Listening to Intercourse Library board member Michelle Lichty talk about the organization’s upcoming event, it is easy to picture the candlelit and decorated library elegantly appointed with high- and low-top tables awaiting guests in an intimate setting. “When it’s dark, it’s lovely,” said Lichty. “It’s such a nice atmosphere.”

This year’s “An Evening at the Library” will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The Perella Schoolhouse will be open for the event.

Adding to the atmosphere will be Pequea Valley High School music teacher Nathan Bankert, who will tickle the ivories accompanied by a friend for vocal harmonies. “Nathan really adds something to (the event),” said Lichty of the live music.

A variety of food and beverage items will also be served. Local vendors of cheeses, including Misty Creek Goat Dairy, will provide samples, as will dessert makers, including Michael’s Homestyle Breads, which will donate sticky buns, and M&A Sweet Treats, which will donate mini doughnuts. Cupcakes will be served,

and board member Sadie Ebersol will make hot milk cakes. “Pastry Paradise will donate a sample of their treats,” said Lichty. Pepper Lane Fudge and Sweets at Kitchen Kettle Village will donate candy and Miesse candy will be provided as well. Coffee, tea, and punch will be contributed by Ten Thousand Villages, and local wineries, including Waltz Vineyards, will donate wine samples.

In the past, similar events included a silent auction, but Lichty said that a different type of fundraiser will be held this year. “We will have a giving tree for people to sponsor things,” she explained. “We will ask for sponsors for a number of books or a program.”

Lichty is looking forward to seeing members of all segments of the community at the event, including younger and older people and members of the Plain community. “We would like to celebrate our name change back to Intercourse Library,” she noted.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, may be purchased in advance or at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the library or by calling 717-768–3160. More information about the library may be found at www.intercourselib.org.

Building on the success of last year’s event, WordUP Community Ministries will again present a Trunk or Treat event on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Dinner will be available beginning at 5 p.m., and then children will be able to visit decorated cars to gather Halloween candy from 6 to 8 p.m.

Two years ago, Grace Point Church, 10 S. Singer Ave., Paradise, canceled its Fall Fun Fest due to COVID-19 restrictions. In 2021, church members decided to hold the event as a completely outdoor celebration, but the activity was postponed at the last minute due to rain. When the event was held, attendance was nearly 300.

This year, the church is making changes to better accommodate families and volunteers. “We are changing the day and the time,” reported organizer Kathy Gehman.

The 16th Fall Fun Fest will be held at the church on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. In 2018, church members served more than 650 meals and gave away candy to a large number of children. Previous events were held on Friday evening. “It (will) just (be) a fun family afternoon,” said Gehman.

As in 2021, emphasis at the fest will be on outdoor activities. Highlights will include inflatables, a petting zoo, and live music. The fest, a trickor-treat alternative, will also feature carnival games, a coffee bar, a campfire, and s’mores. Milkshakes will be available for purchase. The church welcomes community members of all ages to enjoy the free afternoon of fun. Friendly costumes are welcome, but attendees are asked not to wear scary masks to the event.

The meal, one of the most popular parts of the event,

New Hol land Church of the Nazarene will host a Community Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 22. The outdoor event will run from 3 to 5 p.m. at New Holland Community Park, 400-498 E. Jackson St., New Holland.

The festival will feature games, a Trunk or Treat, inflatables, candy, and more. Food trucks will be on-site for attendees to purchase food.

The event is free and open to the public. The event will take place rain or shine. For details, visit www.facebook.com /nhchurchofthenazarene.

will be held inside, but Gehman pointed out that this year, outside tables will be available for those who prefer to eat in the outdoors. Attendees who wish to receive a free meal are asked to visit the welcome table at the event to receive a ticket. Meals will include a choice of a pork barbecue sandwich or a hot dog, along with applesauce, chips, and a cookie. Additional meals will be available for purchase.

Gehman knows that for local children the draw of the trick-or-treat alternative is the free sweet treats. “There’s candy at each game station,” explained Gehman, who added that bags for candy are provided. “We just hand out the candy and they leave here with a bag full,” she said. There is no admission fee to attend the event, and parking is free. For more information, readers may call 717-687-7971 or visit www.gracepointparadise.com.

