Musical Endeavor Brothers To Raise Funds For SWAN

hen three musical brothers are assigned a summer project, it is only natural that they would decide to hold a concert. In the case of Noah, Lucas, and Marcus Unruh, who live in the Conestoga Valley School District, that concert will benefit SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), which offers free music lessons to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students affected by parental incarceration. The Unruh brothers will display their musical talents with a little help from their mother, Anu, and younger sister, Liesl, when they hold a fundraiser for SWAN to “give music” and “empower dreams,” according to the event flyer, at Gospel of Grace Community Church, 45 N. Kinzer Road, Kinzers, at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11. A mix of music, including gospel tunes, will be played on a variety of instruments. Admission will be

W

charged, and a meal, including a sub sandwich from Pasquale’s, chips, and a beverage, will be offered for a nominal cost. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact Noah at noah.unruh@gmail.com or Lucas at lucas.unruh@gmail.com by Friday, Aug. 5, for reservations. Noah, age 13, will play the saxophone and piano in the concert. “There’s a piece called ‘Irish Wedding,’ and it’s the longest piece I have ever played, and I will be playing that,” said Noah. Lucas, who is 12, plays the piano, violin, ukulele, and guitar. He will play a hymn, and he will play the guitar to accompany Anu, Marcus, and Liesl when they sing “Do-ReMi” from “The Sound of Music.” Marcus, age 8, is a pianist. He reported that his favorite song to play is the “William Tell Overture.” Lucas explained that when the family discussed the idea of holding a concert to raise funds for SWAN, he responded, “Why not? It sounds like fun.” See SWAN pg 4

UDS Plans Annual Golf Tournament BY ANN MEAD ASH

Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, especially likes coming to work on Wednesdays because that is when Quincy, a UDS ambassador dog, spends the day with her. “(Quincy) is the best dog,” said Breece. “This morning, I dropped a paper towel, and he picked it up and gave it to me.” Quincy was trained to be a full-service dog, but health issues kept him from that role. “There is something here for everybody on Wednesday nights,” said Heather Ensslen, who grew up attending Awana at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) and now serves as one of the coordinators of the program. Ensslen noted that Awana clubs are available for children from age 2 through sixth grade, and a youth group and adult prayer meeting are also offered on Wednesday evenings from September through May. Awana will kick off at CMBC, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m., with a program by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. The interactive and educational animal show will feature live snakes, as well as lizards and turtles. The fundraiser grew out of Anu’s interest in keeping her sons learning and productive during the months when there is no school. “My mom came up with the idea of doing a project each summer,” explained Noah, who added that he and his brothers interviewed Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN in preparation for the project. “Before (undertaking this project), we knew (SWAN) helped traumatized kids in Lancaster County by teaching them music,” said Noah. “We learned that their parents might be in prison,” he added, noting that Vuolo the brothers call her “Miss

and cupcakes will be served. Awana clubs will meet from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. weekly from Wednesday, Sept. 7, through Wednesday, May 10. Awana clubs are divided into four age groups. The group for 2-year-olds is called Puggles. Children ages 3 to 5 attend Cubbies. Children in kindergarten to second grade go to Sparks, and thirdthrough sixth-graders go to Truth and Training, called T&T. Awana opens with a whole group gathering for song, and then the clubs break into smaller groups to go over workbooks and memory verses. Each club has large group time and a game time that Ensslen called “unique.” The Cubbies also have puppet and craft time. Ensslen explained that the Forgotten Friend show ties into an animal theme that will be featured regularly throughout the two semesters of the program. “One night each month will be Critter Card night, and (club members) will have trading cards they can collect,” she said. “We will talk about a couple different animals and what we can learn about the Bible and God by studying the animals.” She added that when attendees amass five Critter Cards, they can adopt a stuffed animal. Along with the animal theme nights, Ensslen said some special theme nights are planned based on activities that have proven popular in the past. “Last year, we did a drive-in movie night,” said Ensslen, who explained that club members decorated cardboard boxes to look like cars and then brought them to (Awana) to sit in while watching a movie on an inflatable screen in the gym. Another theme night is neon night, which involves neon clothing and glow items. “We put black lights in the gym, and we play games,” ex plained Ensslen, who also described a weekend event that involves adults as well as children. “ We do a Grand Prix, which is a Saturday family event in February,” she said, explaining that the pinewood derby offers racing for both children and adults. “It gets a little bit competitive,” she said. Readers who would like more information on the Awana kickoff event may visit https://calvarymonument.org /ministries/children.

Ambassador dogs represent UDS by visiting sponsors and doing demonstrations, among other jobs. Recently, Quincy posed for promotional photos at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, to help advertise the annual golf tournament to benefit the program. The tournament will be held on Friday, Aug. 26, beginning at 7 a.m. Sponsorship and registration details may be found at https://udservices .org/uds-service-dogs-golf -tournament-2022. UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. UDS program trainers Janna Barley and Lorrie Snyder work together to match dogs with clients and help the canines learn the spe-

cific skills for that role. In addition to full-service dogs, UDS trains companion dogs that work with clients at home. Breece explained that these dogs do not wear a vest or have the same public access rights as service dogs, but they make significant contributions to an individual’s independence. Barley pointed out that Oliver is a service dog that was placed in the home of a woman with mobility issues. “Oliver can open a sliding glass door for her and close it again, and he can fetch anything she has dropped,” she explained. The need for facility dogs has “exploded” since 2016, according to Breece. Secondary trainer

Susan Vollmar works with puppy trainer and breeder Kristy Conrad to place facility dogs, mostly in schools. “For our last fiscal year, we added 18 schools to our waiting list,” said Breece. “(Facility dogs) have a lot of the same training (as service dogs),” she said. Vollmar noted that dogs work with handlers from the facility, who receive training at UDS and at the school. She noted that dogs can mediate a student crisis, often helping to de-escalate a student who might otherwise have to be sent home. Facility dogs also serve as nonjudgmental “read” dogs, helping students who struggle with reading to practice and gain confidence.

Breece explained that UDS trains Labradors because the dogs learn quickly and will change allegiance easily. The organization is always seeking funding for the care and training of puppies. “We are bringing in 14 to 18 new puppies each year, and our current waiting list for facility dogs working in Lancaster and York counties has reached 20 as well as our having a healthy waiting list for mobility service dogs,” she explained, noting that puppies may be sponsored by businesses, employees of businesses, churches, or other groups. More information about the services the organization provides may be found at www.udservices.org.

Gish explained that contributors to the plan included representatives of local government, leaders from the Amish community and other area residents. The plan aligns with Lancaster’s Countywide Action Plan and Pennsylvania’s Chesapeake Bay watershed implementation plan, noted Harry Campbell, CBF science policy and advocacy director in Pennsylvania. Funding for

development of the plan was provided by the Richard King Mellon Foundation. Sens. Bob Casey and Ben Cardin had earlier secured $2.18 million for the Pequea plan. It was the first time in a decade that senators were able to request funds for specific projects in annual appropriations bills. Gish and Caitlin Glagola, CBF watershed coordinator in Pennsylvania, are now developing new watershed restoration plans for the Upper Conestoga River in Lancaster, Berks, and Chester counties, as well as Marsh Creek in Centre County.
