Pequea Valley

Littlekids are often in awe of big kids. Put a first-grader next to a high school football player in full uniform, and you are likely to see the little eyes open wide in wonder. In Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), where a goal of having 90% of local children reading by third grade and reading proficiently by fourth grade has been set, combining literacy with “big kid” athletes is a winning combination.
PVSD held its fifth Read Under the Lights event on Sept. 29 at the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) stadium, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. PVSD children from birth through sixth grade were invited to attend with their families. On the football field were opportunities to visit up to 10 stations to play games, take part in a literacy activity, and hear a book read by a student-athlete. In addition, each child received a free book, and families were given three door prize tickets. Door prizes included seasonal themed baskets, featuring a country kitchen basket, a bath basket, a baking basket, a
crafting basket, a family game night basket, a Paradise PTO gift basket, and more. The snack bar was open with food items for purchase.
Doors opened at 5:45 p.m. After registering, young students could choose to visit a number of stations manned by members of PVHS sports teams. Station 10 was surrounded by football players in their Braves shirts, while softball players at station 8 offered to do arm circles with a student as part of a
game. At station 7, members of the girls’ tennis team oversaw a fishing game, and at station 3 miniature basketball hoops and inflatable basketballs covered the ground. At the boys’ soccer team station, a member of the team read “The Grouchy Ladybug” to seven young students.
PVSD assistant superintendent Rich Eby took the microphone to welcome everyone to the event celebrating literacy and community. He noted that the members of the
different sports teams were ready to read to students and encouraged families to enjoy themselves.
Local organizations that had displays and personnel at the event included Community Action Partnership, Boy Scouts of America Pack 28 Paradise, and Joining Forces For Prevention.
According to Karla Beiler, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, who worked on the event with early
learning director Lisa Eckert, organizers hoped to see more than 200 students attend.
PVHS principal John Trovato expressed delight over the event.
“We have a beautiful night for this,” he said. “I love the high school kids helping out the younger kids. That is so cool.”

You walk your dog, walk for exercise, or go for a run, and most of the time you probably do not give much thought to your safety. Being aware of threats that could invade your routine is the first step toward increasing your personal security.
According to Jerry Harper, president of Community Safety & Security Consultants (CCSC) of Lititz, raising your safety level begins with raising your awareness. “The most important thing I tell people is to

Bonnie Lord is one of the most successful artists at the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Artisans Corner, according to Alan Dinning, one of the founders of the Artisans Corner. Filled with items created by GSV residents, the shop is located in the former Fulton Bank offices at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
Lord, who recently turned 90, creates stained-glass items, ranging from cats and owls to snowflakes and even stained-glass windows. Lord shares her knowledge by teaching beginner and followup classes in the art, but her own experience learning to work with glass took a much more winding path.
When Lord, who is originally from Michigan, was in her 30s, she had amassed a collection of driftwood that washed up at her family’s cottage on the lake in her home state. “I saw an ad for this (stained-glass) owl on a piece of driftwood,” recalled Lord, who sent away for a kit that made three of them. She soon discovered she did not have the right tools for the job. “I had a pair of pliers and a soldering gun,” she remembered. “It took four or five years to get from making nuggets to cutting and making things (I could sell),” said Lord, who now teaches students in six weeks what it took her six years to learn on her own. “I don’t understand how I stuck with it. I made so many mistakes.”
When Lord arrived at GSV after living 50 years in Springfield, Delaware County, in late 2009, she had just missed the community’s October fall festival. She worked the whole year to prepare for the next one. This year, the fall festival has been replaced by a Makers Market to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information may be found at www.garden spotcommunities.org/family -christmas-event.
Lord has become known for her glass snowflakes, but those began as a mistake as well. “I got some bevels to make a star, but they didn’t work, and I had 30 of them,” she said. “I made my first snowflake, and it sold very well. So, the next year I came up with another one, and now I have 13 different patterns of snowflakes.”