Breakout Schedules Second Trunk Or Treat

“We are inviting the community,” said Grace Kieley, office administrator with Breakout Ministries, referring to the church’s second Trunk or Treat event. “It will be out in the parking lot unless it’s raining, and then it will be in the gym.”

Kieley is familiar with having to adjust to inclement weather. The first Trunk or Treat in 2021 was moved inside because of rain. This year’s event is planned for Friday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The activity will feature up to 15 decorated trunks, games, candy and other goodies, and food by donation.

Among the trunk decoration themes organizers hope to see will be those based on “The Lion King” and “Monsters Inc.,” along with various cartoon characters.

“Some of the trunks will have games,” reported Kieley, who noted that there will be a coin toss game, a pie-eating contest, and some guessing games as well.

Friendly costumes are welcome, but attendees are asked not to wear scary masks to the event.

This year, organizers are changing things up with a small fundraiser. They will

accept donations for hot dogs, snacks, and other food items, and funds raised will be sent to two missions the church supports. One of the missions is the Breakout School of Ministry located in Uganda, and the other is Esther’s Heart, which is in El Salvador. “We have a pastor

we just ordained in El Salvador. We did a mission trip there last year, and we will do another one this year,” said Kieley.

According to Kieley and fellow organizer Stephanie Sanchez-Melton, kids of all ages are welcome to attend. Preregistration for the event

is not necessary. Last year, more than 200 attended, and Kieley and Sanchez-Melton hope to see that many again this year.

Readers who want to know more about the church may visit www.breakoutministries.org. Those who have specific questions may call 717-656-8366.

From

Stories of historical interest from Historical Society of Salisbury Township, submitted byLeonaBaker, president

For women, riding a horse with both legs on one side of the animal dates to antiquity, when Princess Anne of Bohemia rode sidesaddle across Europe on her way to marry King Richard II in 1382. Riding sidesaddle was seen as a way to protect her chastity. Eventually, it was considered vulgar for any woman to ride astride. Men rode horses; women were merely passengers sitting behind the men. Indeed, those long, heavy skirts made

Why Woman Riders Used

it impractical to ride astride.

Within decades, a specially designed saddle was developed to allow the woman to control the horse while keeping the required level of decency.

In the late 14th century, clever inventors had designed a functional sidesaddle with a chair-like construction, where the woman sat sideways on the horse, both feet propped on a footrest. Catherine de Medici, in the 16th century, is said to have developed a more practical design. Rather than keeping both feet placed side by side, she used a saddle that enabled the rider to place her right leg over the pommel of the saddle, allowing much more control of the horse and even allowing the rider to trot and canter safely and to show off her shapely ankle and calf to her best advantage.

Over time, further adjustments were made, but it was the introduction of a second pommel in the 1830s that gave women increased security and additional freedom of movement when riding sidesaddle. Now they could gallop and even jump fences with more safety,

but still conform to propriety and modesty.

By the mid-1800s, the rider sat astride, with her right hip back to allow the shoulders to fall into line. The right leg was placed on the front of the saddle, with the left leg bent and resting on the saddle and the foot in the stirrup.

As for dress, it wasn’t until the late 16th century that a “habit,” as it was, and still is, called, was designed specifically for riding sidesaddle. Before

this time, usual day wear was worn for riding. The first “safety skirt” was invented in 1875, buttoned along the seams, and later around the waist, just covering the legs, which were encased in breaches. This did much to prevent women from being caught by their skirts and dragged by their horses if they fell.

As the automobile gained popularity, riding itself went out of style. Indeed, horseback riding became more the leisure sport it is today. Few women use the sidesaddle except for show in the 21st century.

The Historical Society of Salisbury Township was given a circa 1840 saddle from what was once the brick Spring Garden Hotel, located west of Snake Lane on Route 340, now a private home. Though in poor shape today after years hanging in a barn, it remains today a great example of ingenuity, combining beauty and functionality.

Children are encouraged to dress in costume and to bring their own bags for collecting candy. Dogs on leashes will also be welcome, and some cars may even have treats for them. “We had 300 kids come through there last year,” said WordUP pastor Buck Mowday. “We probably will have about 25 cars (this year). If we run out of space, we will do tables.”

Food items will be provided by the D&Bz food truck, which will offer cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos and sodas. Only cash will be accepted for food purchases.

In addition to the outdoor Trunk or Treat, children will be able to gather more candy inside the fire company from representatives of local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Businesses and organizations are invited to set up tables and promote their

products and services.

