Gap VFW is all about serving veterans and the community

Whilemany people know that the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a social club and a veterans’ service organization, the community may not realize that the VFW also supports local charities and provides activities that are open to the public.

Locally, Gap VFW Post 7418 offers weekly specials in its kitchen, karaoke and free family bingo. The post includes a canteen, pool tables, an outdoor eating area and a downstairs meeting room. The property, situated on approximately 10 acres, also offers an outdoor picnic grove and pavilion that the public may rent and a ball field.

The VFW offers membership to veterans, as well as social memberships. VFW members are veterans who have honorably served overseas in an area of foreign conflict. Those who are not eligible for VFW membership but are the parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, child or grandchild of a qualifying veteran can

apply for membership in the VFW Auxiliary.

“The post has approximately 123 regular members, which are people who served in conflict,” explained Lucinda Fisher, the steward of Post 7418, noting that members include Vietnam and Korean War veterans.

The post’s primary goal is to help veterans in need. Most recently, veterans were invited to the post to learn about their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits during a program held in July. “When a veteran needs help, they come to us. We can either give them help ourselves or we can steer them to where they can get the help,” said quartermaster Bob Charlesen.

The post supports local fire companies and other veterans’ organizations, and it participates in Wreaths Across America. In June, the post held a fundraiser to benefit Woerth it Hollow, which provides equine-assisted therapy to veterans and people with disabilities.

Seasonal activities are also offered. “This is a family-friendly (post),” said Charlesen. “You can See VFW pg 13

Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County are seeing stars

Science is all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.

The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.

Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in

the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great enjoyment from observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.

“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”

The club’s meetings consist of See AELC pg 3

“We want the greater community to know about us,” said Steve Heydt, greenhouse manager with Garden Spot Village (GSV). “We like to extend the knowledge of what we’re growing here to our outer community.”

“It’s a nice way to invite the community to see the greenhouse,” added Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment with GSV.

presentations and lectures on astronomy, and the last half-hour is typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and the club also participates in outreach events across Lancaster County and beyond.

Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.

“The goal is to get people interested in astronomy and what’s going on in space,” said Lugar, a 76-year-old resident of Lititz. “It’s about people who like to do observing getting together.”

The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon. But while we as a species know more about supernovas, eclipses and black holes than we did back then, there is seemingly an infinite amount of information about space that is still

left to discover.

“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources, but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”

As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen science-minded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public

Library about a decade ago.

“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s reached a point where it’s become a place for everyone.”

The AELC sponsors a telescope loan program at the Lititz Public Library. The kit contains telescopes and accessories. For additional information on the Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County, go to www.aelc.us.

teachers were male, but soon women, working for less pay, were hired since state-run schools depended on unpopular property taxes.

The U.S. was largely rural and agriculture-dominated, so most children needed little formal education to be able to run a farm, sell produce and buy the new machines that were making farming less physically demanding but more complicated. A basic education still provided all that those children needed to be successful. A few students went on to colleges to be able to move into higher-status circles.

States soon required teachers to have a modicum of instruction in teaching before being sent out in the field, though country schools still depended on recent eighthgrade graduates to teach the lower grades. Two-year normal schools were established to teach prospective educators. As time went by, many of these schools became real colleges and then universities

catering to other subjects to prepare leaders who were cognizant of the world beyond the farm and manufacturing work.

Education above eighth grade spread. High schools were set up, usually near the main city of the county or township. These schools began preparing boys and girls for jobs requiring more than the basic arithmetic, reading and writing. Higher math, science, public speaking and world history as well as critical thinking, debating and sports encouraged even higher learning. Young men and, later, young women attended college for degrees in the sciences, literature and mathematics as well as teaching.

As inventions pushed the new technologies into more parts of society, students began needing more and more education to compete in real life. There were still many who worked at simple jobs needing only the basics, but there was a burgeoning need

What do children need to know to succeed in adulthood? By the 1800s, people began thinking that all children should have at least some education. In 1834, Pennsylvania mandated public schooling be provided for all children until age 13 to provide the skills needed in the expanding and more demanding world of the early to mid-1800s.

for proof of education to get and hold a job. The new colleges filled that need. There were classes in reasoning and ethics. Many students held down part-time jobs to pay for room and board. Parents often handed down their own old college books to their children. While the sciences required newer books, the other classes did not change much. Philosophy, reasoning, ethics, Latin, Greek and math pretty much stayed the same.

