Hooper, mother to Riley, 11, and McKinley, 9, both Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) students, first participated in the Strengthening Families program with Riley at the Together Community Center in the fall of 2022. She was so impressed with the program, she is planning to take part again in the spring. “I will do this as long as they are offering it,” said Hooper. “You can always gain more (from the program).”
Strengthening Families is a seven-week, evidence-based program developed 30 years ago by Iowa State University for families with children ages 10 to 14. In PVSD, the program is fully funded by a Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health grant and offered by a partnership between Lancaster General Health, The Factory Ministries, and COBYS.
Hooper first connected with The Factory through Anna Beasley,
Changing family dynamics
director of adult advocacy. The family benefited from some of the ministry’s resources and took part in Lunch & Learns held in the summer of 2022.W hen Hooper was invited to attend Strengthening Families, she was excited about the prospect. “It sounded like something good to try,” she said. “We came to the introduction program, where they have a guest speaker, and the kids get to hear a little bit about what will go on with them.”
The aim of Strengthening Families is to help parents and caregivers learn nurturing skills they may use to support their children and to teach them how to effectively discipline and guide their children. It also aims to give youths a healthy future orientation and an increased appreciation of their parents and caregivers and to teach them skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure. Hooper had a few specific goals with regard to communication and discipline. “I was thinking about our communication and how much it mattered,”

Sally Winchell is senior queen
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“When I commit to a goal, I want to see it through to the end,” said Sally Winchell, who was crowned Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023 in Harrisburg on June 4. “With this pageant, I was all in.”
Sally first heard of the pageant last February when a friend, who served as Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America in 2021, invited her to a meet-and-greet. Sally met the current and past Pennsylvania queens, along with one who was a national winner. “It was fact-finding,” reported Sally, who noted any lady who has reached the age of elegance
- age 60 and up - is eligible to take part.
An application, including biographical information, was necessary to compete. Sally explained that the purpose is to give older women a “chance to display their inner beauty, talent, and elegance.” She added that the pageant honors the achievements of senior women and motivates and encourages them to utilize their full potential and share their positive outlook on life with others. “It’s not just a beauty pageant,” she pointed out. “It’s more about your achievements, goals, and what you stand for. It gave me an opportunity to reflect.”

Woman of many talents
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Dore’Ann Weaver has always had artistic talents. Over the years, those skills have expanded into a variety of areas, including costume and set design and construction and painting a scrim backdrop the size of a gymnasium floor. However, Dore’Ann was a little unsure of exactly how to use those talents when she received a call in July of 2022 asking her to serve as art director for a DBM Films production called “Little Heroes.” “I said, ‘I am from theater. What does that mean?’” recalled Dore’Ann. Fortunately, her friend Robert Amaya,
who played the Snake King in the movie “Courageous,” was able to provide background information.
“Little Heroes” focuses on four young friends who discover something is not right at their usual swimming hole. They soon uncover a mystery that involves a local factory owner and the mayor. The movie was filmed in Chesapeake City, Md., and North East, Md., over a 12-day period. A premiere was held in Baltimore on June 8 and on June 9, the film was shown again as part of a celebration in Chesapeake City. “Little Heroes” can be purchased from DBM Films or on Amazon.

Farm life
Recollections of a historical society member
Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township
Neither my mother nor my father knew anything about farming when they bought a working farm in 1936. They made friends with the neighboring Italian truck farmers who took a delight in teaching both of them the intricate art of growing vegetables. A neighbor farmer also showed them how to first buy a cow, then care for it and milk it. Many of these activities fell to my mother since Pop was away at his factory job in Philadelphia most of the day.
In the first spring, the neighbor showed Pop how to prepare the fields with his second-hand tractor. (The
neighbors still used a horse.) Later, the women showed Mother how to seed, weed and harvest the product of all that labor. Mother also read every government pamphlet available on how to grow and process vegetables. She even canned meat and milk. By the time World War II began, she had mastered cooking on the wood stove so well that we were taking baked goods to the market each Saturday, along with dressed chickens.