Registration for the Freedom 5K will open at 7:45 a.m., and the timed 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in various age categories, based on a chip timing system. A modified fun run will follow the 5K, and it will not be timed.
The 5K course consists of four laps around the park. The paved course will follow a trail around trees and ballfields in the park and will include low-grade inclines and declines. “(The course) is all within the parameters of the park where they currently have a walk/run path,” said McNutt. “There will be cheer teams along the course, water stations and signage to guide our walkers/runners.” Participants will be provided with snacks, including fruit and granola bars.
The fun run, open to people of all ages, will be one lap around the park, which equates to three-quarters of a mile. All participants in the fun run age 12 and younger will receive a completion medal. Children are encouraged to dress in costume for the fun run as well as the Fall Festival.
The two organizations that will benefit from the run/walk are A21 and North Star Initiative. A21 aims to reach, rescue and restore individuals caught in the cycle of slavery in the United States and around the world. North Star Initiative operates a restoration home for sex trafficking survivors in Lancaster County. For more details about the organizations, visit www.a21.org and www.northstarinitiative.or g, respectively. Information about both organizations will also be available at the event on Oct. 15.
“With support from sponsors and participants, Freedom Life has been able to give more than $40,000 to the fight against human trafficking since its first Freedom 5K,” McNutt pointed out.
The FL Kids Team at Freedom Life Church will offer the community Fall Festival beginning at 9:30 a.m. “It is free to everyone. We will have bounce houses, face painting, balloon animals, candy apple dipping, a photo booth, games and other activities,” said McNutt, noting that the Trunk or Treat will open at 10:30 a.m.
“It’s a fun day from start to finish, with music, games and fun for all ages,” she added. “We welcome everyone to come out and enjoy this community event.”
In the event of inclement weather, the Freedom 5K and fun run will continue as planned; the Fall Festival will be postponed until the evening of Friday, Oct. 28, and moved to Freedom Life Church, 447 Noble Road, Christiana. To register for the 5K and fun run, visit www.freedom.life/free dom5k. For more information about the event, call the church office at 610-5935959 or visit www.facebook .com/freedomlife.tv.

The Artisans Corner, which opened in November 2021, has been a boon for Lord. “It’s such a blessing to be able to sell (my creations) each month at the store,” she noted. “It has kept me on my toes.” The first Friday of each month, an Artisan of the Month sets up a demonstration in front of the store. In August, Lord was the Artisan of the Month, demonstrating for two hours how she works in stained-glass. “There are always people here for that,” Dinning pointed out. “(Those events) have been very successful.”
Lord loves the shop not only because it gives her an outlet to sell her creations, but because she adores the work of the other GSV artisans. “This is such a great gift shop where you can get beautiful notecards and other gift items,” she said.
Hours for the shop, which is located to the left after entering Village Square, are Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information about GSV is available at www.gardenspotvillage.org

always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? What are (those people) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts.
“If you feel uneasy, cross the
street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”
Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or highway when someone is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”
Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zig-zagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.
Some things that can help keep you safer should be done
before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk. “Definitely change your routes and your times if necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.
Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video for an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.
Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

