“Iwouldrather have a small band with people who want to be here,” said Maddie Heverin, one of the drum majors of the 24-member Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band. While admitting that coordinating a show with a small band can be a challenge, Heverin added, “We are all happy to be here.”

Heverin and fellow drum major Kylee Worrell, director Rob Corrao, assistant director Michael Eckersley, and color guard director Jennifer Bilby gathered with eight color guard and 14 other musicians at the school from July 31 through Aug. 4 to practice the drill for this year’s program, “Breaking Ground.”

Students practiced from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Corrao said that the title “Breaking Ground” is based on the school district breaking ground for new intermediate and middle school

Fundraisers to benefit Christiana library

Providing free passes to area museums, helping maintain free use of computers and internet access for patrons, and supporting an aerobic drumming class, a knitting group and story times are just some of the programs that will benefit from upcoming fundraisers being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library and the library board. Events will include a golf tournament as well as a yard sale and chicken barbecue. The 14th annual library golf

tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 28, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. A light lunch will be provided at noon, and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, provided by Wayne Buckwalter Jr., will be served at the conclusion of the tournament. The single-player fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner and on-course beverages.

Preregistration is encouraged; registration forms are available at the library. Golfers may also register by calling 717-951-8713.

current,” said Corrao. Worrell said she is excited for audiences to see the fruits of the band’s labors, and she noted some standout moments in the show,

including having the student section shout the first line of Styles’ song, “As It Was,” “Come on, Harry. We want to say goodnight to you,” before the music begins. In the second

song, the lyrics include the word “duh,” and band members will stop playing to shout it at the appropriate time. Heverin pointed out that there is a break in Lizzo’s song

40 years of Awana

2023 program prepares to kick off

The Awana program at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) is not new. In fact, the Wednesday evening children’s activity will be entering its 40th year when it starts this fall. But organizers like Heather Ensslen help keep the program fresh for the more than 60 area children who attend on average. “Last year we did Critter Cards, and the children learned about animals and collected cards,” recalled Ensslen. “We had a lot of fun with that, so we wanted another yearlong theme.”

Walk-in registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, space permitting. Golfers may sign up with friends as a group of four or enter as an individual and be placed with a team.

There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closestto-the-pin, longest drive for men and for ladies and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and secondplace teams, and there will be a cash prize for a hole in one, compliments of Hershey Motors. There will also be door prizes, including gift cards from local businesses.

This tournament is designed for amateur golfers, and no prizes will be awarded to professionals.

“Last year, we had more than 50 golfers,” noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president. In addition to the programs already mentioned, a portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be used to replace the library’s sign. “This will be a big (ticket) item,” said Esworthy. “The (current) sign was not meant to be outside in the elements.”

The Friends will hold a yard

sale and chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 26. The yard sale at the library will begin at 8 a.m.; chicken halves prepared on-site by Randy Yoder will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The Friends’ Read Moore Book Store, which is located downstairs at the library, will be open during the yard sale.

“Yard sales will be held throughout Christiana that day,” said Esworthy, noting

that a variety of yard sale items have been donated by Friends members such as seasonal decor and kitchenware.

“If people want to bring items for us to donate to sell, they may drop them off at the library (during operating hours),” added Friends member Karen Woods, noting that all items must be clean and in good condition. No clothing or appliances will be accepted.

Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Hours of operation are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon. This year’s theme, “Around the World,” will be first explored when Awana holds a kickoff and registration event at the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. The experience will include an International Food Faire with up to 10 tables representing different countries, where volunteers will hand out information and food samples. Among the areas that will be represented are Mexico, Thailand, the Middle East, and Ghana, Africa. Students from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform as well.

Ensslen explained that the international theme is based on a study that showed more than 5 million children engage weekly in Awana’s Bible-focused, child discipleship ministries in a variety of countries. Awana will be held at the church each Wednesday from Sept. 6 to May 8, beginning at 6:40 p.m. each week. “We will (visit) a different country each month,” explained Ensslen, who noted that children will watch a video, talk about a country, and then collect a card, like a

passport, for that country. “If they earn so many by the end of the club year, they will receive an award,” said Ensslen.

