When Dena Krebs, marketing coordinator with Stoltzfus Meats, was looking for a way to celebrate the business’s 70th anniversary, she visited a festival in a neighboring town devoted to a special Pennsylvania treat made with chocolate and cream. “It got me thinking about the community aspect of it, and I thought, ‘Why don’t we do something like that here, but base it on bacon?’” she stated.
The result of that research is the first Baconfest, which will be held in Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of activities are planned, including demonstrations, a bounce house, yard games, and food trucks offering bacon-themed food items for purchase.
The event will kick off with the Bakin’ with Bacon entry drop-off from 9 to 10:30 a.m. “Jere Gish
Celebratin’ bacon
from WGAL will be one of the judges,” said Krebs of the competition, which is open to any baker and any baked good as long as bacon is an ingredient. The contest winner will be announced at 2:45 p.m.
“We want to put the focus on the community.”
At 10:15 a.m., an Intercourse Library representative will read “Don’t Forget the Bacon” to children and adults. “It’s a giant picture book,” noted Krebs. Live entertainment at the event will include the DKers juggling at 10:45 a.m. and the one-manband talents of Nick DiSanto at 11:30 a.m. WJTL will begin a remote broadcast at 1 p.m. Big Boy Brass will perform at 4:30 p.m.
Demonstrations will begin at
1 p.m. Myron Stoltzfus, an owner of Stoltzfus Meats, and his son, Zach, will bring a portable smoker to the venue. “(They) will explain the process of smoking bacon, taking it out, and carving it,” said Krebs, who added that samples will be available.
Tony Page, who works in product development for Stoltzfus, will demonstrate cooking BaconWrapped Kielbasa Bombs from 2 to 2:30 p.m. “He’ll be giving away samples to those who come to watch,” shared Krebs.
A griller eating competition will be held at 3 p.m. Krebs explained that a griller is a sausage, but shaped like a hot dog. “That will be a lot of fun,” said Krebs, who noted the contest was inspired by the company’s participating in scrapple-eating competitions held at the Ephrata Fair. “We are looking for contestants,” she noted, adding that a free T-shirt will be given to each entrant.
Food trucks located at the event will sell items ranging from pizza,

“Doug’s Fight Is Our Fight” is the theme of a fundraiser being planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Gap VFW by the family of Doug Arment, a 1993 graduate of Pequea Valley High School, who has esophageal cancer. The event will include a cornhole tournament and an outdoor movie.
Event organizers include Jennette Bahn, who is Doug’s sister-in-law. She said the fundraiser is being modeled after

The annual HOPE International Golf Outing isn’t a professional golf tournament. But the players will be playing for money - the kind that can change people’s lives.
“Money can be used as a tool, as long as it can be used in the right way,” said Jeff Rutt, founder and chairman of HOPE International. “The power of
enterprise is learning to be responsible. It allows charities to be very healthy. There’s power in money being used in the right way.”
The 24th edition of the HOPE International Golf Outing will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 13, at three courses: Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon; Wyncote Golf Club, 50 Wyncote Drive, Oxford; and the Woodlands

“The vibe is going to be very much about engagement and learning more about the purpose (of HOPE International),” said Rutt of the atmosphere of the day. “It’s all about fellowship and getting to know others who are like-minded. If I’m engaged in some sort of outreach, it creates a different type of purpose. It’s not about how good of a score I can get.”
Organizers of the HOPE International Golf Outing would like to draw up to 375 players total to the three courses. In conjunction with two separate sister golf outings, the goal is to raise a total of $1.4 million for the work of the faith-based nonprofit,

Nonprofits that will be represented include the Clinic for Special Children, Intercourse Fire Company, The Factory Ministries, the 4-H Swine Club, the Intercourse Lions Club, the Intercourse Library, and the Pequea Valley Education Foundation. which includes lending programs, Christ-centered financial training, saving programs, discipleship and Bible-based training - all of which possess the power to break cycles of poverty and to change the plights of future generations.
Over the 27 years of its existence, HOPE International has raised $280 million and lent $1.7 billion.
“There’s poverty everywhere, but it’s all relative,” said Rutt. “There are needs everywhere. We’d love to come alongside everyone. ... We believe a holistic approach is really impactful. Here’s a quote from one of our clients: ‘It’s really hard to focus on your prayer life when you’re hungry.’”
Headquartered at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, HOPE International has a reach that has steadily expanded over its existence to provide services for those in need around the globe. HOPE International conducts 15 major regional fundraising events annually.
Since its inception in 2000, the HOPE International Golf Outing has raised more than $7 million for the mission.
“Yes, it’s golf, but it’s not about the golf,” said Rutt. “It’s what happens from the golf. While we’re having fun hitting that little white ball, we’re looking to drive out poverty in all of its forms. Twenty-three years ago, we started using golf as a vehicle. It just kind of stuck. We found it was a good way to engage sponsors.”
“I think some of the sponsors’ motivation comes from the why behind the mission,” continued Rutt. “There’s a large network of folks learning about HOPE International. Hopefully, there’s going to be some folks who are interested in going on trips. The camaraderie and fun of the day is just sprinkled in. We’re going to bond together over a great cause.” For additional information about HOPE International, go to www.hopeinternational.org.
“The plan is to make (Baconfest) an annual event,” shared Krebs, adding, “It’s a group event. We want to put the focus on the community. There are so many of us working on this.”

