Bringing pickleball to the park
Two playgrounds refurbished in Intercourse
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“There were a lot of local residents who were excited about adding pickleball courts to the park,” said Leacock Township board member Mike Sensenig. Township board members responded to requests for pickleball facilities by building two courts in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville. The courts were officially opened for demonstrations and play during Heritage Days, which were held June 16 and 17. “We ended up using funds from Heritage Days to pay for it,” noted Sensenig. “The funds from (that event) are primarily used for the park.” A pickleball tournament is being considered as a planned activity during the 2024 Heritage Days.
Construction started in the winter of 2023 with Leacock Township employees preparing the site, which is adjacent to the Old Philadelphia Pike park entrance. “The excavation
and putting the stones in (was completed),” said Sensenig. “Then a contractor came in to do the painting and build the fence.”
“We did all the groundwork and got it leveled,” said Frank Howe, secretary and treasurer for Leacock Township, “but to get a perfectly level court so there are no puddles when it rains, we got professionals to take care of that.” Howe noted that Lancaster Asphalt Systems, Inc., the company that completed the work, builds pickleball courts internationally.
Pickleball is a sport that combines tennis, badminton, and pingpong. It can be played inside or outside on a court the same size as a badminton court with a modified tennis net. Equipment includes a paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it. Played by singles or doubles, the sport is known for appealing to people of all ages and skill levels. The sport was invented in the 1960s by Joel Pritchard, a Congressman from Washington state, and Bill Bell, a See Pickleball pg 3

Ministry helps women around the world
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Kathy Baker, who oversees the LuoPad ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in New Holland, has an unusual request. “We are asking the community to donate gently used towels,” said Baker, who has already asked parish members for donations. “They can be any size towels, hand towels, or washcloths,” she continued. “We can’t use bathmats because they are too thick.”
Baker is seeking the towels for a group of about a dozen women who meet at the church, 150 Water St.,
New Holland, the last three Thursdays of each month in the morning. The group creates LuoPads, washable, reusable feminine hygiene pads, for Unto, an organization that provides humanitarian aid to developing countries. Unto has a Global Logistics Center in Mount Joy.
“This is our little workshop,” said Baker, gesturing around the room at the church where volunteers were hard at work creating the pads. Baker explained that the kits the women complete include about six finished pads, a washcloth, two pairs of underwear, and more in a

homes.
This is the fourth year for the event, which takes place on the property of Merv King from King Construction in New Holland. “(King) is a supporter, and he is letting us use his property for the fourth year,” said Chris Straka, CEO of For One Life.
Straka estimates that more than 2,000 people attended last year’s event. “Our tent seats about 900, and it was full both nights, and there were lawn chairs all around,” he stated.
This year’s performers are Amos Raber, Country Road Ramblers, David Miller, John Schmid, Dan and Amanda Esh, The Churchmen and The Deanes. “We wanted to make sure everyone has a really good experience, so we hired (professional audio and visual technicians),” noted Straka. “It is a professional-quality sound system, with a 17foot LED wall to augment the activities.”
For children, there will be bounce houses and games, a dunk tank and arts and crafts. Adults will be able to try their hand at ax throwing. “We are dedicating a large amount of space for the children’s area,” said Straka. “We are doing activities with kids on Friday night and all day Saturday, so families feel comfortable coming and spending an evening with their kids.”
There will be a variety of food trucks on hand, including Skip’s Food Truck, Welder’s Steak Shack, Swirls of Delight, Character Coffee, Auntie Anne’s, Anytime Acai and Country Smokehouse Barbecue and Catering.
Straka noted that volunteers are utilized to ensure that the event runs smoothly. “We started planning right after last year’s event,” he said. “We have a core committee of 10 people, and we have 30 to 40 volunteers parking cars and (performing other duties).”
Proceeds from Music on the Mountain will support For One Life’s projects in Northeast India, which include youth and child development, education and life care. “Michael Esh, the founder of For One Life, came to know about this area through Bibles For The World 20 years ago,” Straka explained. “He did work for them and fell in love with the area and has gone back ever since.”

The courts have a few rules, including requiring proper footwear and taking turns. Players are limited to finishing their current game if someone is waiting. “There’s hardly been a day I haven’t seen someone playing. It has been received very well,” said Sensenig, who noted that pickleball games progress more quickly than tennis. Courts are open from dawn to dusk.
Juanita Petersheim said she plays at the courts each Thursday with friends. She noted that she would love to see more courts in the area.
In addition to the new courts, the playground at
Community Park was refurbished in 2022. Changes included new playground equipment and foundation.
“We put in a soft, rubber (surface),” said Sensenig. “We removed the mulch
that was dirty and hard to maintain.” Similar upgrades were made to Civic Park, located behind the Intercourse Fire Company, 10 N. Hollander Road, Gordonville, in 2023. “The playground there has new equipment and a new sur-
Mental Health First Aid training set
Lancaster General Hospitala member of Penn Medicine
Lancaster General Health - in partnership with Community Services Group (CSG) and Pequea Valley School District, will offer a free Youth Mental Health First Aid Training on Friday, Aug. 11. The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Factory Ministries, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. This training is designed to teach family members, teachers, school staff members, neighbors, health and human services workers, and others how to help someone ages 12 to 18 who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or crisis.
During this training, participants will learn how to identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges; and interact with a child or adoles-
cent in crisis and connect him or her with help. They will also be introduced to expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care, and the impact of social media and bullying.
The training is part of the Mental Health First Aid Community Collaborative, which is supported by a grant to Lancaster General Hospital from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The grant supports 100% of the project costs, budgeted for five years at $125,000 per year.
The grant provides mental health training for adults and youths through the Mental Health First Aid training, an evidence-based program that provides skills and resources necessary to recognize and address mental illness, improve pathways to services, and help to reduce the stigma around mental health.