The need for further education continues. Technology requires continued learning long past young adulthood. Today, many 30- and 40-yearolds are going back to college - often online - to keep up with our changing world.

What do children need to know to succeed in adulthood? Much more in the 21st century than ever before.

How to start a seniors’ social club

Various changes are associated with aging, and these can be physical, mental, and emotional. Although each person manages these changes in his or her own way, there’s no denying that social interaction can benefit people from all walks of life as they navigate their golden years.

The Foundation for Senior Care says socializing can give seniors a sense of purpose, stimulate the mind, relieve boredom, potentially prevent feelings of depression, and give individuals something to look forward to. The senior living center Aston Gardens says socialization provides a significant boost to the cognitive health of older adults, helping to prevent or delay conditions that can affect memory. Individuals looking to cultivate healthy social interactions may turn to clubs and other groups. If there’s a dearth of opportunities, individuals can start and promote their own social club.

When considering forming a new group, people must decide on the group’s purpose.

Social clubs can meet and be organized around any number of themes or interests, such as gardening, crocheting, reading, or other shared hobbies. Friends also may be interested in doing food and beverage sampling. In such instances, a luncheon social club makes sense.

After choosing a theme, conduct a search of groups already meeting within a 50-mile radius to see if an existing group already meets your criteria. If not, proceed full speed ahead to establish the new club.

People may turn to social media to spread the word about their group. Although traditional methods of communication may still be available, such as posting information in a community bulletin or on a message board at a local house of worship, the internet can sometimes be a speedier messenger. Facebook groups are one way to organize social clubs, as is the website Meetup.com. The latter is a large online network of offline groups that meet all over the

“Danger” might not be the first word to come to mind when individuals consider their bathrooms. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, more than 1.5 million aging adults visit emergency rooms for fallrelated injuries, many of which occur in the bathroom.

Many falls and spills that occur in the bathroom can be prevented. Seniors or their loved ones can make some minor adjustments to bathrooms so falls are less likely to happen.

People should install grab bars in their shower and bath and elsewhere, as necessary. Grab bars make it easier for aging men and women to get into and out of the shower or the tub by giving them something to hold on to. This assistance can be especially helpful for seniors who must step up and over their tubs to get into

country and the world. The website makes it a snap to organize a local group or find an existing club.

Group leaders should also establish consistent meeting times, as most people prefer a schedule so they can plan their days accordingly. Choose a regular meeting time and place to hold the social club; otherwise, it can be confusing to accommodate everyone. Inconsistency also can make it hard to get the club off the ground.

People forming new clubs are advised to start small and then build. For those new to hosting social clubs, it may be better to begin with only a few members as everyone gets into a groove. As the group becomes more established, it can be opened up to more members, although people may consider capping membership so that the group is more easily managed.

Social clubs are a great way for seniors to stay connected and active. When there isn’t one that meets a person’s interests, he or she may consider starting one.

the shower. Although grab bars are primarily used in showers and tubs, they also can be installed alongside toilets for seniors who could use a little help sitting down and getting up. AARP notes that sheltering arm grab bars provide the best support around toilets. Such grab bars come around both sides of the toilet and look similar to armrests.

Seniors may also want to install LED lighting in their bathrooms. Poor lighting in a bathroom can make it hard

for seniors to see and thereby make them more vulnerable to falls. Lighting can be especially problematic for seniors who make frequent bathroom visits overnight. Even bathrooms with seemingly adequate lighting may be dangerous if they feature dated light fixtures that rely on incandescent bulbs. These bulbs burn out with greater frequency than LED alternatives, which can last for years. The longer bulbs last, the less often

maker’s market event, called “Fifth Friday at the Greenhouse,” for Friday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the GSV aeroponic greenhouse, 448 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The event will feature a number of crafters, food trucks, and entertainment by a strolling minstrel, along with a chance to see the 24 towers at the greenhouse and learn how the undertaking supplies food to GSV and beyond.

“We line the walkways with crafters, leaving plenty of space for people to visit (them),” explained Musselman, who added that canopies willbe placed outside for other crafters. According to Musselman, the variety of crafters present will include those working with stained glass, fabrics, and jewelry. Paintings, customized mugs, Christmas ornaments, and other seasonal crafts will also be offered for sale.

“We had a great turnout last year with more than 100 visitors,” noted Heydt.

