3 million for the building project. They are currently in the middle of a twoyear campaign to raise an additional $3 million. Freedom Life is also planning to sell its current facility along Noble Road to help pay for the

expenses of the new building.

“This facility will give us more opportunities to serve our neighbors,” said Fisher. “Freedom Academy, our preschool and homeschool cooperative, will move to our new location during the week. I’m also hoping that we can offer indoor pickleball courts. There are numerous options. But for right now, we’re focusing on securing approvals and beginning the construction process.”

Once construction begins, Freedom Life is expected to move within nine to 12 months.

For more information about the church, visit www.freedom.life or www. facebook.com/freedomlife.tv.