Cooper explained that his book, about Joseph, earthly father of Jesus, was written in the first person because the Scripture records no words for Joseph. “It’s his voice speaking and the kind of person I think he was,” said Cooper, who was inspired to write about the carpenter 40 years ago by a teenage girl who referred to Joseph as a “wimp.” “That got me started,” recalled Cooper. “I didn’t believe that, but I didn’t have any (proof) to say differently.”
What began as an attempt to write a short story grew into 228 pages published in 2021.
“The more I researched and
read the Scripture and considered what kind of person (Joseph) was, the more alive he became,” said Cooper. “I imagine he was quiet but very strong.” Cooper also noted that he admired Joseph’s treatment of Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant. “He cared for her,” said Cooper, who added, “(Joseph’s) faith shines through it all. He knows who Jesus is, but he knows no one would believe it.”
Burns reported that the mission committee members hope the sale will raise $2,000 for local organizations such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services as well as international ones such as JAARS Inc., a ministry associated with Wycliffe Bible Translators. The Lampeter-Weaverland Connection
BY ANN MEAD ASH
The names Weber and Weaver are actually the sameWeaver being the anglicized version of the German Weber.
When the Weber family came to Philadelphia from Switzerland between 1711 and 1717, it originally settled in Germantown and then in the Lampeter area. Johannes, the father, had four sons. Hans, remained in Lampeter, and his three brothers - Jacob, Henry, and George - moved to East Earl Township, in an area that came to be known as the Weaverland Valley.
The connection between these two areas will be explored in a presentation featuring descendants John Weber, Lamar Weaver, and
Mary Lou Weaver Houser, to be held at a meeting of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS). The presentation will take place in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
The presentation has its roots in a competition of sorts held in November 2021 at the Lancaster County Art Association in Strasburg. Weber explained that 22 artists completed paintings of the Weber 1724 pioneer homestead in Lampeter. Weber, along with Weaver Houser and Jean Kilhefner-Hess of Mennonite Life (formerly the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society), selected a watercolor by Marita Hines to be made into prints, which will be available for sale at the meeting. Some of the renditions by other local artists will be on display as well. Susan Moedinger, who occupies the 1763 house at the homestead in Lampeter, plans to attend.
Also on display will be paintings and photographs of the 1761 Heinie Weber house, which was located on Quarry Road in East Earl. That house was razed in 1981. One of the paintings of the Heinie Weber house was completed by GSV resident Earl Horst, who has been invited to the meeting. “It’s an excellent representation (of the East Earl house),” said Weber, who will also bring remnants of roof tiles from that home. “(The roof) was unique to Lancaster County,” said Weber, who
A painting of the 1761 Heinie Weber house in Weaverland by Earl Horst
noted that the handmade tiles are rumored to have come from Europe.
Weber noted that the commonalities between the two houses will be pointed out. “They were constructed very similarly,” said Weber. “They had the large stone fireplace in the center of the house to help heat the whole house when winter set in.”
It is possible that the Webers (who became Weavers) took a branch of the Pequea Creek to the Conestoga River on their journey to the northeast portion of the county and even to Berks
County. “The Conestoga River plays an important part in the legacy of moving people to other parts of the county,” said Weber. “The intention is to clarify or highlight the relationship between these two settlements,” he noted, adding, “It’s the Lampeter intermediate settlement that allows the others to take place. It was the first stop after Germantown.”

Tax Credits Available To Farmers
A statewide program is offering $13 million in tax credits to help Pennsylvania farmers install conservation practices that can improve long-term viability, keep soil on the land, and reduce pollution flowing into local rivers and streams. Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection
Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of notill planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops, forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.

Berkey’s friend Janice Crills, who provides him with assistance, is organizing the party. “A lot of people recognize him from being on Routes 30 and 41. For years, he has pulled a wagon along the road on Tuesdays,” Crills explained. “He would cash in the cans for money.”
Berkey, an honorary member of the Christiana Lions Club, has been assisted through the years by the club, which provided him with a new wagon to collect the cans. In 2008, Lions Club members, led by Jim Groff, were able to provide Berkey with a new trailer to live in. Through donations and help from volunteers and local churches, they were also able to furnish Berkey’s new home.
Due to health issues, Berkey has not been able to do his weekly route through Chester and Lancaster coun-
ties but is still able to get cans that are dropped off at local collection boxes.
Instead, he has been keeping busy creating art with coloring pencils. “He spends hours and hours with his coloring pencils and artwork. We have turned those pages into unique cards and bookmarks,” said Crills, noting that visitors to the birthday party will be able to purchase the items for a donation.
Although gifts are not requested, those who attend the party may bring greeting cards for Berkey to enjoy and later display in his home.
“(I want people to) come appreciate his artwork and support the local community as we celebrate his birthday. He would truly enjoy seeing the community and sharing his artwork,” said Crills. “I want him to feel appreciated and celebrated.”
Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since. According to the State Conservation Commission, REAP tax credits have been used on over 3,000 farming operations across the commonwealth since 2007.