Awana clubs are divided into four age groups. The group for 2-year-olds is called Puggles. Children ages 3 to 5 attend Cubbies. Children in kindergarten to second grade go to Sparks, and third- through sixth-graders go to Truth and Training, called T&T. Awana opens with a whole group gathering for song, and then the clubs break into smaller groups to go over workbooks and memory verses. Each club has large group time and a game time that Ensslen called “unique to that group.” The Cubbies also have puppet and craft time.

Along with the international theme, Ensslen said some special theme nights are planned based on activities that have proven popular in the past. One of those is a neon night, which involves neon clothing and glow items, and another involves children creating cards for church attendees who are

Community meal slated

The community is invited to a free hot meal, to be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3183 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The meal will be hosted by the church’s mission committee.

The mission committee will

hospitalized or homebound. “The kids loved making the cards, and people loved receiving the cards as well. Ensslen noted that the annual Grand Prix pinewood derby will be scheduled for a Saturday in February, as well.

It takes more than 40 adult volunteers to help set up, tear down, and shepherd the children who attend Awana. Ensslen noted that some volunteers have been serving the program for more than 30 years.

Those who plan to attend the Awana kickoff should visit https://calvarymonument.org /ministries/children. Individuals interested in helping with the International Food Faire may sign up at https:// tinyurl.com/5ekan6c3. Readers who have questions may email awana@calvary monument.org.

Freedom Life to host Courage Conference

717-687-6901 310

In partnership with TPUSA Faith, Freedom Life Church, 447 Noble Road, Christiana, will host the Courage Conference on Friday, Aug. 25, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to promote values of faith, freedom and family. The event will feature speakers from across the country.

The event headliner will be Brandon Tatum, who will speak on Aug. 25. Tatum is a former Tucson, Ariz., police officer and founder and CEO of four companies, including The Officer Tatum. He is also co-founder of the BLEXIT Foundation and author of “Beaten Black and Blue: Being a Black Cop in an America Under Siege.” Tatum has more than 3 million followers across a variety of platforms on social media.

Rob McCoy will help lead the Courage Conference alongside

where the band will pause and then all start playing together again. Lana Willenbrock will also perform a trumpet solo during that song.

To keep morale high, band leadership planned special dress-up days, which this year included Adam Sandler day, Tropical Tuesday, pink-out day, team jersey day, and crazy socks and hat day. Evening activities included miniature golf and a party.

The construction in an area adjoining the PVHS football field has made practice space tight for the marchers. Flexibility is key this year, according to Corrao, who noted that an adjacent field will be lined for the band to use while other activities are occurring on the football field. The challenge of finding practice space has not dampened the spirits of band members, according to Worrell. She said that band members are really enjoying the fun music

Freedom Life senior pastor Sam Masteller. McCoy is the senior pastor of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in California and cofounder of TPUSA Faith, an initiative of Turning Point USA. He has also served as the mayor of Thousand Oaks and as the Ventura County sheriff’s chaplain. McCoy will share his firsthand experiences of bringing faith and community service together in the public square.

The Courage Conference will also welcome Landon Starbuck to southcentral Pennsylvania. She is the founder and president of Freedom Forever, which is dedicated to protecting children from trafficking and exploitation. Starbuck left her career in music after uncovering the exploitation within the entertainment industry.

The following individuals will also present at the Courage Conference: Chad

Connelly, founder and president of Faith Wins and the Republican National Committee’s first-ever director of faith engagement; David Englehardt, pastor and attorney; Brittany Leboeuf, scientist and fitness educator, host of the “Heaven & Health” podcast; Troy Maxwell, pastor of Freedom House Church and author of “The Panic Room: Panic, Anxiety, and the Art of Lying to Everyone”; Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz; and Kurt Weaver, director of strategic partnerships, Pennsylvania Family Institute.

Admission to the event includes breakfast and lunch on Aug. 26. A meet-and-greet option is available on Aug. 25 for an add-on fee. For more information and to learn about discounted accommodations, visit www.freedom .life/courage-conf.

that Corrao chose for this year’s drill. “It’s the kind of music people know,” she said. “We’re having a good time with it, and it’s going well.”