In the late 1930s, most of the surrounding farms did not have electricity. My father, a licensed electrician, was contracted with Pennsylvania Gov. Gifford Pinchot’s electrification program to begin to remedy this. Pinchot’s administration had set up a work program that employed out-of-work young men for three month stints to do much-needed public services. This program was so successful that President Franklin D. Roosevelt took notice and worked with Pinchot to frame a new program on the same lines, first in New York, then nationally. Thus was formed the Works Progress Administration (WPA). My father had worked with the Pinchot Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program in Chester County, planting trees in the Malvern area. The CCC eventually became a national program also.
During World War II, from 1941 to 1945, a blackout was imposed every night, and wardens were appointed to check around the neighborhood for

with tar paper “shades” that could be turned up during the day and dropped at night. Then, heavy curtains were drawn across the whole window well for total darkness. The daily sun made the tar paper emit a very distinctive odor, which even in 2023, I can still remember.
Regrettably, when the peace treaty was finally signed, my father sold the farm, and we moved back to suburban Philadelphia.

said Hooper, who plans to take part in the next program with her younger daughter, McKinley. “I was concerned about the way (Riley) feels,” she said, adding she saw her daughter open up more during the second session. In matters of discipline, Hooper noted that she learned about handing out positive reinforcement along with consequences for negative behaviors. “The program gave me the understanding that there need to be limits and boundaries and open conversations,” Hooper said. “(These) show (my children) that they are valued and part of a unit and that we have to interact.”
Each program begins with a meal where parents and children can meet and talk to members of the other families attending. The families share information and
techniques with each other. “I got new ideas and suggestions for things other families are doing,” recalled Hooper. Following the meal, the children and parents are separated for an hour of programming before joining together again for the conclusion.
Hooper noted that the program has changed family dynamics for her and her girls. “Maybe they didn’t get (something right) this time, but they can get it if you keep giving them opportunities,” she said. “For kids to know that they always have the chance to get it right is a big thing, and having the chance to teach that as a parent as opposed to someone else teaching it is a big reward.”

Awards presented to Scout leaders
The Susquehanna District, a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, held its annual awards dinner on June 14 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Willow Street. The annual dinner recognizes leaders who have exemplified the Scouting ideals and program in their Scout units or leadership within the district.
The District Award of Merit is the top volunteer award the district can present. Chet Bowen from Troop 84 and Fred Frey from Troop 146 received this award at the dinner.
Bowen was the committee chair for Pack 93 for six years and has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 84 for five years and a member of Crew 162 for two years. He is also a unit commissioner. He is currently the Pennsylvania Dutch Council spring sales chair and the district committee membership chair. He was a Wood Badge staff member in 2022. He has served in many other
volunteer positions within the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, as well. Bowen has been involved with Scouting almost his entire life, and he has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, is a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow, and received the James E. West award.
Frey is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 146, the committee chair of Pack 146 and an assistant roundtable commissioner for the district, a role in which he is instrumental in creating recruitment materials and incentives. He also serves on staff for the College of Commissioner Science and often
volunteers for district events like the Klondike Derby. Frey has earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of Commissioners Science, Arrowhead Honor as a commissioner, and Scouter’s Key, and he is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow.

