Several years ago, three couples founded the Soup, Sandwich, and Talk events that were held in Gap. Each program included a variety of free soups and sandwiches with a short sermon. The programs were the predecessor to the creation of WordUp Community Ministries, a local church.
“Soup, (Sandwich), and Talk started five years ago,” said Buck Mowday, who founded the events along with his wife, Verna; Rodney and Stephanie Smoker; and Lloyd and Gail Murphy. Buck recalled that the evening program stopped when WordUp Community Ministries, moved into a new facility at Dutchland Inc., 160 Route 41, Gap. “We are getting back to our roots (now),” said Buck. “We want to include the community. This is open to the public, and it doesn’t cost a dime.”
With that goal in mind, a special anniversary Soup, Sandwich, and Talk will be held at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.
“We will have free soup and sandwiches and water,” said Buck, who noted the soups would be served cafeteria-style from slow cookers.
Mark 10:45, helps set the tone of the ministry. “Jesus said, ‘I didn’t come here to be served, but I came to serve,’” said Buck. “We just want to serve the community in Gap and the surrounding area.” Buck added that he hopes the service that church members perform has a ripple effect. “One way that we can serve God is by me serving you, so you can serve others, so others can serve others,” he said.
WordUp holds Sunday services at the Dutchland facility, with a café opening at 10 a.m. and services beginning at 10:45 a.m.
Buck said that all six founders will be there to discuss how Soup, Sandwich, and Talk started and where WordUp is now. “It (will be) very casual and relaxed,” said Buck. “We believe the best way to communicate to people about Christ is through relationships.”
As leader of WordUp, Buck noted that his lifetime Scripture, which is

“It’s really just a fun night for our supporters to gather and celebrate the program in a way that lifts up our girls and makes it possible for more to participate,” said Sarah Yohe, director of community engagement with Girls on The Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon, of the Kickin’ Up Kindness event that raises funds for GOTR scholarships.

“The families who have done it love it,” said Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries. “Some have done it twice because they love it so much.”
Meredith Burnett, school social worker with the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), agreed. “It really helps with communication going into the teen years,” she said.
“We just want to serve the community in Gap and the surrounding area.”

Bill Terry, who founded the Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club, which meets on the third Saturday of each month, worked with Marc Spiridigliozzi and others to bring Todd DePastino, executive director of the Veterans Breakfast Club, from Pittsburgh to Woodcrest Villa for a special breakfast event on Sept. 17.
More than 70 area veterans gathered to hear from DePastino, see Blankets of Honor bestowed, and hear and tell their stories among others who understand.

briefly interviewed a Marine named Ed Moreau while waiting for breakfast to be served. Moreau relayed what it was like to be the lone Marine in a family of Navy veterans. “My Dad said, ‘I can forgive you because the Marine Corps is a department of the Navy,’” Moreau recalled. “I said, ‘That’s right, Dad; it’s the men’s department.’”
DePastino also spoke to Sara Hodgkiss, who transformed her family’s farm into an official nonprofit equine-assisted therapy organization for veterans and people with disabilities called Woerth It Hollow. Hodgkiss told DePastino about her six years of service as a human resources information management specialist for 3,500 to 4,500 soldiers at a time.
Terry was interviewed about his unusual service as a Navy diving medical technician, who dove wearing suits of 180 to 300 pounds. Terry explained how he was trained to place IVs and perform minor surgery.
The first Blanket of Honor recipient at the breakfast was Spiridigliozzi. DePastino asked Spiridigliozzi about his time in the Army in Vietnam. “I was a light weapons infantry man,” said Spiridigliozzi, who took part in about 26 combat assaults with a Huey helicopter, which he called the “Calvary’s horse in Vietnam.”
Manny Acuna with Blankets of Honor presented Spiridigliozzi with a blanket, wrapping it around the veteran’s shoulders and saying, “We are here for you.” Joined by Terry and DePastino, the group offered prayer, with Acuna noting, “For your service, you shall not be forgotten. We thank you for your sacrifices.”
Blankets of Honor are given to Gold Star family members and other supporters of veterans. Acuna brought a supporter blanket to present to DePastino. “It represents the people who guard the freedom while we are away,” he explained. “We thank you for being here, Todd,” he added.
DePastino, who is not a veteran, explained his calling to be a supporter, saying, “I love being a part of the veteran community. This community is special. The camaraderie is intense, and I am an honorary part of the group.”