Heydt oversees the greenhouse, which produces vegetables that include six varieties of lettuce, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, and edible flowers. “All our produce is harvested three times a week by volunteer residents and used locally,” said Heydt, who added that residents, especially those who gardened in the past, enjoy the greenhouse tremendously. “It’s really nice in the winter when it’s 65 degrees in here,” he added. Everything that’s harvested is used locally, first by GSV kitchens. About 30 pounds of lettuce a month is donated to CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center, and a local restaurant purchases up to 12 pounds weekly. Heydt said that the greenhouse can grow more than 250 plants at a time. “We don’t grow them all

at once, though,” Heydt said. “We grow them in stages.” Heydt stated that the greenhouse allows vegetables to go from seed to plant in six to eight weeks.

Mussleman and Heydt collaborated on organizing the maker’s market after Heydt noted that a sister greenhouse in New Jersey - constructed by the same builder - had posted a craft show event on its Facebook page, and he liked the idea. He suggested it to Musselman, who had been looking for opportunities to organize fifth Friday events at GSV with hopes that the celebrations would spread to New Holland. “We looked at the calendar and saw there was a fifth Friday in September,” recalled Heydt. Readers who would like more information about GSV may visit www.gardenspot village.org.

seniors need to change them, which also reduces their risk for injury. In addition to replacing traditional fixtures with LED alternatives, individuals can plug in LED night lights that make it easy to see when making nighttime visits to the bathroom.

Non-slip bath mats can also be a helpful addition to a bathroom. Non-slip bath mats often utilize rubber-

backed liners to ensure the mats stay put even when floors get wet or damp from condensation after a hot bath or shower. Non-slip mats can be placed where individuals will enter and exit the shower and even by the toilet and sink to help individuals feel steady on their feet.

Seniors should remember to clean their bathrooms regularly. Bathroom surfaces can grow slippery from soap scum and condensation, and

prompt and routine cleaning can reduce the likelihood that seniors will fall in their bathrooms. Seniors who have difficulty keeping up with household cleaning can hire a cleaning service or ask a younger relative to help them.

Seniors can fall anywhere in a home, but they may be more likely to do so in a bathroom. Various measures can help make bathrooms safer for aging individuals.

Nominations sought for award

“You don’t have to be a member for any of our food specials. You do have to be a member to purchase alcohol,” Fisher added.

Currently, the Gap VFW is looking to add new members. “COVID hurt us. We shut down and it’s been a struggle to bounce back,” said Fisher, noting that the post was able to make several building improvements during the shutdown, including the addition of new flooring.

Those interested in joining the post are asked to complete

a membership application. “If they don’t have a sponsor, we will find one for them,” Fisher said. “We definitely need younger veterans (to join).”

Veterans Court seeks volunteer mentors

in community service projects, attend court dates and show up for appointments with their probation officer and other court staff members.

The volunteer mentors must be veterans who are willing to take on a program participant as the participant moves through four phases. Mentoring typically involves attending weekly court sessions; keeping in touch with the mentee by text, phone or personal contact; and serving as a supportive presence.

The Veterans Court is one of three treatment courts that have been established in the

Lancaster County court system to give a second chance to offenders who have struggled with the use of alcohol and other drugs or who are struggling with an untreated mental illness. The Veterans Court is administrated by Judge Jeffery D. Wright, and the mentors’ involvement gives another layer of support to the participants who commit to the program.

Many of the veteran mentors who are involved are retired or have flexible schedules that permit them to attend weekly court dates and other activities. Volunteers

The show features Arielle Green-Hall, a jazz musician from Ohio; Candice Shedd-Thompson, an actress based in Washington, D.C.; Méami Maszewski, a singer, songwriter, and actress from Texas; Karisa Fulmer, a Pennsylvania native who performs across the U.S. and overseas; and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Plakans, the swing covering all four singers, who is a Lancaster native and former Prima youth performer currently studying musical theater in Barcelona. Joshua William Green directs the show, with Paulino Contreras as music director, Ali Murphy as music coordinator, and Kristin Pontz as choreographer.

Tickets are limited, and reservations at www.primatheatre .org/girlgroup are recommended. Private tables and traditional seating in chairs on risers are available. Discounted group tickets are available by visiting www.primatheatre.org/group or calling the box office at 717-3275124. The theater offers free parking and an in-theater bar, and it is handicapped-accessible.
