Looking back at 175 years of faith

Mount Airy Church to hold special service

“Anybody is welcome to come,” said Jim Griel, former pastor of the Mount Airy Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, of the church’s upcoming 175th anniversary celebration. Mount Airy, located at 480 Springville Road, New Holland, will hold a special service to commemorate the event on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m.

The service will include special music. “Two of my grandchildren will play, and three of us will sing,” said Griel, who added that Randy Sizemore, bishop for the International Conference Evangelical Congregational Churches, will speak. Current pastor Philip Walck said that Griel will read the roll call of former pastors and give a brief history of the church from a booklet Griel has prepared. The booklet, along with a special commemorative bookmark, will be distributed to attendees, and a

fellowship meal will be held following the service. Members of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, which was planted by Mount Airy members 145 years ago, will attend the service.

Griel, who served as pastor of the church from 1989 to 1997, said that Mount Airy has its origins with Jacob Albright. “(Albright) was an evangelistic itinerant pastor who broke away from the Methodist Church over German language,” said Griel, who explained that the Methodist Church in the 1790s insisted that Albright preach in English, but Albright wanted to reach German-speaking people.

Eventually, Albright began riding into the Welsh Mountains to a small community known as Mouth Airy. Walck noted that in Albright’s time it was common for preachers to ride a circuit preaching in small towns. “Someone would get saved, and they would start a house church (in that

area),” he explained. “A lot of the small churches (were built) and never grew more than what you see right here with Mount Airy.”

“In 1848, three men purchased this tract of land for a church for $10 from Nicholas and Catherine Harting,” said Griel, adding that during 1848 and 1849, William Lafferty, who was a professional stone mason and member of the congregation, built the church for a remuneration of $1 a day.

Griel recalled older church members telling him about the attendance at the church nearly 100 years ago. “In the 1930s and ’40s, this church was so full that people would sit on the windowsills during Sunday morning services,” he said, adding that currently, the church can hold about 110 people.

Readers who would like to learn more about the church may search Facebook for “Mount Airy E.C. Church.” Individuals with specific questions may call 717-466-6290.

Bingo! Students win back-to-school supplies

On Aug. 10, The Factory Ministries held its second Back-to-School Bingo. About 100 people attended, and children from Pequea Valley School District and adjacent districts took home school supplies and backpacks as prizes.

“Normally, (The Factory’s bingo events are) only for adults,” explained Bethany Miller, adult advocate with The Factory Ministries, who organized the event, “but we open this to parents and children.”

Lions Club to host business mixer

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club will present a business mixer on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Integrous Fences and Decks, 32 Route 41, Gap. The event is free and will be held outdoors on the Integrous deck.

The mixer is being described by organizers as a networking and community-building event. “I will talk a little bit about the club, but (the goal) is for people to get to know their business neighbors in the Gap area,” said club president Steve

Come

Wenrich, noting that complimentary food will be available. “We are doing a cookout with burgers and hog dogs, some side salads, chips and drinks.”

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a well-known local landmark.

Wenrich noted that membership is not limited to people who own businesses. “We are happy to have anybody join,” he said, adding that See Lions Club pg 2

the club is both a service and social organization. “The goal is community service, but there is certainly fellowship involved.”

The club’s largest fundraiser has been its annual Christmas bazaar held at the Gap Fire Hall. “Thanks to community support, we have been able to donate money to the Gap Fire Company, Factory Ministries, Christiana Community Ambulance and the Pequea Valley Education Foundation,” said Wenrich. “The

last couple of years we have been very successful with the bazaar.”

This year’s bazaar will also take place at the Gap Fire Hall and is set for Saturday, Dec. 2. Vendors interested in taking part in the bazaar may email steverw23@gmail.com for an application or send a message to the club on its Facebook page.

Bingo frompg 1

“It was exciting,” added Miller, who noted that the event was the brainchild of former adult advocate Jessie Brown. “Jessie had a desire to find another way to connect families to The Factory,” she said. At The Factory, bingo events function as an opportunity to make connections. Miller explained, “It’s an opportunity to build relational resources.”

Back-to-school supplies that were given out included homework caddies with snacks and fidget toys, in addition to school necessities, craft sets, and prizes such as a new football and soccer balls, water

bottles, clothes, and small electronic items like headphones.

“All the kids in attendance were able to choose from school supply items such as backpacks, binders, notebooks, folders, pencils, glue, crayons, and (other) fun items,” said Miller. “Everybody went home with something.”

“Kids love fun little prizes, and there were plenty of those donated to win through bingo,” said Miller, who added that all prizes were donated. “We didn’t purchase any,” she said. “In the three days leading up to (the event), we had more than $500 in prizes donated, which was great.” Miller said that three-

quarters of the donated prizes were given away at the event.

Local businesses and organizations were involved in the bingo, as well, including Bank of Bird-in-Hand, which donated funds and sent six volunteers to help call bingo and serve snacks. “They engaged with participants and families,” said Miller. “It was great to have them there.”

Representatives from Strengthening Families for ages 10 to 14 were also present to talk about events coming in the fall and the next cohort that will be held at The Factory.

Miller said that some of the parents who came to the

bingo have begun to take part in The Factory’s monthly bingo, which is held on the fourth Thursday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m.

Introducing The Factory Ministries to local families is one goal of the event. “It’s a way to have a fun time for kids, but a way to engage parents to keep them coming back,” said Miller. “Coming through the door, they can see how much we have to offer.”

Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory may visit www.thefactory ministries.com or search for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook.

According to Jennifer Rummel, the horse show held by Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), an organization that provides equine-assisted therapeutic activities to individuals with special needs, is mainly about inclusivity. “It’s a community event, and we encourage people to come (join us),” said Rummel. “Parents of children with special needs will tell you their children are excluded from a lot of things, but this is their event, and it’s wonderful when the community comes out and cheers them on.”

The GMTRC horse show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at GMTRC, 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster. Titled,

“Eventing Extravaganza - an Equestrian Triathlon,” the show will include students

demonstrating their achievements, a skilled horsemanship demonstration around noon, and food available by donation. There is no admission fee to attend, and on-street parking is available in the adjacent neighborhood. Plenty of parking is available for buggies as well.

The event, which has been held for more than a decade, offers about 35 participants an opportunity to showcase their skills and receive a ribbon. “There’s a proficiency element,” explained Rummel. “Classes are based on ability.” Rummel noted that students with limited core strength need help sitting on the horse and guiding the horse, but others are able to trot independently, so categories are arranged accordingly. In addition to performing for an audience, students spend time with other students at the event. “Most (lessons) are individual because (each student’s) needs are so unique,” Rummel

explained. “So, (the show is) an opportunity for students to spend time with each other.” The skilled performance will include a rider demonstrating dressage and jumping.

The event will include a fundraiser tied to fall-themed planters located around the arena and the entrance. Rummel explained that a GMTRC board member obtains the planters. “She decorates, and it looks beautiful,” said Rummel. “Each one has a tag in it, and people can take the tag and buy the planter and then take it home,” said Rummel, who noted that in 2022, the planter fundraiser brought in more than $1,500. Food that will be available by donation includes hot dogs, pizza, baked goods, and beverages.

GMTRC stables 10 therapeutic horses with two more in training and offers classes to both children and adults with special needs or in other at-risk

Heroes and Horses is a nocost, unmounted equineassisted intervention for frontline workers and first responders who have experienced mental health issues following COVID-19.

Rummel noted that the program is constantly looking

for more instructors. “The demand is high, but our ability to meet that demand is (not as high) due to a lack of instructors,” she noted. More than 90% of participants receive some kind of financial assistance with lessons, and Rummel hopes the fundraiser will raise at least $25,000 to help alleviate costs.

Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium. They will circle the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. During the climb, each participant will carry an image or the badge of a first responder who was killed while responding to

the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event. Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey. “We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year. It’s a common bond for people,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up. Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the

5K will benefit Clinic for Special Children

The Clinic for Special Children, 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, will host its annual 5K run and walk on Saturday, Sept. 16. Registration will be available from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m., and the 5K will begin at 9 a.m. The rain-or-shine event will include a kids’ color fun run, a bake sale, a chrysanthemum sale and an awards ceremony after the race.

The route of the 5K will begin and end at the clinic’s facility in Strasburg, and it will take runners on rural roads between local farms, vineyards and scenic Amish properties. Participants may run or walk the 5K, and the clinic invites runners of all physical abilities to participate. In the past, many participants have finished the race in wheelchairs or while pushing strollers. The kids’ color fun run will be held after the conclusion of the 5K.

The proceeds from the event will support the clinic’s variety of services, which it provides to families of children with unique medical issues throughout the area. The clinic offers its patients primary care and specialized laboratory services such as genetic testing.

The clinic began holding the annual 5K in 2018 as a way to raise funds and awareness for its services, and the event draws more than 300 runners every year. “One unique thing about the 5K is that it brings

together all of the different communities we serve,” said Kelly Cullen, marketing and communications manager for the clinic. “We have Amish families and English families who come together to support us.”

In addition to supporting the clinic’s everyday operations, the proceeds from the 5K will assist the nonprofit with its latest expansion project. Last November, the organization began the construction of a new facility in Gordonville. The new facility, which is located on a 10-acre plot of land located just off of Route 340, will be three times the size of the clinic’s current building. The expansion was necessitated by the nonprofit’s growing number of patients, and it plans to rent the Strasburg facility to a local nonprofit organization after the move.

The clinic hopes to finish the construction of the new facility this coming spring and officially move its operations

there by April 2024. When the organization first began to consider potential locations to relocate to, it created a map showing the locations of its patients’ residences to determine where it would be most accessible. Forty-four percent

of the clinic’s current clients reside in Lancaster County, but it provides lab services throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

There is a fee, with a discount available through Friday, Sept. 15. Registration is required by visiting http:// tinyurl.com/MasterGardeners Pawpaw.

For information on accommodations for those with disabilities, contact Christa Shoreman at 717394-6851 in advance of the program.

Lancaster, LEADS seeking Christmas tree

The city of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season.

Property owners who have an appropriately shaped, 25foot or taller evergreen that they are planning to remove are invited to contact city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer@cityoflancaster pa.gov. They should provide their name, address, and phone number, along with the location of the tree and a photo. A jury of city staff members and LEADS board

members will select the tree.

The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for his or her contribution in a press release and during the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays are over, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.

The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting on Friday, Nov. 24. For more information about the event, visit http://visitlancaster city.com/city-events/lancaster -city-for-the-holidays.

Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.

Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster 13 years ago as a way to honor

fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. Members of the community, especially first responders, immediately rallied in support of the memorial.

“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone promised in the days after 9/11,” Yuill said. “Even the younger generations participate, despite being babies when it happened. They know that it’s about honor and sacrifice, and they honor that.”
