Alternative Pathways program helps students get ahead
BY ANN MEAD ASHJaredErb, First Choice career coordinator with the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), likes to share the story of 2023 Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) graduate Ryan Flaim, who was interested in learning auto body restoration. Erb contacted Lichty Brothers Inc., and the business granted Flaim an apprenticeship. “Then they hired him full time during his senior year,” recounted Erb. “He was able to finish his high school credits while taking on a full-time role. It was a win-win.” Erb noted that Flaim is still considering furthering his education at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
Flaim was one of more than 10 PVHS students in the school’s Class of 2023 to participate in such a program, which PVSD calls Alternative Pathways. “Basically, during junior and senior years, students choose a career direction,
and we match them with a company or business or service provider that would be able to help them engage in learning that role,” explained Erb.
“So kids are graduating and moving (directly) into full-time positions, but then (also) continuing their
Six years of celebrating recovery
BY ANN MEAD ASHThe ELANCO-area Celebrate Recovery (CR) - a 12-step, Christcentered discipleship recovery program for individuals age 18 and up that has met from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland - has not changed much over the six years it has been active. According to leaders Carol Musser and Karl Stoltzfus, that is the way it should be.
“What we do here is consistent,” said Musser.
Stoltzfus agreed, saying, “They
strive for that. There’s a familiarity to what we do. Each CR has its own personality, but the materials are consistent.”
Offering a safe place for individuals dealing with addictions has been a goal of the program since it started.
The group is still supported by Petra Church, Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, and Bethany Grace Fellowship. Each week, a hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, and small group meetings, which are divided by gender. The group

education with the support of the company that they are currently working for.”
A few of the other Class of 2023 students who worked outside the classroom as part of a school/organization partnership
included Amani Agosto, who pursued her first choice in special education through an internship at Lighthouse Vocational services; Zachary Otstot, who engaged in an IT internship with the PVSD tech department; and Sarah Arment, who pursued her
interest in physical therapy through an internship at CPRS Physical Therapy.
Erb explained that the program offers a multitude of benefits to the students, including financial relief. “These young adults are earning degrees and earning their place in the professional workforce having not gone into huge debt for training,” he noted, adding that Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health offers a program that can allow a student to attend Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences tuition free. “Programs like that level the playing field for those who would not have the ability to pay,” he said. Erb also pointed out that the students who take part in Alternative Pathways have a broader exposure to their field of interest, which “increases their ability to learn and the likelihood of them completing the program.”
The emphasis on Alternative Pathways means more PVHS students are graduating ready to move into full-time work in a field. “We had See PVSD pg 10

CMBC welcomes new youth pastor
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Josiah Reimold of Peach Bottom was playing football at Solanco High School and being coached by a staff that included Chris Lenhart, pastor of Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) in Paradise, Reimold probably had no idea that he would one day work alongside Lenhart as part of the church’s ministry team. However, it was in high school that Reimold first felt the call to go into youth ministry.
“I felt the call halfway through
high school,” recalled Reimold, who grew up in Peach Bottom. “I went to Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren at the time with my family, and the youth pastor there got me into youth ministry.” After graduating from Solanco in 2019, Reimold headed to South Africa with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) for six months. The first three months he took part in Discipleship Training School, and the next three he worked with a team that evangelized both in rural villages and in the streets of Johannesburg. “We worked a lot with schools and children, and it

Miniature golf fundraiser will benefit Junior Achievement
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDJunior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA) will host its 32nd annual Putt for Education fundraising event on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. The day will include multiple tee times, and noon and 2:30 p.m. spots are currently available to purchase for a set price. Friday, Oct. 13, has been selected as the rain date. The proceeds of the event will support various programs that JA holds throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.
Each tee time will include space for 24 teams to progress through 24 holes, and multiple holes will offer players a chance to earn prizes. One of the prize holes will challenge golfers to hit a ball into the sunroof of a car for a chance to win prizes such as gift certificates for the Village Greens and local businesses. JASCPA will accept registration for sponsors until the day of the event, and teams may sign up to play until the last week of September. Registration will include a graband-go lunch for all golfers and a gift bag of items that have been donated by local businesses.
The funds raised by Putt for Education will benefit multiple programs JA offers to students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Each program is held at schools free of charge and falls into one of the organization’s three target areas: financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JASCPA’s volunteers facilitate the programs and use their own life experiences to teach practical skills in classrooms throughout the area.
One of JASCPA’s financial literacy initiatives is REAL Life, which is a program offered to juniors and seniors in high school. Through REAL Life, students learn about budgeting
Garden Spot and Frederick Living announce affiliation
The board of directors for Garden Spot Communities and Frederick Living recently announced the affiliation of the two organizations. Garden Spot Communities and Frederick Living share a similar mission and values
as faith-based, nonprofit continuing care retirement communities.
The CEOs of the two organizations, Steve Lindsey of Garden Spot Communities and Michelle Rassler of Frederick Living, jointly delivered the news.
The affiliation process is well underway, with Garden Spot Communities and Frederick Living having initiated the legal proceedings required for government approval. The legal affiliation is expected to be finalized early next year.
Upon completion of the affiliation, Frederick Living will become a Garden Spot Community, expanding the collective footprint to include Garden Spot Village and Maple Farm in Lancaster County and Frederick Living in Montgomery County.
by participating in various activities such as guessing the cost of items commonly purchased by adults. Students are also given scenarios that include a specific career and salary, and they are tasked with covering expenses like rent and utilities without exceeding their budgets. “It’s really valuable for students to learn the cost of things as they prepare for adulthood,” said Kim Zech, JASCPA’s vice president of communications and events. “Our programs give kids an opportunity to ask questions and get real-world answers.”
To promote entrepreneurship and employment readiness in students, JASCPA
hosts BizTown. The event involves a daylong interactive learning experience in a simulated town, where fifthand sixth-grade students can operate a business such as a restaurant or bank. The goal of BizTown is to bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and what they will be tasked with in adult life.
During the 2022-23 school year, JASCPA offered programs to over 100,000 students in southcentral Pennsylvania, including over 24,000 kids in Lancaster County.

