When Josh March, owner of emPower Training Systems, 276 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, first heard about human trafficking in Lancaster County during a presentation at Grace Community Church in Willow Street a few years ago, he was struck by its prevalence. “Most people don’t realize human trafficking is a big issue in our area,” he said. “As a father and husband, it really hits home.” See North Star Initiative pg 5

We don’t just do recovery; we want to inspire the next generation of game changers in society.” Rob gives presentations about the mission of The Potter’s House, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-

It was in the prison that he had an encounter with the Lord and a vision of a healing center for those who had encountered brokenness in their families and addiction. TIN from pg 1 when they are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade. Adults at the lowest literacy levels are 10 times more likely to be living in poverty. “If we want to deal with a systemic issue like poverty reduction, we want to work toward one root cause, and it takes all of us,” said Rogers. The meetings follow a specific format, where attendees briefly share a challenge or a win and others consider how to partner, support, help, or connect in that area. “It was the format that seemed to accomplish our purpose the best,” noted Rogers, who pointed out that organizers are always asking themselves for better ways to run the meetings. Since the beginning, the number of community representatives attending has grown significantly, and now the business community and a number of county organizations are often represented. “I

think (TIN meetings) are the fastest way to hear what’s going on in our community from a variety of sectors,” said Rogers. “It’s a chance for people to learn about the opportunities and challenges (PV) faces and also a chance to work on a specific, targeted vision together.” Looking ahead, Rogers would like to see more PVarea residents get involved. “It’s the fastest way I know of to get caught up personally with the heartbeat of our community and connect to a strategic group of people working on solutions to systemic problems,” he said. “If you want to make a difference in our community and aren’t sure how, this group can help you plug in so we’re working together in even more impactful ways.” Readers who would like to learn more about TIN may email jen@gracepoint paradise.com.

Founded by John Esh in 1993, E&E General Contracting grew organically into a very successful business. Between 2010 and 2015, two of John’s sons, Michael and Matt, began sharing many of the management responsibilities, and the company began to slowly expand its team, offering a broad spectrum of exterior services. By the year 2016, John began to extend the company’s ownership and management to his sons, with the two of them eventually taking on the lead roles, where they remain today. Well known for their attention to detail, quality service and overall experience, the E & E team specializes in custom exterior work. They’re looking forward to growth and benefits that this expansion will offer in general, but they’re particularly looking forward to better serving the community. Each customer will be offered a unique experience in their new showroom that allows improved visualization of their project with the ability to see and feel all the materials and products offered; this includes 3-D renderings as an option for some projects. They are looking forward to the job opportunities that will result, in turn allowing for more crews, increased availability, and improved lead times on projects. The three-mile course was designed by March to include more than 20 fun and challenging obstacles. ”It’s for all levels,” noted Esbenshade. “There’s the open race for people who just want to experience it, and they have a competitive race where there are cash prizes.” Esbenshade added that there is a team race for those who want to gather friends to join them and a family race where parents can participate with their children and have fun. According to March, the fitness challenge takes place on the field, underneath the stadium, in the batting cages, and outside the stadium on the property and in the parking lot, with the finish line at the first-base line. “It’s an exciting, fun, and unique event,” he said. Kat Prickett, one of the four vocalists who present “Then Sings My Soul,” likes to say she “grew up on Billy Graham.” “My grandparents, Lee and Mildred Peiffer of Lebanon, were instrumental in exposing me to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association,” noted Prickett. “I have such a deep respect for Mr. Graham and his ministry.” With a background in production, producing, and also performing, Prickett long contemplated putting together a program featuring hymns and their rich histories. When Graham passed away in 2018, Prickett knew the time had come. The resulting program, “Then Sings My Soul,” is a presentation featuring hymns and songs associated with the ministry of Billy Graham, which has been presented yearly since Prickett created it. “Then Sings My Soul” will be presented at Salem Hellers Church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, July 31, at 3 p.m. The original musical program will delve into the history of the hymns and how they connect to the life and ministry of Billy Graham. The program will be sung in four-part harmonies with live piano accompaniment. As a special addition for the show, the Salem Hellers church choir will join the group on the sing-alongs.

There is no admission to attend. A freewill offering will be accepted. Originally, the show was to be presented as part of a summer entertainment series at the The Red Caboose Motel and Restaurant in Strasburg, but that evolved into a week of touring area retirement communities and an appearance at The Junction Center attended by more than 400. In the last four years, the group has been to more than 80 U.S. locations. Rather than simply offering a musical experience, Prickett has filled the show with pieces of history, including the fact that “How Great Thou Art” was not a well-known song in the U.S. until Billy Graham’s crusades. “In 1954, the song was given to George Beverly Shea and performed at the London Crusade,” explained Prickett, who said that the Graham team brought it to Graham, who reportedly loved the song and quickly made it the crusade’s signature song. “On June 16, 1957, during the famous Billy Graham New York Crusade at Madison Square Garden, ‘How Great Thou Art’ was introduced to Christians in the U.S.,” said Prickett.

According to Prickett, the message of “Then Sings My Soul” should not be construed as a celebration of Billy Graham, the man, but rather as a way to share the Gospel message through the stories of the hymns. “The message is the same as Mr. Graham’s always was his whole life,” said Prickett. “God loves YOU … wherever you are (and) no matter what you’ve done. It’s never too late to start a relationship with Jesus Christ.” She noted that she and her fellow singers always hope that audience members leave feeling a little happier and more hopeful. Prickett said that those who attend find the songs moving and will often tell her that they grew up singing the songs or that they have another connection to the music. She noted that her favorite moment is the end of the program when the Gospel message is presented and “Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives” are sung. “We leave people with the hope and peace that only Jesus can provide,” she said. Irwin, who attended the center from 2007 to 2010, is now set to graduate from Millersville University in December. She shared strategies with the graduates on how to overcome

struggles associated with dyslexia and some of the strategies she has utilized to help her be successful. Each graduate was given an autograph bear, the mascot adopted by the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc., as a keepsake. Students presented words of thanks to their tutors and the Board of Governors for the services they received. See Graduate pg 11

Fundraising efforts currently include the annual W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in September and the Extraordinary Give in November, along with a few other newer, smaller fundraisers. The center is hoping to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers can be found at http://childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. For information about the program or how to support its mission, call 717-481-5680 or email lancaster@cdcinc.org.

The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of six such centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. Last year, the center enrolled about 25 children, which was fewer than in previous years due to a lack of staffing and funding. “It’s been challenging raising funds since before COVID,” said Brown. The center operates on a small budget that is sustained primarily through local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the Board of Governors that oversees the program. “It costs over $6,000 annually per child, and it’s more difficult to raise that kind of funding anymore,” Brown noted. The center generally has a waitlist of about 20 children, and it usually takes one to two years before an opening is available. The center also offers free training for adults to receive certification as dyslexia practitioners.