Golfers Win Second Straight Section Title
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Coming off a regular season which included a LancasterLebanon League Section Four title, the Pequea Valley golf team headed into the league championships at Fairview Golf Course in Lebanon on Monday, September 26.
There was a handful of sophomores contributing to the team’s success including Cole Stoltzfus.
“He led the team with a 79.7 scoring average over the six regularseason matches,” Pequea coach Clair Beiler pointed out. “Senior Matt Lapp had a tidy 81.3 average while sophomores Dylan Stoltzfus, Trenton Stoltzfus along with Bo Smucker and Isaiah Slabaugh all contributed.
“Our record was 28-2 and we edged Annville-Cleona for our second straight Section Four title,” Beiler added. The Dutchmen fin-
ished with a second-best record of 22-8 in the regular season.
In the league championships, competing in the Class-AA level, Lapp qualified for District Three AA championships. He shot a 13-overpar 84 and made the cut for districts.
Cole Stoltzfus barely missed the cut with his score of 87. Smucker shot a 95 on the day with Trenton Stoltzfus (99) and Josh Stoltzfus (101) rounding out PV’s top five.
Winston Thai of Lancaster Country Day won the individual championship with a score of 75.
The Braves fell short of the team competition, Beiler explained.
“We fell short with AnnvilleCleona posting a team score of 335 to our team score of 352,” he said.
“The Pequea Valley golf program has a bright future. We say goodbye to Matt Lapp but have five sophomores and five freshmen returning next year.”
FOOTBALL
Orlando Stoltzfus and Cameron Bergman both rushed for 47 yards with Stoltzfus scoring a second-quarter touchdown in Pequea Valley’s Friday night L-L League gridiron clash with Schuylkill Valley in Kinzers.
The one man the Pequea defense could not contain, however, was Dom Giuffre, who scored four rushing touchdowns for the Pan-
thers while compiling 136 rushing yards on 14 carries. The Panthers improved to 3-2 overall with a 55-7 victory while the Braves fell to 0-5.
Asked about Giuffre’s ability to get out into the open, Pequea Valley head coach Mike Choi explained, “It was more power and strength than speed.
“They pulled with a couple of linemen and got out in front of us,” he said. “They would pull the guard and tackle and take out our defensive ends. They did a good job of that.”
Though Giuffre busted out for a 45-yard touchdown run followed by a 40-yarder and helped extend the lead with a 13-yard rushing TD, the Braves managed to cut the deficit to 21-7.
“I looked up at the scoreboard and it was 21-0 in the first quarter,” Choi said. “I was looking for our guys to respond and they did.”
The Braves had their second impressive drive of the half, this one culminating in a five-yard rushing TD by Stoltzfus. In the first quarter, they drove to the Panthers’ red zone only to cough up the football.
“We got to their 15-yard line and fumbled,” said Choi. “We drove up with a few nice runs. I thought we had the momentum. If we go in and score there, it’s 7-7 and maybe things settle down.
“It doesn’t matter who your opponent is,” added the coach, “you can’t turn the ball over five times.”
The Panthers would go on to score on two touchdown passes as well.
“In losses, you learn a lot about yourself,” Choi said. “You have a game like this once or twice a yeargames where you struggle.”
Choi also pointed out the imbalance in team rosters.
“Their team had 58 guys,” he pointed out. “In their pregame warmups I saw they had 24 linemen; we dressed a total of 23 players. Three of our four starting linebackers were out.”
GIRLS’ SOCCER
In a match against Section Four foe Northern Lebanon, the PV girls’ soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout on Monday, September 26 at Pequea.
“It was a well-played game for us from start to finish,” Braves head coach Steve Morris said.
Morgan Graham and Elena Esh scored first-half goals. Interestingly enough, Esh provided the assist for Graham’s goal and vice versa. Ellie Rishel added one six minutes into the second half.
The Braves were coming off a win by forfeit against Lancaster Country Day.
“They have canceled their season for the rest of the year,” Morris explained.
Wednesday night the Braves, 32-1 in league play, suffered a 2-0 loss to Lancaster Mennonite.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team posted a 21 victory over Lancaster Country Day on Thursday, September 22 as Pequea improved to 3-5-0 (2-3-0 league).
Bryce Goodroad made seven saves while Wade Stoltzfus and Corey Baldwin gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the first half. Peyton Leitch provided the assist on the Stoltzfus goal.
The Cougars trimmed the lead in half in the 38th minute on a Frederick Bloom goal.
Pequea’s next two contests ended in heartbreaking fashion. In a non-league Saturday game at Kinzers, Kennard-Dale managed to sneak in a goal right in the closing seconds of the first half. The 1-0 lead held up for the final 40 minutes with K-D goalie Logan Sumner making four saves.
On the Braves’ side of the pitch, Goodroad was solid with nine saves.
The Braves visited Northern Lebanon on Monday, September 26
where another tough loss would come in overtime. Carter Cheslock scored the golden goal eight minutes into extra time to give the Vikings a 3-2 win.
It was a see-saw battle between the two teams as the Vikings took a first-half lead only to see Leitch score the equalizer seven minutes into the second half.
Garrett Bohn scored off a Cheslock assist six minutes later only to have Baldwin even it up near the midway mark of the second half, scoring off a Stoltzfus assist.