The PVHS band will play at football games beginning with the first home game on Friday, Sept. 1, and will march in the New Holland Fair parade.

The forecast is fair for New Holland Farmers Day 2023

Coming off the successful celebration of the 90th New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair, president Paulene Redding and Kristie Overly, who handles exhibit premiums, began moving ahead for the 2023 event, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 7.

Last year, the fair’s first fair queen competition winner Kendell Moats placed in the top five in the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) Queen Contest in Hershey. This year, the competition will be open to young women from the ELANCO, Conestoga Valley, and Pequea Valley school districts. Young women who wish to enter may call 717-355-2529 for more information.

Special vendor and craft bingo events are held to raise money for the fair and specifically for the fair queen competition. A bingo takes place on the fifth Sunday of each month when a fifth Sunday occurs. The next event will be held at Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 29.

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

“We need people to come out and support that,” said Overly, who noted that bingo fundraisers are also planned for Sunday, March 31, and Sunday, June 30, in 2024.

The 2023 tug-of-war competition was opened up to members of church youth groups, sports teams, businesses, and more, and five teams took part, with Weaverland Valley Fire Company taking the top

spot. This year, prize amounts have increased to $2,000 and a $500 gift card to Yoder’s Country Buffet, plus trophies for the first-place winners; $1,000 plus trophies for second place; $750 plus trophies for third place; and $500 plus trophies for the fourth-place team. Each participating team that does not place will receive a consolation prize of $50. This year, the tug-of-war will be held across from the New Holland Farmers Day Association building on Franklin Street. Other venu changes include the flower exhibition, which will be held in the CrossNet Youth Center on Franklin Street, and the entertainment stage, which will move to Towne Centre Green. On Franklin Street between Roberts Avenue and Railroad Avenue, organizers are planning to hold a farmers market during the hours that the fair is open. “We want to fill that up that area to bring the farm back to the farm show,” said Redding, who noted that local vendors wishing to sell produce are being sought.

Volunteers are always needed for the fair. “Case New Holland sponsored volunteer shirts, so each volunteer will receive a commemorative shirt,” said Redding, who noted that volunteers who give two hours may attend the fair banquet and those who work four hours may bring a guest along.

Improvements to the fair building include new flooring and new window treatments in the office. Currently, the fair board is working to raise funds to add an elevator. The organization needs to raise $8,000

Freedom Academy expands offerings

Freedom Academy is gearing up for its second year offering preschool and homeschool cooperative classes for families in the community.

This year, Freedom Academy has extended its programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays to offer a greater variety of classes and allow students to enjoy more social interaction during a longer lunch and recess break. In addition, the kindergarten through third-grade class has been split into two smaller segments - kindergarten and first grade in one group and second and third grades in the otherto better engage with student learning levels.

New classes for the fall semester will include Number Ninjas for kindergarten and first-grade students; American history for grades two and

three; STEAMS (science, technology, engineering, art, math and Scripture) for grades four though six; creative arts for grades seven and eight; and economics and geometry for grades nine to 12. A complete list of classes is available at www.freedom.life/schedule.

Currently, 65 students are enrolled for the fall 2023 semester. There are still openings for preschool and grades nine through 12, while kindergarten through grade eight have limited spaces available.

The first day of classes will be on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Freedom Academy meets at Freedom Life Church, 447 Noble Road, Christiana. For more information, visit www.free dom.life/academy or email freedomacademy@freedom.life.

Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning

and community forestry.

“Why

We Should Be Making

Small

Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.

Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.

During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.

The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban

Farmers

The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.

The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees. To register, visit https://exten sion.psu.edu/education -format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”

Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communi-

cations for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes.

“They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has

been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

LeeP Productions has announced the fifth anniversary of its program “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham,” and its new, permanent residency at The Barn at Paradise Station.