The upcoming event will be led by the group 3:16, an acoustic Christian band that features both modern and tra-

added fuel to the fire I had for youth ministry to work with those kids,” said Reimold, who returned to the United States in March of 2020 on the same day COVID-19 restrictions went into place. In the fall of 2020, he started studying at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), commuting to some in-person classes and taking others virtually. He will finish his degree in youth and young adult ministry with a minor in Bible in December.
A chance meeting between Lenhart and Reimold’s parents helped to bring about his internship at CMBC, which began in May. Reimold has worked primarily with Jim Davis, pastor of administration and ministries. “(Davis)
has helped me meet internship requirements and get adjusted to the community,” said Reimold, who noted that the church youth pastor position was open when he began his internship, and Reimold became part-time director of next generations in late June.
In his new position, which will become full-time after Reimold graduates, he works with youths in grades seven through 12. Presently, the youths meet on Wednesdays from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. Activities include game time, lessons, snack, and fellowship. Among the monthly events are laser tag, a barn party, and a fundraising event to help fund the yearly mission trip in July.
Reimold is happy to be fulfilling his call. “I just want to show (students) the goodness
and glory of God,” he shared. “One of the reasons I got into youth ministry is because I know these years (of youth) are very important (in shaping) the years that lie ahead,” Reimold noted, adding, “I want to be able to help show them how great God is and how He is always present.”
Working with his former football coach is a plus, too. Reimold said he is looking forward to Lenhart performing the wedding service when Reimhold marries his fiancée in May of 2024.
Readers who want to learn more about CMBC, located at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, may visit https://calvarymon ument.org. Specific questions about the youth program may be emailed to jreimold@ calvarymonument.org.

He added that the Pennsylvania Future Ready Index has set a goal for every senior to have an approved work-based learning experience or an industry-recognized credential to help them further their career potential, but he added that the school cannot meet that goal alone. “It’s a community work,” Erb said. “It takes partnerships between school and business across all industry clustersfrom engineering to health care to education.”

School safety tips offered
As a new school year begins, parents and schools are concerned with ensuring children’s safety and wellbeing. Whether a child is heading to kindergarten or high school, parents may consider the following tips, provided by the Center for Safe Schools.
Parents should maintain open lines of communication with their child. Encourage the child to share concerns
about safety, interactions with peers, or unusual incidents. Awareness of the child’s feelings may help parents address issues promptly and offer guidance. If a child walks or bikes to school, parents should help him or her plan a safe route that minimizes exposure to busy roads and dangerous intersections. Parents and children may practice the route together until children

are comfortable navigating it independently. Children should be reminded to wait in well-lit areas, cross streets at designated crosswalks, and avoid distractions like headphones while walking near traffic.
Parents are encouraged to review personal safety guidelines with their children,
regardless of the children’s age. Parents may want to avoid using the term “stranger danger,” as statistically, most child abductions are committed by someone known to the victim. Children should be given a list of trusted adults they can contact in an emergency.
Children with access to the internet should be educated about online safety. They
should know how to protect their personal information, avoid sharing sensitive data, and recognize potential online threats. Guardians may consider installing parental control software if necessary.
Parents should ensure children know their full name, the parents’ contact information, and emergency contact details. Children should mem-
orize these details in case they need help and cannot access their phone.
Parents may want to discuss bullying with children and emphasize the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. If a child is bullied or witnesses someone else being bullied, the incident should be reported to a trusted adult.

Maize & Snitz Fest planned
The community is invited to explore Lancaster County’s early indigenous and European cultures at the Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Visitors will be able to tour the home built in 1719 for the Herr Family and learn about local indigenous life at the Lancaster Longhouse. Also featured will be historical demonstrations, shopping from local vendors and food.
Interpreters and craftspeople will lead demonstrations throughout the day near the Herr House and the Lancaster Longhouse, offering insight into historic cultures, industries and art forms. Attendees will be able to visit the blacksmith shop, learn about gardening and medicinal plants, see a bake oven demonstration, learn about the craft of corn husk cordage and experience an interpretation of indigenous 18th-century life.
At the Herr House kitchen garden, visitors will be able to learn what the Herr family may have grown on their homestead and what the museum grew this year. A full demonstration schedule is available at www.mennonitelife.org/ events.