PV Booters Upset Undefeated Wyomissing
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Wyomissing girls’ soccer team visited Pequea Valley on Friday, September 30, coming into this non-league match unbeaten.
“They were ranked first in District Three Class 2A and were 11-0 coming into Friday’s match,” Pequea head coach Steve Morris noted.
The Braves (7-4-1), on a great goal by Abrielle Fisher, took a 10 lead and held off the Spartans making that the final score.
“We did not get many chances - four shots total, and no corners,” Morris pointed out. “Abrielle made the most of her chance from a long ball in from Ellie Rishel. She touched between two defenders and finished it off with a great shot 12 minutes into the second half.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Carissa Mulder made 12 saves on the day to record a shutout.
“This was a big win for us,” said Morris. “We defended very well across the field and Mulder turned away 12 shots. Our strength and conditioning really paid off.”
Tuesday, October 4, it was another 1-0 Braves victory. This time, the goal came in the opening minute of the match against Annville-Cleona and the Braves held on for the victory. Trinity Rosa scored and the
defense, along with Mulder (5 saves), did the rest. Pequea Valley improved to 4-2-1 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
FOOTBALL
Pequea Valley defeated Columbia 16-0 in a Section Five battle on a drizzly Friday night, September 30. It was Pequea Valley’s first win of the year.
And what led to the teams’ first victory?
“It was the first game all year where we put all phases together,” head coach Mike Choi said, referring to offense, defense, and special teams. “We have been working hard on special teams. Even though we missed one extra point, we had a key field goal. Also, Peyton Leitch had a huge punt for us in the fourth quarter. It was a 44yarder that landed inside their five-yard line.”
Offensively, Dantae Petersheim and Orlando Stoltzfus led the rushing attack.
“Both of those kids provided us with good hard runs,” said Choi. “It kept the clock going and the sticks moving. It was great to watch their one-two punch.”
Petersheim finished with 111 rushing yards on 22 carries while Stoltzfus ran for 70 yards on 12 carries. They also each had one reception from quarterback Peyton Temple, who engineered the offense nicely.
“Peyton did a great job running our offense and managing the game,” Choi said. “Peyton was a steady influence and leader who kept us on schedule. He also had an interception on defense.”
Petersheim’s two-yard rushing touchdown and the extra point by Leitch put Pequea up 7-0 in the second quarter - a lead the Braves held up to halftime.
Leitch added a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter and a big 35-yard rushing TD by Stoltzfus capped the scoring in the fourth.
“Petersheim also had a huge run that closed out the game for us,” Choi added.
Three of the Braves’ first four losses this season were games in which they were mostly within striking distance. They had allowed only an average of 21 points per game going into the Schuylkill Valley game on September 23.
The Braves fell 55-7 in that one, then bounced back to record not only a victory, but a shutout.
“Sometimes when you lose, it can be a good thing,” said Choi. “In that loss to Schuylkill Valley, we looked at the film and saw what we needed to improve upon. We had played pretty good defense up to that point. Our
kids watched that film then went out and worked hard at practice.”
So, defensively, Pequea came up big against the Crimson Tide on Friday night.
“Columbia is a talented team,” Choi added. “They moved the ball on us and got into the red zone. Twice we took the ball away - a fumble and an interception. Another time we just kept backing them up.
“Cameron Bergman was matched up against their best receiver all game and was a
stalwart on defense,” added the coach.
Asked about the effect this victory has on team morale, Choi replied, “You could see our kids growing week to week. The win solidifies how the process has worked. You can believe in the program and believe in your coaches. When you get the win, you see how it all works for you.”
BOYS’ SOCCER
Joel Pieffer took an assist from Jackson Neff and scored for the Pequea boys’ soccer
team on Friday, September 30 at Wyomissing. The goal came three minutes into overtime and earned a 2-1 win to reward the Braves’ great effort in this non-league road game.
The Spartans scored with only three minutes remaining in regulation to spoil a shutout bid by Bryce Goodroad (5 saves).
Levi Pacella had given the Braves a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the second half, scoring off a Tony MartinezOrtiz assist.