Mowday noted that there is no fee for vehicle owners or those who set up tables, but they will be required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call 717-824-2627 or 717-3300561 to reserve a spot.

Three-Dimensional Theater

“This (play) is intended to be enjoyed by all ages,” said Dean Sauder, director of “The House at Pooh Corner,” the Lancaster Mennonite High School fall play.

Sauder mentioned that the show also celebrates the unification of Lancaster Mennonite School’s elementary, middle, and high schools all on one campus. “Since we have elementary kids on campus, we will do a children’s theater for our fall show,” said Sauder.

“The House at Pooh Corner,” based on the stories by A.A. Milne, will be staged in the High Fine Arts Center,

2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 28, and 29, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.

The story of “The House at Pooh Corner” is told through the eyes of 6-yearold Christopher Robin, played by Julia Fisher. On a beautiful morning in the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh, played by Tessa Kennedy; Piglet, played by Kay Beidler; Eeyore, played by Eli Heinsey; Rabbit, played by Jaz Shanahan; and their friends are called to a meeting by Christopher Robin, who tells them that he will be going away to

something called “education.” Grappling with the unknown, they all decide to run away to the South Pole; however, before they can leave, they encounter a bouncy creature, played by Sim Spurrier, who destroys the home of Owl, played by Noah Niehans.

As the 12 cast members rehearse the play, the students are working to create three-dimensional characters from the flat ones readers know from books and on the screen. “The one caution I gave them is to develop the character in their own way,” said Sauder.

Facing that challenge, the students are working to portray complexity in the charac-

ters while retaining the delight of their simplicity.

Laura Rosario, who plays Kanga, pointed out that the story sometimes presents complex topics through the eyes of a child. “(It’s a challenge) trying to add depth (while) remembering that it’s a kids’ show and Christopher Robin himself is a child,” she noted.

Beidler added that the characters are “very distinct.” “It’s like you’re playing a personality (trait) rather than a character,” said Spurrier, who pointed out that Eeyore represents sadness, Pooh is kindness, and Tigger is energy. “It’s (fun) finding where your character falls on that spectrum,” he said.

Braves Notch 3-1 Win Over Crusaders

Coming off a wild highscoring boys’ soccer game against Section Four rival Annville-Cleona - a Wednesday game in which the Braves lost 3-2 - the Pequea squad traveled to Lancaster Catholic on Thursday, October 6 for another section showdown.

The scoring in this match worked in cycles for the Braves. In the opening minutes, Jackson Neff put Pequea on the scoreboard, scoring off a Nick Ammon assist. Tony Martinez-Ortiz doubled the lead in the 26th minute as Neff assisted. Ammon then scored nine minutes into the second half, taking the assist from Peyton Leitch.

The Braves held on for a 3-1 victory with Bryce Goodroad making seven saves. Pequea improved to 5-9-0 (3-6-0 league). The Crusaders had beaten the Braves 3-0 earlier in the season.

“It was a good bit of redemption to be able to go over there and come away with a win,” said head coach Peter Bennett. “Also, we were frustrated with the Annville game.

“It was a good measuring stick,” Bennett added. “We’re a young group so we showed maturation by going in and winning like that.”

Asked about the significance of Neff scoring in the second minute of the match, Bennett said, “It raised the

level for the rest of the guys. We were able to go the other 78 minutes.

“Catholic is very quick and fast,” continued the coach. “They use their wingers. For us it was staying tight and not leaving too much space for the balls to be played into. We tried blocking their passing channels.”

The Braves did have a heartbreaking Section Four setback on Monday, October 10. Lancaster Country Day’s Kane Kirby scored with 13 minutes left in regulation. It spoiled a great effort by Goodroad, who made five saves in the match.

FOOTBALL

Coming into their Lancaster-Lebanon League game at Pequea Valley on Friday, October 7, the Hamburg Hawks had scored 35 or more points in each of their previous six games. In fact, three of their wins had the Hawks scoring over 40 points.

The Braves were coming off their first victory of the yeara 16-0 defeat of AnnvilleCleona to end the month of September.

Hamburg could not run away with Friday’s game, however, squeaking out a 2720 win at Kinzers and improving to 6-1 (3-1 league). They led by a 13-0 score at halftime as the Braves outscored the scoring juggernaut on the opposite side by a 20-14 score in the second half.