Jay’s Handyman Service
Dore’Ann grew up in Nashville, Tenn., where her parents were friends with set designers. As the daughter of a pastor and music director, she was involved in live church productions. After moving to Ephrata when she was 13, Dore’Ann worked on painting the set for Ephrata High School’s production of “Oklahoma!” “I learned (so much) from being part of that,” said Dore’Ann, who temporarily shelved her love of theater to work in the optical business. She rediscovered that passion after she married her husband, Craig, and the two became involved in the Ephrata Church of the Nazarene’s productions. In 1994, she and Craig built the front of a church in a barn, and she painted a huge stained-glass window perched on scaffolding while expecting her first child.
Around 2012, she began sewing costumes for Cavod Community Theatre productions. Dore’Ann first became involved after her son Alex won a part in “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” directed by Stan Deen. “I am a shopper whom you can give a dime to, and I will make it look like I spent $1,000,” said Dore’Ann. “I am able to tear things apart and put them back together.” To prove her talents to Deen, she created a Glenda the Good Witch costume for less than $20 in two days. Looking back, Dore’Ann credits Deen for giving her the confidence to succeed at her craft. “Stan always brought the best out in us,” she said.
In 2018, the Weaver family moved to Stoudtburg Village in Adamstown, where Dore’Ann opened French Twist Events, planning to host tea parties, murder mystery dinner parties, bridal showers,
and more, but the business was just getting started when COVID-19 restrictions hit. Undaunted, Dore’Ann went to work on local productions, including Lancaster Bible College’s “Ruth” and “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound, and she painted sets for Servant Stage.
Dore’Ann’s heart is to see
family-friendly movies made locally. “Amaya is working with state legislators to bring more film (production) into the state of Pennsylvania,” she said, noting she has joined in his efforts. “(Amaya) recognizes that we have a very rich area to make films,” she noted, pointing out the talent available in the local area.

The “Pressure Canning” workshop will be held on Monday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., and the “Introduction to Drying” workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The programs will take place at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in home food preservation. Canning and drying are methods of food preservation that allow people to enjoy seasonal foods all year long. While these methods of home food preservation have existed for centuries, much has been learned about the science behind safe canning and drying methods.
In the upcoming workshops, Penn State Extension educators will explain the scientific reasoning behind today’s recommended methods for preserving products while dispelling food preservation myths and unsafe practices of the past.
In the canning worship, attendees will learn the science behind pressure canning recommendations as well as the basics of using a pressure canner based on current USDA canning guidelines. Pressure canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as vegetables and meats. To register for the workshop by Monday, Aug. 14, visit www.extension.psu.edu/ home-food-preservation -pressure-canning or call 877-345-0691.
In the drying workshop, participants will learn various methods of drying, including oven drying, using a dehydrator, microwave drying and air drying; pretreatment steps such as blanching and using anti-darkening soaking solutions to ensure a quality product;f ood safety considerations when processing jerky; what to look for when buying a dehydrator; and ideas for using dehydrated foods.

FRIDAY,
Senior queen frompg 1
Looking back, Sally noted that many of her achievements helped her build toward taking part in the pageant. Raised in Bowmansville, she moved to Terre Hill as an adult and was active in New Holland, teaching at a local dance studio and later owning Class Act Dance Studio. She became a personal trainer and started her own nutrition counseling business, and she competed as a female body builder. In 2012, Sally moved to
the Millersville area with her husband, George, and she is employed at Bright Side Opportunities Center specializing in senior health andfitness.
Sally said that the pageant included a brief interview with the judges; a talent competition, for which she performed a professionally choreographed jazz dance; and an evening gown competition, during which each contestant presented her philosophy of life. Writing her philoso-

phy intrigued Sally. “When I was preparing I spent a lot of time thinking about why I was put on this Earth. What do I do? What do I represent?” she said. In the allotted 35 seconds, Sally discussed her daily chances to motivate and inspire others through strength training and healthy eating. “(Those are) the keystone to healthy senior years,” she said. “We need not accept what we think old age should look and feel like. We need to be strong, energetic, and engaged in life.” Sally noted she
is proud of what she wrote. “It’s what I live,” she said. “I live to bring a better life to others.”
When Sally was named Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023, she received a crown and a sash to wear during public appearances. She will represent the state in the national competition in Atlantic City, N.J., from Sunday, Oct. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 19. Sally is available to speak to women’s groups or to help with events.