Cornhole tournament
activities that the family typically enjoys. “(Doug) loves riding his motorcycle, tending to his flower beds and garden and making memories with family and friends. We (chose) cornhole because it would be a fun, outdoor type of game, and we chose the movie night because we do several outdoor family movies at my sister’s house,” Bahn said, noting that her oldest sister, Jodi, is married to Doug and her middle sister is Jennifer. “The family goes to (Jennifer’s) house to have the outdoor movie nights.”
Doug, who works as a fabricator
at HC Quality Doors in Intercourse, was diagnosed with aggressive esophageal cancer in late May. He has been married to Jodi for 27 years, and they have three children. He recently began cancer treatments to help fight the disease. “It has already been a difficult journey, but his fight is just starting,” said Bahn. She emphasized that all proceeds from the upcoming event will go to Doug’s medical bills.
Registration for the tournament will begin at 11 a.m. and play will start at noon in the grove behind the Gap VFW building. Players of all skill levels are welcome, and the top three teams will win cash prizes.
“We will have four games in a round robin (format) and double elimination after that,” explained Bahn. “Each team is guaranteed to play at least six games.” She noted that Ken Smith, owner of Berks County Cornhole, will supply the boards and bags and oversee the tournament.
Concessions will be open throughout the day offering lunch, dinner and snack items, including Bricker’s Famous French Fries.
All teams that register to play in the cornhole tournament by Saturday, Aug. 17, will be entered to win an exclusive preregistration prize basket that includes a set of pickleball paddles and pickleballs; two Yeti Rambler tumblers; and gift cards to Starbucks, Panera Bread and Subway. “Only teams that preregister will enter to win, although anyone can register for the tournament up until the event starts on Aug. 24,” noted Bahn.
Teams can preregister for the cornhole tournament by emailing dougsfightisourfight@gmail.com or by visiting www.scoreholio.com, choosing “Find a Tournament,” selecting cornhole and then searching for “Doug’s Fight Is Our Fight Tournament Against Cancer.”
Those who attend the event will also have an opportunity to win prizes, including a 55-inch smart
television, a six-piece cordless tool set, handbags and gift cards. Winners will be chosen through a random drawing following the tournament. The event will conclude at dusk - approximately 7:45 p.m. - with the screening of “Kung Fu Panda.” Concessions will also be open during the movie. Tickets for the movie can be purchased in advance by emailing dougsfightisourfight@gmail.com. There will be informational tables about the family and esophageal cancer at the event. “As long as (Doug) is up to it, he will be there,” Bahn added.
Community members are invited to attend the fundraiser even if they are not part of the tournament. “They can come for a chance to win prizes. We will have 100 gift items (to win),” said Bahn. “Or they could just come for the movie. They can come to any of it or all of it.”
The VFW is located at 4988 Lincoln Highway, Gap. For complete details, visit the Facebook event page “Cornhole Tournament & Outdoor Movie Benefit.”
Documentary screening set

showcases the physical and mental fortitude required to compete in RAAM. It also spotlights the team’s commitment to raising awareness of child trafficking.
The majority of the cyclists who participated are from Lancaster County; the participants were Nate Eakin, Matt Lapp, Tom Jordan, Craig Whiteford, John Glick, Kevin Quinter, Merv Beiler, and Jeff Conaway. They trained beginning in the fall of 2022, logging hundreds of hours of stationary cycling, road riding, and strength training. The team secured second place in 2023 and plans to ride again in 2025 to fight against child trafficking.
The idea for ZOE’s participation in RAAM ignited when Brad Ortenzi, ZOE’s Eastern U.S. regional director and team manager, visited ZOE’s campus in Thailand to meet the young trafficking survivors in 2014.
Ortenzi also serves as the coordinator of Lancaster and Berks County’s Human Trafficking Task Force. ZOE East Coast has established partnerships with county agencies and organizations to identify those vulnerable to trafficking. Through these collaborative efforts, ZOE aims to assist trafficking victims and at-risk youths in the southeast Pennsylvania region, offering a range of services, such as support for law enforcement during sting operations, trauma-informed activities, mentorship, and access to resources.
ZOE International is a global organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking through prevention, rescue, and restoration programs. More information can be found at www.gozoe.org.