How To Maintain An Older Vehicle
New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.
Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.
- Take care of the timing belt.
Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles.
Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.
- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major
brake work is required.
- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.
- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tuneups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.
The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

Families
Strengthening Families is a seven-week, evidence-based program developed 30 years ago by Iowa State University for families with children ages 10 to 14. In PVSD, the program, which is fully funded by a Penn Medicine Lancaster grant, is held at the Together Community Center, where it represents a partnership between Lancaster General Health, The Factory Ministries, and COBYS.
“It’s considered highly preventive for drug and alcohol abuse among participants, and research has shown there’s even a ripple out effect from children who go through the program to their friends,” reported Burnett. Facilitators, who undergo training sessions to take part, include Factory staff, community members, teachers, and Penn Medicine staff members.
The program, which has been in place in the district for about five years, aims to help parents and
caregivers learn nurturing skills they may use to support their children, and to teach them how to effectively discipline and guide their children. It also aims to give youths a healthy future orientation and an increased appreciation of their parents and caregivers and to teach them skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure.
Throughout the course, the members of each participating family work on learning how to communicate and listen using “I feel” statements, how to say no to peer pressure, and how to just have fun together. “It’s about making decisions to help them reach goals,” said Neff, who added that part of the focus is on what students want to be when they grow up and then working backward to determine the steps that need to be taken to reach that goal. Each program begins with a meal. Then children and parents are separated for an hour of
programming before joining together again for the conclusion.
“It talks through how to host family meetings,” said Neff. “I think the power in it is that it’s very practical.” Neff added that there is material for both parents and students to take home and practice and then to discuss at the next session.
Burnett noted that flyers are sent home to families in the district that have children in the designated age group. The program is also advertised by email, newsletter, and referral. ELANCO School District families are welcome to attend as well. “We have had a diverse group of families participate and enjoy it,” said Burnett. The most recent cohort began meeting on Oct. 4, and the program will be repeated during the spring semester.
Readers who would like to learn more about the program may visit www.lancasterjoiningforces.org /prevention.

All current and past military officers are invited. Reservations are required by Thursday, Oct. 13. For details and reservations, contact Jim Cunningham at 717-568-2949 or jetpilot37@comcast.net. Visit www.moaalancasterchapt.org for additional information.
GOTR
This year’s event will be held at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It will be presented by PNC Bank.
The dress code for the event is casual, and Yohe recommended wearing jeans with a splash of pink. Dinner will consist of a buffet featuring a selection of foods from Rocky’s BBQ. A campfire will be located on-site for attendees to enjoy. A live band will play bluegrass music for attendees’ listening and dancing pleasure, and a silent auction will be held. According to Yohe, the silent auction will feature gift certificates from local stores and restaurants, along with experiences, such as trips. “LOA Orthodontics has
donated a full orthodontic treatment,” said Yohe, who added that Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL) has donated their skybox at the Barnstormers’ stadium with a concession gift card.
Christina Santoleri, who has long coached GOTR teams in Lancaster city schools, will speak, and a live appeal with a goal of raising $30,000 for scholarships will be given. More than 50% of girls receive financial assistance to take part in GOTR programs, and the Kickin’ Up Kindness event is a major fundraiser to help meet scholarship needs.
GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One study found that
85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills.
Kickin’ Up Kindness events were canceled in both 2020 and 2021, so
organizers are excited to be live again this year, but tickets are limited, and they must be purchased by Wednesday, Oct. 12. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.gotr lancaster.org/kicknupkindness.
The Girls on the Run (GOTR) Kickin’ Up Kindness fundraiser to provide scholarships for girls who want to participate in GOTR will include food, live music, and a silent auction.

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads
newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.
In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks,
York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.
With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.
If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact

Jordan Scott Gilbert, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities,” thinks that staging the musical in the small theater will only enhance the telling. “It’s a
big show that we are trying to make intimate in this small space, which is great for storytelling,” said Gilbert, who was the assistant producer of the show on Broadway. Gilbert chose “A Tale of Two Cities” along with Cavod artistic director Monica DePaul
and Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts.
“A Tale of Two Cities” will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a special opening night themed dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Cocktail attire is requested for this red carpet event. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 16 and 23.
“A Tale of Two Cities” with book, music, and lyrics by Jill Santoriello is based on Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel that tells the tale of a love triangle. The story focuses on the beautiful Lucie Manette, played by Jackie Zliczewski; French aristocrat Charles Darnay, played by Alexander Weaver; and English cynic Sydney Carton, played by Bryant Martin. Walter Winston O’Neill, who took part in the Broadway production, will play Dr. Manette. Alicia Burton will play Miss Pross, and Hannah Rau will portray Madame Defarge. Set during the French Revolution, the story encompasses love and redemption in a way that parallels Cavod’s mission. The show is choreographed by Stephanie Brooks Martin, with musical direction by Amy Rau. Glen Brodersen of Sight & Sound Theatre is handling the set.
Calling the show “vocally challenging,” Gilbert relayed that the cast is doing a “really awesome job.” “There are some cast members who are perfect for their roles,” he noted of the cast of nearly 30. “My point of view with the storyline is God working in people, specifically the lead character (of Sydney Carton) to bring him to a place of faith,” continued Gilbert. “I think it will be very moving and show the audience
the depths people will go to save those that they love.”
Dienner said that the show is a bit different for Cavod because there are dark moments. “It can be hard to find shows with redemptive meaning,” she said, adding, “To show the redemption, you have to show the evil.” Dienner said the show is for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. She compared the show to another classic by Victor