“We hung in there and

played against a very good team,” said head coach Mike Choi. “They came in as one of the top scoring offenses in the state and certainly in our league. They have a couple of linemen who are very big and very good - offensively and defensively. Their quarterback is tall and super athletic.”

Xander Menapace completed 14-of-24 passes for Hamburg, compiling 169 yards and going over 1,000 yards on the season.

Despite the 169 yards, the Braves’ pass defense did contain Menapace. However, he did pick up 172 rushing yards on 21 carries.

“We tried to take away his passing opportunities and make him run the ball,” Choi said. “We made them earn everything offensively.

“We didn’t know how well he could run,” Choi added. “We learned the hard way that he’s a great athlete. When things broke down and they needed crucial yards, he would run for the first down.”

Dontae Petersheim and Orlando Stoltzfus led the Braves’ offense, rushing for 79 and 75 yards, respectively. They each scored one rushing touchdown as did quarterback Peyton Temple, who also completed four passes for 37 yards.

“Petersheim and Stoltzfus had really great games,” Choi said. “They are powerful, fast backs. To be able to run one side or the other with either of these guys who are equally good, it really makes it difficult on defenses to key in on any one player. Those guys have really come around.” Stoltzfus scored on a 20-yard dash to put Pequea on the board in the third quarter. Cayden Carter lunged across the goal line for the two-point conversion, making it a five-point game at 13-8.

Menapace, who had run for TD and thrown an 18-yard scoring pass in the first half, made it a two-score game on his one-yard sneak later in the third,

making it 20-8. He added another rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 27-8.

Petersheim and Temple each scored on four-yard rushing TD’s in the fourth to cut the deficit to 27-20.

Offensive linemen Bryce Logan, Evan Stoltzfus, Logan McGraine, Zach Hollenbaugh, Luis Cooper, Alex Wilkinson and Jeremiah Garber led the way for the PV ball carriers.

“We’ve had a combination of these seven guys,” Choi explained. “Even when everyone is healthy, we rotate people in. They’ve worked really hard as a group since the beginning of the season.

“Our offense sustained some drives against them,” added the coach. “Even if we didn’t score, we took some minutes off the clock.”

The Braves fell to 1-6 on the year (1-3 league) and continue to improve as this year’s team sets the standard for a developing program.

GOLF

Matt Lapp had qualified for the PIAA District Three Class 2A Golf Championships thanks to his solid performance on September 26, at the L-L League Championships played at Fairview in Lebanon.

On October 7 and 8 at Honey Run Golf Course in York, the Pequea senior finished second to Lancaster Country Day’s Winston Thai in the Class 2A standings.

“His two-day efforts earned him a silver medal and a berth in the PIAA 2A state tournament,” Braves head coach Clair Beiler noted.

“Matt posted a stellar 76 for the first round on Friday to share the lead,” Beiler said. “The weather was less than ideal Saturday morning with morning temperatures in the 40’s and a brisk wind. Matt struggled early in the round and after eight holes was 10 over par.

“But he played the last 10 holes in a 1-over-par for a solid round of 83,” concluded the coach.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Pequea Valley lost two league matches over the past week, falling to 4-3-1 (8-6-1 overall).

Kaendyl Keen led a late Pequea comeback bid against Lancaster Catholic on Thursday, October 6. The Braves fell short in a 2-1 final. Keen scored with six minutes left in the match - part of a 17-shot attack.

Carissa Mulder made two saves for the Braves in goal.

Pequea also fell to Solanco on the road by a 6-1 score on Monday, October 10. Josie Jansen scored four times for Solanco.

Brooke Grham’s goal six minutes into the second half cut the lead to 4-1. Janssen then made it a hat trick one minute later before capping the scoring in the 68th minute.

Spurrier noted that the characters are iconic and familiar. Fisher agreed, pointing out that all the characters are manifestations of Christopher Robin’s imagination. “It’s difficult to find Christopher Robin’s personality because he doesn’t have a distinct emotion like other characters,” she

said. Beidler added that because Christopher Robin created the characters, they are magnified extensions of himself.

Sealed In Stone

On Sept. 11, members and friends of the Evangelical United Methodist Church (EUMC), 276 E. Main St., New Holland, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the church during the Sunday service. On the same day, the cornerstone of the church, which had been removed, was opened.