The venue is the original early 1800s Pennsylvania bank barn on the property of the Red Caboose Motel and Casey Jones’ Restaurant, 312 Paradise Lane, Ronks. The barn has been transformed over the last 18 months into a venue that can accommodate weddings, corporate events, theatrical performances, concerts and more. Lighting and sound systems were designed by Stray Production Services of Lititz, and the barn has concert-quality

It is also fully ADA accessible and includes an internal elevator with doors that open on all five floors. On Sunday, Aug. 20, at 2 and 7 p.m., LeeP Productions will host special public performances of “Then Sings My Soul” at The Barn, where the production began on Aug. 18, 2018. The concert will feature well-known hymns and songs, including “How Great Thou Art,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “In the Garden,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” “My Tribute,” “Until Then,” “Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives.” The program will also feature the premiere of a new arrangement of “It Is Well,” written by area composer Tyler D. Hoover.

“Then Sings My Soul” features Ric Zimmerman, Kat Prickett and Sarah Poague, also known as the vocal trio Perfect Harmony. New Holland native Katrina King is the pianist.

LeeP Productions will also host special guest Wayne Atcheson, library historian for Billy Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, sharing personal memories and anecdotes of Graham’s life and ministry.

Lancaster County Postcard Club sets expo

We are not hoarders; we are sentimental creatures. We are not collectors; we are protectors of memories.

For many, postcards hold great value. They can be seen as monetized sentimentality.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will conduct its annual expo and show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Admission to the event is free.

Virginia and Washington, D.C. More than 100,000 postcards depicting scenes, vacation spots and roadside places like diners, hotels and motels, as well as some celebrating holidays and special occasions, will be made available for purchase.

“I’ve never seen so many postcards in one place,” said Smith, a 53-year-old resident of Wrightsville. “Some people have their favorite dealers. Everyone comes looking for different stuff. Most of them are there to buy, but there are also people from the community coming to sell their

“People collect multiple things for all different reasons,” said Gordon Smith, a member of the Lancaster County Postcard Club who’s organizing the expo. “It depends on what draws their interest. Some people collect postcards for the post marks from different post offices. Some people collect them for the stamps. The show is an opportunity for people to get together and talk about postcards and explore postcards.”

Postcards will be displayed on 45 tables - about 10 more than in 2022 - by 20 vendors or dealers, some from as far away as Maryland, New York, Delaware, Ohio, New Jersey,

families’ collections. But there are also people who are curious; they’re just taking it all in.”

Nearly 250 postcard collectors and aficionados are expected to attend the Lancaster County Postcard Expo. The expo is one of a handful of postcard shows conducted in Lancaster County at different times each year.

“(A postcard is) a card that the postal service will mail

without an envelope,” said Smith. “It used to be a way of communicating at the turn of the (20th) century. At that time, the mail went out three or four times a day. They didn’t have telephones. It was a short message and a way to keep in touch. It was just random conversation that you and I now have in person or over the phone.”

Smith said he possesses postcards that were post-

marked as far back as the 1870s.

“Some people make their own postcards,” said Smith. “I personally like the real photo postcards. It’s a picture of what happened there and then. It gives you a glimpse of what life was like at that specific moment.”

The Lancaster County Postcard Club recently celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its founding. A few years after its

founding, the club sponsored its inaugural Lancaster County Postcard Expo.

“Postcards are still being made,” said Smith. “You can find them at tourist areas. But they’re not being used as much as they used to be, probably because people now use phones or the internet.”

Woodcrest Retreat plans annual Archery Shoot

Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata, will hold its 14th annual 3D Benefit Archery Shoot on Saturday, Aug. 26. Archers of all ages are invited to test their skills on the course featuring a wide variety of animals and shooting angles.

During brunch at 10 a.m., attendees will hear from pastor Ken Witmer. Attendees will have chances to win door prizes donated by local businesses and will have time to peruse various exhibits.

The course will open at 7 a.m. and close during brunch and the speaker’s presentation before reopening again. In the afternoon, archers may shoot the course for a second time at a reduced rate.

Nearly 2,000 people attended camp at Woodcrest Retreat this summer. Funds raised

from the archery shoot will help to keep camper fees below cost. In addition to summer camp, Woodcrest offers retreat space for families, church groups, and business groups.

Separate registration fees, which include brunch, have

been set for adults and for youths under age 16. Registration is preferred for planning purposes, but walk-ins will be accepted. To register, visit www.woodcrestretreat.org/ events or call the camp office at 717-738-2233.