Teepa Snow to return to Lancaster
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Melody Karick, memory care educator and consultant with Garden Spot Village, is well-acquainted with internationally known dementia expert Teepa Snow. “I was blessed to be mentored by Teepa,” said Karick. “She does a great job of explaining (concepts and techniques). No matter what level of awareness you are at, she is easy to understand.”
Snow will return to Lancaster for a second set of seminars after first offering a well-attended program in 2022. Sessions will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The morning session will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
The morning session is designed for first responders, business organizations churches, and families. Snow will focus on discerning signs of dementia and providing safe and comfortable spaces. The afternoon session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it
will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.
Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed a trademarked model for understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.
“One of the things she really stresses is the positive approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach

required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained. “Are they in fight, fright, flight?” Next, Karick said, caregivers should use their words, tone of voice, and facial expressions to make it clear that they stand in support. “Make it known you are on their side,” she said.
“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with dementia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,”
she said.
For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not.
There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendlylancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

bag. Pads come in large, medium, and small sizes, and each is completed with a snap. “Unto labels them and ships them by the skid. (LuoPads are) the most
requested item from Unto,” noted Baker Baker explained that each pad begins when the form is traced on a towel and cut out before being shipped
back to Unto for sewing. When the pieces are returned to the group, the outside is created from flannel and stuffed with the towel piece. “Then we sew all the way around and in the middle to make it more secure,” said Baker, who said that the snap is added at Unto. Baker estimated that the ladies complete 10 large boxes a month.
The group, which is mostly made up of church members, has been meeting to make LuoPads for about 18 months. In addition to towels, Baker said the group would welcome new volunteer members. Individuals who are interested in donating towels or volunteering may email kb1clown@ gmail.com or call 484888-3772.

Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Route 322 and Route 897 in East Earl, has held a peach festival each August for many years. During COVID-19 restrictions, the event was toned down to include only church members and church attendees, but in 2022, the public festival returned.
For 2023, the Peach Fest, as it is now called, will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. As in the past, the event will feature a flea market, book sale, silent auction, and bake sale, along with food items for purchase and free ice cream for children.
The menu for the Peach Fest features a variety of foods but focuses on peaches, with peach-flavored items available for purchase throughout the event. Breakfast items will include pancakes with or without peach topping and whipped cream, sausage and egg casserole, and coffee. “The casserole is back by request,” said Barbara MacMaster,
one of the organizers of the fest, who noted that the casserole had been offered in the past but was not available at the 2022 event. Lunch will feature hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut,

A baked goods table will include homemade peach pies, as well as a variety of other pies, cakes, brownies, cookies, a variety of flavors of whoopie pies, and other baked treats.
Organizers of the event have been accepting book donations, and a number of genres will be represented, including summer reading books. “We have some World War II hardcover historical books,” said MacMaster. “They’re stories of real events.” An area of free children’s books will be set up for young ones.
Church members have collected yard sale items that can be purchased by donation at the fest, and
a table of costume jewelry will be set up, along with a table of craft items made by members of the congregation.
Organizer Barbara Zook said that inside flea market vendors will include a jewelry maker and a table of sports-themed items such as wastebaskets and pillows. According to Zook, several outside flea market spaces will be available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis that morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. Individuals who have questions or are interested in reserving an inside vendor space may call Barb at 717656-6322.
This year’s silent auction will consist of at least 20 items, including themed baskets and gift certificates. Among the many theme baskets organizers expect will be a Thai basket, a Pepperidge Farm basket, and an Emma’s Popcorn basket.
Funds raised by the Peach Fest go to a number of causes, including the church’s Caring Fund and the general fund. A percentage will also be donated to Shiloh Youth Mission to further the work that Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Oxford is doing in the community.

There’s always something fresh going on with GOTR
BY JEFF FALK
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is always active, always evolving, always moving forward.
A national initiative designed to support the development of girls in the third through eighth grades with physical activities like running, GOTR has a mission that is seasonal in nature. On the heels of a successful spring campaign, the Lancaster chapter of GOTR is currently gearing up for its 10-week fall season, which will get underway on Monday, Sept. 11.
In addition, Girls on the Run recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.
“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a year-round effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all
starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”
Registration for GOTR’s fall campaign will run from Thursday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.
“My job is to ensure our program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”
GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district
City of Lancaster reschedules event
The City of Lancaster has announced Friday, Aug. 18, as the rescheduled date for Celebrate Lancaster. Originally scheduled for midJune, the event was postponed due to forecasted severe weather on the day of the event.
Celebrate Lancaster is the annual celebration of Lancaster city’s residents and cultures. The event features live performances, food vendors, local organizations and an array of unique vendors.
in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.
In the spring, GOTR involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.
“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”
“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added West. “It’s really important for the girls to look into the
coaches and see themselves. There aren’t really restrictions on who can be a coach, except that you must be in at least the ninth grade.”
West, who co-founded the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Girls on the Run in 2009, replaced Katie Sandoe as the program’s executive director. This past spring, GOTR served its 20,000th participant.
“We knew Lancaster County was going to be so accepting of the program,” said West. “Girls on the Run is about conflict resolution, making good choices, being a good friend. Lancaster is the perfect spot for Girls on the Run, but we do rely on the community’s support.”
For additional information about Girls on the Run or to register, go to www.gotr lancaster.org.