“The time capsule had been placed on June 26, 1922, at the original placement of the cornerstone,” explained Sarah Voran, a member of the EUM Futures team. “We were able to remove it and examine its contents.”

When the top of the cornerstone was removed, church members were able to retrieve a number of items, including a 1922 silver dollar, a copy of the church’s self-published newspaper, and a copy of the New Holland Clarion. “Some things fared better than other things,” said Voran of the items in the metal box sealed inside the stone. “There was a Bible from the 1850s used by one of the first pastors of the church … and that (was preserved) fairly well,” noted Voran, who added that the Bible is written in German because members of the Evangelical United Brethren, which

was the original denomination of the church, spoke mostly German in its early years.

Voran gave special credit for removing the cornerstone, which was located near the door of the church facing Main Street, to Jeff Shirk. “He was really instrumental in making that whole process happen,” said Voran, who noted that heavy machinery was involved in the removal.

“The cornerstone is solid granite, so it is extremely heavy. It was quite an undertaking,” she said.

“We had an incredible celebration service,” said Voran of the Sept. 11 worship gathering. “The Rev. Jennifer Freymoyer, UMC West District superintendent, spoke about blessings of God in the past and how we can trust Him in the future,” Voran reported. “It was a wonderful way to celebrate everything (EUMC) has done in the past for the community over the last 100 years and everything we’re going to do in the future.”

Voran recalled that the committee, which includes Jim and Donna Blanshine, Ron Hall, Mary Kilka, Nel Maldonado, Chad Martin, Sarah Shirk, Lori Zimmerman, pastor Richard Connor,

and church secretary Leigh Bellini, in addition to Voran, began meeting in 2020 shortly before COVID-19 restrictions were put into place.

“We were still able to celebrate as we originally intended, (but) we had to put a pause on the planning process until about six months ago,” said Voran. “We wanted to really celebrate the past of our church but also how that past will impact the future of our church and of the New Holland community.”

With that thought in mind, Voran explained that the work of the committee is far from finished. “The team will meet and decide what types of things (to put into the cornerstone) to help people 100 years from now get a glimpse of what

our church was like in 2022,” said Voran. “We would like potential thoughts on what we should include.”

More information about the church may be found by visiting https://newholland eumc.com or www.facebook .com/EUMCNH.

Memorial Closes For Renovations

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries.

It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.

The memorial is made of

concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.

Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.

Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.

One hundred percent of

donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.

For information about any of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ services or programs for veterans, visit www.veterans.pa.gov or follow us at www.facebook .com/padmva or www.twitter .com/padmva.

The winners of the team competition were (from left) Jason Birdwell, Gavin Sangrey, Ryan Eberly, and Phillip Gregg.

Three ABC Keystone apprentices received top scores at the Keystone Chapter’s individual local craft competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the chapter’s state-of-the-art training facility in Manheim. This year, the competition also featured the chapter’s first-ever team competition designed to demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions, where planning is critical to success; highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project was assembled and completed; and encourage apprentices to work through problems as a team.

The top scorers will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held from Wednesday, March 15, through Friday, March 17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Fla. At the NCC, they will compete against craftspeople from ABC’s 68 chapters nationwide. The local craft competition is made possible through the support of ABC Keystone Chapter members.

The competition was open to the public and was attended by family members and friends of the apprentices as well as the members of the Keystone Chapter, which provided the competitors the opportunity to compete in an environment replicating the experience of competing at ABC’s NCC. Competitors had to keep their focus on their craft and maintain strict attention to safety while working on projects that had been designed to test their practical and problem-solving skills.

The hands-on portion of the individual competition contributed to 75% of their total score and was judged by construction industry professionals. Individual competitors were not given details of their project build prior to the event. Ahead of the practical trade skills competition, the apprentices were required to take a written test contributing to the remaining 25% of their total score. During the written test, they proved their academic understanding and knowledge gained throughout their education program. To earn a spot at ABC Keystone’s individual local craft competition, apprentices had to rank within the top five of their trade class.

During the team competition, craft journey-level professionals worked in teams of four to complete a series of craft-specific tasks focused on electrical, plumbing, sheet metal/HVAC and carpentry in a six-hour period.

Team competitors were not required to take a written assessment. Teams were provided craft specifications and drawings no more than 24 hours before the event.
